Feste Des Lebens Und Der Kunst, Eine Betrachtung Des Theaters Als Hochsten Kultursymbols ( Festival of Life and Art: a Consideration of Theater as the Highes Cultural Symbol

Leipzig: Eugen Diederichs, 1900. Large 8vo, thick gray wrappers with title printed in black, flanked with design of gilt flames rising from urns. Slight stain on back cover else fine. Decorative frontispiece with a pair of caryatids bearing faceted crystals, title page, two borders and initial by Behrens. Printed in pale blue, crimson and brown on cream paper. Dedicated to the Kunstler-Kolonie, an artists' colony at Mathildenhohe near Darmstadt founded by Grand Duke Ludwig of Hesse, which Behrens joined in 1899. He was a pioneer of 20th century architecture, an industrial designer, and in his earlier career a graphic artist and designer of jewelry, porcelain and furniture. This work is a Jugendstil theater manifesto heralding the advent of the new decorative style and its relation to the theater. It is a critique of the naturalist/realist theater style of the 19th century stage and its illustion of a fixed, single point perspective. Behrens believed that a dynamic theater space should overcome the rigid distinction between actor and audience and sublimate art and culture over raw nature. Building on Wagner's notion of the total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk), the new theater was to combine all the arts under a single roof, dominated by beautiful speech and movement, elevating art into life. Aynsley, Graphic Design in Germany, page 61:"(Behrens) gave equal consideration to typographic composition, letter initials and illustrations, as well as paper quality and binding." Harvard, Turn of a Century, 108: "Characteristic of Behrens and the Germans is the geometric control of the design with the repetitive curvilinear forms subordinated to a strict framework.". Printed and Pictorial Wrappers. Fine. Illus. by Peter Behrens. Large 8vo.

        Collected Works of George Eliot

Boston: Dana Estes, circa, 1900. Octavo, 24 volumes, with frontispieces and engraved plates throughout; uniformly bound in contemporary gilt decorated polished calf by Blackwell, with marbled endpapers and top edges gilt, a fine set. Handsome edition of the works of Mary Anne Evans (George Eliot), one of the great novelists of the Victorian era. Renowned for her realism and evocative attention to detail, Evans wrote under the pseudonym of George Eliot to avoid the stigma of romantic flippancy associated with other female writers of the era. By all accounts and astute and intelligent woman, Evans associated with intellectuals such as Robert Owen and Herbert Spencer and undertook difficult translations including philosophical works by Feuerbach and Spinoza. Evans lived a controversial life and openly questioned her Christian upbringing while continuing to attend church on a regular basis. More problematically, she began a long-term open relationship with George Lewes, a married philosopher. Although the relationship challenged Victorian social conventions it did little to dampen her popularity (the pseudonym George Eliot had masked Evan's true identity as a female novelist for only a relatively short time). Her novels were widely enjoyed across class and social boundaries, and Queen Victoria herself was an avid reader. This is the illustrated cabinet edition, with fine engraved plates protected by tissue guards with printed captions. It includes fictional works, poetry and a selection of Evans' critical essays. Shortly before her decease in December 1880 Evans married John Cross, a man twenty years younger than herself. This set includes his posthumous memoir of Evans in three volumes, a work criticised by contemporaries as more a hagiography than a true biography of a complicated and controversial woman. The titles in this set of twenty-four volumes are: Felix Holt, The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch, Adam Bede, Daniel Deronda, Silas Mariner and other stories, Romola, Scenes of Clerical Life, Impressions of Theophrastus Such and Miscellaneous Essays, Poems in two volumes and the abovementioned biography by John Cross.

