        LORD JIM

1900. A Romance. New York: Doubleday & McClure Co., 1900. Original light green cloth decorated in dark green. First American Edition of what is arguably Conrad's greatest work. This copy has the title page in the second and usual (cancelled) state: at the time this was being published, Doubleday & McClure was dividing into two entities (Doubleday Page and McClure Phillips), with uncertainty as to which firm would retain the rights to LORD JIM. Thus, in the first (integral) state the copyright is "1900 by Doubleday, Page & Co.", while in the cancelled state the copyright is "1899 and 1900 by Joseph Conrad." ~This is a near-fine copy (spine very slightly sunned, light wear at the extremities). With the penciled signature of Conrad bibliographer Walter E. Smith. Cagle A5b(2).

New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1900. First Edition. Typical darkening of the spine but the lettering is still readable. The spine tips, usually found frayed, are rubbed and soft but intact. The text is fresh and bright. Most importantly, both hinges--nearly always found split, cracked, or repaired--are here completely intact and original. A Near Fine copy and quite scarce in this condition. Publisher's wine-red cloth stamped in black. Dreiser's first and most important book, both a modern classic and a genuine rarity with only 1000 copies printed and those copies suppressed by the publisher due to the book's unflinching depiction of an innocent girl's spiral downward. Many believe that as few as 100 copies now exist. An uncommon opportunity to obtain a landmark book, one of the scarcest of the twentieth century, a book that paved the way for a host of writers to come in dealing frankly with sexual situations that previously were either hushed or sensationalized. After Harper and Brothers declined to print the novel, Dreiser approached Doubleday, Page, and Co., because it had published the writings of Frank Norris, a promising naturalistic writer whose novel McTEAGUE had recently caused a stir. Norris was an advisor for Doubleday and enthusiastically supported the publication of SISTER CARRIE, later calling it "the best novel I had read in M.S. since I had been reading for the firm." Based on Norris's favorable praise, junior partner, Walter Hines Page, promised Dreiser that Doubleday would publish the book. However, after reading Dreiser's manuscript, Frank Doubleday objected to the immoral behavior of the novel's characters and urged his firm to reconsider its publication. After finding that Doubleday and Page was legally obligated to print the novel, he allowed its publication but refused to promote it. As a result, the novel sold only 456 copies, and Dreiser received a mere $68.40 in royalties. It was only after Dreiser had established his literary reputation with later novels and after a 1912 reprint by Harper and Brothers had been published that the story of SISTER CARRIE was acknowledged for its stark and realistic depiction of a young woman's struggles. Though many would not think of Theodore Dreiser as an advocate for women's rights, this novel was enlightening in its portrayal of a young single woman's struggle to survive in a post-Victorian urban environment. His work shortly after as editor-in-chief of the magazine THE DELINEATOR provided further evidence for Dreiser's concern for women's struggle to survive in early 20th century American society. And of George Hurstwood, the well-to-do married man who has an affair with Carrie, Joseph Epstein has said, "Dreiser has created the most persuasive portrait in literature of a man in social, psychological, physical, and moral decline.

An album of original watercolours of birds, with title 'Gefiedertes Volk' [Feathered Folk]

