Jahrhundert in England sehr in Mode. Begeisterte Anhänger, Frösche so zu präparieren, daß sie absurd anmutende menschliche Situationen darstellen, waren u.a. Charles Darwin und Queen Victoria. Bizarre frog taxidermy. 4 stuffed dancing frogs, two with a hockey stick mounted on a woodblock. The amphibians have been preserved through taxidermy and then posed in the human scenario of a hockeygame. Taxidermy became a big trend in the late 19th century and was particularly popular in Britain. Charles Darwin and Queen Victoria were known to be fans. Amphibian taxidermy is considered to be extremely difficult and even today's practitioners tend not to attempt work on the slimy creatures.

Original ink drawing and pencil sketch overleaf. Signature stamp of the artist's signature in the lower right corner of the work, and signature stamp of the workshop at the back. This drawing is part of a series of ten studies for Bertin to 1920-1925. A small asymmetric lack of origin, otherwise very good condition. Provenance: the artist's studio, referenced to catalog Atelier Louis Anquetin (Thierry de Maigret, 28/11/08). Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant-garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. With Émile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893, Louis Anquetin continues to explore new opportunities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, after a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias pictorial that will line the general art movement, and take away from his friends. Dazzled by the baroque art and its creative force, so he thinks his childhood friends were involved in a pathway leading to the death of painting. He believes in a "perfect painting" which is embodied in the re-remember the lessons of Michelangelo and Rubens among others. His work becomes more conventional, he advocated a return to business by offering to reflect on the a priori conditions of any possible form of art in accordance with the rules of perspective and anatomy, as practiced by the masters the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Leaving only a few works that can be described as monumental, Anquetin turns prolific with its many studies and sketches, who considered that the design was "a very powerful means of expression" compulsory foundation of all arts plastics. Working voluntarily countdown of his time, Louis Anquetin made possible the existence of an original modern figuration. By his obstinacy and his passion for painting, he has indeed prevented is completely closed the way to the great Western tradition. You can admire his works in many prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay or the Louvre in Paris, San Francisco and Detroit, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery and the Tate London, etc.. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         The Winning of the West. Daniel Boone Edition with Roosevelt manuscript. Four volume set.

Four volume set; 5 folding maps, 102 plates. Here, #2 of only 200 sets in the original grained green morocco which has reverted to brown at the spines; floral gilt corner devices, raised bands, gilt titled spine. Top edge gilt; others deckled. Ruled & floriated dentelles; remarkably preserved red suede end & fly sheets. One page folded legal leaf in Roosevelt's hand mounted following colophon reveals his editing wasn't reflective but done as he wrote (lined through words here bracketed): "The attitude of the British gradually changed from one of passive to active hostility. In 1792 and '93 they still (united) [to keep] the Indians to make [at] peace with the Americans, provided always there were no such concessions made to the latter as would endanger the British control of the fur trade. But by the beginning of 1794 the relations between the Great Britain and the United States had become so strained that open war was threatened; for the advisors of the king, relying on the weakness of the young Federal Republic had begun to adopt towards it that tone of brutal insolence, which [backed by] reflected well the general attitude of the British people toward all Americans, and which finally brought on the second war between the two nations. The British officials in Canada were quick to reflect the tone of the home government, and, as always in such cases, [some of them] the more zealous and belligerent went a little farther than they were authorized. On February 10th Lord Dorchester, Governor of Canada, in an address of welcome to some of the chiefs from the tribes of the north and west, said speaking of the boundary, [speaking of children, since my return, I find no appearance of a line] "Children since my return I find no appearance of a line remains; and the manner in which the people of the United States push on and act and talk [on this]....I shall not be xxx surprised if we are at war with them in the course of the present year; and if so a line must then be drawn by the warriors....we have acted in the most peaceable manner and borne the language and conduct of the people if the United States with patience; but I believe our patience is almost exhausted." (1) [At the Nor that] Of course such a speech, delivered to such an audience, was [merely incitement to war a direct] more than a mere incitement to war; it was a direct appeal to arms. [P] Nor did the [incitement] encouragement given the Indians end with words; for [Simcoe] in April, Simcoe, [who was in command in upper Canada, went to] the lieutenant-governor, himself built a fort at the Miami rapids, in the very heart of the hostile.... (1). Rives' Life and Times of James Madison, III, 418. A verified copy of the speech, from the archives of the London Foreign Office. The authenticity of the speech was admitted at the time by the British minister; yet, extraordinary to say, not only British, but American historians, had spoken of it as spurious." An exceptional set in publisher's original bindings; free of previous owner's name or other markings. Large, stout octavo

Pair of Chinese Door God Paintings.

No date. Ca. early 1900s? PAIR OF PAINTINGS, each on a sheet of board 24 x 15 inches. Some light abrasions, overall light soiling, overall good to very good displayable condition. Verso of the board shows signs of their having been previously framed. These are beautiful examples of vintage Chinese folk art painting, well executed with a great sense of movement and attention to detail in such touches as the silvered highlights. The custom of placing these images to ward off bad spirits from a dwelling or business dates back to the effectiveness of two T'ang era generals in ridding their Emperor of a troublesome ghost. An estimation of date might be the early 1900s. A bold, colorful pair.
