The Strength of Gideon and other Stories

Dodd, Mead & Co, New York 1900 - 362 pages with plates including frontispiece. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5") issued in brown cloth with prictorial front cover and spine, lettering in gilt. 1st edition. Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio to parents who had escaped from slavery; his father was a veteran of the American Civil War, having served in the 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and the 5th Massachusetts Colored Cavalry Regiment. His parents instilled in him a love of learning and history. He was a student at an all-white high school, Dayton Central High School, and he participated actively as a student. During high school, he was both the editor of the school newspaper and class president, as well as the president of the school literary society. Dunbar had also started the first African-American newsletter in Dayton. He wrote his first poem at age 6 and gave his first public recital at age 9. Dunbar's first published work came in a newspaper put out by his high school friends Wilbur and Orville Wright, who owned a printing plant. The Wright Brothers later invested in the Dayton Tattler, a newspaper aimed at the black community, edited and published by Dunbar. His first collection of poetry, Oak and Ivy, was published in 1892 and attracted the attention of James Whitcomb Riley, the popular "Hoosier Poet". Both Riley and Dunbar wrote poems in both standard English and dialect. His second book, Majors and Minors (1895) brought him national fame and the patronage of William Dean Howells, the novelist and critic and editor of Harper's Weekly. After Howells' praise, his first two books were combined as Lyrics of Lowly Life and Dunbar started on a career of international literary fame. He moved to Washington, D.C., in the LeDroit Park neighborhood. While in Washington, he attended Howard University. His wife Alice Dunbar Nelson was a famous poet as well. A graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans, her most famous works include a short story entitled "Violets". She and her husband also wrote books of poetry as companion pieces. An account of their love, life and marriage was depicted in a play by Kathleen McGhee-Anderson titled Oak and Ivy. He kept a lifelong friendship with the Wrights, and was also associated with Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington. Brand Whitlock was also described as a close friend. He was honored with a ceremonial sword by President Theodore Roosevelt. He wrote a dozen books of poetry, four books of short stories, five novels, and a play. He also wrote lyrics for In Dahomey - the first musical written and performed entirely by African-Americans to appear on Broadway in 1903; the musical comedy played successfully toured England and America over a period of four years - one of the more successful theatrical productions of its time. His essays and poems were published widely in the leading journals of the day. His work appeared in Harper's Weekly, the Saturday Evening Post, the Denver Post, Current Literature and a number of other publications. During his life, considerable emphasis was laid on the fact that Dunbar was of pure black descent, with no white ancestors ever. Dunbar's work is known for its colorful language and use of dialect, and a conversational tone, with a brilliant rhetorical structure. Dunbar traveled to England in 1897 to recite his works on the London literary circuit. He met the brilliant young black composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor who some of his poems to music and who was influenced by Dunbar to use African and American Negro songs and tunes in future compositions. After his return, Dunbar took a job at the Library of Congress in Washington. In 1900, Dunbar was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and moved to Colorado with his wife on the advice of his doctors. Dunbar died at age thirty-three on February 9, 1906 from tuberculosis, and was interred in the Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio. Card: 6 9 / 16"x 4 1 / 4" Image: 5 5 / 16" X 3 11 / 16". Original Photograph: Col. S B Steele. Ca. 1900 Pretoria, South Africa. Boer War. Second in command, Lord Strathcona Horse.Major General Sir Samuel Benfield Steele, CB, KCMG, MVO (January 5, 1851 – January 30, 1919) was a famous member of the North West Mounted Police. He joined the local militia as a teenager and fought against the Fenians at the Battle of Ridgeway. He was sent west first to fight the Red River Rebellion of Louis Riel, but arrived after the Métis had surrendered. Steele had long been fascinated by the west, devouring the works of James Fenimore Cooper in his youth. He was especially interested in the First Nations, and spent his time in the west learning from them and the Metis. However he was recalled from Manitoba and based in Fort Henry in Kingston for the next few years. He was chosen to be one of the first members of the NWMP, being only the third officer sworn in. In 1873 he returned to Fort Garry with the new force and was put in charge of drilling the new recruits. Over the next few years he crisscrossed the prairies, before being assigned to NWMP headquarters to train new recruits. In 1881 he was assigned to meet with Sitting Bull, who fresh from defeating General Custer had moved into Canada and was demanding land for his people. Steele and a few officers met them and reached a peaceful agreement. This action won Steele great acclaim in the newspapers of the United States and was the beginning of his role as a public figure. In the North-West Rebellion Steele was dispatched with a small force. Missing the Battle of Batoche Steele and his force were sent to move against the last rebel force lead by Chief Big Bear. Steele and his two dozen Mounties defeated Big Bear's force at Loon Lake in the last battle ever fought on Canadian territory. The contributions of the NWMP to putting down the rebellion went largely ignored and unrewarded, to Steele's great annoyance. Steele spent the next ten years assigned to Fort McLeod, and at age 41 married Maria Harwood, eventually the couple had three children. In 1898 he was sent north to the Yukon to succeed Charles Constantine with policing during the Klondike Gold Rush. Initially, he was in charge of the customs posts at the Chilkoot Pass and White Pass, where he created the rule that no one would be allowed to enter without a ton of goods. Steele and his force made the Klondike Gold Rush into one of the most orderly events of its kind in history and made the police force famous around the world, which ensured its survival at a critical time when the force's dissolution was being debated in parliament. In 1900 he was second in command in Lord Strathcona's Horse, a Canadian light cavalry unit sent to South Africa during the Boer war and did so with distinction. Steele, however, disliked greatly what he was ordered to do by the British, which included burning towns and moving the populace to concentration camps.Steele was knighted in 1918 and was made a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, and Member of the Royal Victorian Order.Canada's fifth tallest mountain, Mount Steele, is named after him..

