Vale Press Shakespeare] WORKS: 39 Volumes Including SONNETS and POEMS

London: Hacon & Ricketts at the Vale Press, 1900-1903. London: Hacon & Ricketts at the Vale Press, 1900-1903. Limited Edition, one of 310 copies. Hard Cover. Royal Octavo. Charles Ricketts. Published by Hacon & Ricketts at the Vale Press; printed under Charles Ricketts's supervision at the Ballantyne Press from April 1900 to June 1903; opening page of each play is decorated with one of three full-page borders designed by Ricketts along with numerous half borders embellishing the text throughout each volume; bound in green cloth and stamped in blind with a design by Ricketts; gilt title on the spine; printed on handmade paper with mermaid watermark using the Avon font designed especially for this set and arguably the most elegant and readable of his three typefaces. This was the first fine press edition of Shakespeare's Works. While initially scheduled to start work in December of 1899, a fire at the Ballantyne Press destroyed not only the work to date on Hamlet, but a sizable portion of Ricketts's work. The fire was largely responsible for the closing of the Vale Press in 1904, though over the next few years Ricketts restarted and completed the Vale Shakespeare and about a dozen volumes to which he was already committed. The final volume of the Vale Shakespeare, Henry VIII was the last book issued from the Press except for Bibliography of Books Published by Hacon and Ricketts after which the matrices and punches were symbolically cast into the Thames. The Vale Shakespeare remains among the finest edition of Shakespeare's works and is increasingly difficult to find complete. This set is in Very Good condition with some toning to the spines as usual; spine ends softened and lightly frayed on occasion; contents are clean and largely free of the foxing that is so often found--only a few volumes are lightly foxed; a number of the volumes have been carelessly opened leaving a rough top-edge on some pages, a relatively minor issue with only one exception--there is one large closed tear that runs from the top edge to the inner margin of one leaf of “Antony and Cleopatra.” Watry B44.

There is some very minor rubbing to the corners and the upper spine extremities. The bottom of the spine has been professionally and almost invisibly strengthened. This is a remarkable copy, in near fine condition. Housed in a dark green cloth clamshell case. Provenance: Bradley Martin with the bookplate of Mildred Greehill on the front paste-down."[Over] a century after this book?s first publication, few Americans are unfamiliar with the image of Dorothy being carried by a Kansas cyclone into the magical land of Oz, where she meets the scarecrow, the tin woodman, and the cowardly lion. Their adventures looking for the Emerald City and the wizard have become a permanent part of American popular culture. Baum?s work, originally self-published with striking illustrations by William Warren Denslow, was an immediate success with children; its popularity now is largely based on the 1939 film, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy. In his introduction to the book, Baum argued that ?the old-time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as ?historical? the time has come for a series of newer ?wonder tales.? Modern education includes morality, therefore the modern child needs only entertainment in its wonder-tales. ? The Wonderful Wizard of Oz lays claim to a place among the turning points in the secularization of American children?s literature" (The New York Public Library?s Books of the Century).Blanck, Peter Parley to Penrod, pp. 111-113. Greene and Hanff, pp. 25-27. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Turn-of-the-Century Photograph Album of Egypt

Cairo: Photographie Fropein, 1900-5. Cairo: Photographie Fropein,, 1900-5. Oblong octavo album (138 x 242 mm). Contemporary red cloth, titles to front board gilt, marbled endpapers. 24 photographs (ranging from 56 x 77 mm to 147 x 74 mm; most approximately 145 x 50 mm) mounted on either dark grey, dark blue, or blue-grey mounting board. The majority captioned in pencil on verso. Binding a little faded and soiled, spine ends and edges of boards lightly rubbed, a few small dark marks to top edge, endpapers slightly foxed, mounting boards very gently bowed, light offsetting from photographs to verso of mounting boards. An excellent album with clear and clean photographs. A collection of panorama photographs of Cairo and surroundings, produced by the Cairo-based commercial studio Photographie Fropein. The earliest photograph is dated c. 1899, while the owner's pencil marginalia seems to have been added sometime in 1903-04. With the number of European travellers in Egypt growing during the 19th century, 'to have seen certain sites and monuments became virtually obligatory' (Lyons, Antiquity & Photography, p.11). While it can be assumed that the owner of this album did visit sites such as Thebes and Karnak, most of these do not appear in the album. Certain photographs reflect the traditional tourist itinerary, with views of Giza, Philae, and Memphis, but most are representative of everyday life. A photograph taken at Dashur, rather than depicting pyramids, portrays a local fisherman and has an extensive pencilled note describing the use of cast nets. Other subjects include dahabiyas and feluccas, local travellers, goat herds and geese flocks, as well as several views of the annual flooding of the Nile. Many of these, apart from the distinctly un-monumental character of the subject matter, are pleasingly artistic, achieving a striking simplicity in tone and composition which, combined with the realism, reflects an almost Barbizon aesthetic. Also included is a portrait photo and autograph of the British artist Frederick F. Ogilvie (1871-c.1930), who relocated to Egypt during the early 20th century to paint watercolour views of Cairo and the surrounding landscape; he occasionally exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, and Walker's Gallery, London.

