        Southern Arabia. Soudan and Socotra

London: Smith, Elder & Co.,, 1900. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spine, device in blind to the upper board. Photogravure portrait frontispiece and 25 half-tone plates, 6 coloured maps, 5 of them folding. Spine a little sunned, pale toning, a scatter of foxing to the fore-edge, else an unusually well-preserved copy. First edition, later issue. Uncommon, particularly so in such sharp condition. Bent and his wife surveyed in the Arabian peninsula extensively between 1893 and his death in 1897, adding "much to European knowledge of the Hadhramaut country, the mountainous area backing the Gulf of Aden … In November 1896 he traversed Socotra and explored the little-known country within 50 miles of Aden. His last journey was through parts of southern Arabia in 1897" (ODNB). This account of those last explorations - divided into sections on Southern Arabia, Muscat, the Hadhramaut, Dhorat and the Gara Mountains, the Eastern Soudan, the Mahri Island of Sokotra, Beled Fadhli and Beled Yafei. - was edited by his wife, "herself an intrepid traveller", and is much enhanced by "her important and early photographs".

NY 1900 - Hand-pulled photogravure. Image size 6 15/16 x 3 15/16 inches. Printed on copper plate paper and tipped to art paper which is 15 x 11 inches. Archivally matted. Fine. A richly-toned photogravure, Plate 17, from the portfolio, AMERICAN PICTORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY, SERIES TWO, which was published for "Camera Notes" by the Publication Committee of the Camera Club, New York in 1900. This image was also reproduced in Alfred Stieglitz's CAMERA NOTES in 1901. Limited to 150 copies. Harriette Candace Clark (also known as Rose; 1852-1942) was a painter, poet, writer and photographer. She and Elizabeth Flint Wade, who was an editor for Harper's Weekly, operated as a team. Wade printed Clark's negatives; they also were awarded the gold medal at and exhibition in 1902 where the American Section of the exhibition was selected by Alfred Stieglitz. Clark wrote on technical matters in photography for the American Amateur Photographer when Stieglitz was the editor. She had a solo exhibit of her photography as early as 1899 at The Camera Club. Sadakichi Hartmann wrote "The most successful portrait work (next to Steichen's, of course) is furnished by Rose Clark. She must be a close student of painting, all her work, without losing its individuality, is reminiscent of grand examples of pictorial art."

[Photo Album]: New Jersey Family Album including Transportation

Bloomfield, New Jersey, Queens, New York. 1900-1960. Oblong quarto. String-tied brown flexible leather with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front cover measuring 10.5" x 12". Very good minus with tears, loose pages, and lacking some photos. A collection of 159 photographs taken by New Jersey photographer H.J. Rosenkranz of his family, and friends, among other things, from the turn of the century until around 1960, mostly uncaptioned. The assembled photos range from landscape shots of rural New Jersey and the surrounding area, people posing on benches, in their house, and outside in various locations. Pictured are photos of a biplane in flight, an elaborate double-decker bus with a spiral staircase, and horse drawn carts full of straw baled by farmers. The album also contains beautiful large shots of train yards and locomotives. There are also some professional family portraits, weddings photos and new baby. Laid in is a Rosenkranz's business card as well as a prayer card for Frieda Rosenkranz, though it is unclear whether she was a wife or daughter. Some of the later images are in color including a trip to Washington DC, complete with cherry blossoms, and one of a man posing on his land and a older woman by a gravesite. A nice assortment of vernacular images from a minor professional photographer from New Jersey capturing 60 years of his history.. .