Manuscript diary of an eleven year old boy, about half of which concerns life in Pittsburgh, Pa

v.p., Pittsburgh, et al, november 17, 1898 - october 22, 1900 - Oscar travels with his family from Fremantle, Australia to England, where they remain for some months, before departing from Southampton for America. The diary begins abroard the German mail ship P.R. Lutpold, bound for England, with stops at Aden, Port Said, Naples, Genoa, and London. It is unclear why the family leaves Australia, where they had lived in Sydney and Perth, but it is likely in connection to Oscar's father's business. Upon arriving in America the Knights spend some time in Hoboken, before eventually settling in Pittsburgh. Young Oscar seems a polite, well- behaved boy, foud of doing his sums and attending Sunday school and he often worries about his mother's health. He does indulge in the occasional boyish pursuit, attending films and circuses, playing baseball, and shooting his home-made slingshot with his brother Eric (DIARY) 2 vols., 4to. Approx 300 pages, pen-and-ink on ruled paper in two blank diaries. Inscribed on front pastedown, "Oscar Knight. 117 Ferme Park Rd, Hornsey, 9/1/99" and with "O.L.M. Knight" ink stamp throughout. First volume bound in quarter cloth and marbled boards, second volume bound in quarter morocco and marbled boards, with spine perished. Provenance: G. & N.         Original Art: Jewish Couple in Psychiatrist's Waiting Room

Original art. Acrylic on canvas backed with board. Framed to approximately 29.5" x 23.5". Signed "X. Cugat" lower right. A couple of wrinkles on the canvas, else fine. A satirical painting of a Jewish husband sitting in the waiting room of a psychiatrist, with his wife, who is dressed like a nun. Cugat probably had as much to do with bringing a Latin flavor to American music as any other musician. Born in 1900 in Spain, he emigrated with his family to Cuba when he was five. Trained as a violinist, he moved to New York as a teenager to take advantage of the short-lived tango craze. When it inevitably ended, he employed his talents as an artist to work as a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times and eventually had his cartoons syndicated by King Features. As sound began to be used in movies, he assembled another tango band that had some success. He took his band to New York where it became the resident band for the new Waldorf Astoria. A notorious womanizer, he had four wives and always put attractive women in his groups. He gave Rita Hayworth one of her first jobs, and his third wife was blonde bombshell and singer Abbe Lane. In the mid-1960s, he took another blonde as a wife, who became the famous "cuchi-cuchi girl" Charo. His brother, Francis Cugat, also harbored an artistic bent, and was the artist who created the striking dust jacket art for F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Shipping extra. .

Signed personal photograph of Arthur Conan Doyle in South Africa during the Boer War.

South Africa: Not published, 1900/01 - Photograph (77 × 82 mm). Inscribed on the verso. Minor crease to photograph not affecting the main image. Excellent condition. A privately-taken and uncirculated inscribed photograph of Arthur Conan Doyle in South Africa, where he served as a senior physician during the Boer War. This privately-taken photograph depicts Doyle standing waist-deep in a large hole, surrounded by detritus. The inscription on the verso of the image reads, "Xmas wishes. Pulling out of a hole in South Africa – like the British Empire. A Conan Doyle". Doyle was intensely patriotic, and wrote two best-selling books based on his experiences during the conflict, The Great Boer War (1900) and War in South Africa: its Cause and Conduct (1902). "The latter, translated into many foreign languages and braille, became the major international advocate of the British case in the controversial war, and bowing to his mother's insistence a somewhat reluctant Conan Doyle accepted a knighthood for it in 1902" (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