The Problem of Increasing Human Energy with Special Reference to the Harnessing of the Sun's Engery." Bound in A Year of the Century Magazine vol. LX May, 1900, to October, 1900

New York: The Century Co, 1900. New York: The Century Co, 1900. First edition. In original publisher's dark pebbled cloth with floral stamping on the boards and gilt title on the spine. An excellent copy overall, with just trivial wear at the extremities. Containing the first edition of Tesla's famous article in which he discusses all known methods for harnessing energy from nature and then proposes a radical new method that he claimed would be "self-acting," essentially a perpetual motion machine run by converting ambient heat into electrical energy. & & Tesla was an innovator and inventory of the first order, working for Einstein before launching his own company with a series of important patents. Tesla is best known for his work on alternating current transformers and inductors, as well as pioneering work in radio communication. After a prominent career in the early 20th century, Tesla's work has been largely ignored until the last few decades. He is now something of a cult hero, given the vast body of work that he generated.

A collection of humorous 'Dooley' sketches by Finley Peter Dunne, with a colour illustration to frontispiece and other black and white illustrations within the text, illustrated by William Nicholson, E. W. Kemble and F. Opper. First edition. Finley Peter Dunne (1867 - 1936) was an American humorist and writer from Chicago. He published Mr. Dooley in Peace and War, a collection of his nationally syndicated Mr. Dooley sketches, in 1898. The first Dooley articles appeared when he was chief editorial writer for the Chicago Post and for a number of years he wrote the pieces without a byline or initials. Dunne wrote more thanseven hundredDooley pieces. Abouta thirdof them were printed in eight books, with their era of influence ending with the start of World War I.         An original watercolour and photograph composite image of the members of an American hunt

[circa 1900]. Gray watercolour wash, heightened with white, 32 heads of hunt members supplied as cut-around photographs mounted in position, signed 'T.A. Liebler delt.' lower right corner, blindstamp 'Reynolds Super Fine London Board' lower left. 18 3/16 x 22 5/16 inches. A high quality image, evidently the original artwork intended for reproduction by some photo-mechanical printing method. A fine composition with the landscape and horses meticulously observed. The hunt is arranged in two ranks with the exception of one horse and rider out front (perhaps the Master of the hunt) and a second arriving on the right, an apparent late-comer. In the background to the left is a building (possibly the hunt stables or kennels) which appears to be flying the American flag from a flag pole on the roof. Nothing appears to be recorded about Theodore Liebler, which is unexpected, as he was clearly an equestrian artist of some considerable ability.

Electric Waves : Being Researches on the Propagation of Electric Action with Finite Velocity Through Space

Macmillan, 1900. Macmillan, 1900. A very good 278 page hardback book, ex Wigan & District Mining & Technical College Library, with usual stamps and labels. Second Edition, 1900 (first edition was 1894). Renewal sheet has never been stamped, but the book has been read since it has scattered light pencilling, mainly concentrated in chapter two. Paper on front hinge is split, though the cloth is sound. Text block nice and tight, edges a little dusty. Light rub to corners of cover. This is the book - the one book - which started it all. Without this, no radio, no television, no cellular telephones, no modern society as we know it. To hold this book - with a foreword by Kelvin, dedicated to Helmholtz, translated by Jones - is to hold the Twentieth Century in your hand. Pulling together the earlier work of Faraday & Maxwell, Henry, Helmholtz and the rest, and building upon all of this, Hertz presents us with a summary of progress in the understanding of the propagation of electromagnetic waves up to the end of the nineteenth century, and proves in practice the existence of waves which, previously, had existed only in the abstract form of Maxwell's mathematics. A "must" for any collector of the books which mark the milestones of human knowledge. ASIN B000XCY70A. Second Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No DJ.

Busch, Wilhelm: Dichter, Maler und Zeichner (1832-1908): Eigenh. Brief (Entwurf eines Antwortbriefes) mit U. ("Wilh.Busch."). Mechtshausen. 15.