Complete Writings (22-volume autographed edition, with limited biography included)

Houghton, Mifflin and Co 1900 - This is a very good set of the 22-volume set in their original cream cloth bindings. Volume 1 has been signed by the publisher and by Hawthorne's daughter, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop. Additionally, each frontis was signed in pencil by the illustrator, including such big names as Childe Hassam and Howard Pyle. West Clinedinst and Ross Turner, F.C. Yohn, Eric Pape, Jules Guerin, Frederick McCormick, Mary Ayer, E.C. Peixtto, Harry Fenn, Frank T. Merrill. The books are in very good condition, with very minor soiling to the covers, iight wear to the spine labels and an owner's bookplate on the inside of each front cover that has left a bit of an imprint on each front end page.         Writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne : Mosses from an Old Manse (Vols 4 & 5) Tales and Sketches (Vol 16) [Ltd Ed]

Houghton Mifflin; Boston; 1900; 8vo (8 3/4" X 5 3/4"); 345, 360, 358 pages - VG+/None. First and only autographed editions of this grouping of 3 volumes from Mifflin's 22 volume autographed set limited to 500 numbered sets, this set being number 159. Publishers original smooth white woven cloth with paper label on spine with author's name, title and 'autographed edition' printed in black inside box borders printed in red. Each volume in the set contains a Photogravure frontispiece, vignette title, and additional B&W plates, all on India paper mounted, with the frontispiece in each volume signed by the artist. Both Vols 4 & 5 are signed by Smith, while Vol 16 is signed by FC Yohn with unsigned Smith plate on page 294. Descriptive tissue guards for all illustrations, and a printed limitation page behind the half title of each volume indicating this to be copy #159 of the set. This family authorized set of Hawthorne's was issued by Houghton Mifflin in 1900 in 3 versions - an 'autographed' set limited to 500 copies, a 'large paper' set limited to 500 copies, and an 'Old Manse' smaller sized trade edition. The autographed edition is by far the most desireable because it was signed not only by Hawthorne's daughter Rose Hawthorne Lathrop (in Volume 1), but each of the 22 volumes has their frontispiece hand signed in pencil by the artist. In all, 21 different artist's signatures are to be found in this veritable treasure trove of golden age illustrators and artists that include Childe Hassam, Howard Pyle, Jessie Willcox Smith, Edmund Garrett, Anna Whelan Betts, Sarah Stillwell, Eric Pape, E C Peixotto, Alice Barber Stephens (the only artist with signed frontispieces in 2 volumes), and numerous others. Leatherbound sets of the autographed edition can be found on the internet priced from $3,500 to $12,500, making it financially difficult for the collector of any individual artist to secure a copy of their scarce autograph. The 3 volumes offered here are the first 3 volumes in the Hawthorne set. They have been grouped together because they represent a logical combination that contains the autographed or non-autographed work of a significant group of Howard Pyle students (often referred to as Brandywine artists). The frontispiece to vol 4 is believed to be the only limited edition volume ever signed by Jessie Willcox Smith, as is are the Mary Ayers (vol 5) and F.C. Yohn (vol 16) signatures. In addition, illustrations by other artists including Frank B. Masters, Bertha Rockwell, Marion Peabody, Helen Kibbey, C.S. Chapman and others also appear in these 3 volumes. This set has been so grouped that one need to have to acquire any other of the remaining 19 volumes to have all of Smith's and Yohn's full contribution to the set. While the large paper limited edition is the same size as this set, it must be considered much the less desireable because it lacks the scarce artists' signatures.Volumes 4 and 5 also form a logical grouping since they comprise parts I and 2 of Hawthorne's longer and much appreciated work 'Mosses from an Old Manse'. The frontispiece in vol 4 is boldly signed in pencil by Jessie Willcox Smith, vol 5 is signed by Mary Ayer, and vol 16 is signed by F.C.Yohn. Volume 16 is included here because it contains the one other illustration which Jessie Willcox Smith contributed for this 22 volume work. It should also be noted that for some reason the pages after 354 in volume 5 are missing - whether this occurred at the publisher or they were torn out is not known. While this in no way harms the collectability of the illustrations and autographs, a facsimile of the remaining 6 pages of text will be provided the purchaser if they so desire.Truly a scarce and highly collectible group of Howard Pyle student signatures and illustrations.</p [Attributes: Hard Cover]