[Germany: circa 1900]. Oblong folio. (9 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches). 1p. original calligraphic title in blue red and gold inks and wash within original watercolour decorative surround of a wood and twined-ivy frame with three birds and a background of the jungle at dawn, 1p. original calligraphic index in German in blue, green and gold inks and wash, 85pp. of thin blue card, mounted recto and verso with 178 original ornithological watercolours on watercolour paper (7 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches and smaller) by a single hand (two signed 'G.Rauber'), most with integral title in German in black ink identifying the subject of the watercolour. Original dark blue half cloth, shaped paper label mounted on upper cover with calligraphic title in blue and red 'Aquarelle'. A charming and wide- ranging collection of original ornithological watercolours. All the birds are shown against a carefully painted background, most images are of single birds, but a significant number of drawings include two or more species or varieties. As the index makes clear the birds are carefully collected together under eight different headings: the 'Sänger' or songbirds section includes the Baltimore oriole, golden oriole, song- thrush, nightingale, black cap, the hill mynah and about 12 other species; the 'Finkenvögel' or finches includes the cardinal, bullfinch, chaffinch and about 25 other species, 'Prachtfinken' or showy finches is slightly misleading as a title as this section includes a variety of brightly- plummaged birds that are often found in captivity, but are not finches: canaries for example, and the birds in this section are intermingled with the 'Webervögel' or weaverbirds, with a total of about 59 watercolours of about 94 individual birds. The section on 'Papageren und Sittiche' or parrots and parrakeets includes 25 drawings of cockatoos, the African gray, macaws, budgerigars, parrakeets and love-birds. The remaining three sections: 'Hühnervögel' or chickens, 'Schwimmervögel' or waterbirds and a final category for various other sorts of birds: 'Diverses gef Volk' are all intermingled, but include a total of 55 drawings of both exotics and better known species like the blue-jay, swan or jackdaw.

        Flying A Kite

: , ca 1900. - Wain Cats Fly KiteWAIN, Louis. "Flying A Kite." An original watercolor and gouache drawing, c. 1900-1905.Signed at lower right. Matted, glazed and framed. Approximate image measurement: 14 1/2 x 19 1/2 in; 370 x 505 mm. Framed: 25 1/2 x 29 3/4 in; 660 x 755 mm. A colorful, charming and amusing depiction of a "father" cat flying a kite with the help of his three kittens. At the end of the nineteenth century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist who went mad, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. "He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (H.G. Wells)."From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled [a]lthough he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well-known!" (Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914).A wonderful early example of a Louis Wain original watercolor drawing.

Deutschlands Heer und Flotte in Wort und Bild. Germany's Army and Navy by Pen and Picture. 1899

Akron, OH: The Werner Company, 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/No Jacket. Book. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. Text in German and English, with one column on each page devoted to each. Original pictorial cloth. 17.5 by 13.5 inches (44 by 35 cm); [8], 181 pp., with 42 fine, bright chromolithographic plates of military costume, ships, and troops on parade, drilling, on horseback, reconnoitering and scouting, bivouacking, in the field and barracks, engineering -- in short, these are far more than static costume illustrations but rather ones that depict action scenes. Published by Werner, which was a leading German American publisher in the late nineteenth century that began by publishing a German newspaper in the U.S. This, being a bilngual publication, was perhaps the company's most opulent book that clearly was aimed at appealing to Teutonic patriotism of the immigrant community well before the First World War squelched this type of fervor. Similar chromolithography "Wort und Bild" books were also being published in Germany itself, such as ones celebrating the Franco-Prussian War,yet this particular title is artistically superior to much of the genre. It might also be observed that the genre was not unique to German culture. (I.e. Ogden's Uniforms of the Army, depicting American army costume throughout the nineteenth century, published just a few years earlier.) Again, for dynamism and beauty of the image, this title is hard to beat. Some binding wear, and joints repaired at extremities. Interior is tight and extraordinarily clean. Plates are pristine, and even the tissue guards may be described so.

