A scientific analysis of the deadly wreck of the Yukon River Steamer Florence S. in Alaska

Fine content Autograph Manuscript Signed \"James. P Kimball,\" four pages, 8.25\" x 12.5\", titled \"Wreck of the Florence S.\" Offered together with a letterpress copy of the same manuscript. Some toning, marginal wear and minor tears.Kimball authors his own account of the ship\'s capsizing in the Yukon River in July 1900 that resulted in the deaths of three passengers. Kimball who was in Alaska at the time working on a survey, offers an analysis of the disaster from an engineering standpoint: \"Total destruction was wrought in an instant but too sharp a turn in an 8-mile current with a boat so loaded down that her guards were half under water. Crates of furniture on the hurricane [sic] deck doubtless added to her instability, which was obvious to all the passengers. A few moments of listing first to one side - then to the other - gave the last warning of her instability. With a final and decisive list to the starboard followed by a lurch, the cargo was spilled and the boat capsized. The top-hamp

New York: Russell, 1900. 4to, x, 190pp, color frontispiece and 15 two-color plates within the pagination. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, a really good copy of a book rarely found in even adequate condition. In a new box. First edition, in the first state binding with pictorial endpapers. This is BaumÕs first book (although Mother Goose In Prose was published first). This title was an obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of Ã’Alice In WonderlandÓ; it was late reworked and published as Ã’The Surprising Adventures of the Magical Monarch of MoÓ. Aleph-Bet notes: Ã’A notoriously rare Baum fantasy, that when found is usually lacking the frontis.Ó Not in Cotsen, Oppenheimer, Osborne, or Gumuchian. & & Peter Hanff noted: Ã’The volume has sixteen color inserts, including the title page, as follows: facing the title page, the title page, and facing pages 4, 12, 28, 38, 48, 60, 72, 92, 104, 120, 132, 152, 168, and 186. The plates, though unnumbered, are included in the pagination. Justin Schiller once had a file copy from the publisher that was annotated to indicate that the firm had run short of frontispieces.Ó

New York: R.H. Russell, 1900. Printed by D.B. Updike, The Merrymount Press, Boston (verso of title-page).Edition DeLuxe, one of 100 copies signed by the publisher. Folio (12 3/8 x 9 inches; 314 x 228 mm.). xxiv, 298, [1], [1 blank] pp. Title-page printed in red and black. Spine slightly faded, slight offsetting from turn-ins onto endpapers. A fine copy."Parrish began a series of drawings in the spring of 1898 to illustrate the well-known book Knickerbocker's History of New York. A delightful parody on the history of colonial New York written by Washington Irving in 1809, Diedrich Knickerbocker's history was reprinted with Parrish's drawings in 1900 by R.H. Russell of New York. The artist worked the series into his schedule of commissions for magazine and poster designs, finishing the last of the nine drawings in September, 1899, a year and a half after the first one was begun.Parrish's visual interpretations of Washington Irving's Knickerbocker characters were as amusing as the text for which they were created. In depicting Oloffe Van Kortlandt's dream of the future New York (Oloffe, by selecting the site for New Amsterdam, became America's first great land speculator), Parrish set him against a turn-of-the-century Manhattan skyline. The portly little dreamer, perched in a treetop, reflects the burlesque humor of Irving's satirical history. Washington Irving characterized the American Indian as the innocent victim of the European settlers' greed, describing the Indian race as one which lived in harmony with its environment until "the benevolent inhabitants of Europe. [beheld] their sad condition. [and] immediately went to work to ameliorate and improve it. They introduced among them rum, gin, brandy, and the other comforts of life An Indian man, still reacting from the sting of a swallow of strong alcohol, appears somewhat uncertain about this gift from the white man in Parrish's illustration for this passage. The two-dimensional drawing, in ink, disregards linear perspective and, with the contrasting shading in lithographic crayon to give volume to the figure, creates an unusual juxtaposition of sizes and distances which adds significantly to the interest of the composition. The distant windmill is drawn with the same attention to minute detail as the demijohn sitting on the wall in the foreground. In both his drawings and his paintings the artist regularly exercised with great skill his preference for giving equal attention to details near and distant. A fine set.The Arabian Nights’ Entertainments is “a collection of ancient Persian-Indian-Arabian tales, originally in Arabic, arranged in its present form about 1450, probably in Cairo. The collection is also known as A Thousand and One Nights. Although the stories are discrete in plot, they are unified by Scheherazade, the supposed teller; she postpones her execution by telling her husband Schahriah, a story night after night, without revealing the climax until the following session…Sir Richard Burton’s monumental version…was issued only to subscribers by the Kamashastra Society of Benares in 1885-86. Among the more recent editions is [one] by Powys Mathers” (Benét’s Reader’s Encyclopedia). The most popular stories include “Aladdin,” “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves,” and “Sinbad the Sailor.”"Burton arrived at Bombay in October 1842 and was posted to Baroda, about 400 kilometres to the north, where he spent much of his time perfecting his knowledge of Hindustani and Arabic." First Edition of ìLord JimîCONRAD, Joseph. Lord Jim. A Tale. Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1900.First edition. Octavo (7 3/8 x 5 inches; 189 x 127 mm). [6], 451, [1, blank] pp.Original pale green linen-grain cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in black on front cover and decoratively stamped in black and lettered in gilt on spine. Largely unopened. Endpapers very slightly browned. Some occasional light foxing. Gilt very bright. About fine.ìProbably Conradís most popular and accessible work, the novel concerns a young Englishman who decides on a career at sea \'after a course of light holiday literature\'. However, the sea does not live up to his romantic expectations. The crisis comes when the Patna, with its 800 passengers, collides at sea, while Jim, the chief mate and officer on watch, had been day-dreaming about heroic adventures. Not only does Jim fail to live up to his own romantic self-image, he fails in his duty as an officer. In the second half of the novel he is given another chance and, in the romantic world of Patusan, he is allowed to realized his romantic expectations until the arrival of the piratical Gentleman Brown confronts him with a second crisis. Apart from its engagement with Conradian concerns of isolation, identity, betrayal, solidarity, and moral tests, the novel also marked a development in Conrad\'s narrative method both in its handling of narration and in its use of time-shiftî (The Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century Literature in English).Keating 25. Little is known of gambling bookie Charles Drew, but that his residence and business were based in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, in Northeast England, he married Ann Brown on 19 Jul 1852 at the South Shields St. Hilda parish church, and that he actively, illegally solicited gambling on streets by circulating betting cards for horse races. On 15 March 1901, the South Shields Daily Gazette reported on Drew's illegal activities: "At South Shields to-day, Charles Drew, bookmaker, was charged with betting East Street on Thursday last." Detective Sanderson and other officers deposed to the defendant being in the street taking bets in the usual way from 12 p.m. till 3 p.m. on the day named..." Several decades later, the gambling pastime which was already firmly entrenched in British culture would finally become a legal pastime. 1 September 1960, BBC: "... 1 January 1961 gambling for small sums will be legal for games of skill... betting shops will take gambling off the streets... At the moment, anyone who wants to place a bet on the horses has to demonstrate they have enough credit to set up an account with a bookmaker and do their dealings by telephone...."

