The Life and Works of Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters

London - Smith, Elder, & Co 1900 - Seven hardbound volumes in green cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and gilt embossed initials to the front boards, with eleven illustrations each in Volumes I-V, eight in Volume VI and seventeen in Volume VII. The Bront sisters, Charlotte (April 21, 1816 March 31, 1855), Emily (July 30, 1818 December 19, 1848) and Anne (January 17, 1820 May 28, 1849), were English writers of the 1840s and 1850s. Their novels caused a sensation when they were first published and were subsequently accepted into the canon of great English literature. The sisters grew up in Haworth, near Keighley in West Yorkshire (the region has come to be known as Bront Country), surviving their mother and two elder sisters into adulthood. Charlotte and Emily had written compulsively from early childhood and were first published, at their own expense, in 1846 as poets under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. The book attracted little attention, selling only two copies. The sisters returned to prose, producing a novel each in the following year. Charlotte's Jane Eyre, Emily's Wuthering Heights and Anne's Agnes Grey were released in 1847 after their long search to secure publishers. The novels attracted great critical attention and steadily became best-sellers, but the sisters' careers were shortened by ill-health. Emily died the following year before she could complete another novel, and Anne published her second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, in 1848, a year before her death. Upon publication Jane Eyre received the most critical and commercial success of all the Bront works, continuing to this day. Charlotte's Shirley appeared in 1849 and was followed by Villette in 1853. Her first novel, The Professor, was published posthumously in 1857. The first biography of Charlotte was written by her friend Elizabeth Gaskell and published in 1857. It helped create the myth of a doomed family living in romantic solitude. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810 1865), often referred to simply as Mrs. Gaskell, was an English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She is perhaps best known for her biography of Charlotte Bront. Condition: The bindings are generally tight and firm with all covers and pages attached, although some of the inner hinges are slightly strained. There is some mild wear to the extremities including slight bumping to the corners and tops and tails of the spines, minor rubbing and marks to the boards. Internally the pages are clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and isolated spot. Overall the volumes are in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Collected Works of Pierre Loti

Paris - Calmann-Levy 1900 - A collection of the works of Pierre Loti, including 'Les Desenchantees', 'Matelot', 'Le Roman d'un Spahi', 'La Galilee', 'Le Livre de la Piete et de la Mort', 'Ramuntcho', 'L'Inde (sans les Anglais)', 'Journal Intime 1878-1881', 'Au Maroc', 'Fleurs d'Ennui', 'Jerusalem', 'Turquie Agonisante', 'Le Mariage de Loti', and 'Les Derniers Jours de Pekin'. Pierre Loti (pseudonym of Julien Viaud; 14 January 1850 10 June 1923) was a French novelist, naval officer and member of the Academie Francaise. He began writing when, in 1876 fellow naval officers persuaded him to turn passages in his diary dealing with some curious experiences at Istanbul into a novel. He proceeded to the South Seas as part of his naval training, and several years after leaving Tahiti published the Polynesian idyll originally named Rarahu (1880), which was reprinted as Le Mariage de Loti; this was followed by Le Roman d'un spahi (1881), a record of the melancholy adventures of a soldier in Senegal. In 1882, Loti issued a collection of four shorter pieces, three stories and a travel piece, under the general title of Fleurs d'ennui. In 1890 he published Au Maroc, the record of a journey to Fez in company with a French embassy, and Le Roman d'un enfant, a somewhat fictionalized recollection of Loti's childhood that would greatly influence Marcel Proust. A collection of strangely confidential and sentimental reminiscences, called Le Livre de la piti et de la mort, was published in 1891. Includes a frontispiece to 'Les Desenchantees' and publishers advertisments to each. Includes fourteen volumes, each complete in their own right. In French. Condition: In half morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Some marks to the boards and spine and some rubbing or wear to the corners of the boards. Internally, firmly bound, generally bright and clean throughout with spotting to the first and last pages. Overall Condition: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Old Times Re-visited in the Borough and Parish of Lymington, Hants. Second Edition

