        The Winning of the West

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons at The Knickerbocker Press,, 1900. 4 volumes, large octavo (250 × 163 mm). Original dark green crushed half morocco, spine with three raised bands, gilt-lettered direct, marbled sides and endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut, cream silk page-markers. Frontispiece to each volume, 98 plates, portraits, etc., with captioned tissue guards, 5 folding maps extending from full-page stubs on light wove paper, routes and boundaries marked in colour as issued. Spines evenly sunned, rear joint of vol. III almost imperceptibly restored towards the head, light damp-staining at end of vol. II, a few minor areas of rubbing, an excellent set overall. Originally published between 1889 and 1896 in four volumes, this, the "Daniel Boone Edition", was limited to just 200 numbered copies - this set numbered 197 - each with an original page of manuscript tipped-in to volume I. In this case the leaf (172 × 212 mm) has 16 lines, containing text printed in vol. IV, and relating to British negotiations with the Seven Nations in 1794. The deluxe issue of Roosevelt's most ambitious published work, a sprawling narrative of the opening of America's western frontier which was widely, and appreciatively, reviewed. Frederick Jackson Turner in the Dial considered that Roosevelt had "rescued a whole movement in American development from the hands of unskilled annalists"; while William Frederick Poole, the Newberry Librarian, contributed a not entirely uncritical 5,000 word review to The Atlantic Monthly in which he commended Roosevelt for applying the "best modern method" of studying history in his return to primary sources, and admired the vigour and appropriateness of his writing; "His style is natural, simple and picturesque, without any attempt at fine writing, and he does not hesitate to use Western words which have not yet found a place in the dictionary."

Illuminierte Initiale "N".

Beautiful condition. Solid binding, clean text, solid text block.NO shelfwear, NO wear on corners. Dmitry Nekhlyudov, a nobleman, is summoned to serve on the jury in criminal court. As the prisoners brought in, he is shocked to recognize one of them: a woman he once loved. Katusha was a common girl raised by Nekhlyudov's rich aunts; she was only sixteen when Nekhlyudov had seduced her during one of his visits. She had gotten pregnant and gave birth to a child who later died in a hospital for foundlings. Nekhlyudov had no intention to marry Katusha. He had quickly forgotten about the affair and went on with his life. Now he learns that what was only a brief adventure to him had ruined Katusha's whole life. She is now a prostitute, charged with theft and poisoning. The jury finds her not guilty of theft and believes that while she may have administered the poison she did so unknowingly. However, the jury inadvertently fails to put the words "no intent to take life" in the verdict, and Katusha is sentenced to hard labor in Siberia. Realizing that he was the one who pushed Katusha onto the wrong path and feeling guilty, Nekhlyudov attempts to correct the mistake, but there is not much he can do. His conscience awakes, he goes through a deep transformation. He decides to follow Katusha to Siberia and to marry her. When he meets with her and tells her that, she, of course, does not believe him. However, her defenses slowly go down as she sees that Nekhlyudov's change of heart is full and sincere.. 1st Edition.         MIYAKO SOMENISHIKI Tsurukame

1900. [DESIGN]. MIYAKO SOMENISHIKI Tsurukame. N.P., N.D. [Kyoto?, c. 1900] 23.5 x 16 cm. Printed title on the cover. String-bound, Japanese-style, fukuro-toji. One of several different works with the same title from the turn of the century, this collection of 60 kimono designs is extremely well-printed. The "Tsurukame" volume here presented does not have a colophon but appears to be complete. Other designers from the series include Furuya Ko^rin, but these designs may not be his as they appear more delicate than his usual bold designs in vivid colors. The covers are a bit worn, but the impressions and colors are excellent. A lovely, if a bit mysterious, example of the genre.

Ueber die Grundlagen der Geometrie.Göttingen: K. Geselchaft der Wissenschaften, 1902.

