Heidet, S.
Maubeuge (Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, 1900. Hardcover. Chammy spines. Marbled pastedown. . Very Good. Two fabulous albums of 81 original watercolors of French military caricature from the turn of the twentieth century. One of the illustrations is dated 1900, and so we assume the balance were done within a few years prior or post, as they are all of a single piece. Both 4o. One, 35.5 by 23 cm, the other, slightly smaller, 31 by 20.5 cm. 46 and 35 watercolors, respectively. The images are all on separate sheets which are mounted by inserting into diagonal corner slots cut out as in many a photo album. These separate sheets are not of a single size, but generally they measure around 25 by 16 cm, and this applies to both albums. The humorous portraits, sometimes accompanies by captions, depict the soldiers stationed at the garrison as well as the assortment of personages who gravitate to the garrison or are part of the fabric of the soldier's garrison life. Many of the portraits are done in full or partial profile, and this is an unifying element. The figures cast shadows, and there is an occasional dog, child, or non-living prop and furnishings to provide a setting; for the most part, though, the focus is entirely on the figure. The cumulative effect is to give a vivid sense of the soldier's life -- the mix of discipline, sport and hedonism -- during peacetime. The gentle rhythms of that life would a little over a decade later be torn apart with the outbreak of the First World War, of course. hese drawings, to our knowledge, were never printed, and we could fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

McKINLEY, William
New York: Doubleday & McClure Co., 1900. First Edition. Hardcover. Rubbing to the joints, particularly the front which is still tight. Old dampstain to the heel of the spine extending to the covers with no effect on the contents. Very Good and a superb association copy. Bound in 3/4 brown morocco and marbled boards with a gilt-decorated spine. Frontispiece engraved portrait of McKinley. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the first blank as President: "For Hon./Charles G. Dawes,/with sincere regards/William McKinley/Aug. 6, 1900." Books inscribed by McKinley are fairly scarce, in no small part because he was assassinated at the beginning of his second term in 1901, and those with any association value are extremely scarce. Highlights of his administration include the annexation of Hawaii and the Spanish-American War. Charles G. Dawes managed the Illinois portion of William McKinley's bid for the Presidency in 1896. Following McKinley's election, Dawes was rewarded for his efforts by being named Comptroller of the Currency, United States Department of the Treasury. Dawes left the Department of the Treasury in order to pursue a seat in the U.S. Senate, but McKinley's assassination disrupted his bid. He was appointed in 1921 by President Warren G. Harding as the first Director of the Bureau of the Budget. For his work on the Dawes Plan, a program to enable Germany to restore and stabilize its economy after the war, Dawes shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925. He was elected Vice President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge in 1924, with whom he had a tempestuous re … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shelley, Percy Bysshe
London & New York: Macmillan & Co., 1900. Bound in sumptuous midnight blue full levant by Bumpus Binders of Oxford, 8vo., 708 pages including index of first lines. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Shelley. The binding is, like the poet, deeply romantic. The six paneled spine is laden with gilt hearts and sinuous gilt borders punctuated by chaste pointielles. Both upper and lower covers have dual linear borders and gilt hearts, the design beautifully mirrored on the turn-ins. All edges gilt. Aside from some light minor wear, primarily confined to the lower cover, this is an exceptionally handsome binding from the Art Nouveau period of design. A perfect marriage of poetry and the bookbinder's art. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

TOLSTOI, Lev Nikolaievich.
The Brotherhood Publishing Co. 1900. In an unusual tall format, 8.5 x 21cm. Half title, vignette title, 4pp ads; occasional light foxing. Orig. pale green course-grained paper wrappers, lettered in gilt; sl. faded. v.g. Voskresenie, 1899. This is the first English book edition, translated by Louise Maude; a note on the verso of the half title indicates that it is ?made up of the original [13] penny parts?, and that the proceeds of this publication ?will be devoted to the assistance of the Doukhobors, who are now settling in Canada? The parts publications appeared between March 1899 and March 1900. The Doukhobors were a Christian sect who were persecuted in Russia for, among other things, their unwillingness to engage in conflict. With the assistance of the Canadian government, some 7500 members were transported from Russia to Canada at the beginning of the 20th century. Tolstoi, whose anti-institutional theories of religion made him a natural ally of the Doukhobors, wrote the work with the express purpose of assisting their plight. Line: Tolstoi 90.
