Album of 89 original pen and ink drawings, probably used as the illustrations to captioned cartoons, all but a few signed in lower margins, the album lettered "Jllusztrációk 1890-1900 Cserépy 1"

Budapest, 1890-1900 - Pasted on the first page of this intriguing album is the cover of a 1900 art exhibition and the page listing this artist, his Budapest address, and the number of his exhibition entry. The drawings are carefully and competently executed, and are mostly of middle-class urban situations, generally involving two individuals in conversation, the settings suggesting that these are drawings for cartoons: smug waiter to irate diner, stage-door johnny to actress, street-vendor to prospect, petitioner to official, etc. Over 35 of the drawings show figures with unflattering, stereotyped anti-Semitic Jewish features, as was unfortunately not uncommon at that time in Europe and elsewhere. A fascinating glimpse of Hungarian turn-of-the-century life, and prejudice The drawings average about 7 x 5 inches; the album is 11-1/2 x 9 inches. . Original 3/4 calf, black cloth sides, spine perished, covers worn, a few minor tears without loss to the album's pages not affecting the mounted drawings, which are in fine condition [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Autograph scientific notes on capillarity

1900 - Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph scientific notes on the kinetic theory of gases. 2ff. [Zurich, summer 1910.] 178 x 124 mm. A few marginal chips and tears, some mended with clear tape, but very good. From the library of historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2008).The calculations on this sheet appear to be closely related to similar notes that Einstein made in preparation for a lecture course on the kinetic theory of gases that he held at the University of Zurich in the summer semester 1910 (Einstein, Collected Papers, Vol. 4, Doc. 4, pp. 192-195, 238-239). On the recto, Einstein juxtaposes two expressions for the flow of viscous fluids and gases through pipes. In the upper half of the page, Einstein sketches a derivation of Poiseuille’s law for laminar flow through circular tubes. The mass flow F is proportional to the fourth power of the radius of the tube P, directly proportional to the mass density and the pressure difference , and inversely proportional to the viscosity R. In the bottom half, he sketches a derivation of a similar relation for the case of rarefied gases flowing through very narrow tubes. Here the flow is proportional only to the third power of P, and it is found to be dependent on temperature T. The latter relation was derived and empirically verified by the Danish physicist Martin Knudsen (1871-1949) in a paper of 1909. On the verso, Einstein derives another relation that is due to Knudsen which says that in gases of very low pressure, a difference in temperature causes a difference in pressure; specifically, it is found that the ratio of pressures is proportional to the square root of the ratio of temperatures. This relation was found and investigated by Knudsen in 1910. Einstein had a long-standing interest in capillarity phenomena, which was the subject of his first two scientific papers, as well as in the kinetic theory of gases and statistical mechanics. He would meet Knudsen in person a year later, in 1911, at the first Solvay Congress in Brussels. We are grateful to Dr. Tilman Sauer of the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology for providing suggestions about the content of these notes and their apparent place in Einstein’s body of work. $60000

The Life and Works of Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters

London - Smith, Elder, & Co 1900 - Seven hardbound volumes in green cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and gilt embossed initials to the front boards, with eleven illustrations each in Volumes I-V, eight in Volume VI and seventeen in Volume VII. The Bront sisters, Charlotte (April 21, 1816 March 31, 1855), Emily (July 30, 1818 December 19, 1848) and Anne (January 17, 1820 May 28, 1849), were English writers of the 1840s and 1850s. Their novels caused a sensation when they were first published and were subsequently accepted into the canon of great English literature. The sisters grew up in Haworth, near Keighley in West Yorkshire (the region has come to be known as Bront Country), surviving their mother and two elder sisters into adulthood. Charlotte and Emily had written compulsively from early childhood and were first published, at their own expense, in 1846 as poets under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. The book attracted little attention, selling only two copies. The sisters returned to prose, producing a novel each in the following year. Charlotte's Jane Eyre, Emily's Wuthering Heights and Anne's Agnes Grey were released in 1847 after their long search to secure publishers. The novels attracted great critical attention and steadily became best-sellers, but the sisters' careers were shortened by ill-health. Emily died the following year before she could complete another novel, and Anne published her second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, in 1848, a year before her death. Upon publication Jane Eyre received the most critical and commercial success of all the Bront works, continuing to this day. Charlotte's Shirley appeared in 1849 and was followed by Villette in 1853. Her first novel, The Professor, was published posthumously in 1857. The first biography of Charlotte was written by her friend Elizabeth Gaskell and published in 1857. It helped create the myth of a doomed family living in romantic solitude. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810 1865), often referred to simply as Mrs. Gaskell, was an English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She is perhaps best known for her biography of Charlotte Bront. Condition: The bindings are generally tight and firm with all covers and pages attached, although some of the inner hinges are slightly strained. There is some mild wear to the extremities including slight bumping to the corners and tops and tails of the spines, minor rubbing and marks to the boards. Internally the pages are clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and isolated spot. Overall the volumes are in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Collected Works of Pierre Loti

Paris - Calmann-Levy 1900 - A collection of the works of Pierre Loti, including 'Les Desenchantees', 'Matelot', 'Le Roman d'un Spahi', 'La Galilee', 'Le Livre de la Piete et de la Mort', 'Ramuntcho', 'L'Inde (sans les Anglais)', 'Journal Intime 1878-1881', 'Au Maroc', 'Fleurs d'Ennui', 'Jerusalem', 'Turquie Agonisante', 'Le Mariage de Loti', and 'Les Derniers Jours de Pekin'. Pierre Loti (pseudonym of Julien Viaud; 14 January 1850 10 June 1923) was a French novelist, naval officer and member of the Academie Francaise. He began writing when, in 1876 fellow naval officers persuaded him to turn passages in his diary dealing with some curious experiences at Istanbul into a novel. He proceeded to the South Seas as part of his naval training, and several years after leaving Tahiti published the Polynesian idyll originally named Rarahu (1880), which was reprinted as Le Mariage de Loti; this was followed by Le Roman d'un spahi (1881), a record of the melancholy adventures of a soldier in Senegal. In 1882, Loti issued a collection of four shorter pieces, three stories and a travel piece, under the general title of Fleurs d'ennui. In 1890 he published Au Maroc, the record of a journey to Fez in company with a French embassy, and Le Roman d'un enfant, a somewhat fictionalized recollection of Loti's childhood that would greatly influence Marcel Proust. A collection of strangely confidential and sentimental reminiscences, called Le Livre de la piti et de la mort, was published in 1891. Includes a frontispiece to 'Les Desenchantees' and publishers advertisments to each. Includes fourteen volumes, each complete in their own right. In French. Condition: In half morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Some marks to the boards and spine and some rubbing or wear to the corners of the boards. Internally, firmly bound, generally bright and clean throughout with spotting to the first and last pages. Overall Condition: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