First edition, the rare offprint issue, of Hilbert's partial solution to the fifth of his famous list of 23 problems, proposed in 1900, that he viewed as important in guiding the development of mathematics in the next century. Hilbert also gives in this work the first rigorous definition of a 'manifold,' a notion that would play a central role in twentieth century mathematics and physics. This paper is a further development of the ideas in his great book <i>Grundlagen der Geometrie</i> (1899), an "influential work that led by its axiomatic method to a new thinking in all mathematical fields in the 20th century" (Michael Toepell in <i>Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics</i>, p. 710). The present paper was appended to the second edition of <i>Grundlagen der Geometrie</i>, published in 1903. <br/><br/> "Hilbert's interest in the foundations of geometry turned his attention to what became known as the "space problem" of Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894), a distinguished physiologist and physicist who in 1868 proposed to deduce the geometrical nature of space from observed facts of experience having to do with the properties of mobile rigid bodies. Using calculus, he argued that his facts lead to the conclusion that metric relations in space correspond either to Euclidean geometry or to the geometry of Lobachevsky. In 1887 Poincaré used Lie algebra techniques to solve the analog of Helmholtz's problem in two dimensions, and Lie (1890) did the same in <i>n</i> dimensions. Hilbert questioned the necessity of assuming, as was done by Helmholtz and his successors, the differentiability of the transformations they considered, a <i>sine qua non</i> if one were to solve the problem using Lie's theory. In particular, the assumption that the group is generated by infinitesimal transformations did not fit in easily or naturally with the other geometrical axioms. Hilbert wondered whether this assumption might actually follow as a consequence of the continuity of the transformations defining the rigid motions, together with the group property and the other axioms of geometry. Thus in his famous lecture on mathematical problems Hilbert posed as his fifth problem the more general question as to what extent Lie's theory, with its differentiability assumptions, could be recovered from seemingly weaker continuity assumptions about the transformations of the group and their multiplication. "Hence there arises the question whether, through the introductions of suitable new variables and parameters, the group can always be transformed into one with differentiable defining functions; or whether at least with the help of certain simple assumptions a transformation is possible into groups admitting Lie's methods." <br/><br/> "Shortly thereafter, Hilbert himself dealt with this problem within the limited context of the analogue of Helmholtz's problem for the plane. Here we find the first attempt to deal with continuous groups by topological means. Hilbert stressed the fact that his methods of proof were completely different from Lie's, that he would mainly use the concepts of Cantor's theory of point sets and the Jordan curve theorem for the plane. Of course, the context of Hilbert's topological approach to groups was a special and limited one, but it showed that results could be achieved and suggested the possibility of doing something similar with respect to the formidable fifth problem... it should be noted that in seeking to characterize the plane as a two-dimensional manifold, Hilbert introduced the approach that eventually led (through Weyl) to the modern concept of a manifold. "These stipulations," Hilbert wrote, "contain for the case of two dimensions, it seems to me, the rigorous definition of what Riemann and Helmholtz designated by 'multiply extended manifold' and by Lie 'number manifold' and which is at the basis of their entire investigation" (T. Hawkins, in <i>History of Topology</i>, I. M. James (ed.), pp. 175-6). <br/><br/> Hilbert's fifth problem was finally solved in full generality by Andrew Gleason, Deane Montgomery and Leo Zippin in 1952.. Seperately paginated offprint from: Nachrichten der Königlichen Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen, 1902, pp. 233-241. Original printed self-wrappers, pp. [1] 2-9 [10:blank]. It depicts a little girl standing on a sandy shore in a long checked dress with a frill at the hem, wearing a straw hat, looking down at a beautiful dressed doll obviously left behind by some little rich girl. The caption, not visible on the image, is "One day she found a great treasure". Farmiloe has signed the bottom right corner "Edith Farmiloe". A charming image but we have failed to discover whether or not it was done for a children&#39;s book. Fine condition, in a cream mount, ready for framing. "A variety of scenes, however, can be formed, and unending pleasure provided, by placing the figures in innumerable positions". The text of the stories is printed on the verso of the panoramas. Two of the pieces have been mended -- the rabbit (#4) and the woman with spoon (#6a). Two have been mended with parts replaced in facsimile -- the man with ax (#18) and the duck (#19). The flap to the rear pocket has been mended as well. With 36 cut-out figure, instead of the more usual 16, this is one of the more elaborate of the Father Tuck&#39;;s Panorama series. Very Good binding.

