        London to Ladysmith via Pretoria

Longmans, Green, and Co., London 1900 - This is Churchill's fourth book and the first of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. This one relates the exciting story of his capture by the Boers and the subsequent daring escape that made him a celebrity. The first edition is a beautiful book, but notoriously fragile and prone to wear, soiling, and spotting. This first edition, first printing copy is not fine, but is far better than most copies we see. Spine presentation is the distinguishing feature of this copy; the spine cloth is unusually clean and both the gilt and red lettering remaining bright and clearly legible and with only minor wrinkling at the spine ends. The pictorial front cover shows only light soiling at the edges. The blank rear cover is lightly soiled and stained, but shows only minimal wear at the corners. The contents are bright and clean with virtually no internal spotting and no previous owner inscriptions. Spotting is confined to the text block edges. The original black endpapers are intact. Maps and plans are present, clean, and crisp. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.1.a, Woods/ICS A4(a.1), Langworth p.53. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Ball-Players Career: Being the Personal Experiences and Reminiscences of Adrian C. Anson, Late Captain of the Chicago Baseball Club

Chicago: Era Publishing. 1900. First. First edition, first issue binding with spine lettering 3/16" tall. Illustrated with photographs. Light and neat contemporary gift inscription, tiny pinhead sized rub spot on the spine, a little modest soiling, and the front hinge neatly repaired, a nice, very good plus copy of "Cap" Anson's autobiography, a book that appears infrequently. This is a much nicer copy than the three others that have appeared at auction in the past quarter century. Anson was perhaps the greatest player of the Nineteenth Century, and this is a keystone title for any early baseball collection. .

EARLY 20th-CENTURY PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM, CONSISTING OF TWENTY-FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN IN VLADIVOSTOK CIRCA JUNE 1900, EACH WITH CONTEMPORARY HANDWRITTEN ANNOTATIONS IN GERMAN.

[Vladivostok. ]. 1900 - Twenty-four photographs (3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches each), each print matted on heavy paper of commercial photograph album. Early 20th-century German photograph album with textured paper boards and spine. Front board decoratively embossed with image of a flower and the words, "Moderne Lichtbildere." Top and bottom of spine, edges of boards, and outer joints moderately worn. Mounts separating, but very good. Images very clean overall and in very good condition. An album of twenty-four original photographs taken in Vladivostok in June 1900. The snapshot- size images are each matted one per page in a German-made photograph album, and each image is inscribed in a contemporary hand in German. The photographs include views of the port, Russian naval ships and numerous other vessels, the city center, the post office, street scenes, buildings and houses (including a German brewery), and pictures of everyday life. Due to its location in the Russian Far East on the coast of the Sea of Japan and near both the Chinese and Korean borders, Vladivostok was a settlement with numerous international residents and visitors, and this heterogeneity is recorded in this album. Half of the photographs are of people, including images of Russians, Chinese, and Koreans. Photographs of local Chinese residents predominate, with images of a waterman filling his wagon, a fruit seller in the market, another seller in the market with his measuring scale, and other laborers. Other images in the album include Korean children playing, various neighborhoods and locales, and a family portrait (complete with cow) in front of a house. A fine turn-of-the- century album consisting of original contemporary photographs of Vladivostok, with numerous images of the local population. Due to its strategic location, Soviet Russia later kept the port under the highest security, and any photographs of it are uncommon.

The son of the wolf: tales of the far north

Houghton Mifflin, Boston 1900 - frontis by Maynard Dixon inserted, [i-viii] [1] 251p., printer's imprint [252] blank leaf, very good blackish green cloth with silver buckled belt and corners, silver on spine somewhat worn, first edition, printing of 2028 copies according to Sisson/Martens pages 2 &116 and BAL 11869 and Woodbridge. Publisher's imprint at bottom of spine first state with no periods around ampersand : Houghton | Mifflin & Co.; no broken type on page 147 (perfect "e" in spruce and perfect "t" in might) no broken type on 64-67, commas before and after 1900 on copyright page, sets of binding threads between 6/7, 18/19 and every six leaves thereafter. Two neat previous owners' book plates on front endpapers. This copy matches all first printing, first state points with the following two discrepancies from Sisson: 1. the frontispiece has the caption "Malemute Kid Halted Him" (page 64) as opposed to "The Men of the Forty Mile" as stated in Sisson; 2. The frontispiece appears to be inserted rather than sewn-in although Swann's auctioned described first printing with frontis tipped-in stating later printings were sewn-in, a disagreement with Sisson. Also, to this bibliographer the color of the binding is in question as well. Appears to be a blackish-green but could be interpreted as a deep gray-green. All-in-all a very nice copy of the author's rare first book [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The full vellum binding with leather ties has been decorated with gold heightened floral ornaments and title with nice capital and letters in mediaeval style. The binding has been signed by "I.
