Small personal photograph album 18 x 12.3cm, bound in an East Asian accordion binding, cloth covered boards. The photographs vary in size but mainly are approximately 5.5 x 8cm, the largest are the hand coloured professional Japanese images which are 13.4 x 9cm. Some images faded. Some photographs captioned in ink in French on the card on which they are laid down, three captions are in Chinese characters. Professional Japanese paper repaired hinges, cloth covered boards a little worn with minor loss of cloth. The album covers the period February 17, 1900 to December 1901. It begins with photographs taken on an outing to Shan Hai Kwan (known today as Shanhaiguan) to visit the section of the Great Wall approximately 300 kilometres from Peking and the party's return via Pe-ta-hou. An image shows a street scene in Peking near a large wooden gate captioned only "Une vue de Pekin". The next section of the album contains photographs taken in Japan - "Mt Fuji pris de chemin de fer 21 Novembre 01"; 15 other photographs taken at Nagasaki or taken of Europeans and largely uncaptioned follow - one is captioned "M. Gondareau Consul de Franc a Nagasaki (Dec 01)"; 11 hand-coloured professional photographs of well known Japanese places; 25 small privately taken images of Korea. .

Mammoth plate view of Pleasant Green Taylor's Family

Thomas Studio [c.1900], Ogden, UT - Mammoth plate print (24" by 18"). Unframed on photographer's matte (27" by 21"). Matte is clean with the exception of the lower left corner, which is creased (does not affect the image). Image is very clean and has deep rich sepia tones. Photograph shows Taylor with all of his polygamous wives and children. Taylor's first wife, Clarissa Lake (1828-1900), was deceased when this photograph was taken, but she has been added to the photograph, sitting at Taylor's right side. Apparently, the photographer and the family anticipated adding her ghostly image to the portrait in the darkroom, as space has been saved immediately right of the patriarch to accommodate adding the first wife in the darkroom. This is an unusual image, not just because of its size, but that it shows a polygamous family post Manifesto (Wilford Woodruff's 1890 "Manifesto" was the beginning of the end for officially sanctioned plural marriages in the LDS Church). Taylor and his parents were early LDS converts (1832) joining the fledgling faith in Monroe County, Missouri. The family faced many of the same tribulations of other Mormons of the era. When Pleasant Green arrived in the Great Basin he settled in Harrisville, Utah a small community outside of Ogden, Utah, where he later became a leading figure in the community and also the Bishop of the local LDS ward. Extremely scarce image from uncommon Ogden photographer. Not mentioned in 'Set In Stone Fixed in Glass' nor any other Utah or western photographic reference. Mammoth plate images of any kind from Utah territory are extremely uncommon, especially by lesser known Utah photographers like Thomas. Few pioneer photographers had the wherewithal to afford the significant expense of purchasing and maintaining large format cameras and glass plate negatives.

Nawa Entomological Factory. A collection of eleven post-cards mounted with actual wings of butterflies

Gifu, The Nawa Entomological Factory, ca. 1900. Postcards measuring 9 x 15 cm. Each card contained in the original envelope. The envelopes have a handwritten number and the word "Real Butterfly" in a neat old hand. The cards themselves have a printed species name; on the verso is the printer's address and an artistic butterfly and plant logo. * A very rare and curious item. At the beginning of the 20th century, Mr. Y. Nawa patented a method "by which the scaled patterns of butterflies and moths can be removed on to various articles, such as paper". The pressed specimens of butterflies were prepared by a patented procedure, to prevent them from decay. Whatever the secret of the patent was, it worked perfectly. Even a century later, the specimens still look fresh. The combination of actual wings and hand-painted bodies gives the postcards a somewhat surrealistic feel. Each card shows a different species of butterfly or moth, with hand-painted bodies on which are mounted actual wings taken from a caught specimen. Species depicted are: Ixias pyrene, Huphima nama, Danais agleioides, Danais vulgaris, Cyrestis thyodamas, Heboima glaueippi, Papilo annaeus Fruhs (2x),Fresis iphita Cram, Danais septemtrionis, Junonia lemonias. We found no reference in the handbooks to these postcards, but the Nawa Entomological Factory published a booklet in 1909, entitled "Pressed Specimens of Butterflies and Moths", which explains a bit more about the factory and its merchandise.