Simpkin Marshall Hamilton Kent & Co 1900 - Roy. 8vo., Second and Best Edition, with portrait frontispiece, title in red and black, and 21 plates (one double-page); original buckram gilt, gilt back, bevelled edges, uncut, covers lightly age-marked else a very good, internally spotless copy. King's work, first published in 1879, immediately established itself as the standard popular reference on the ancient New Forest town; local interest generated the inevitable additions and corrections, but the planned second edition, incorporating the numerous addenda, was deferred by the author's death. This best edition, compiled and published by the author's son from his father's meticulous notes, benefits from much new material and many fresh illustrations. This copy was formerly in the library of Professor [Sir] J H Biles, the eminent naval architect [of 'Titanic' Enquiry fame], and bears his elegant blind-embossed art nouveau bookplate (with press-mark in manuscript) on front paste-down. John Harvard Biles (1854-1933) was apprenticed at Portsmouth Dockyard, studied at the Royal School of Naval Architecture and joined the Admiralty in 1877. His talents were quickly recognised and in 1880 (at the age of only 26) he was appointed chief designer to the major shipbuilder J&G Thomson on Clydebank where he created the revolutionary designs for the 'City of Paris' and 'City of New York'. In 1883 he left to join the foundling consultancy established by Sir Edward Reed, where he quickly became a driving force (the consultancy continues to the present day as Sir J H Biles & Co.). In 1891 he was awarded the Chair of Naval Architecture at Glasgow University (then perhaps the most prestigious such appointment in the world) where he devoted himself to teaching and consultancy on a world-wide scale. IN VIEW OF HIS EMINENCE IN THE FIELD OF SHIP DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, PROFESSOR BILES WAS AN ASSESSOR IN THE ENQUIRY INTO THE LOSS OF RMS 'TITANIC' AND SUBSEQUENTLY HE SERVED ON THE BOARD OF TRADE ENQUIRY INTO LIFEBOATS AND LIFE-SAVING APPLIANCES WHICH AROSE AS A RESULT OF THE TITANIC LOSS. For his services to the 'Titanic' Enquiry and naval architecture in general, Biles was knighted in 1913 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Strength of Gideon and other Stories

Dodd, Mead & Co, New York 1900 - 362 pages with plates including frontispiece. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5") issued in brown cloth with prictorial front cover and spine, lettering in gilt. 1st edition. Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio to parents who had escaped from slavery; his father was a veteran of the American Civil War, having served in the 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and the 5th Massachusetts Colored Cavalry Regiment. His parents instilled in him a love of learning and history. He was a student at an all-white high school, Dayton Central High School, and he participated actively as a student. During high school, he was both the editor of the school newspaper and class president, as well as the president of the school literary society. Dunbar had also started the first African-American newsletter in Dayton. He wrote his first poem at age 6 and gave his first public recital at age 9. Dunbar's first published work came in a newspaper put out by his high school friends Wilbur and Orville Wright, who owned a printing plant. The Wright Brothers later invested in the Dayton Tattler, a newspaper aimed at the black community, edited and published by Dunbar. His first collection of poetry, Oak and Ivy, was published in 1892 and attracted the attention of James Whitcomb Riley, the popular "Hoosier Poet". Both Riley and Dunbar wrote poems in both standard English and dialect. His second book, Majors and Minors (1895) brought him national fame and the patronage of William Dean Howells, the novelist and critic and editor of Harper's Weekly. After Howells' praise, his first two books were combined as Lyrics of Lowly Life and Dunbar started on a career of international literary fame. He moved to Washington, D.C., in the LeDroit Park neighborhood. While in Washington, he attended Howard University. His wife Alice Dunbar Nelson was a famous poet as well. A graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans, her most famous works include a short story entitled "Violets". She and her husband also wrote books of poetry as companion pieces. An account of their love, life and marriage was depicted in a play by Kathleen McGhee-Anderson titled Oak and Ivy. He kept a lifelong friendship with the Wrights, and was also associated with Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington. Brand Whitlock was also described