Savrola. A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania

New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900., 1900. First Edition. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper within border. Gilt bright. A lovely, tight copy with minor rubbing. Pre-dates the UK publication. Author's only novel, having just published a short seafaring tale 'Man Overboard' in Harmsworth's Magazine (1899). Both were epic adventure stories, perhaps mirroring Churchill's own early life and experiences, and represent his only attempt at fiction. Woods A3(a)

        Lord Jim

London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1900. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. A near fine example with only light shelf wear to the extremities and the endpapers ever so slightly browned. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. First printing with the first issue points including the misprints "anyrate" p. 77, l. 5, "cure" (instead of "cured") p. 226, 7 lines from the bottom, the omission of "keep" after "can" p. 226, 7 lines from the bottom, and "his" p. 319, last line, being printed below the line. In a moment of crisis, an idealistic ship's officer abandons his post, leaving several hundred passengers to drown. The event at the center of Joseph Conrad's acclaimed novel establishes the character and fate of Jim. Tormented by his defection from his code of conduct, Jim embarks on the globe-traveling quest to regain honor. In the process, he insinuates himself as a leader among a people unaware of his past. Arthur Symons and other critics read Lord Jim as an exploration of Conrad's own 'ideal of an applauded heroism', an ideal that confronts the demands of pragmatism. Others see an allegory for Conrad's guilt over abandoning his native Poland or, alternatively, a story of universal shame. Conrad has come under modern attack for associating 'natives' with chaos and evil. But in Conrad's novels, it is ultimately the colonial system itself that is fraught with horror." (NYPL Books of the Century 67). Listed by Modern Library as one of the 100 great novels of the twentieth century.

Lieutenant-Colonel John Haughton, Commandant of the 36th Sikhs. A Hero of Tirah. A Memoir. THE ORIGINAL EDITION

John Murray, 1900, 1900Roy. 8vo., First Edition, with a fine portrait frontispiece in photogravure (original tissue guard present), 25 plates on 22, a large folding plan, and 3 large folding maps on japon at end; original burgundy cloth, upper board elaborately blocked and lettered in gilt, gilt back (very lightly faded), gilt top, uncut, very neatly recased with new endpapers. Sold from an institution with its small neat stamp on frontispiece recto and title, and neat accession number on lower backstrip and title verso. THE ORIGINAL EDITION OF THE IMPORTANT AND ELUSIVE BIOGRAPHY. 36th Sikhs was raised in 1887 to counter Russian expansion and to reinforce the North-West Frontier. Although relatively short-lived, the regiment gained immortality during the Tirah Campaign when, under the command of Lt.-Col. John Haughton it defended Samana Ridge against a large force of Pathans. Although greatly outnumbered, Haughton's force performed many acts of great bravery, most notably at Saragarhi. The memoir is dedicated to the headmasters of Shrewsbury and Uppingham schools, at which were educated respectively General John Colpoys Haughton and Lt.-Col. John Haughton. The schools' crests are blocked in gilt on upper board, and appear in line on the dedication page. The original edition is extremely scarce; this is the only copy we have seen (or heard of) in thirty years.

The Magazine of Art, Works of Old Masters

Gahosha, Nihonbashi, Tokyo, Japan 1900 - Gahosha, Nihonbashi, Tokyo, Japan, 1900. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Magazine of Art, Works of Old Masters, Japanese book, 1900, on Asian art including Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan paintings Published by Gahosha, Nihonbashi, Tokyo, Japan, 1900. Edited by Hoshino. Published 20th October 1900, printed 17th October 1900. A very attractive book in very good condition. Thread sewn printed covers. Some general shelf wear and minor pencil marks but very good overall. Binding is sound. The text pages are very good printed on a quality heavy paper stock. Pages unnumbered but comprising approx. 49 pages of quality black and white plates. These appear to represent 12 pages of Chinese old masters, 1 Tibetan painting and 36 pages of Japanese painting - some are by unknown artists and some others may be Tibetan also. These are then followed by approx 90 pages of Japanese text page - the inner title page also carrying English text. The book features paintings by Chinese masters; Senshun, Emperor Kiso, Chochuboku, Saihakushi, Rikuhozan, Chosho, Joyeki, Chinyo, Kosen, Henbunshin, and Kyu-ei. Work by Japanese artists includes calligraphy/writings/poetry by Jakuren Hoshi, Lord Gyosei, Onu Totu, Lord Sari, Ikkyu, Minamoto Toshiyori and Terumoto. There is also painting by a number of unknown artists as well as Takuma Shokei, Nobuzane, Hidenobu, Kanaoka, Kasuga and Motumitsu. There are also many beautiful plates from a pictorial roll named Kegon which appears to be of some importance. There are also plates from a historical roll named Shikisan by Nobusane. The text indicates that this was intended as a regular publication and the cover annotation suggests this book comprises a number of volumes bound together in one book, described as Vols 6 to 9. The text also mentions that were two versions of the publication, one being a special edition on Japanese paper, costing twice as much as the standard version. Due to the thickness of the paper the plates are printed on, we would assume this is the special edition. This is the first time we have come across this book, so it appears to be a very scarce publication. An extremely nice volume. Dimensions: 305mm high x 278mm wide x 20mm deep. More photos on request.         Pferde 2".

„Malweibern".