The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne & A Garden Kalendar

London: S.T. Freemantle, 1900. Two volumes, thick quarto, many plates, illustrations, and textual vignettes, untrimmed, original lettered tissue-guards badly foxed and some spotting; a handsome set in the original stiff vellum boards, gilt-embossed hand-coloured coat-of-arms to front boards of both volumes, spines lettered in gilt, bookplates. A handsome set of this classic of both natural history and English literature - still one of the most readable of the world's great books. The work is richly illustrated by several of the great illustrators of the Edwardian era, including the famous bird-artist John Gerrard Keulemans. First published in 1789, the main book takes the form of a series of letters to the natural historian Thomas Pennant and the antiquary Daines Barrington, giving a remarkable account of the special habits of the animals he observed. The work 'holds a unique position in English literature as the solitary classic of natural history… an invaluable record of the life work of a simple and refined man who succeeded in picturing himself as well as what he saw. The reader is carried along by his interest in the results of far-sighted observation; but, more than this, the reader imbibes the spirit of the writer which pervades the whole book and endears it to like-minded naturalists as a valued companion.' (Cambridge History of English Literature) This two-volume work also includes another of White's most cherished projects, the Naturalist's Kalendar, first published in 1795, two years after the author's death. He described the work as 'somewhat of a Natural History of my native parish, an Annus Historio-Naturalis, comprising a journal for one whole year, and illustrated with large notes and observations.' This is the large-paper edition, limited to 160 copies, of which this is number 14. The work is signed by the editor and artists: Bowdler Sharpe, J.G. Keulemans, Herbert Railton, and Edmund J. Sullivan.

Illustrations of the Botany of Captain Cook's Voyage round the World in H.M.S. Endeavour in 1768-71... With Determinations by James Britten... Part I. Australian Plants [all published]

London: Printed by Order of the Trustees of the British Museum, 1900-, 1905. Three volumes, folio, comprising a section of preliminary text in each volume and a total of 319 (numbered 318) lithographic plates; loose in the original buff paper-covered portfolios, printed labels; dust-soiling and spotting sporadically affecting bindings but generally an excellent set, and in fine condition internally. First printing of the botany of the Endeavour voyage. The first publication of the important botany of Cook's first voyage, gathered together over the names of Banks himself and Daniel Solander who also travelled on the Endeavour voyage, along with the talented botanical artist Sydney Parkinson, who was to die on the voyage. One of just 300 sets produced, this was the milestone publication of Australian botany as first observed by visiting scientists. Parkinson's original botanical drawings from the expedition were made into detailed and accurate paintings under Banks' supervision when the expedition returned to London. Following this they were engraved, and Banks set out to oversee full publication of the collection of engravings. In fact only a proof impression was ever made and the undertaking abandoned. The original copper-engraved plates are held in the British Museum (Natural History) alongside the original drawings and the actual specimens themselves, along with the unique set of the proof impressions made from the copper-engravings. In 1890 publication was again seriously considered, and work began at the end of the century to produce a lithographic printing from the eighteenth century proof impressions of the original engravings. It took five years (and over 800 pounds) to reach the end of the Australian section, at which point the project was closed. This is thus the earliest publication of the botany of the voyage; sixty years later a selection of the engraved plates was superbly printed by the Royal College of Art. In recent years there has also been the massive project of a colour printing from all the original plates, although the evidence of an original intention to print in colour remains slight.

A Monograph of the Genus Casuarius

London: Printed for the Society, 1900. Large quarto, original blue printed front wrapper for Transactions of the Zoological Society bound in, pp. 109-290 (complete); 18 coloured plates depicting cassowaries, 2 maps with hand-coloured hatching, 4 plates of photographic reproductions; an excellent copy in contemporary half morocco, boards rubbed, spine neatly rebacked to match, morocco label. Rothschild's monograph on the cassowary, the first detailed scientific study of the birds, published in December 1900. The fine plates present here are the work of the bird artist John Gerrard Keulemans. Rothschild had a particular interest in the cassowary, the large flightless bird native to the tropical forests of northeastern Australia and New Guinea. One or two species of the cassowary had been recorded in Europe since the early Dutch navigations in the region, but most were not known until the late-nineteenth century. The Australian cassowary, for example, was first seen by settlers when one was killed by Jackey Jackey during the ill-fated Kennedy expedition of 1848, while the first live specimen was not sent to the London Zoo until one was captured by zoologist Edward Pearson Ramsay in 1875. The birds became a passion for Rothschild, who collected sixty-two mounted specimens, and whose interest in the bird was such that he also gathered several live specimens, apparently allowing them to roam the gardens of his estate at Tring. The exquisite plates for Rothschild's publication in 1900 were done by Keulemans, with many drawn from live birds at Tring, and others from live specimens at the Zoological Gardens of Berlin.

