This is a fine work concerning a sojourn in the Sikkim Himalayas and was written to describe a journey among new and interesting surroundings, undertaken in 1891 just after a fresh awakening on the part of the Indian Government to the political importance of Sikhim. Then, as now Chinese diplomacy checked any extended influence and friendly intercourse was set back by the Lamas of Lhasa. Even in this time, Donaldson experienced Chinese difficulties and remarks about the disruption of movement between Hindustan and Tibet. She worries and comments about the destruction of the Lepcha Land peoples whom she thinks will die out. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        OF GARDENS

London: Especially written out and illuminated by F. Sangorski & G. Sutcliffe, 1900. n. Hardcover. Phoebe Boyle's Copy of aGlittering Alberto Sangorski Manuscript on Vellum. 248 x 178 mm (9 3/4 x 7"). 2 p.l. (half title followed by a blank), 18, [2] pp. Excellent gilt-decorated dark green crushed morocco (which the Boyle catalogue attributes to Sangorski & Sutcliffe), covers with frame of multiple gilt rules enclosing stylized cornerpiece fans and, at center, a large almond-shaped ornament formed by gilt strapwork and with leafy embellishment and tangent circles containing small crosses on a stippled ground, flat spine with vertical titling and floral tools, RED CRUSHED MOROCCO DOUBLURES featuring a frame of multiple gilt rules and, at the middle, a complex gilt wheel ornament, red watered silk endleaves. In a (repaired) velvet-lined slipcase. EIGHT LARGE AND EXQUISITE ILLUMINATED INITIALS IN SEVERAL COLORS AND BURNISHED GOLD, two with long marginal extensions, THREE ESPECIALLY FINE, BRIGHT OVAL VIGNETTES (approximately 90 mm. across) SHOWING LOVELY GARDENS, one of these at the front as part of A MAGNIFICENT DOUBLE-PAGE OPENING FEATURING A PROFUSION OF PINK AND YELLOW ROSES with a green parakeet perched among them (on the left) AND GRAPEVINES BEARING SUCCULENT PURPLE FRUIT (on the right) being eyed hungrily by a long-tailed bird, BOTH ON A BRUSHED GOLD BACKGROUND within a burnished gold border, the left page serving as a title page, with "Of Gardens, An Essay By Francis Bacon" in letters of raised burnished gold, the opening initial of the title in blue and white on a burnished gold ground and enclosing a tessellated design in burnished gold and colors, the right page beginning with the word "God" in burnished gold, the text's ENORMOUS OPENING INITIAL "G" (60 mm. tall) in blue decorated with pink and green flowers, the center of the initial filled with curling blue and brown acanthus leaves above which dangles a bunch of grapes, the whole on a burnished gold ground. Front flyleaf with engraved bookplate of Phoebe A. D. Boyle; verso of front free endleaf with engraved bookplate of John Achelis. Barely perceptible rubbing to joints (well masked by refurbishment), but A VERY FINE COPY, the pretty binding scarcely worn, the vellum creamy and bright, the paint vivid, and the gold shimmering. This is a very appealing illuminated manuscript of Bacon's prescription for the ideal princely garden, adorned with lush decoration befitting the topic. It was executed at the height of the period when Alberto Sangorski was producing such fine work for Sangorski & Sutcliffe, before he left the firm in 1912 to join Riviere. One of the reasons for his departure can be seen in the colophon, which states that "This copy of Bacon's Essay "Of Gardens" has been especially written out, and illuminated by F. Sangorski & G. Sutcliffe." Alberto quite reasonably wished to take credit for his own work rather than giving it to his borther's firm; Riviere was happy to allow him to do so. The quality of the painting here is particularly rich and delicate, with much fine detail, and the miniatures and borders can only be described as luscious. This lovely item was in the outstanding collection of fine bindings, illuminated manuscripts, vellum printings, and other private press books owned by Phoebe Boyle and sold at Anderson Galleries in 1923 (Lot 18). Sangorski's manuscripts are usually in elaborate, often jewelled, bindings which add considerably to their price; This specimen, in its relatively simple (though elegant) binding, offers a rare chance to acquire a Sangorski manuscript for a more modest price.

