        London to Ladysmith via Pretoria

New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. This is Churchill's fourth book and the first of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. It was during this conflict that Churchill was captured by the Boers and made a daring escape that made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. The American edition offered here is more scarce than the British, with a single printing of just 3,000 copies issued. The pebble grain red cloth of this edition proved durable, but susceptible to blotchy wear and discoloration, particularly on the spine. This copy is a very good+, collector worthy example. The binding is tight and square, retaining a nicely rounded spine. The spine retains unusually bright color and gilt, though some of the usual light wear is present, as is a small blemish at the left side of the author's name. Nonetheless, spine presentation is far above average. The covers likewise retain vivid color and bright gilt. The corners are all just a bit soft and there is a very small black ink mark on the blank rear cover. The contents are clean and tight with all maps and plans present and intact. No spotting. There is an inked previous owner name and note dated "Oct 20th 1934" on the ffep. The top edge gilt remains bright. The page edges show the typical age toning.       New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Here is a spectacular, collector-grade copy of the true first edition of Churchill's third book and only novel. A very young Churchill was exuberant about publication at the time, even though he later made self-deprecating comments about the book. Moreover, even though Savrola was his third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. It certainly makes for an interesting insight into the early perspective and sentiment of the then very young Churchill. Of note, this is one of the few Churchill books for which the U.S. edition is the true first edition. In fact, the British first edition was issued from American plates. This U.S. first edition is thus the first Churchill book published in the 20th Century. Here is a superlative, near-fine plus example - about as good as they come and quite scarce thus. The blue cloth binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with sharp corners and bright gilt. We note only trivial wear at the spine ends and corners. Spine presentation is exceptional, with no toning or soiling of the dark blue cloth and vividly bright gilt. The contents are likewise noteworthy - crisp, clean, and bright. No spotting. No age-toning. Even the page edges are uncommonly bright. The only complaint is the sole previous ownership mark - the rather prominent inked initials and last name of a previous owner on the ffep. This previous owner name has ghosted lightly onto the facing front pastedown and the ink has bled through to the ffep verso and slightly onto the half title. Apart from this nit, this is about as fine a copy as we have ever seen or offered. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A3.1.a, Woods/ICS A3(a.1), Langworth p.39.

London & New York: Harper, 1900. Hardcover. Gitterman's small bookplate tipped to the front free endpaper. Repaired tear to the spine head not touching the lettering. A little cocked with rubbing along spine edges. Very Good. Preceded by an edition published by Stokes earlier in the year with the subtitle: "The Story of a Very Young Couple." This copy INSCRIBED on the half title page to Joseph Gitterman on Monday Oct. 31 [1921] and SIGNED "H. G. Wells" with a fancy flourish at the end. In addition Wells writes, "This is among the books I care for most," signing with his initials. Indeed Wells believed that this title and his later book KIPPS were his two books most likely to survive. Time, of course, has proven him wrong.

Original Art: Jewish Couple in Psychiatrist's Waiting Room

Original art. Acrylic on canvas backed with board. Framed to approximately 29.5" x 23.5". Signed "X. Cugat" lower right. A couple of wrinkles on the canvas, else fine. A satirical painting of a Jewish husband sitting in the waiting room of a psychiatrist, with his wife, who is dressed like a nun. Cugat probably had as much to do with bringing a Latin flavor to American music as any other musician. Born in 1900 in Spain, he emigrated with his family to Cuba when he was five. Trained as a violinist, he moved to New York as a teenager to take advantage of the short-lived tango craze. When it inevitably ended, he employed his talents as an artist to work as a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times and eventually had his cartoons syndicated by King Features. As sound began to be used in movies, he assembled another tango band that had some success. He took his band to New York where it became the resident band for the new Waldorf Astoria. A notorious womanizer, he had four wives and always put attractive women in his groups. He gave Rita Hayworth one of her first jobs, and his third wife was blonde bombshell and singer Abbe Lane. In the mid-1960s, he took another blonde as a wife, who became the famous "cuchi-cuchi girl" Charo. His brother, Francis Cugat, also harbored an artistic bent, and was the artist who created the striking dust jacket art for F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Shipping extra. .

A lovely sketch of an Alaska brewery, showing a large brew house set against the side of a hill, with several outbuildings in the background. The large sign above the door reads, "City Brewery," and the proprietor is shown tapping a keg in the middle foreground. A quaint picture of the support industry so vital to the Klondike Gold Rush.
