Illustrations of the botany of captain Cook's voyage round the world in H.M.S. Endeavour in 1768-71. Australian plants.

. London, printed by order of the Trustees of the British Museum, 1900-1905. Three parts in three. Folio (47.5 x 31.5 cm). Title and 102 pp., followed by 320 lithographed plates (numbered 1-318, 41A, and 45A) and three folding maps. The plates are photolithographic reproductions of the original engraved proof plates by F.P. Nodder, James Miller, J.F. Miller, and John Cleveley that were never published. The set is bound in uniform black buckram with gilt lettering on spine, reading: "Cook's First voyage. Australian plants.", and for each volume the plate numbers it contains.* One of only 300 sets produced, being the first published edition of nearly all the botanical illustrations by Banks and Solander on Australian plants. This set is the first substantial selection made from the copper plates that were engraved under Joseph Banks' direction between 1772 and 1784. The botanical specimen collected during Cook's voyage had been carefully depicted as watercolours by several artists, both during and after return of the expedition, under supervision of Banks and Solander. At least 743 engraved copperplates of superb quality were then made from the completed watercolour drawings, by eighteen selected engravers over the years 1771-1784. However for various reasons, Banks never got to publishing these plates and after his death they were bequeathed to the British Museum. It took until 1901 before the museum published a first selection of these plates, though a few of them had been used to illustrate other books. The present publication, with identifications by J. Britten, represents the first appearance of most of the images and is a magnificent overview of the first botanical study of Australian plants. Published in three parts (in 1900, 1901, and 1905), each part consisted of text and plates, though the page numbers of the text followed up on each other. In this copy, all text has been bound together at the start of the first volume, preceded by one general title page dated 1905 (this is the title page of part III). The title pages for parts I and II were left out, as per the instructions of the binder: after completion of the publication, the set was meant to be bound like this and the titles of parts I and II were only meant for temporary use. Bindings with only some light shelf wear, contents mostly very clean. Nearly all plates without foxing or spotting, only a few plates (mainly towards end of vol III) with some scattered spotting. A very good set. Nissen BBI, 74; Mitchell Library 934; Stafleu & Cowan, 295..

Photograph album of an Important Silver Collection.

Ca 1900-20's - A careful photographic record of an extremely important silver collection, magnificently bound in full red elaborately gilt morocco by Ed. Berck, Paris. 62 professional photographs, 8x10" black & whites, possibly recorded for insurance purposes, mounted in plastic sleeves, with a description of the items, maker and date on the opposite page. The owners of this important collection are unknown, indicated only by the gilt letters "I.W." on the front cover, and the engraved "C.P.W." on the vanity set photograph. The striking thing about the collection is the quality & early date of the pieces. There are four pieces by the famed Huguenot silversmith, Paul Lamerie (silver mirror 1745; 3 silver shells 1724; tea kettle & stand 1731; cake basket 1734.) There are no less than five pieces from the Queen Anne period (silver tea kettle & stand, 1708 by Lewis Mettayer; teapot 1714 by Humphrey Payne; coffee pot 1709 by Edward Pearce; tea caddy 1712 by Richard Watts; silver gilt cake tazza 1712 by David Willaume.) There are many George I pieces, including a rare set of 4 candlesticks by Edward Pearce dated 1720. The bulk of the collection is George II, with some George III pieces. The silver encompasses the full range of a households' necessities & trivialities - a mirror, silver shells, tea kettles, cake basket, coffee pots, tea caddies, brandy saucepan, tea strainer, cream pitchers, sugar tongs, bowls & covers, a ewer, covered entree dishes, sauceboats, a cake tazza, sugar castors, a candle snuffer & stand, spoon trays, candle sticks, salt cellars and spoons, pepper pots, waiters, meat platters, tea trays, set of 12 silver plates, basting spoon, salad servers, pie server, asparagus tongs, butter spades, sauce ladles, skewers, dessert & dinner flatware & spirit labels. The only two later pieces, which look to be ca. 1910-20, are a vanity set & hip flask. Thankfully, those are the only ones which appear to be monogrammed by the owners. A handsome contemporary record of an outstanding silver collection, many pieces of which by now are probably held in museums. Oblong 4to, 9 1/4 x 13", red gilt morocco, with slipcase (red morocco foredge, marbled paper boards). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

