Nordau, Max.
13.5 cm x 22 cm. IX, 560 pages. Original Hardcover. Very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear, for example very slight rubbing at top of spine. "Degeneration is one of the most important documents of the fin de siècle, the years between the 1880s and 1900 when the robust views of the nineteenth century clashed with the heightened sensibilities of a searching and disillusioned generation. . . . [It] is a mirror of conflicting attitudes which are, in fact, contemporary with our present cultural dilemmas. But culture itself always reflects the state of society. Max Nordau presents us with a searchlight whose beams reflect the kind of world [we] have made for [ourselves.]"George L. Mosse in his introduction to the 1968 edition. (Amazon) Max Simon Nordau (born Simon Maximilian Südfeld July 29, 1849 January 23, 1923), was a Zionist leader, physician, author, and social critic. He was a co-founder of the World Zionist Organization together with Theodor Herzl, and president or vice president of several Zionist congresses. As a social critic, he wrote a number of controversial books, including The Conventional Lies of Our Civilisation (1883), Degeneration (1892), and Paradoxes (1896). Although not his most popular or successful work whilst alive, Degeneration is the book most often remembered and cited today. (Wikipedia)

Syracuse, N. Y: Fairbanks Gold Dust Washing Powder, 1900. Pine box. Measuring 12" wide x 27.75" long x 8.25" deep. Stamped with five illustrations of the comic black African "Gold Dust Twins" ("Goldie" and Dustie") doing household labor, and with a color lithographic label illustrating the twins on one end. "Syracuse, N.Y." stamp on bottom of the box. Label is partially perished, a few modest cracks in the wood, and lacks the presumed wooden lid. The company's packaging featured the Twins beginning in 1890, and their image was used in the brand for approximately 60 years. Relatively early on the company switched to cardboard shipping boxes and thus the date attribution. The individual wooden panels of the boxes, decorative in themselves, have often been detached and framed, thus finding an intact box of this size and vintage is an uncommon occurrence. Very Good.

Gilbert Adams FRPS (1906-1996)
Modern (1900-1979). Gilbert Adams FRPS (1906-1996) - Original Early 20th Century Oil. An excellent oil painting on board in gilt frame. This work is not signed but was purchased in a collection of works by the artist and has been attributed accordingly. Picture in window measures (40 x 60 cm). Unsigned. Stain in middle ground, but otherwise in fine condition.Gilbert Adams (1906-1996) studied at Reading University and like his father and brother, Gilbert earned his reputation as a photographer. Most notably, he obtained a commission by the British Council to make a series promoting Britain to tourists and also directed the lighting for the Coronation of Elizabeth II. A number of Gilbert’s photographic portraits are held by the National Portrait Gallery including ones of the popular British artists Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost and Graham Sutherland. Other famous faces to appear amongst his post-war work include the sculptor Henry Moore and a young Marianne Faithfull. Gilbert was also an incredibly talented painter and relayed his skills as a portrait photographer to his portrait painting - "Art and picture making with a camera are fundamentally the same, requiring such essential qualities as good taste, beauty of line, and perfect juxtaposition of tone, together with atmosphere that stirs the emotion" Gilbert Adams, 'Photograms of the Year’ (1948) p.11. His portraits are executed in an impressionistic and occasionally expressionistic manner. Through the medium of oil and coloured pastel, the portraits in this collection convey a vibrancy and beauty of line reminiscent of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

A modern tour of the holy land, written by an Episcopal priest with more than a nod to the history of the city. Tight, perfectly square binding, intricate gilt lettering and decoration to cardinal red spine and board, tasseled place holder, spotless, bright white page stock, flawless hinges, absolutely beautiful example, check the photos [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
