        The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Geo M. Hill Co, Chicago, Ilinois 1900 - Author: L. (Lyman) Frank Baum Green, Hanff, Bibliographia Oziana pages 23-25. Jacob Blanck Peter Parley to Penrod pages 112 & 113. Large 8vo., green cloth, stamped in red and green. 261 pages. This mixed-state, mostly variant "C" First Edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has been restored, & two peices of the book were missing, making exact identification difficult: the 1st page is out, so it can't be determined if the advertisement opposite the title page has the border around it. The lower right portion at the foot of the spine was also missing, so the "Co." in Geo. M. Hill Co. is also missing. However, the type is red & serifed as per Green, Hanff variant "C", Blanck state "Y". The losses to the spine have been carefully filled in to provide a perfect match to the adjacent material. Copyright page has the press-printed copyright notice. Page 14 reads ' Low Wail'. Page 81, fourth line from the bottom spells 'pieces' correctly. Page 227 first line spelled: 'While the woodman'. The colophon at the rear of the book is 13 lines, all in black. The dark-blue blots are not present on the moon on the plate facing page 34, and the red shading is not present on the plate facing page 92. All 24 color plates by W.W. Denslow are are present. The book has undergone a full restoration by : Scott K. Kellar Bookbinding and Restoration, Chicago,Illinois. The book has been expertly re sewn, reinforced and restored using archival materials (such as the spine restoration mentioned above). Scott also created an archival custom-made clamshell box with leather spine label for additional protection. I will be glad to provide additional photographs or answer any questions about this book. "James Macdonald (1850-1920) was born in Scotland and trained as a bookbinder. In 1873 he came to the United States and worked with William Matthews, one of America's pre-eminent binders. He left Matthews when he had saved enough money to start his own binding business. The Macdonald bindery, established in 1880, soon became one of the most sought-after binderies in this country. In an interview with the New York Herald in November 1910, James Macdonald acknowledged that hand- binding in the industrial age was a dying art, ' the world is moving away from the art of the book lover. The world is swifter now, but it is not so thorough in many things as it once was. The average man has become used to the product of the machine. Today he knows no other standard. He has lost his touch for half-tones - for the cover of a book has its half-tones.'"After the Club Bindery closed in 1909 "James Macdonald purchased the largest part of the tools" (Thompson). Unaffected by the changing developments of the book and binding industry, the Macdonald bindery produced some of the finest bindings of its time both for themselves and for publishers and bookstores such as: Brentano's, Scribners, E.P. Dutton and Co., Gotham Book Mart and others" (Christie's, April 12, 2000).

Stokes, New York 1900 - FIRST EVER U.S. APPEARANCE of BANNERMAN'S LITTLE BLACK SAMBO in the U.S. in FIRST EDITION / FIRST STATE +++ FIRST PRINTING of 1903/4 SECOND, LARGER EDITION ! ____________________________- 1. FIRST AMERCIAN EDITION / FIRST STATE, 1ST U.S. APPEARANCE of "The STORY Of LITTLE BLACK SAMBO"!! This is the Original Small Format, Dumpy Style, and the VERY FIRST EDITION in FIRST PRINTING/STATE** with Images of SAMBO on BOTH FRONT & REAR COVERS. Per Yuill (p.3), "by 1900 Little Black Sambo had been published in the U.S. by Stokes. who had purchased the rights from Grant Richards. No remuneration went to Bannerman." * Note: There are no dates in these Original American Black Sambo editions, because Helen Bannerman had sold the Publishing rights to Sambo in England to Grant Richards, who promptly proceeded to not give her any royalties when the book took off in sales. So she refused to give her permission, as the author, to any copyright in the U.S. for Richards or Stokes! It was never copyrighted in the States -- thus the numerous Pirated Editions beginning as early as 1905. **According to Barton, The Pictus Orbis Sambo, pages 116-118, the first U.S. edition had the title and author lettering on the covers in pale blue, matching the color of Sambo's pants in the illustrations on the two boards. The second issue (1901) has the title in black as only change. & the third issue (1902/3) has a red cloth spine, as opposed to a tan buckram cloth spine in the first and second issues.** __________________________________ Thus, This TRUE FIRST PRINTING, FIRST STATE BUCKRAM Bound is a SOLID EXAMPLE, Complete in 56 numbered pages (did not include blank reverses in count) with all 27 Color Plates present.         F.g. Tait: A Record, Being His Life, Letters, And Golfing Diary