La Femme dans la Décoration Moderne

Paris: Librairie de L'Art Ancien et Moderne, (c. 1900). Paris: Librairie de L'Art Ancien et Moderne, (c. 1900). Folio. (ii), XXXpp. A portfolio containing thirty color plates, each with several Art Nouveau depictions of women by the Vienna Secession artist Julius Klinger. The illustrations derive from the decorative arts of the period, including painting, design, posters, wallpaper, ceramics, and jewelry, and include nudes, fashion illustrations, and ornate borders. In some examples, the figures of women are incorporated into repeating patterns, while others are adorned with floral motifs or framed by sinuous lines and curves. Portraits depict the active "femme nouvelle" playing piano, taking photographs, playing tennis, fencing, bathing in the sea, and out on promenade in the latest fashions. The hedonistic "demimonde" is also represented, drinking, smoking, and dancing. Other illustrations are more fantastical, representing women as fairies with butterfly wings, mermaids, or forest nymphs. The period's taste for orientalism and exoticism is also evident in designs that incorporate Egyptian and African elements, such as scarabs and headdresses, lions, and peacocks. The lithographs are printed in bold shades of orange, blue, green, yellow, and brown. Born in Vienna, Klinger's studied at the Technologisches Gewerbemuseum near Vienna, and worked for the Viennese fashion magazine Wiener Mode. After moving to Munich in 1896, Klinger worked for several art journals and contributed to the Jugendstil magazine Die Jugend from 1897 to 1902. A table of contents provides descriptions of the plates. Housed in a portfolio bearing Art-Nouveau illustrated labels to both covers. Corners and spine of portfolio show some wear, and there is a small spot of rubbing to the front label, else very fine.

        Ian Hamilton's March

New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Here is a superlative copy for collectors - as good as they come. This is Churchill's fifth book and the second of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. It was during this conflict that Churchill was captured by the Boers. His daring escape made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. The publisher issued just 1533 copies of this first American edition, only printing (against 5003 British first edition, first printing copies). The American edition is bound in pebble grain red cloth that proved quite susceptible to blotchy wear and soiling, particularly on the spine. Offered here is a superlative, collector-grade example. The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square with vivid, unfaded color and bright gilt. We note only very slight wear at the spine ends and corners. The contents are likewise exceptional - crisp, clean, bright, and tight. We find no spotting and no previous ownership marks of any kind. All maps and plans are present and perfectly preserved, as is the frontispiece and tissue guard. The top edge gilt remains bright with only slight scuffing. The fore and bottom edges remain clean.         Savrola

New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Here is a spectacular, collector-grade copy of the true first edition of Churchill's third book and only novel. A very young Churchill was exuberant about publication at the time, even though he later made self-deprecating comments about the book. Moreover, even though Savrola was his third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. It certainly makes for an interesting insight into the early perspective and sentiment of the then very young Churchill. Of note, this is one of the few Churchill books for which the U.S. edition is the true first edition. In fact, the British first edition was issued from American plates. This U.S. first edition is thus the first Churchill book published in the 20th Century. Here is a superlative, near-fine plus example - about as good as they come and quite scarce thus. The blue cloth binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with sharp corners and bright gilt. We note only trivial wear at the spine ends and corners. Spine presentation is exceptional, with no toning or soiling of the dark blue cloth and vividly bright gilt. The contents are likewise noteworthy - crisp, clean, and bright. No spotting. No age-toning. Even the page edges are uncommonly bright. The only complaint is the sole previous ownership mark - the rather prominent inked initials and last name of a previous owner on the ffep. This previous owner name has ghosted lightly onto the facing front pastedown and the ink has bled through to the ffep verso and slightly onto the half title. Apart from this nit, this is about as fine a copy as we have ever seen or offered. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A3.1.a, Woods/ICS A3(a.1), Langworth p.39.