[Vladivostok. 1900].. Twenty-four photographs (3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches each), each print matted on heavy paper of commercial photograph album. Early 20th-century German photograph album with textured paper boards and spine. Front board decoratively embossed with image of a flower and the words, "Moderne Lichtbildere." Top and bottom of spine, edges of boards, and outer joints moderately worn. Mounts separating, but very good. Images very clean overall and in very good condition. An album of twenty-four original photographs taken in Vladivostok in June 1900. The snapshot- size images are each matted one per page in a German-made photograph album, and each image is inscribed in a contemporary hand in German. The photographs include views of the port, Russian naval ships and numerous other vessels, the city center, the post office, street scenes, buildings and houses (including a German brewery), and pictures of everyday life. Due to its location in the Russian Far East on the coast of the Sea of Japan and near both the Chinese and Korean borders, Vladivostok was a settlement with numerous international residents and visitors, and this heterogeneity is recorded in this album. Half of the photographs are of people, including images of Russians, Chinese, and Koreans. Photographs of local Chinese residents predominate, with images of a waterman filling his wagon, a fruit seller in the market, another seller in the market with his measuring scale, and other laborers. Other images in the album include Korean children playing, various neighborhoods and locales, and a family portrait (complete with cow) in front of a house. A fine turn-of-the- century album consisting of original contemporary photographs of Vladivostok, with numerous images of the local population. Due to its strategic location, Soviet Russia later kept the port under the highest security, and any photographs of it are uncommon.

The information included is expansive; it encompasses classical, popular, and vernacular names of the specimens, references to works on zoology and the mammals, and a general description of the animals, including notes on their size, distribution, history, and habits.         Concerning Children

Boston: Small, Maynard & Company. VG+/NONE. 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 1st edition/1st printing. 1 of only 2000 copies printed. This author was quite well-known in her day as a feminist and an activist for women&#39;s rights, and as an author writing about women&#39;s issues. She was the grandniece of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her best known story, "The Yellow Wallpaper," is about a woman who suffers from a mental breakdown due to the birth of her child and the prescription of isolated bed rest from her physician husband, which paralleled some of the events of her own life. She co-edited the Pacific Coast Women&#39;s Press with socialist Helen Campell. When she turned to lecturing, she became well known for her discussion on women&#39;s topics. With the book "Woman and Economics" in 1898, she emerged as a spokesperson on such topics as women&#39;s perspectives on work and family. She co-founded the Women&#39;s Peace Party in 1915 with activist Jane Addams. Bound in dark blue cloth with gilt printing and gilt & green decorations. The half-title page is the first page and there is a very narrow paper-only slit at the gutter; however, the book is very firmly bound and very tight. It is straight, clean, and has no handwriting or damage to the text paper. There are small areas of wear to the binding cloth at the tips of the corners and spine ends, a trace of rubbing to the "N" and "C" in &#39;Concerning" on the front panel, and the cloth and printing of the spine is a bit dulled. A very scarce book, and really in quite excellent condition. ; 7-1/2" x 4-7/8"; 298 pages .

1900. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1900. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt, beveled. First Edition. This drama in verse form includes a few prose passages that are believed to be the work of Lady Gregory -- to whom Yeats dedicated the book. Although the number of copies printed is unrecorded, this is in our experience a rather scarce book. This is an unusually bright copy, fine except for a few faint scratches on the (blank) rear cover.