[Upper class Ikea]. - The firm of Gillows of Lancaster can be traced back to Robert Gillow (1704-72) in 1730, having served an apprenticeship as a joiner. During the 1730's he began to exploit the lucrative West Indies trade exporting mahogany furniture and importing rum and sugar. Following his death in 1772, the business was continued by his two sons, Richard (1734-1811) and Robert (1745-93). In 1764 a London branch of Gillows was established at 176 Oxford Road, now Oxford Street, by Thomas Gillow and William Taylor. The firm rapidly established a reputation for supplying high quality furniture to the richest families in the country.During the final years of the 19th century the company ran into financial difficulty and from 1897 began a loose financial arrangement with Waring of Liverpool, an arrangement legally ratified by the establishment of Waring and Gillow in 1903. Warings of Liverpool were founded by John Waring, who arrived in the city from Belfast in 1835 and established a wholesale cabinet making business. He was succeeded by his son Samuel James Waring who rapidly expanded the business during the 1880's, furnishing hotels and public buildings throughout Europe. He also founded Waring-White Building Company which built the Liverpool Corn Exchange, Selfridge's department store and the Ritz Hotel.Gillows had established a reputation for the outfitting of luxury yachts and liners, including the Royal Yacht "Victoria and Albert", liners "Lusitania", "Heliopolis" and "Cairo", RMS "Queen Mary" (1934) and "Queen Elizabeth" (1946) for Cunard. During the First World War the Lancaster factory was turned over to war production, making ammunition chests for the Navy and propellers for De Havilland DH9 aircraft and during World War Two produced parts for gliders and the Mosquito aircraft, while kit-bags, tents and camouflage nets were made by the upholstery department. However, the business of the firm began to decline and the Lancaster workshops closed on 31 March 1962. In 1980 Waring and Gillow joined with the cabinet making firm Maple & Co, to become Maple, Waring and Gillow, subsequently part of Allied Maples Group Ltd, which includes Allied Carpets. 4000 gr. Autograph scientific notes on capillarity

      , 1900. 1900.
Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph scientific notes on the kinetic theory of gases. 2ff. [Zurich, summer 1910.] 178 x 124 mm. A few marginal chips and tears, some mended with clear tape, but very good. From the library of historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2008).

The calculations on this sheet appear to be closely related to similar notes that Einstein made in preparation for a lecture course on the kinetic theory of gases that he held at the University of Zurich in the summer semester 1910 (Einstein, Collected Papers, Vol. 4, Doc. 4, pp. 192-195, 238-239).

On the recto, Einstein juxtaposes two expressions for the flow of viscous fluids and gases through pipes. In the upper half of the page, Einstein sketches a derivation of Poiseuille’s law for laminar flow through circular tubes. The mass flow F is proportional to the fourth power of the radius of the tube P, directly proportional to the mass density and the pressure difference , and inversely proportional to the viscosity R. In the bottom half, he sketches a derivation of a similar relation for the case of rarefied gases flowing through very narrow tubes. Here the flow is proportional only to the third power of P, and it is found to be dependent on temperature T. The latter relation was derived and empirically verified by the Danish physicist Martin Knudsen (1871-1949) in a paper of 1909. On the verso, Einstein derives another relation that is due to Knudsen which says that in gases of very low pressure, a difference in temperature causes a difference in pressure; specifically, it is found that the ratio of pressures is proportional to the square root of the ratio of temperatures. This relation was found and investigated by Knudsen in 1910.

Einstein had a long-standing interest in capillarity phenomena, which was the subject of his first two scientific papers, as well as in the kinetic theory of gases and statistical mechanics. He would meet Knudsen in person a year later, in 1911, at the first Solvay Congress in Brussels.

We are grateful to Dr. Tilman Sauer of the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology for providing suggestions about the content of these notes and their apparent place in Einstein’s body of work.