[Photo Album]: New Jersey Family Album including Transportation

Bloomfield, New Jersey, Queens, New York. 1900-1960. Oblong quarto. String-tied brown flexible leather with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front cover measuring 10.5" x 12". Very good minus with tears, loose pages, and lacking some photos. A collection of 159 photographs taken by New Jersey photographer H.J. Rosenkranz of his family, and friends, among other things, from the turn of the century until around 1960, mostly uncaptioned. The assembled photos range from landscape shots of rural New Jersey and the surrounding area, people posing on benches, in their house, and outside in various locations. Pictured are photos of a biplane in flight, an elaborate double-decker bus with a spiral staircase, and horse drawn carts full of straw baled by farmers. The album also contains beautiful large shots of train yards and locomotives. There are also some professional family portraits, weddings photos and new baby. Laid in is a Rosenkranz's business card as well as a prayer card for Frieda Rosenkranz, though it is unclear whether she was a wife or daughter. Some of the later images are in color including a trip to Washington DC, complete with cherry blossoms, and one of a man posing on his land and a older woman by a gravesite. A nice assortment of vernacular images from a minor professional photographer from New Jersey capturing 60 years of his history.. .

Longmans, Green, and Co., New York 1900 - Here is a beautiful, collector-grade copy of the true first edition of Churchill's third book and only novel. A very young Churchill was exuberant about publication at the time, even though he later made self-deprecating comments about the book. Moreover, even though Savrola was his third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. It certainly makes for an interesting insight into the early perspective and sentiment of the then very young Churchill. Of note, this is one of the few Churchill books for which the U.S. edition is the true first edition. In fact, the British first edition was issued from American plates. This U.S. first edition is thus the first Churchill book published in the 20th Century. Here is a superlative, near-fine example. The blue cloth binding is tight, square, bright, and clean. All four corners remain sharp. Searching for exterior flaws, we note only trivial hints of wear confined to extremities and a tiny indentation at the top edge of the front cover. Spine presentation is outstanding; there is no toning or soiling to the spine, which bears only the slightest hints of wear at the spine ends and a few barely discernible spots on the lower third of the spine. The spine gilt remains vivid with no dulling or flaking. The contents are clean and bright. No spotting. The text block edges are clean, showing only slight age-toning. The only flaw preventing this copy from being truly fine is slight warping of pages 80-140, as if they were once exposed to moisture. However, this is only speculation, since the binding shows absolutely no sign of any such exposure and the affected pages are unstained and unspotted. A single previous owner name is inked on the ffep, and is clearly an old signature, as the ink has slightly faded and spread. The outstanding binding is protected in a removable, clear mylar cover.         Savrola. A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania

New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900., 1900. First Edition. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper within border. Gilt bright. A lovely, tight copy with minor rubbing. Pre-dates the UK publication. Author's only novel, having just published a short seafaring tale 'Man Overboard' in Harmsworth's Magazine (1899). Both were epic adventure stories, perhaps mirroring Churchill's own early life and experiences, and represent his only attempt at fiction. Woods A3(a)

SAVROLA: A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania

London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1900. First edition published in England, early impression. 8vo, dark green cloth lettered in gilt. 345, ads. A very nice copy, fresh and bright with some foxing as usual. One of only 1500 copies of the second issue (the first issue was also 1500 copies), published within days of the first issue, and in the same format. A very scarce book in this condition, especially in the original cloth.

Longmans, Green, and Company, London 1900 - This is Churchill's third book and only novel. Only 1,500 copies of the first British impression were printed and the survival rate is low, making this considerably more scarce than the U.S. first edition. Here is a first British edition, first printing. This is a respectable, very good overall copy with some flaws. On the positive side, the green cloth binding is bright and unfaded, showing only light wear at the corners and spine extremities. Of particular note is the unfaded spine color. Detracting from the external appearance, the binding is slightly cocked - as are nearly all copies of this edition - and the texture of the spine cloth is slightly mottled. The contents are tight and retain the original black endpapers with no splits or gutter breaks, but there is intermittent spotting throughout and a previous owner name inked on the ffep. The fore edge of the text block also bears a small burn scar (likely an errant cigarette) affecting a .25 inch portion of the edges of pages 321 through 334.         At the Back of the North Wind

London: Blackie & Son,, [1900]. New Edition. With seventy-five illustrations by Arthur Hughes. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, cherub vignette to spine and front board in black, white and gilt, boards ruled in gilt with gilt star border, purple coated endpapers, top edge gilt. 75 engravings in the text. Annotation to verso of half-title. Spine slightly faded and gently rolled, hinges tender, some small stains to boards, tips a little worn, internally very fresh with a occasional minor foxing. An excellent copy. Presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title: "Arthur Porter, with love from George MacDonald". First published in 1871, the book is a fantasy about a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind (later revealed to be Death). A poignant and ethereal book, by this master of fantasy literature, and evocatively illustrated by Arthur Hughes.