        The Works of Charles Reade

Boston and New York - Colonial Press Company 1900 - A very handsome set of the Works of the English novelist and playwright, Charles Reade. Reade (8 June 1814 11 April 1884) fell out of fashion by the turn of the centuryit is unusual to meet anyone who has voluntarily read him, wrote George Orwell in an essay on Reade - but during the 19th century he was one of England's most popular novelists and his most famous novel, The Cloister and the Hearth, with its endless succession of boisterous adventures in a sketchily picturesque medieval setting, and its topical theme of the evils of clerical celibacy, has been regarded by some leading critics as perhaps the greatest historical novel in English. Indeed, although Reade may lack the refinement and skill that ensured the endurance of contemporaries such as Dickens and Eliot, his gift for rapid, exciting narrative, lively dialogue, and vivid, often horrific description ensured his popularity in his time and makes many of his novels enjoyable reads to this day. The set consists of:Foul PlayNever Too Late To Mend (in two volumes)A Woman HaterPeg Woffington and Christie JohnstoneLove Me Little Love Me LongGriffith Gaunt or, JealousyA Terrible TemptationThe Cloister and the Hearth (in two volumes)The Jilt and Good StoriesPut Yourself in his Place (in two volumes)The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth, The Autobiography of a Thief and Singleheart and DoublefaceWhite LiesHard Cash (in two volumes)Each volume features three photogravure illustrations from drawings by Frank T. Merrill, including a frontispiece with tissueguard, opposite attractive two colour title pages. Beacon edition. All volumes lack any indication ofdate, although the gilt exterior decoration would suggest a date around the turn of the century. It is difficult to ascertain whether this set is complete as there is no record of its existence on any literary database, but certainly every one of Reade's major works may be found in this handsome collection of eighteen volumes. Condition: Uniformly bound in half morocco with marbled boards. Externally, smart with generally very little shelfwear - save for some lifting of thespine to the head of three volumes -but with sunning to all spines. Of 32 hinges, six are strained and three tender. Internally, firmly bound. Front free endpaper of Love Me. . . is loose but present. Pages are very bright and clean throughout, indeed this set appears to be unread. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Two Original Photographs of Violet Oakley's Studio With Autograph Inscriptions on Back by Violet Oakley

Philadelphia: not published, ca. 1900. Offered here are two original photographs, most likely taken by either herself, Jessie Willcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green or Edith Emerson. One, of her close friend and fellow painter Ellen Wetherald Ahrens, and the other of both Violet Oakley and the other of both Violet Oakley and her sister, Hester Oakley. Both have original explanations of the photos written by Violet Oakley on the back in pencil: On verso of Ahrens, "This is Ellen at work in at her corner- When we are not taking photos, she has the window open beside her. The little Oriental seat in front of her made by ourselves and of old pin cusions and a packing box and two little rugs. Isn't it pretty? The back is all padded-". On verso of Violet and Hester: "I at work and Hester sitting talking to me-". Photos are slightly age faded, a few corners and sides with small chips, else very good. Exceedingly scarce private photographs of Violet Oakley's studio with artist friend and sister.

        LORD JIM

1900. A Tale. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1900. Original light green cloth decorated in black. First Edition of Conrad's fifth (and many would say his greatest) book, the psychological study of a mariner trying to recover his lost honor. Conrad planned to write only a short story when he began LORD JIM, with an eye toward forming a volume consisting of it, "Youth" and "Heart of Darkness"; however, once he got going, the story lengthened into six times its conceived size, and of course it had to become a book unto itself.~Although 2,105 copies of this book were printed, we find it today to be (along with THE SECRET AGENT) the scarcest of Conrad's first editions -- and even then it usually turns up with the cloth quite soiled and bubbled. This, however, is in very good-to-near-fine condition (minor cover soil, a bit of rubbing, but well less than the norm) -- highly collectible condition for LORD JIM. Cagle A5a.1. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case.

Groups without small subgroups; Small subgroups of finite-dimensional groups.Princeton: University Press, 1952.

