Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese.Berlin: Springer, 1924.

First edition, in original printed wrappers, of one of the most important papers in the history of quantum physics, the invention of 'Bose-Einstein statistics' (Einstein's contribution came later - see below). "The paper by Bose is the fourth and last of the revolutionary papers of the old quantum theory (the other three being by, respectively, Planck [1900], Einstein [1905], and Bohr [1913])" (Pais, <i>Subtle is the Lord</i>, p. 425). "With their work Bose and Einstein established the field of quantum statistics one year before the appearance of quantum mechanics" (Brandt, <i>The Harvest of a Century</i>, p. 139).<br/><br/> "Bose-Einstein statistics, one of two possible ways in which a collection of indistinguishable particles may occupy a set of available discrete energy states. The aggregation of particles in the same state, which is characteristic of particles obeying Bose-Einstein statistics, accounts for the cohesive streaming of laser light and the frictionless creeping of superfluid helium. The theory of this behaviour was developed (1924-25) by Albert Einstein and the Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose, who recognized that a collection of identical and indistinguishable particles can be distributed in this way. <br/><br/> "In contrast to Fermi-Dirac statistics, the Bose-Einstein statistics apply only to those particles not limited to single occupancy of the same state-that is, particles that do not obey the restriction known as the Pauli exclusion principle. Such particles have integer values of spin and are named bosons, after the statistics that correctly describe their behavior" (<i>Britannica</i>).<br/><br/> As Pais points out (<i>Inward Bound</i>, p. 284), Bose's paper "also contains the discovery of Bose-Einstein condensation, an effect without application at that time." This is a phenomenon in which atoms coalesce into a shared quantum state at the lowest available energy. The requisite methods to produce temperatures low enough to test this prediction did not become attainable, however, until the 1990s. In 1995, Eric Cornell and Carl Wieman succeeded in merging about 2,000 individual atoms into a "superatom," a Bose-Einstein condensate large enough to observe with a microscope, work for which they received the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics. Bose-Einstein condensates hold promise for several new technologies, including atom lasers, light-based telecommunications, optical storage of data, and quantum computing. <br/><br/> Bose (1894-1974) was born and educated in Calcutta, leaving "in 1921 to become Reader in Physics at the newly established University of Dacca in East Bengal. In July 1924 he sent a short manuscript entitled "Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese" to Albert Einstein for criticism and possible publication. Einstein himself translated the paper into German and had it published in the <i>Zeitschrift für Physik</i> later that year. He added a note that stated: "In my opinion Bose's derivation of the Planck formula signifies an important advance. The method used also yields the quantum theory of the ideal gas as I will work out in detail elsewhere" ... [In this paper] he succeeded in deriving the Planck blackbody radiation law without reference to classical electrodynamics. Einstein's generalization of Bose's method led to the first of two systems of quantum statistical mechanics, known as the Bose-Einstein statistics. Paul Dirac later coined the term "boson" for particles that obey these statistics. <br/><br/> "Planck's radiation law, derived in 1900, relates the electromagnetic energy density in equilibrium with a blackbody, or ideal radiator... Planck based his derivation on a model in which the radiation emitted and absorbed by the blackbody is in equilibrium with a set of charged oscillators. He took the laws of classical electrodynamics as valid but assumed in addition that each oscillator could emit and absorb only in quanta proportional to its frequency of oscillation... The zero-rest-mass quanta of the electromagnetic field are now called 'photons,' a term introduced in 1926. <br/><br/> "Bose's [derivation of the Planck law] followed a general procedure introduced by Boltzmann for determining the equilibrium energy distribution of the microscopic entities that constitute a macrosystem. The procedure begins by enumerating all the possible, distinguishable microstates of the entities, where each such state is defined by a set of coordinates and momenta. That is, each possible state of a single entity is specified by a point in six-dimensional phase space the axes of which correspond to the three spatial coordinates and the three components of momentum. Each possible state of the system is specified by a distribution of such phase points. Bose's innovation was to assume that two or more such distributions that differ only in the permutation of phase points within a sub-region of phase space of volume <i>h3</i>(where <i>h</i> is Planck's constant) are to be regarded as identical. Thus, in effect he asserted that two truly identical photons cannot be distinguished even in principle. This method of counting has the effect of enhancing the populations of lower-energy photon states at the expense of those of higher energy, and leads to the correct Planck distribution law...<br/><br/> "In July 1924 Einstein had already generalized Bose's results to particles of nonzero rest mass the total number of which is conserved; and in January 1925 he showed that such a gas would, under conditions of extreme temperature and pressure, exhibit marked deviations in behavior from that of a classical ideal Maxwell-Boltzmann gas... Thus, by generalizing Bose's theory, Einstein completed the formulation of the first of two types of quantum statistics. In 1926 Enrico Fermi derived a second system of quantum statistics, now called the Fermi-Dirac statistics, in which it is assumed that each sub-volume <i>h3</i> in phase space can be occupied by no more than one point, consistent with the exclusion principle enunciated by Wolfgang Pauli in 1925" (DSB).<br/><br/> <i>Provenance</i>: Signature of E[rnest] F. Barker on front cover, dated 12 September, 1924. Ernest Franklin Barker (1886-1970) graduated from the University of Rochester in 1908, receiving his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1915.         Late Winter Crow Landscape

