An Outpost of Progress" [in] The Ladysmith Treasury. Edited by J. Eveleigh Nash

London: Sands & Company, 1900 - 8vo, original pictorial green cloth, gilt lettering, t.e.g. Conrad's story "An Outpost of Progress," which first appeared in Cosmopolis magazine in 1897 and was collected in Tales of Unrest (1898), is included here in an anthology published to raise funds for the besieged citizens of the town of Ladysmith, South Africa, a contribution Conrad make along with 15 other authors (F. Anstey, W.E. Norris, Edgar Fawcett and Eden Phillpotts among them) without fee. The profits from the book went to the Mayor of Ladysmith, a town which was under siege by the Boers and not freed until early 1900. This is Conrad's first appearance in an anthology, and it is one of his scarcest works of this kind. Binding a little worn and soiled; some light foxing; very good copy.         An original watercolour painting - possibly of a sparsely settled Adelaide seaside suburb - unsigned, but the artist is identified on the verso as H.P. Gill

The watercolour is on paper (135 x 227 mm), unmounted as produced; apart from a tiny light crease to one top corner, it is in fine condition. It is undated, but probably circa 1900. Harry Pelling Gill (1855-1916), art curator and teacher, was born in England; he trained and taught at the Royal College of Art from 1877-82. He was then appointed master of the school of design in Adelaide. 'He arrived in Adelaide in September and organized elementary and advanced classes, instruction in crafts, teaching of drawing and correspondence lessons. He also gave instruction to trainee teachers.... In 1889 Gill became director for technical art ... He published books on geometrical drawing and design ... In 1892 he was appointed honorary curator of the art gallery and, following the resignation in December of Louis Tannert as master of the school of painting, Gill assumed control of all the board's art teaching activities.... Gill had shown promise as an artist and hoped to win repute in Australia. However, teaching and administration had left little time for his painting. His rare decorative and aesthetic compositions, and also his landscapes, are painted with meticulous detail without sacrificing the overall unified effect. This is a quality passed on to some of his students, including the Hambidge sisters and Gustave Barnes in his early work. Gill's landscapes and some of his interiors show that he was interested in the accurate rendering of light - a rare quality in Adelaide before 1900' (Australian Dictionary of Biography). This charming painting - of coastal tea tree (or similar) flourishing prominently against a backdrop of a few substantial dwellings scattered along a line in the relatively featureless landscape - certainly satisfies these criteria.

        Los Caprichos.]

[Madrid: Calgografia der Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, between 1881 and 1900] - Folio (353 x 244 mm). Twentieth-century brown straight-grained skiver, title gilt directly to the spine, low bands, foliate devices to the compartments, two gilt panels to the boards, marbled endpapers. Brown cloth slipcase. b Bookplate (designed by Reynolds Stone) of Jonathan and Phillida Gili. A little rubbed at the extremities, varying degrees of general foxing (a little heavier in places but largely confined to the margins), a very good copy. 80 etched and aquatint plates printed in sepia on thick paper. This copy is of either the fifth or sixth edition, the bevelled plates measuring 353 x 244 mm and printed on thick wove paper. For all editions from the fourth (1878) through to the twelfth (1937) the plates were bevelled. The following editions can be dismissed: the plates of the fourth measure only 310 x 230 mm; the seventh was printed in blue ink; the eighth on "very fine, thin, smooth, wove paper"; the plates of the ninth measure only 345 x 240 mm; the tenth, eleventh and twelfth were printed on either laid paper or varieties of japon. Fifth: printed on "thick, absorbent, wove paper" in three sizes: 365 x 260 mm., an issue which is smaller than ours (330 x 240 mm.) and a "deluxe edition" measuring 425 x 300 mm. "Sepia or very rich sepia and black inks The edition was limited to 210" (Harris). Sixth: printed on "strong, absorbent, wove paper" in two sizes: 340 x 240 mm. ("ordinary edition") and 395 x 270 mm. ("deluxe edition"). "Dark umber ink The edition was limited to 230" (Harris). It seems most likely that our copy was trimmed down by the binder from either the fifth edition with sheets sized 365 x 260 mm. or the sixth deluxe edition. (It is possible that it is one of the fifth deluxe edition printings but this would mean rather drastic trimming.) Identifying the exact edition is problematic. Various pencillings on the endpapers of this copy show that previous owners have speculated as to this being either the fifth or sixth edition. A note in a contemporary Spanish hand on a leaf preceding the plates explains that these prints were taken from the plates held at the National School of Graphic Arts in Madrid. What we can be certain is that this is a copy dating from the late nineteenth century, printed in dark umber inks on good wove paper with generous margins and utilizing the original plates – most likely from the sixth deluxe edition, which Harris describes as "slightly better than the fifth; the impressions are more brilliant". "Los Caprichos, which are the earliest of Goya's large series of engravings and were published by Goya himself in 1799, have enjoyed greater popularity than the later and more moving series of Los Desastres de la Guerra. This may partly be because the Desastres were first published posthumously in 1863, by which time the Caprichos had already gained fame, but a more basic reason is probably that the subjects of the Caprichos invite imaginative interpretations which those of the Desastres do not admit, and their satire is easier to enjoy than the horrific war and famine scenes of the later series" (Harris I p. 95). "Los Caprichos, or The Caprices are a bizarre, absorbing and sometimes disturbing series of eighty etchings and aquatints depicting a wide variety of subjects including the clergy, prostitutes and witches. The images are a blend of two techniques: etching and aquatint. In particular Goya's use of the aquatint process, lending the images stark contrast between dark and light, provides a distinctly mysterious and dark quality to the work. The title, Los Caprichos, suggests invention and fantasy. Variants of the word 'Caprice' have been used by many artists from classical antiquity right through to the humanist renaissance in Fifteenth Century Italy. Goya's use of the term is a nod to the followers of this tradition: Botticelli and Dürer and the later Tiepolo and Piranesi. It denotes the promotion of the artist's imagination over reality; invention over mere representation. Howe

