        A Family of Polar Bears

Sussex, England: circa late 1940s-early1950s. Oil on Winsor and Newton's "Rathbone" Canvas board. 16 x 12 inches. Signed lower right. Osmond was born on 6 May 1900 in Orford, Suffolk, the son of the Rev. Percy Herbert Osmond (a clergyman with the Church of England) and his wife, Agnes Paulina (née Sadler), and grew up in Surrey where his father was appointed to the vicarage of Ewshot, near Farnham, in 1906. Osmond was educated privately and, from 1917, studied at Regent Street Polytechnic, earning his Art Teacher's Diploma and a Diploma in Art History in 1924. He taught part-time at Hastings College of Technology, Sussex, and at Hornsey College of Art whilst exhibiting his work, primarily painting in oils and illustrations in wash and line. Osmond was married to Constance M. Biggs, a sculpter who also exhibited at the Royal Academy, in 1927 and turned freelance in 1928, contributing illustrations to Hutchinson' Pie and to books, including a Reader's Library edition of Black Beauty (1932). He began writing and illustrating his own books in the early 1950s, the first of which, A Valley Grows Up, was published by the Oxford University Press in 1953. It went on to win the Carnegie Medal for the year's most outstanding children's book in 1954. That same year, Osmond began writing and illustrating the Animals of the World series for Oxford University Press (1954-57) which were widely praised for their depth and detail. Osmond subsequently wrote and illustrated a wide variety of books, including From Drumbeat to Tickertape (1960), a study of communication, The Artist in Britain, from the eighth to the twentieth century (1961), and Exploring Fashions and Fabrics (1967). He continued to produce popular books on animals and the peoples of other lands as well as illustrating The Thames Flows Down (1957), written by his wife under the pen-name Laurie Osmond. Osmond was a member of the Society of Industrial Artists and the Society of Authors. His death was registered in Lewes, E. Sussex, in 1981. (

Illustrations of the botany of Captain Cook's voyage round the world in H.M.S. Endeavour in 1768-71. Australian plants.

      - London, printed by order of the Trustees of the British Museum, 1900-1905. Three parts in three. Folio (47.5 x 31.5 cm). Title and 102 pp., followed by 320 lithographed plates (numbered 1-318, 41A, and 45A) and three folding maps. The plates are photolithographic reproductions of original engraved proof plates by F. P. Nodder, James Miller, J. F. Miller, and John Cleveley that were never published. The set is bound in uniform black buckram with gilt lettering on spine, reading: "Cook's First voyage. Australian plants", and the plate numbers contained in each volume.l One of only 300 sets produced, being the first published edition of nearly all the botanical illustrations by Banks and Solander on Australian plants. This set is the first substantial selection made from copper plates engraved under Joseph Banks' direction between 1772 and 1784. The botanical specimens collected during Cook's voyage were carefully depicted in watercolour by several artists, both during and after return of the expedition, under supervision of Banks and Solander. Between 1771-1784 18 selected engravers made at least 743 engraved copperplates of superb quality from the completed watercolour drawings. However, for various reasons Banks never got to publishing these plates and after his death they were bequeathed to the British Museum. It took until 1901 before the museum published a first selection of these plates, though a few of them had been used to illustrate other books. The present publication, with identifications by J. Britten, represents the first appearance of most of the images and is a magnificent overview of the first botanical study of Australian plants. Published in three parts (in 1900, 1901, and 1905), each part consisted of text and plates, though the page numbers of the text followed up on each other. In this copy, all text has been bound together at the start of the first volume, preceded by one general title page dated 1905 (this is the title page of part III). The title pages for parts I and II were left out, as per the instructions of the binder: after completion of the publication, the set was meant to be bound like this and the titles of parts I and II were only meant for temporary use. Bindings with only some light shelf wear, contents mostly very clean. Nearly all plates without foxing or spotting, only a few plates (mainly towards end of part III) with some scattered spotting. A very good set. Nissen BBI, 74; Mitchell Library, 934; Stafleu & Cowan, 295. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Two Letters from Hong Kong, 1900.

Ink manuscript fill fourteen sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 paper. About 4000 words. Kathryn writes to her friend Jessie in Oregon, describing her daily routine and life in Hong Kong with her husband Tom, who works there. "Hong Kong is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I cannot describe it to you but will send you some Kodak pictures (Wish we had those!)" Her writing is rather slangy and telegraphic, but she manages to convey a sense of her life and times. "We have a rickshaw of our own now, Tom bought it last week. It is a nice one, made in Japan, and better than the ones they make here. Have two coolies so they can drag Tom up the hill. One runs behind and pushes. A tailor is making their uniforms. I chose kahki (sic) trimmed with red for them. Will also have the monogram TWH in red letters on them. People here think you are somebody if your coolies are in uniform." She goes on at length in this manner, explaining that the chair coolies (necessary to negotiate the many steps in Hong Kong) do not like Tom because he weighs 200 pounds. She, on the other hand, goes where she pleases. She discusses her wardrobe (all white clothing) and talks about clothing and Chinese tailors, and about friends of her husband's - other expats. She describes their rooms, a bargain at $160 per month. Then, "Although the Plague is usually worse here in summer it seems now that there are fewer cases than there were a few weeks ago... I go through the Plague district (that is, where it is the worst) Wauchai, a suburb, nearly every day." She also talks about ships currently in the harbor, "trouble in the north" and the Hong Kong regiment. We gather that she's been married just a year, and that her husband pampers her, but that she misses her friend Jessie and is a little homesick. The first twelve-page letter was written between June 19 and 25. The second, a two pager sending condolences for a death in Jessie's family, was written August 27, 1900. Clean and legible

The Century Co. (1900) [ca. 1927], New York - Near fine in a very good-plus jacket. 8vo. Blue cloth boards with green and navy blue ink illustrations and lettering to front, spine. In original illustrated dust jacket. Unclipped. Jacket lightly toned at spine and corners of interior flaps, small chips from spine ends. Interior endpapers with toning at corners corresponding with jacket flaps. Overall a sound, clean, and bright copy, unmarked, in an attractive, well preserved dust jacket. A lovely copy of this high point in nautical literature. Slocum's first-person account of the first solo circumnavigation of the globe. Though the copyright page provides dates of 1899 and 1900, the publisher's list to the rear jacket panel lists ten titles, each printed in 1927, and the volume's size is slightly smaller than the first Century printing (7.5" x 4.75" approximately). Likely a ca.1927 printing, thus. Given the copyright date of 1900, later printings are often erroneously described and offered as the first edition. Still, an early and handsome copy of this classic narrative. Scarce in jacket. 294pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