as a close friend. He was honored with a ceremonial sword by President Theodore Roosevelt. He wrote a dozen books of poetry, four books of short stories, five novels, and a play. He also wrote lyrics for In Dahomey - the first musical written and performed entirely by African-Americans to appear on Broadway in 1903; the musical comedy played successfully toured England and America over a period of four years - one of the more successful theatrical productions of its time. His essays and poems were published widely in the leading journals of the day. His work appeared in Harper's Weekly, the Saturday Evening Post, the Denver Post, Current Literature and a number of other publications. During his life, considerable emphasis was laid on the fact that Dunbar was of pure black descent, with no white ancestors ever. Dunbar's work is known for its colorful language and use of dialect, and a conversational tone, with a brilliant rhetorical structure. Dunbar traveled to England in 1897 to recite his works on the London literary circuit. He met the brilliant young black composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor who some of his poems to music and who was influenced by Dunbar to use African and American Negro songs and tunes in future compositions. After his return, Dunbar took a job at the Library of Congress in Washington. In 1900, Dunbar was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and moved to Colorado with his wife on the advice of his doctors. Dunbar died at age thirty-three on February 9, 1906 from tuberculosis, and was interred in the Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio. Card: 6 9 / 16"x 4 1 / 4" Image: 5 5 / 16" X 3 11 / 16". Original Photograph: Col. S B Steele. Ca. 1900 Pretoria, South Africa. Boer War. Second in command, Lord Strathcona Horse.Major General Sir Samuel Benfield Steele, CB, KCMG, MVO (January 5, 1851 – January 30, 1919) was a famous member of the North West Mounted Police. He joined the local militia as a teenager and fought against the Fenians at the Battle of Ridgeway. He was sent west first to fight the Red River Rebellion of Louis Riel, but arrived after the Métis had surrendered. Steele had long been fascinated by the west, devouring the works of James Fenimore Cooper in his youth. He was especially interested in the First Nations, and spent his time in the west learning from them and the Metis. However he was recalled from Manitoba and based in Fort Henry in Kingston for the next few years. He was chosen to be one of the first members of the NWMP, being only the third officer sworn in. In 1873 he returned to Fort Garry with the new force and was put in charge of drilling the new recruits. Over the next few years he crisscrossed the prairies, before being assigned to NWMP headquarters to train new recruits. In 1881 he was assigned to meet with Sitting Bull, who fresh from defeating General Custer had moved into Canada and was demanding land for his people. Steele and a few officers met them and reached a peaceful agreement. This action won Steele great acclaim in the newspapers of the United States and was the beginning of his role as a public figure. In the North-West Rebellion Steele was dispatched with a small force. Missing the Battle of Batoche Steele and his force were sent to move against the last rebel force lead by Chief Big Bear. Steele and his two dozen Mounties defeated Big Bear's force at Loon Lake in the last battle ever fought on Canadian territory. The contributions of the NWMP to putting down the rebellion went largely ignored and unrewarded, to Steele's great annoyance. Steele spent the next ten years assigned to Fort McLeod, and at age 41 married Maria Harwood, eventually the couple had three children. In 1898 he was sent north to the Yukon to succeed Charles Constantine with policing during the Klondike Gold Rush. Initially, he was in charge of the customs posts at the Chilkoot Pass and White Pass, where he created the rule that no one would be allowed to enter without a ton of goods. Steele and his force made the Klondike Gold Rush into one of the most orderly events of its kind in history and made the police force famous around the world, which ensured its survival at a critical time when the force's dissolution was being debated in parliament. In 1900 he was second in command in Lord Strathcona's Horse, a Canadian light cavalry unit sent to South Africa during the Boer war and did so with distinction. Steele, however, disliked greatly what he was ordered to do by the British, which included burning towns and moving the populace to concentration camps.Steele was knighted in 1918 and was made a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, and Member of the Royal Victorian Order.Canada's fifth tallest mountain, Mount Steele, is named after him..