Undated but circa 1900 - The painting measures 340 x 260 mms., the frame, 462 x 378. The painting was then given a brush coat of MS2A cyclohexanone resin varnish. Losses were filled and then retouched with gouache base coats, followed by glazes of pure ground pigment in MS2A resin. The painting was given a final spray coat of MS2A resin varnish and photographed after treatment. It was refitted into its frame using brass strips. Losses on the frame were retouched with gouache, with the exception of small chip on the top of the frame.

Two Posters for The Brand of a Thief by Ramsay Morris

Chicago: National Printing & Engraving. [circa 1900]. Each approximately 27" x 41" with a contemporary 20" x 7" banner pinned to the lower edges. Folded with a few scattered tears to the extremities and at some of the folds, very good or better. The poster for a lost play from actor and dramatist Frank Ramsay Morris. He wrote several books, among them The Ninety and Nine, which was made into a silent film in 1922. Two remarkably bright and fresh images: one, a beautiful woman turning her back on a distraught young man, who is likely the "thief" of the title; and the other, a dramatic scene of the same man trapped in a burning building (no doubt on account of his transgressions) with lurid copy below: "This is the End! It is Death! And Such a Death!" No mention of the play found online or in OCLC. Rare. A beautiful pair of early theatre posters. .

Original Portrait Col. Sam Steele. Samuel Benfield Steele 1851 - 1919. In North-West Mounted Police Blue Patrol Jacket 1900

Ottawa, Canada: Topley 1900. (Photograph) Very good. Original Photograph mounted on studio card: 7 5 / 8" X 5 3 / 8" Image: 5 1 / 2" X 3 7 / 8". Original Portrait Col. Sam Steele. Samuel Benfield Steele 1851 - 1919 Handwritten on reverse by Harwood Steele, Son of Sam Steele: Supt. S. B. Steele. Blue Patrol Jacket, N. W. M. P. 1900 Photographer: Topley, Ottawa. Neg # 79273. Major General Sir Samuel Benfield Steele, CB, KCMG, MVO (January 5, 1851 – January 30, 1919) was a famous member of the North West Mounted Police. He joined the local militia as a teenager and fought against the Fenians at the Battle of Ridgeway. He was sent west first to fight the Red River Rebellion of Louis Riel, but arrived after the Métis had surrendered. Steele had long been fascinated by the west, devouring the works of James Fenimore Cooper in his youth. He was especially interested in the First Nations, and spent his time in the west learning from them and the Metis. However he was recalled from Manitoba and based in Fort Henry in Kingston for the next few years. He was chosen to be one of the first members of the NWMP, being only the third officer sworn in. In 1873 he returned to Fort Garry with the new force and was put in charge of drilling the new recruits. Over the next few years he crisscrossed the prairies, before being assigned to NWMP headquarters to train new recruits. In 1881 he was assigned to meet with Sitting Bull, who fresh from defeating General Custer had moved into Canada and was demanding land for his people. Steele and a few officers met them and reached a peaceful agreement. This action won Steele great acclaim in the newspapers of the United States and was the beginning of his role as a public figure. In the North-West Rebellion Steele was dispatched with a small force. Missing the Battle of Batoche Steele and his force were sent to move against the last rebel force lead by Chief Big Bear. Steele and his two dozen Mounties defeated Big Bear's force at Loon Lake in the last battle ever fought on Canadian territory. The contributions of the NWMP to putting down the rebellion went largely ignored and unrewarded, to Steele's great annoyance. Steele spent the next ten years assigned to Fort McLeod, and at age 41 married Maria Harwood, eventually the couple had three children. In 1898 he was sent north to the Yukon to succeed Charles Constantine with policing during the Klondike Gold Rush. Initially, he was in charge of the customs posts at the Chilkoot Pass and White Pass, where he created the rule that no one would be allowed to enter without a ton of goods. Steele and his force made the Klondike Gold Rush into one of the most orderly events of its kind in history and made the police force famous around the world, which ensured its survival at a critical time when the force's dissolution was being debated in parliament. In 1900 he was second in command in Lord Strathcona's Horse, a Canadian light cavalry unit sent to South Africa during the Boer war and did so with distinction. Steele, however, disliked greatly what he was ordered to do by the British, which included burning towns and moving the populace to concentration camps.Steele was knighted in 1918 and was made a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, and Member of the Royal Victorian Order.Canada's fifth tallest mountain, Mount Steele, is named after him..