New York:, undated [1900].. Fine/ . Fine condition. Original Charcoal on paper mounted onto illustration board. Signed in charcoal on lower left: "W.K.. Stone, CL Bull" Image size: 12 x 9 inches. Board size: 17 x 14 inches. An early landscape study by Charles Livingston Bull and Walter King Stone (American 1875-1949). A tonal composition of an late winter river scene with hints of snow in the foreground and on the distant hills. A murder of crows appear from around the bend on the river in the distant horizon. Due to the soft and ephemeral nature of the landscape -void of accentuated highlights or inked outlines characteristic of Bull's work- it appears the composition is most likely by Walter King Stone- with the addition of the birds contributed by CL Bull. Just who was the mentor and who was the student here is near impossible to determine. Additional drawings by both Stone and Bull acquired at the time of this acquisition place the artists in fellowship, yet no literature documents any formal association. In addition to his established career as an illustrator for popular periodicals and journal, as well as nature writing-1912 Walter King Stone became a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York, where he exhibited 18 landscape paintings during the course of the next quarter of a century.

Verlag von J. Müller, Berlin 1900 - 4to. original cloth, boards with rounded edges, decorated endpapers. x, 48, (38), with 3 additional leaves. A book meant to give "those printers and pressmen who have little opportunity for on-the-job training in this branch [i.e. color printing] a way of doing all color printing, of whatever sort, effectively and with full assurance of a good result, and of mixing colors for the work at hand correctly and efficiently" (pp.vii-viii). A brief chapter on the theory of color is followed by chapters on color jobbing printing, printing of multicolored illustrations, and halftone three- and four-color printing. Following this is an explanation of the color tables and then the tables: thirty-three tables of color samples composed and arranged by various methods, four plates of the same picture in different color combinations, and several examples of monochromatic halftone illustration. Tables 1-3 display seventy-two standard colors. Tables 4-33 form a coherent set of colors and color combinations using inks supplied by Berger & Wirth. There are about 600 colors presented in related groups in finely nuanced sequences, including various degrees of gloss. Inks or mixtures used are identified for each color. Each color sample also appears in three degrees of brightness: the solid color, the color in thick parallel lines alternating with thin white lines (imitating dark halftone), and the color in thin lines alternating with white (light halftone), making 1,800 color possibilities in all! A bright copy. An eight page brochure which is supposed to be in a pocket in the back is not present. Remnant of paper label at bottom of spine. Preliminary pages foxed. original cloth, boards with rounded edges, decorated endpapers [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Autograph booklet from the September 1900 Institute of Journalists annual conference in London, signed by a young Winston Churchill and 28 other of his fellow journalists