Original Art: Jewish Couple in Psychiatrist's Waiting Room

Original art. Acrylic on canvas backed with board. Framed to approximately 29.5" x 23.5". Signed "X. Cugat" lower right. A couple of wrinkles on the canvas, else fine. A satirical painting of a Jewish husband sitting in the waiting room of a psychiatrist, with his wife, who is dressed like a nun. Cugat probably had as much to do with bringing a Latin flavor to American music as any other musician. Born in 1900 in Spain, he emigrated with his family to Cuba when he was five. Trained as a violinist, he moved to New York as a teenager to take advantage of the short-lived tango craze. When it inevitably ended, he employed his talents as an artist to work as a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times and eventually had his cartoons syndicated by King Features. As sound began to be used in movies, he assembled another tango band that had some success. He took his band to New York where it became the resident band for the new Waldorf Astoria. A notorious womanizer, he had four wives and always put attractive women in his groups. He gave Rita Hayworth one of her first jobs, and his third wife was blonde bombshell and singer Abbe Lane. In the mid-1960s, he took another blonde as a wife, who became the famous "cuchi-cuchi girl" Charo. His brother, Francis Cugat, also harbored an artistic bent, and was the artist who created the striking dust jacket art for F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Shipping extra. .

The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1900

London, Sampson Low, Marston and Company, Ltd., , 1900-09. Octavo, 7 volumes including index, original red cloth with titles and gilt medallions to the spines, tope edges gilt. Photogravure frontispieces to all text volumes except Volume V, Joseph Chamberlain's portrait being that for Volume I, eighty-two other black and white plates, one large folding map of South Africa in pocket of Volume I, eighty other maps in all, 5 of them large folding maps contained in end-pockets, 5 of them full-page, the remaining ones folding. Armorial bookplates of William Crowninshield Endicott the Younger to the front pastedowns. Cloth a little mottled and spines mildly sunned, as usual, endpapers of Volume II renewed, some light foxing, but overall a very good set. Volume I second edition, the rest firsts. Volumes I and II inscribed on the front free endpapers by Joseph Chamberlain to William Crowninshield Endicott the Younger, son of the former American Secretary of State for War and Chamberlain's brother-in-law. The War in South Africa was to be of great importance in Chamberlain's career, as Foreign Secretary his handling of the colony has been criticized as erratic; "Once the war broke out Chamberlain shrank from the role of war minister which was otherwise his for the taking—and the war demonstrated a crying need for better military management. The war nevertheless raised him to new heights of eminence in the government. It was Chamberlain who pulled the government out of the slump into which it fell after three British armies were defeated in South Africa within one week in December 1899. It was he who determined the timing of the general election (October 1900), which was called early once the British seemed assured of military victory. Almost alone among the members of the cabinet, he then strode into the electoral fray. Crudely identifying the partisan appeal of the Unionist coalition with the fortunes of the imperial war—'Every seat lost to the Government was a seat gained by the Boers' - he renewed the victory of 1895 …the eruption of guerrilla warfare in South Africa eroded the moral force of the electoral mandate. Still, the war seemed to validate Chamberlain's imperialism, just as the election seemed to prove its popularity …Arthur Balfour, Salisbury's nephew and presumed political heir, heralded Chamberlain at a special presentation to him in the Guildhall towards the end of the war as 'the man who, above all others, has made the British Empire a reality'. Next day The Times (14 February 1902) greeted him as 'the most popular and trusted man in England'. But the war and its rewards for Chamberlain ended together. The heroic fight put up by the Boer guerrillas and the 'methods of barbarism' employed by the British army to force them to make peace discredited Chamberlain's brand of imperialism." (ODNB) Chamberlain had married Endicott's sister Mary in 1888.