First edition of these two papers which together constitute the solution of Hilbert's Fifth Problem. Original wrappers, signed by Montgomery.<br/><br/> In 1900 David Hilbert put forward a list of 23 unsolved problems he viewed as important in guiding the development of mathematics in the next century. His fifth problem was concerned with the various different notions of a group. The idea of a group itself had been put forward in the early nineteenth century by Cauchy and Galois, but the groups they considered were generally 'discrete', having only a finite number of elements. Towards the end of the century the Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie studied groups with continuous parameters, and these 'Lie groups' have proved to be of great importance both in mathematics and physics in the twentieth century. <br/><br/> In a Lie group the operation of group multiplication is 'differentiable', but one can also ask only that this operation is 'continuous' leading to the notion of a 'topological group'. Every Lie group is a topological group, but not every topological group is a Lie group. In the fifth of his problems, Hilbert asked for a topological characterization of Lie groups. Later mathematicians have interpreted Hilbert's question as follows: is every topological group that is 'locally' the same as a Euclidean space automatically a Lie group (every Lie group is by definition locally Euclidean)? <br/><br/> This question was answered in the affirmative in the two papers offered. The crucial idea turned out to be that of a topological group with 'no small subgroups': this means that some neighbourhood of the identity element of the group should contain no subgroup with more than one element (it is easy to show that Lie groups have no small subgroups). In the first paper, Gleason showed that a topological group with no small subgroups is a Lie group. In the second paper, Montgomery and Zippin showed that a topological group that is locally Euclidean has no small subgroups. Putting these two results together therefore gives an affirmative answer to Hilbert's question. <br/><br/> Deane Montgomery (1909-92) attended Hamline University, Saint Paul, Minnesota, and then went to the University of Iowa, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1933 with a thesis on point-set topology. He then went to Harvard University, where he was a National Research Council fellow in 1933-4. The following year, he was again an NRC fellow, this time at Princeton University, where the Institute for Advanced Study had just been established. In 1935, Montgomery was appointed assistant professor at Smith College. He was promoted to associate professor in 1938 and then full professor in 1941. In 1941-2, he was a Guggenheim fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study. After a year back at Smith in 1942, he returned to Princeton in 1943 to teach Army students. He undertook other war work at that time, working with John von Neumann on numerical analysis. In 1946, he left Smith to accept an appointment as associate professor at Yale University but then returned to the Institute for Advanced Study in 1948 as a permanent member, becoming a professor in 1951. <br/><br/> At the Institute, Montgomery was at the centre of activity in topology, running the topology seminar for many years. Early in his career, his research interests had shifted from point-set topology to topological transformation groups. In 1955, in collaboration with Zippin, Montgomery published the monograph Topological Transformation Groups, in which he gave a connected account of the work leading to the solution of Hilbert's Fifth Problem. He continued to work on transformation groups, studying with a variety of collaborators such groups and their relations to surgery theory. Montgomery remained at the Institute until 1988. <br/><br/> Montgomery was vice-president of the American Mathematical Society in 1952-3 and president in 1961-2. In 1988, he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the American Mathematical Society for his lasting impact on mathematics, particularly mathematics in the United States. In 1955, he was elected a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and in 1958 was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.. Two papers in Annals of Mathematics, Second Series, Vol. 56, No. 2, pp. 193-212 & 213-241, complete journal issue in original printed wrappers (short tear to upper left corner of front wrapper, two small rust stains to rear wrapper.       1900. With Numerous Illustrations by H. J. Ford. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. Original grey cloth pictorially decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. First Edition of the sixth "Fairy Book" organized and edited by Andrew Lang. There were twelve in all, each a different color, published from 1889 (BLUE) through 1910 (LILAC). In these books Lang retold many well-known fairy tales, not only for juveniles but also for adults. In their beautiful pictorial gilt bindings and profusely illustrated by Henry J. Ford, these fairy books were immensely popular holiday gifts among family members. THE GREY FAIRY BOOK contains 35 brief fairy tales, including "The Goblin Pony," "The Goat-faced Girl," "Udea and her Seven Brothers," "The Street Musicians" and "Prunella."~This copy is in near-fine condition, with scarcely any external soil or wear (just a slight bit of rubbing at the extremities). The half-title (which is the only leaf with some foxing) has a small hole from overzealous erasure, and the leaves bear a few smudges from some child&#39;s dirty fingers -- but we do not see these Fairy Books in much better condition.