London, September 1900. Booklet. This early and noteworthy Churchill signature dates from September 1900. It is found in an autograph booklet signed by 29 journalists attending The Annual Conference of the Institute of Journalists in London. Among the signatures is that of Winston Churchill. In September 1900, Winston Churchill was just 26 years old, a soldier and war-correspondent who had yet to hold elected office. On 8 September 1900, Churchill wrote to his mother, Lady Randolph: "My dear Mamma, I am sorry not to be able to come until Wednesday morning, but I thought it better to attend the Annual Dinner of the Conference of the Institute of Journalists, at which I have been invited to reply for the war-correspondents. It is a good thing now and again to make a speech unconnected with politics and it is also a good thing, and oppportunity not to be missed, to speak before the writers of Great Britain. I hope you will make my apologies to Lady Sassoon. I shall have four days at Alvie before I go south to Oldham, and I am looking forward very much to seeing something of you." (R. Churchill, Companion Volume I, Part 2, p.1197) We have found no record that preserves Churchill's remarks at the Annual Dinner, but his autograph here certainly proves that he did attend. Churchill's time as a war correspondent proved fateful. Less than a month after he signed this booklet, on 1 October 1900, Churchill won his first seat in Parliament in the so-called "khaki election". Churchill had returned from the Boer War only in July 1900, spending the summer campaigning hard in Oldham and capitalizing on his capture and daring escape, and war dispatches from South Africa. It was a still very 19th Century Churchill who left this signature in this autograph book. After the election, Churchill would leave for his first North American lecture tour. While Churchill was abroad, Queen Victoria died, and the end of her 64-year reign also closed Churchill's Victorian career as a cavalry officer and war correspondent adventurer. Churchill returned to England in February 1901 to take his seat in Parliament and begin a 60-year career as one of the 20th Century's great statesmen. The autograph booklet bearing the signatures measures 8 x 6.5 inches and is bound in grey paper wrappers with four ivory pages within that feature gilt lines, rules, and decorations. The signatures appear on the blank front cover, front cover verso, and first page recto. Inked at the head of the front cover in three lines is "The Institute of Journalists | Annual Conference in London | 1900". Churchill's full signature is the twelfth of thirteen on the front cover, in the firm and more youthfully rounded script characteristic of his early signatures. The ink is mildly age-toned but quite distinct. The booklet is in excellent condition, the covers clean, complete, and firmly attached and showing only trivial wear along the hinge, the ivory pages within modestly age-toned. The booklet is protected within a removable, archival mylar sleeve.

Annals of the Astrophysical Observatory of the Smithsonian Institution, Volume I [ Alexander Graham Bell's Copy ]

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1900. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. First Edition. vii, [1-blank], 266 pages. Foldouts, illustrations. Originally issued in wraps (and apparently a cloth edition as well) there were 2 special copies produced that we are aware of, both of which we've handled. The first was for made Langley, the founder of the Observatory. The second (this copy) was for Alexander Graham Bell who was on the board at the time. Both were done in special leather bindings, with the Smithsonian seal on the front cover, title of the volume, and the person to whom the copy was presented in the lower right corner. This copy has been rebacked to match the Langley copy, and has wear to the leather overall, several pieces of leather replaced, and some loss to the gold gilt lettering. This copy was presented to "DOCTOR ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL, Member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents, Smithsonian Institution", so embossed in gold lettering lower right on the front board. There are no annotations internally that we can find by Bell, nor any other ownership marks, but it was clearly his copy. (from the SAO website) : 'It was not until 1890 that SAO was founded by Samuel Pierpont Langley, the Institution's third Secretary, primarily for studies of the Sun. Langley is remembered today as an aeronautical pioneer, but he was trained as an astronomer and was the first American scientist to perceive "astrophysics" as a distinct field. Langley invented the bolometer and studied infrared radiation from the Sun. He foreshadowed modern concerns about climate change by searching for links between solar and terrestrial phenomena.' A nice addition to any collection of books on astronomy or related to Alexander Graham Bell. Hard Cover.

Titlepage and second page with minor folding signs. Wonderful and rare publication !. Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (11 March 1868 - 16 January 1940), known as Lolly, was born at 23 Fitzroy Road, London. She was the daughter of the Irish artist John Butler Yeats and sister of W. B., Jack and Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats. She trained and worked as an art teacher and was a member of William Morris's circle in London before her family returned to Dublin in 1900. Yeats wrote and created the artwork for "Elementary Brush-Work Studies" (published in 1900), an educational book that teaches young children the technique of painting flowers and plants using her simple method. At the suggestion of Emery Walker, who worked with Morris on the Kelmscott Press, Yeats studied printing with the Women's Printing Society in London. In Dublin, she accepted the invitation to join Evelyn Gleeson to form the Dun Emer Guild along with Lily, who was an embroiderer. Yeats managed the Dun Emer Press from 1902. The Press was located at Runnymede, the house of Evelyn Gleeson. (This house, located in Dundrum, was later renamed Dun Emer. It has since been demolished.) This was set up with the intention of training young women in bookbinding and printing. In 1908, she and her brother William started the Cuala Press, publishing over 70 books including 48 by the poet. Yeats was the first commercial printer in Ireland to work exclusively with hand presses. (Wikipedia)