        Sailing Alone Around the World

New York: The Century Company, 1900. First edition of "the finest single-handed adventure story yet written" (Seafarer). Octavo, original blue cloth. Pictorially stamped in silver and green, top edge gilt. Illustrated by Thomas Fogarty and George Varian. In near fine condition with a light rubbing to the extremities, contemporary name to the front free endpaper. A very nice example. Sailing Alone Around the World was published by Century Company in 1900. The sailing memoir records Slocum's amusing experience as the first person to sail around the world alone. National Fisherman called it "[a] literary gem, adroitly and engagingly written," but interest extends beyond mere sea-aficionados. Excitement for the voyage was universal, and Slocum was awaited by admirers at his ports. To these he gave popular lectures and lantern-slide shows upon his arrival, including the English writers Edwin Arnold and Arthur Ransome. The memoir was first published in installments before its popularity became such that it was issued in lavishly illustrated book form. Slocum conveys an appreciably casual, almost self-deprecating, style. Contemporary reviews speak as well of it even now as "one of the most readable books in the whole library of adventure" (Sports Illustrated). "There is so much to this book that it is not surprising that it is has been continually in print since 1889..this book has literary merit, thoughtful and beautifully written and packed with incident" (Nautical Magazine).

        Original-Öldruck: \"Dame der Gesellschaft mit Kind\"

Um 1900. Original-Öldruck (Leinendruck). Öl auf Leinwand, Format: 55 x 68 cm (Rahmenmaß: 69 x 81 cm). Signiert: F. Lenbach. Datiert: 1898. N.P. Privately printed, 1900. large folio. publisher's half brown morocco with cloth-covered boards, spine gilt, top edge gilt. (ii), 32, (2) pages, 5 plates. First edition, one of a few copies printed by Vaughan's son in memory of his father (St Bride Catalogue p.921). This copy is inscribed by Vaughan on the front free end paper. W.E. Vaughan 1825 - ca. 1900) was a Brighton print dealer, the largest dealer south of London in the last half of the 19th century. His reminiscences deal with his business and the aesthetic aspects of hand-coloured prints. The five prints are excellent chromolithographs of famous 18th century prints. Levis, page 185-186, states that "this volume is quite rare. I have never seen but one copy." On page 32 is listed an obituary notice that appeared in The Times: "Collectors of coloured prints will hear with regret of the death of Mr. W.E. Vaughan, the well-known print dealer of Brighton, which occurred last week. There are few connoisseurs who have not added to their stores from his large and curious stock, and his pleasant room has been visited by most of the notables of the reign. Descended from a good old Welsh family, Mr. Vaughan had yet to fight his way up from a humble station. A gilder by trade, he early followed the bent of his taste for Bartolozzi's work, and every penny he could spare was spent on the master of stipple. At that time Vaughan had few competitors, and it was not until late years that he startled the sale-rooms by giving what was then the unheard-of price of £70 for a coloured engraving of 'Miss Farren.' He lived to have bid more than double that sum for similar prints. Mr. Vaughan's judgement was so good than in any disputed point his opinion was frequently accepted as conclusive by the presiding powers at the London sale-rooms, and as his character was as high as his eye was correct, purchasers of his stock always got good value for their money. Quick in sympathy, of gracious manner, and with a mind stored with an extroardinary variety of knowledge, Mr. Vaughan will be long remembered and regretted by all lovers of the subject to which he devoted his uncommon taste and high integrity." Boobplate on front pastedown. Minor rubbing along edges.

