The Indians of To-Day, Illustrated with Full-Page Portraits of Living Indians

Chicago: Herbert S. Stone and Company, 1900. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Folio. pp [8], 185, with index, 55 plates from photographs by Rinehart. Original pictorial cloth, top edge gilt. Very slight bumping to lower corners, mild foxing to front endpapers, else fine. A native of New York, Grinnell had a deep interest in the life and culture of the Plains Indians, and made summer trips from the East to reservations, where he recorded Native American history and culture. "In 1895 President Grover Cleveland, aware of Grinnell's knowledge of Native American customs, had sent him as a special commissioner to help obtain a treaty with the Blackfoot and Fort Belknap Indians. Later, as President Roosevelt's personal emissary, he negotiated a land controversy on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota" (ANB). According to the Preface, this work was inspired by a visit to the Indian Congress held in Omaha in 1898 in conjunction with the Trans-Mississippi International Exposition, which stimulated among its white attendees "a desire to know more about [the Indians], their past and their present, and the outlook for their future." In response to this interest, he offers chapters on history, folklore, and customs, as well as life on the reservations and the character and role of Indian agents.

Autograph Manuscript Signed of his poem "Custer"

N.p. [New York], n.d. [1900?] - When news of Little Big Horn spread, one of the first of many poems to appear was Edmund Clarence Stedman's "Custer", in the CHICAGO TRIBUNE of July 16, 1876. That version of Stedman's poem was among the first to give voice to the myth of the lion-maned young warrior who was cut down savagely by a "wolvish foe"; and that version was a much longer poem that this brief, 10-line elegy, no doubt written much later by a poet better informed by the truth. Now there is no blood-thirsty, savage foe -- but Custer's "deathless spirit" still manages to mount to the stars 8vo. Fair copy, one page, on a single sheet of personal letterhead. Slight toning at lower margin

An early, rare, and very visual Harry Houdini "challenge" broadside

"Broadside, ""IMPORTANT. NOTICE. I offer $100.00 to any human being living that can escape from all the cuffs I carry, and from which I release myself ... (no place, c. 1900) 8.5"" x 11"". Light toning with two tape marks at center of top margin not affecting text, a few areas with slight ink bleed, marginal tears and partial folds expertly repaired on verso, else very good. An early broadside printed soon after vaudeville impresario Martin Beck discovered Houdini in 1899 and gave him his first big break. Billed as ""The Expert Handcuff Manipulator,"" Houdini also offered a ""$50.00 REWARD ... to any on that can escape form the Bean giant, but that offer is for the cuffs to be fastened behind the back."" The ""Bean Giant"" handcuffs were a favorite of Houdini's. He used them to challenge rival escape artists, even offering them the key, while of course understanding that the configuration of the keyhole would make it impossible for one to reach. The broadside is one of the earliest and most visual of its kind that we can locate and may be unique in its survival. This an early incarnation of what would become a common form of advertisement for Houdini's performances, challenging anyone, amateur or professional, to recreate his famous escapes. "