      J. Nisbet 1900 - With an introduction by Andrew Lang. Frederick Guthrie Tait (1870-1900) was born in Edinburgh, the son of a leading physicist and amateur golfer. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Sedbergh before entering RMA, Sandhurst, where he introduced golf. A very powerful and long hitter, at the R&A, St Andrews, on Jan 11, 1893, he hit the ball 250 yards onto frozen ground stopping 341 yards from the tee, thereby refuting his father's calculation that 190 yards was the maximum possible flight of a ball. Tait won the the Amateur Championship twice (1896, 1898), finished third in the Open Championship twice (1896, 1897) and was leading amateur in the same competition six times. He was also a crack shot and a first-class rugby player. Tait was killed in action at Koodoosbergh during the second Boer War. In a pocket on his dead body was found a letter showing the paw marks of his favourite dog "Nails". All profits from original sales of this book were donated to the Black Watch Widows' and Orphans' Fund. First Edition. 8vo. 304pp. Portrait frontis. (tissue-guard), 16 plates (tissue-guards). Original decorative green cloth, sl soiled, gilt lettering and golfing devices to front cover and spine. This is the variant green cloth edition, as opposed to the red cloth and vellum editions. A good copy. Uncommon.  [D&M, 3460]

        Baum, L. Frank

. New York: Russell, 1900. 4to, x, 190pp, color frontispiece and 15 two-color plates within the pagination. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, a really good copy of a book rarely found in even adequate condition. In a new box. First edition, in the first state binding with pictorial endpapers. This is BaumÕs first book (although Mother Goose In Prose was published first). This title was an obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of ÒAlice In WonderlandÓ; it was late reworked and published as ÒThe Surprising Adventures of the Magical Monarch of MoÓ. Aleph-Bet notes: ÒA notoriously rare Baum fantasy, that when found is usually lacking the frontis.Ó Not in Cotsen, Oppenheimer, Osborne, or Gumuchian. Peter Hanff noted: ÒThe volume has sixteen color inserts, including the title page, as follows: facing the title page, the title page, and facing pages 4, 12, 28, 38, 48, 60, 72, 92, 104, 120, 132, 152, 168, and 186. The plates, though unnumbered, are included in the pagination. Justin Schiller once had a file copy from the publisher that was annotated to indicate that the firm had run short of frontispieces.Ó

[PAIR OF ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWINGS BY CHARLES RUSSELL, SHOWING SCENES OF AN INDIAN HUNTING WITH A RIFLE, AND A GROUP OF INDIANS RIDING HORSES]

[Great Falls, Mt. n.d., ca. 1900].. Each illustration drawn in pencil on the verso of a trade card of the Park Hotel, Great Falls, Montana, each card 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Small stain in upper left corner of horse riding drawing, faint crease in lower left corner of hunting drawing, else fine. In a folding green cloth chemise and green cloth slipcase, spine gilt. An outstanding pair of original pencil drawings by the great western illustrator, Charles Russell. One of the drawings shows a group of three Indian braves riding horses bareback at a high rate of speed. The lead rider is about to take a whip to his horse. The other illustration shows a male Indian holding a rifle and peering around a tree. Whether the brave's prey is animal or human is a question left to the imagination of the viewer. Both of these illustrations are drawn on the verso of trade cards of the Park Hotel of Great Falls, Montana. Charles Russell and his wife moved from Cascade to Great Falls, Montana in 1897. One of Russell's first paying jobs in Great Falls was to draw original illustrations on menus for a special Christmas dinner at the Park Hotel that December. These two sketches are unsigned, but their attribution to Charles M. Russell has been confirmed to us by Patrick Stewart, the former Director of the Amon Carter Museum and a leading Russell scholar. A pair of evocative sketches by one of the greatest western artists.