The Death of Moses. An Oratorio in three parts [For solo voices, 4-part mixed chorus, and piano.]

Back wrapper has tear. First three leaves far from pristine. Book broke into two sections. Marcus Hast was a London cantor and composer. He was born at Warsaw in 1840. In 1864 he went to Germany to study music, and on his arrival at Breslau was appointed cantor at the chief Orthodox synagogue. While at Breslau he gave instruction to many cantors who became prominent, including Rosenthal (Berlin), Birnbaum (Königsberg), Grützhändler (Warsaw), Goldberg, and Ziegelroth. In 1871 he was chosen to succeed Simon Ascher as chief cantor of the Great Synagogue, London. Hast published a large number of transcriptions of Hebrew melodies as well as many original compositions, achieving marked success with his numerous synagogal "pièces d'occasion," most of them for chorus and orchestra. Among his published works are: "The Divine Service" (1873); "Bostanai," a dramatic sacred cantata (1876); "Azariah," an oratorio, produced at Glasgow (1883); the work offered here, "The Death of Moses," performed at Queen's Hall, London (1897); "The Fall of Jerusalem" (1901); the Seventy-second Psalm; "Victoria," a cantata.         Fleurs des champs

s.d. (circa 1900), 26,8x59cm, une feuille. s.d. (circa 1900), 26,8x59cm, une feuille. - Lithograph laminated on cardboard. About 1900. It is part of a series of four symbolic female representations, called Flowers , which includes Flowers of the Mountain, Flowers of the Fields, Flowers of Water and Flowers of Greenhouse . Signed lower right in the stone. According to watercolors exhibited at the Salon des Artistes from 1893 to 1941. Elisabeth Sonrel, born in 1874 in Tours, studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of the painter Jules Lefebvre. An artist with Symbolist affinities, she draws her inspiration from Renaissance painting, notably in the style of Botticelli for this series as well as for the series Seasons . Realized in a typically Art Nouveau style, the Flowers are part of a trend inherited from the pre-Raphaelites of the second half of the 19th century, who like to represent the woman against a backdrop of luxuriant vegetation. The curved lines that frame the representation blend in with the abundant floral decoration, and the silhouette, an allegory dressed in the antique style, is detached from a rural landscape surrounded by daisies, blueberries, gold buttons and yarrow. This type of lithographic series ( Flowers, Seasons) played a decisive role in the spread of Art Nouveau, and the graphic arts of that contemporary were declined in posters, almanacs and newspapers.

Autograph Letter Signed, "Jph. Conrad," to Doubleday, McClure and Co representative James MacArthur

"The Pent" [Stanford near Hythe], 1900. 4 pages. 12mo. Old folds, minor toning. 4 pages. 12mo. ON LORD JIM, AGAINST AUTHOR PHOTOS, AND BEGINNING "TYPHOON" A terrific, unpublished Conrad letter, being a reply to James MacArthur, the London representative of the American publisher of Lord Jim, expressing ambivalence about that novel; making clear his distaste for author photographs; and mentioning that he's begun work on "Typhoon." In part: "I am glad you think well of Jim from samples. I am in such a state of muddle about it myself that I have given up thinking. Moreover what's done can not be undone. As to your request you must really pardon me. I haven't a photograph-and-a photograph anyhow is a beastly thing even if I had one. If the public wants a photograph let them have it of course but I should think any sort of photograph would do. I have no objection but I won't have anything to do with it. I really think too much of my prose to throw photographs into the scale in which public favours are weighed. Indeed I have not forgotten the pledge; I keep that pleasure before me. I've just started a short story (a real one this time-not an incipient novel) and when I've murdered that I shall appear and claim the lunch...." The first American edition of Lord Jim was published October 31 by Doubleday, McClure and Company, though its serialization in Blackwood's was not complete until November. The American edition did not include a photograph of the author. The "short story" Conrad refers to would have been the novella "Typhoon," which he began in mid-September and finished in January 1901, though which did not begin to appear in Blackwood's until the following year (Najdez p 306 & p 311). Scottish born James MacArthur (1866-1909) founded and co-edited the New York magazine Bookman from 1894-1899, for which he had favorably reviewed Conrad's first novel, Almayer's Folly, in 1895. His tenure with Doubleday was brief; in London as the publisher's representative in 1900, MacArthur returned to the U.S. in 1901 and took a position with Harper's, on behalf of which he would later correspond with and solicit material from Conrad.