        Philosophie des Geldes

Leipzig: Duncker & Humblot,, 1900. Octavo (234 × 158 mm). Contemporary pebble grained caalf aand marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered gilt, marbled edges. Joints lightly rubbed, small ink splash to fore edge. A very good copy. First edition of Simmel's "seminal work" (Herbert Frankel in The New Palgrave). "Simmel's philosophy tried always to find in single appearances or instances of life, the meaning of the whole. As one of these he selected money. He saw it in functional relativistic terms: the symbol of the spirit, forms and thought of modern civilization. He viewed money not in mechanical terms but as a conflict between our abstract conceptions of money and the social trust on which it is based. He elucidated the moral basis of the monetary order and warned that it might be subverted through our tendency to think of money in purely abstract terms. If it was through John Maynard Keynes that the revolt against the predominant 19th-century view of money was made respectable, it was Simmel who had laid bare the causes of that revolt." (ibid.)

Caricature of the Author Philip James Bailey (1816-1902)

. Near Fine. N.d., circa 1900. The pen and ink ink drawing is 20 by 11.5 cm. Depicted is Philip James Bailey, who is carrying under his arms his 1839 magnum opus, the very long poem, "Festus", admired by Tennyson and other leading poets of the day, and supposedly an influence on James Joyce. The work was Bailey's only success, and he continued to add to it during his long life following its initial appearance. It is this pattern of accretions which Ford would appear to be lampooning in this caricature. Ford is best remembered today for illustrating the dozen Andrew Lang colored fairy book series, and next for illustrating works by Scott, Kipling and many others. He also did free-standing painting, and some of his work belongs now to museum collections. Matted.

Lebensrad.

Kanten gering berieben, ansonsten bemerkenswert wohlerhaltenes Exemplar.

Undated.Undated pen and ink drawing on paper circa 1900, image size approximately: 145 x 105 mm, 5½ x 4 inches. It depicts a little girl standing on a sandy shore in a long checked dress with a frill at the hem, wearing a straw hat, looking down at a beautiful dressed doll obviously left behind by some little rich girl. The caption, not visible on the image, is "One day she found a great treasure". Farmiloe has signed the bottom right corner "Edith Farmiloe". A charming image but we have failed to discover whether or not it was done for a children's book. Fine condition, in a cream mount, ready for framing. Edith Farmiloe (active 1893 - 1908), well known for her sympathetic and humorous drawings of slum children and ragamuffins, illustrated several of her own books plus a few Dumpy books and one for E.V. Lucas. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING. POSTAGE AT COST.