        Ian Hamilton's March

New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. Near fine. Here is a collector-worthy copy of the U.S. first edition of Churchill's fifth book - the second of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. It was during this conflict that Churchill was captured by the Boers. His daring escape made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill was first elected to Parliament the same year his two Boer War books - London to Ladysmith via Pretoria and Ian Hamilton's March - were published. This American edition is considerably more scarce than the British; the publisher issued just 1533 copies (against 5003 British first edition, first printing copies). The edition is bound in pebble grain red cloth that proved quite susceptible to blotchy wear and soiling, particularly on the spine. Here is an unusually well preserved, near-fine example for collectors. The red cloth binding is highly unusual in that it suffers almost none of the scuffing and uneven coloration endemic to this edition. Most notably the spine remains absolutely uniform in color with bright gilt and only trivial wear limited to the spine corners. There is slight overall soiling, but this does not detract from the overall appearance and particularly impressive shelf presentation. The contents remain clean with no spotting. The sole previous ownership mark noted is the remnant of a mostly removed bookplate at the rear pastedown. The top edge gilt remains bright. The fore edge is modestly age-toned. The binding is very slightly loose at the front gutter but not enough to be called tender, with no damage to the binding integrity and no splitting of the endpapers. A very handsome copy, scarce thus. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A8.2, Woods/ICS A5(ca), Langworth p.61.

The Old Closes & Streets of Glasgow - engraved by Annan from Photographs taken for the City of Glasgow Improvement Trust. With an Introduction by William Young, R. S. W

Glasgow James MacLehose & Sons 1900. G: in Good condition without dust jacket as issued. Cover rubbed and faded. Content in VG condition. Occasional slight page-edge foxing Third Edition Red/gilt hardback cloth cover with bevelled boards 390mm x 290mm (15" x 11"). 23pp + plates. 50 plates. Annan printed this album in three editions in 1871, 1877, and 1900 respectively according to Fisher. The 1871 process was calotype, 1877, carbon, and 1900 a gravure process. The City Improvement Trust was the body which was charged with the task of cleaning up the squalid living conditions that existed in the city in the second half of the nineteenth century. Learning from visits to Paris, to see the work of Baron Haussmann, the trustees were very successful in adapting the traditional tenement house style to rehouse many thousands of people. This edition was limited to 150 copies.

        Savrola

London: Longmans, Green, and Company, 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. This is Churchill's third book and only novel. Only 1,500 copies of the first British impression were printed and the survival rate is low, making this a great rarity and considerably more scarce than the U.S. first edition. Here is a first British edition, fist printing. This is an honest first edition that shows some wear and age, but is original and unrestored. The binding is tight and unfaded with bright gilt, but slightly cocked. The green cloth boards are sound, but show a little wear, particularly at the corners. The spine shows light wear along the hinges, as well as some wear at head and tail with just a little fraying at the head. There is a small .25 inch tear above the title on spine. The original black endpapers are intact. The webbing shows a bit at the rear hinge, but the binding is still snug and sound. There is minor spotting throughout, as is common with this edition. The spotting is heavier at the endpapers. There are no bookplates or inscriptions. But interestingly, the ffep is signed "W. Churchill R.H." With a little hope and imagination, one could imagine that "R.H." is a young Churchill, recently elected to Parliament, pompously putting the abbreviation for "Right Honourable" after his name - However, this signature does not look to us like an authentic author signature.         Savrola

London: Longmans Green & Co., 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fair. A rare prize - the first printing of the Colonial edition of Churchill's only novel. Far more rare than first U.S. or British Home first editions. Only 1,670 Colonial editions were issued in the decorative hardcover binding - and this small number includes the second and third printings. The survival rate was poor given the tropical climates in much of the colonies. Those few examples that do survive are often quite worn and re-backed or re-bound. This is an original, unrestored copy. The contents are unusually bright and clean for a Colonial copy, with only a very few scattered spots throughout and on the text block edges. The distinctive original swan and ship endpapers are intact (though partially split at the rear hinge). Previous ownership markings are limited to an inked "X" and penciled "8" on the front pastedown, an oval ink stamp of the "Foxhill Public Library" on the ffep, and the faint impression of the same ink stamp on the top edge of the text block. (Please note that, apart from evidence of a previous removal of a spine sticker, there are no other ex-library markings.) The original binding is substantially intact, but showing wear. Notably, the distinctive pictorial front cover is fully intact with only light surface wear. Also noteworthy, the spine retain bright gilt and strong original background color without typical soiling and toning. Nonetheless, the spine shows considerable wear at the hinges and ends. The cloth is entirely worn through at the rear hinge and nearly so along the front hinge. There is a bit of residue indicating sticker removal on the lower third of the spine. The undecorated rear cover is fully intact, but with some significant abrasion spots. The rear cover is still attached, but definitely loose and fragile. This rare example of the first Colonial edition, first printing can be appreciated in its unrestored state, but certainly would be an excellent candidate for rebacking and minor restoration.