They proclaimed the fundamental concord of the tenets of the early Church as preserved in the non-Roman churches with the religious aspirations, the intellectual climate and the social and economic morality of the twentieth century; and innumerable reprints and translations broadcast this message of liberal Protestantism all over the world. Harnack [1851-1930] (ennobled in 1914) won internation fame as the leading student of the early Church...[His] influence upon the intellectual life of Germany was enormous. He was a co-founder and for many years the president of the Evangelic-Social Congress (1890) which brought together theologians, politicians and economists interested in the problems of social welfare...As director-general of the Prussian state library (1905-21) he initiated the work of the union catalogue of the German libraries as well as the international ëCatalogue of Incunabulaí (Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke)î (Printing and the Mind of Man).Printing and the Mind of Man 390.HBS 65351.$3,000

Nawa Entomological Factory. A collection of eleven post-cards mounted with actual wings of butterflies.

. Gifu, The Nawa Entomological Factory, ca. 1900. Postcards measuring 9 x 15 cm. Each card contained in the original envelope. The envelopes have a handwritten number and the word "Real Butterfly" in a neat old hand. The cards themselves have a printed species name; on the verso is the printer's address and an artistic butterfly and plant logo. * A very rare and curious item. At the beginning of the 20th century, Mr. Y. Nawa patented a method "by which the scaled patterns of butterflies and moths can be removed on to various articles, such as paper". The pressed specimens of butterflies were prepared by a patented procedure, to prevent them from decay. Whatever the secret of the patent was, it worked perfectly. Even a century later, the specimens still look fresh. The combination of actual wings and hand-painted bodies gives the postcards a somewhat surrealistic feel. Each card shows a different species of butterfly or moth, with hand-painted bodies on which are mounted actual wings taken from a caught specimen. Species depicted are: Ixias pyrene, Huphima nama, Danais agleioides, Danais vulgaris, Cyrestis thyodamas, Heboima glaueippi, Papilo annaeus Fruhs (2x),Fresis iphita Cram, Danais septemtrionis, Junonia lemonias. We found no reference in the handbooks to these postcards, but the Nawa Entomological Factory published a booklet in 1909, entitled "Pressed Specimens of Butterflies and Moths", which explains a bit more about the factory and its merchandise..

        London to Ladysmith via Pretoria

Longmans, Green, and Co., London 1900 - This is Churchill's fourth book and the first of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. This one relates the exciting story of his capture by the Boers and the subsequent daring escape that made him a celebrity. The first edition is a beautiful book, but notoriously fragile and prone to wear, soiling, and spotting. This first edition, first printing copy is not fine, but is far better than most copies we see. Spine presentation is the distinguishing feature of this copy; the spine cloth is unusually clean and both the gilt and red lettering remaining bright and clearly legible and with only minor wrinkling at the spine ends. The pictorial front cover shows only light soiling at the edges. The blank rear cover is lightly soiled and stained, but shows only minimal wear at the corners. The contents are bright and clean with virtually no internal spotting and no previous owner inscriptions. Spotting is confined to the text block edges. The original black endpapers are intact. Maps and plans are present, clean, and crisp. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.1.a, Woods/ICS A4(a.1), Langworth p.53. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