Original pencil drawing, heightened with ink (mixed). Signature stamp of the artist's signature in the lower right corner of the work, and signature stamp of the workshop at the back. This drawing is part of a series of ten studies for Bertin to 1920-1925. Very nice condition. Provenance: the artist's studio, referenced to catalog Atelier Louis Anquetin (Thierry de Maigret, 28/11/08). Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant-garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. With Émile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893, Louis Anquetin continues to explore new opportunities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, after a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias pictorial that will line the general art movement, and take away from his friends. Dazzled by the baroque art and its creative force, so he thinks his childhood friends were involved in a pathway leading to the death of painting. He believes in a "perfect painting" which is embodied in the re-remember the lessons of Michelangelo and Rubens among others. His work becomes more conventional, he advocated a return to business by offering to reflect on the a priori conditions of any possible form of art in accordance with the rules of perspective and anatomy, as practiced by the masters the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Leaving only a few works that can be described as monumental, Anquetin turns prolific with its many studies and sketches, who considered that the design was "a very powerful means of expression" compulsory foundation of all arts plastics. Working voluntarily countdown of his time, Louis Anquetin made possible the existence of an original modern figuration. By his obstinacy and his passion for painting, he has indeed prevented is completely closed the way to the great Western tradition. You can admire his works in many prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay or the Louvre in Paris, San Francisco and Detroit, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery and the Tate London, etc.. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         The Baths of Caracalla - Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1900.

Alma-Tadema zelf zei over dit werk: ?It does seem to me that The Baths of Caracalla does show the different sides of my art, does exhibit its best qualities at their best... The picture, like much of my recent work, is a picture of ancient Rome as it was, and for this work of reconstruction I have had to get my information mainly from archaeological drawings. I was occupied with the picture for two years, and when it came back to my studio from the Academy I found that it wanted some altering and I worked at it again for some time with help of pencil drawings and models.?De kollossale zuil in de voorstelling moet gezien worden als een symbool van onvergankelijkheid, uittorenend boven de zorgeloze fratsen van de badende figuren.Inspiratie voor de voorstelling haalde Alma-Tadema vermoedelijk uit een gedicht van Alfred Lord Tennyson: ?A Court, compact of lucid marbles, bossed with the lengths of classic frieze, with ample awnings gay, betwixt the pillars and great urns of flowers, the muses and graces, grouped in threes.Prijs: ?4.150,- (incl. lijst).

        Chinoiseries / Costumes d'Antan

(France / China 1900 - Octavo. (22)pp. Album of Chinese landscapes in original watercolors, facing depictions of women's antique costumes painted on silk, interleaved with tissue. "Chinoiserie" refers to European art characterized by imagery of a romanticized China, a notion that similarly underpins the genre of costume books, which presented foreign fashion through a European lens. It appears that the brightly-colored landscapes in this album were done later than the silk paintings, most likely by a Western artist. Included are market scenes, depictions of boats on a river, and pagodas. These European stylings contrast with the depictions of Chinese fashion opposite them, bringing a stark juxtaposition of East and West not often seen in costume books. The delicate paintings of costumes on silk are done in a much more traditional Chinese style. Great attention is paid to details, such as the knotted red and green silk cords worn around the women's waists, floral hair ornaments, and the subtle patterns of their loose-sleeved robes. One woman carries a basket of flowers, another poses beside a deer, and one is dressed as a warrior with a sword, in a jacket and loose trousers, tying on her knee guards. The costumes are colored in soft shades of blue, pink, and green. Very fine in soft gilt-titled white calf with raised bands on the spine, blind-tooled with decorative rules. Housed in a flannel-lined box. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to American Polynesian ethnologist and diplomat William Churchill, and his wife Llewella, on the front free endpaper: "To Genl and Mrs Churchill in kind recollection of our meeting in Samoa 1896 and again New York this April 5th 1900. Joshua Slocum." A fascinating association copy for this "classic account of a small boat voyage" (Toy): William Churchill (1859-1920) was appointed American consul general to Samoa in 1896, in which capacity he hosted Slocum when he made landfall there on 16 July 1896, a meeting Slocum records in this book: "There was a lady's hand in things about the consulate at Samoa. Mrs Churchill picked the crew for the general's boat, and saw to it that they wore a smart uniform and that they could sing the Samoan boatsong, which in the first week Mrs Churchill herself could sing like a native girl" (p. 154). Churchill was a brilliant scholar, and was acknowledged as the foremost authority on Polynesian culture by local chiefs and foreign missionaries alike, but was widely considered an ineffective administrator, and was recalled in the lead-up to the Second Samoan Civil War (1898-9) as his reports were considered overly sympathetic to tribal concerns. Churchill suffered a nervous breakdown as a result, but during his recuperation wrote his most famous work, Polynesian Wanderings (1912), which analysed the languages of the Polynesian peoples and demonstrated that they had originated in Indonesia. Morris & Howland, p. 126 *; Toy 462; Theroux, William Churchill: A Fractured Life, The Hawaiian Journal of History, vol. 29 (1995). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