Nicholson, Catalogue of pre-1900 imprints relating to America in the Royal Library Brussels, (1983), A428; Nissen, ZBI 175; Palau 20975; Sabin 2541. First French edition of an account on the voyage to South America by the Spaniard Don Félix de Azara (1746-1811), partly published in Spanish in Madrid, 1802-1805, giving a very detailed, charming and interesting overview of the geography and natural history of Paraguay and surrounding areas. As a Spanish army officer De Azara was sent to Paraguay to take part in the cartographic work of a commission that had to settle the dispute about the boundary between Spanish Paraguay and Portuguese Brazil. What started as a hobby grew out to twenty years of studying the society, culture and geographical circumstances of the region, as well as the behaviour of birds and mammals. The work was translated in French by Sonnini who added considerably to the importance of the book. The atlas contains beautifully engraved and very detailed maps and illustrations. As the prisoners brought in, he is shocked to recognize one of them: a woman he once loved. Katusha was a common girl raised by Nekhlyudov&#39;s rich aunts; she was only sixteen when Nekhlyudov had seduced her during one of his visits. She had gotten pregnant and gave birth to a child who later died in a hospital for foundlings. Nekhlyudov had no intention to marry Katusha. He had quickly forgotten about the affair and went on with his life. Now he learns that what was only a brief adventure to him had ruined Katusha&#39;s whole life. She is now a prostitute, charged with theft and poisoning. The jury finds her not guilty of theft and believes that while she may have administered the poison she did so unknowingly. However, the jury inadvertently fails to put the words "no intent to take life" in the verdict, and Katusha is sentenced to hard labor in Siberia. Realizing that he was the one who pushed Katusha onto the wrong path and feeling guilty, Nekhlyudov attempts to correct the mistake, but there is not much he can do. His conscience awakes, he goes through a deep transformation. He decides to follow Katusha to Siberia and to marry her. When he meets with her and tells her that, she, of course, does not believe him. However, her defenses slowly go down as she sees that Nekhlyudov&#39;s change of heart is full and sincere..

The Works of William Shakspere. In three volumes

London - George Routledge and Sons, 1900 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A lovely set of Knight&#39;s comprehensive collection of Shakespeare&#39;s works. Complete in three volumes. Each volume features a portrait frontispiece. Includes: The Tempest; Much Ado About Nothing; A Midsummer-Night&#39;s Dream; As You Like It; Taming of the Shrew; Twelfth Night; Macbeth; Hamlet; JuliusCaesar; Antony and Cleopatra; King Richard II and King Richard III; King Henry IV, V, VI and VIII; Romeo and Juliet; Othello; King Lear and many others. Throughout his career, Charles Knight (17911873) had always been an author as well as editor and publisher. However, his first major project as an author took shape in 1837, when he resolved to produce a pictorial edition of Shakespeare&#39;s works. He started searching for authentic visual materials and began a critical reading of the texts. His edition was based substantiallyindeed, too substantiallyon the first folio edition, although he made comparisons with other quartos and, in some cases, with originals in the British Museum. His background reading led to a deep interest in Shakespeare&#39;s life and the edition, published between 1838 and 1841 (he published six later editions of the works of Shakespeare), was prefaced with a one-volume biography. Knight succeeded in contextualizing Shakespeare&#39;s life as no biographer except Nathan Drake had done, and in dismissing a couple of the more absurd legends surrounding the playwright&#39;s early life. But he was prone to speculationeven suggesting that Shakespeare had visited Italy and Scotlandand all too dependent on J. P. Collier&#39;s forgeries, the traces of which were visible even in the last revised edition. DNB. Condition: In half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, excellent with just minor shelfwear andslight sunning to the spines and leather of the front board of Volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean with just a few faint spots to the endpapers. Overall: NEAR FINE..

        Chinoiseries / Costumes d&#39;Antan

(France / China, c. 1900). Octavo. (22)pp. Album of Chinese landscapes in original watercolors, facing depictions of women&#39;s antique costumes painted on silk, interleaved with tissue. "Chinoiserie" refers to European art characterized by imagery of a romanticized China, and it appears that the brightly-colored landscapes in this album were done later than the silk paintings, most likely by a Western artist. Included are market scenes, depictions of boats on a river, and pagodas. The delicate paintings of costumes on silk are done in a much more traditional Chinese style. Great attention is paid to details, such as the knotted red and green silk cords worn around the women&#39;s waists, floral hair ornaments, and the subtle patterns of their loose-sleeved robes. One woman carries a basket of flowers, another poses beside a deer, and one is dressed as a warrior with a sword, in a jacket and loose trousers, tying on her knee guards. The costumes are colored in soft shades of blue, pink, and green. Very fine in soft gilt-titled white calf with raised bands on the spine, blind-tooled with decorative rules. Housed in a flannel-lined box.