        The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

George M. Hill, Chicago 1900 - Needs rebinding. First Edition, State B. Main faults: The text block is detached from the binding; lacks the illustrated frontpaper, lacks 2 of the 24 color plates, being the plates at pages 138 and 150; 4 of the color plates are detached, 3 having edge chipping, but not affecting the color illustration. There was some light pencil scribbling on the backs of 5 blank pages, of which 4 erased very nicely just leaving a few unobtrusive scratches, but one blank page shows slight traces of pencil. The book has a somewhat musty aroma from being stored in a box in a garage. The covers and the spine are well attached, wityh a little fraying to the top and bottom edges of the spine. The coloring on the spine is very rubbed, with faded lettering. There is an early owner's inscription on the frontpaper, and a 2 inch closed tear to the bottom of the title page. Edition points: Page (2) doesn't have the surrounding box; page 14 first line "low wail of"; Page 8, fourth line from bottom "pieces"; Pages 110 and 186 have imperfect type towards the bottom lines; page 227 first line "While the woodman"; the last page is pasted onto the back cover; The title page is dated 1900 with an 1899 copyright date; the illustration at page 92 has the red shading on the horizon. The pages and the illustrations are mostly very clean, with some thumbing. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Titlepage and second page with minor folding signs. Wonderful and rare publication ! Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (11 March 1868 ?- 16 January 1940), known as Lolly, was born at 23 Fitzroy Road, London. She was the daughter of the Irish artist John Butler Yeats and sister of W. B., Jack and Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats. She trained and worked as an art teacher and was a member of William Morris's circle in London before her family returned to Dublin in 1900. Yeats wrote and created the artwork for "Elementary Brush-Work Studies" (published in 1900), an educational book that teaches young children the technique of painting flowers and plants using her simple method. At the suggestion of Emery Walker, who worked with Morris on the Kelmscott Press, Yeats studied printing with the Women's Printing Society in London. In Dublin, she accepted the invitation to join Evelyn Gleeson to form the Dun Emer Guild along with Lily, who was an embroiderer. Yeats managed the Dun Emer Press from 1902. The Press was located at Runnymede, the house of Evelyn Gleeson. (This house, located in Dundrum, was later renamed Dun Emer. It has since been demolished.) This was set up with the intention of training young women in bookbinding and printing. In 1908, she and her brother William started the Cuala Press, publishing over 70 books including 48 by the poet. Yeats was the first commercial printer in Ireland to work exclusively with hand presses. (Wikipedia)

Bird's-eye view of Florence, Italy, showing important buildings and monuments in raised perspective, along with bridges over the Arno River, and simplified renderings of trees to indicate parks and tree-lined roads. City streets, parks, bridges, buildings and piazzas are labeled. Since Florence, with its rich history of Renaissance architecture, has long been a popular destination for tourists, the map was probably marketed to visitors, especially inasmuch as the company that produced it also published guidebooks. Francesco and Giuseppe Pineider were publishers and stationers in Florence, providing typesetting and lithography. Founded during the second half of the 19th century, they were the leading privately-owned printer of office and personal stationery, and also published tourist guides and illustrations of Florentine monuments. The brothers eventually formed separate companies and concentrated increasingly on stationery products. The company is still in existence under the name Pineider Gallery, with shops around the world. Condition: Generally very good, recently professionally cleaned and deacidified, original folds flattened as backed on linen.

        Gefiedertes Volk [Feathered Folk].

[Germany], [c. 1900]. - Folio, (9 ½ x 14 ¾ inches). Manuscript title page and table of contents, highlighted in gilt. 178 original watercolors on watercolor paper, mounted on thin blue card. Original dark blue half cloth, marbled boards, with title in manuscript on paper label. A lovely album containing a collection of original watercolors depicting various species of birds. Two of the water colors are signed "G. Rauber," and all are in the same hand. Most of the watercolors depict a single bird, but a significant number include two or more species or varieties. The watercolors are grouped under eight different headings: "Sänger" (Songbirds), "Finkenvögel" (Finches), "Prachtfinken" (Showy Finches), "Webervögel" (Weaverbirds), "'Papageren und Sittiche" (Parrots and Parakeets), "Hühnervögel" (Chickens), "Schwimmervögel" (Waterbirds), and "Diverses gef Volk" (Miscellaneous). The songbirds feature the Baltimore oriole, the golden oriole, the song thrush, the nightingale, the black cap, the hill mynah, and about 12 others. The finches include the cardinal, the bullfinch, the chaffinch, and about 25 others. The term "showy finches" is slightly misleading, as the birds featured in this section are not finches at all, but rather vividly plumaged birds often found in captivity, such as canaries, and are intermingled with the weaverbirds. The parrots and parakeets section includes the African gray, the macaw, the budgerigar, the parakeet, the cockatoo, and the lovebird. The miscellaneous portion includes a total of 55 watercolors, depicting both exotic species as well as the more common blue jay, swan, and jackdaw.
