Autograph booklet from the September 1900 Institute of Journalists annual conference in London, signed by a young Winston Churchill and 28 other of his fellow journalists

London, September 1900. Booklet. This early and noteworthy Churchill signature dates from September 1900. It is found in an autograph booklet signed by 29 journalists attending The Annual Conference of the Institute of Journalists in London. Among the signatures is that of Winston Churchill. In September 1900, Winston Churchill was just 26 years old, a soldier and war-correspondent who had yet to hold elected office. On 8 September 1900, Churchill wrote to his mother, Lady Randolph: "My dear Mamma, I am sorry not to be able to come until Wednesday morning, but I thought it better to attend the Annual Dinner of the Conference of the Institute of Journalists, at which I have been invited to reply for the war-correspondents. It is a good thing now and again to make a speech unconnected with politics and it is also a good thing, and oppportunity not to be missed, to speak before the writers of Great Britain. I hope you will make my apologies to Lady Sassoon. I shall have four days at Alvie before I go south to Oldham, and I am looking forward very much to seeing something of you." (R. Churchill, Companion Volume I, Part 2, p.1197) We have found no record that preserves Churchill's remarks at the Annual Dinner, but his autograph here certainly proves that he did attend. Churchill's time as a war correspondent proved fateful. Less than a month after he signed this booklet, on 1 October 1900, Churchill won his first seat in Parliament in the so-called "khaki election". Churchill had returned from the Boer War only in July 1900, spending the summer campaigning hard in Oldham and capitalizing on his capture and daring escape, and war dispatches from South Africa. It was a still very 19th Century Churchill who left this signature in this autograph book. After the election, Churchill would leave for his first North American lecture tour. While Churchill was abroad, Queen Victoria died, and the end of her 64-year reign also closed Churchill's Victorian career as a cavalry officer and war correspondent adventurer. Churchill returned to England in February 1901 to take his seat in Parliament and begin a 60-year career as one of the 20th Century's great statesmen. The autograph booklet bearing the signatures measures 8 x 6.5 inches and is bound in grey paper wrappers with four ivory pages within that feature gilt lines, rules, and decorations. The signatures appear on the blank front cover, front cover verso, and first page recto. Inked at the head of the front cover in three lines is "The Institute of Journalists | Annual Conference in London | 1900". Churchill's full signature is the twelfth of thirteen on the front cover, in the firm and more youthfully rounded script characteristic of his early signatures. The ink is mildly age-toned but quite distinct. The booklet is in excellent condition, the covers clean, complete, and firmly attached and showing only trivial wear along the hinge, the ivory pages within modestly age-toned. The booklet is protected within a removable, archival mylar sleeve.

Annals of the Astrophysical Observatory of the Smithsonian Institution, Volume I [ Alexander Graham Bell's Copy ]

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1900. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. First Edition. vii, [1-blank], 266 pages. Foldouts, illustrations. Originally issued in wraps (and apparently a cloth edition as well) there were 2 special copies produced that we are aware of, both of which we've handled. The first was for made Langley, the founder of the Observatory. The second (this copy) was for Alexander Graham Bell who was on the board at the time. Both were done in special leather bindings, with the Smithsonian seal on the front cover, title of the volume, and the person to whom the copy was presented in the lower right corner. This copy has been rebacked to match the Langley copy, and has wear to the leather overall, several pieces of leather replaced, and some loss to the gold gilt lettering. This copy was presented to "DOCTOR ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL, Member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents, Smithsonian Institution", so embossed in gold lettering lower right on the front board. There are no annotations internally that we can find by Bell, nor any other ownership marks, but it was clearly his copy. (from the SAO website) : 'It was not until 1890 that SAO was founded by Samuel Pierpont Langley, the Institution's third Secretary, primarily for studies of the Sun. Langley is remembered today as an aeronautical pioneer, but he was trained as an astronomer and was the first American scientist to perceive "astrophysics" as a distinct field. Langley invented the bolometer and studied infrared radiation from the Sun. He foreshadowed modern concerns about climate change by searching for links between solar and terrestrial phenomena.' A nice addition to any collection of books on astronomy or related to Alexander Graham Bell. Hard Cover.

        Elementary Brushwork Studies.

London/Liverpool, George Philip & Son (& Nephew), 1900.. Oblong Quarto. 11 pages of text and XXIV plates with explanations. 4 pages in the rear: "List of Materials for Brushwork, specially selected and approved by Miss Yeats" as well as advertising for othe rpublications by Miss Yeats. Original Hardcover (brown cloth with lettering to front cover). Extraordinarily excellent condition with only minor signs of wear (corners slightly bumped). Interior fresh and bright. Titlepage and second page with minor folding signs. Wonderful and rare publication !. Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (11 March 1868 - 16 January 1940), known as Lolly, was born at 23 Fitzroy Road, London. She was the daughter of the Irish artist John Butler Yeats and sister of W. B., Jack and Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats. She trained and worked as an art teacher and was a member of William Morris's circle in London before her family returned to Dublin in 1900. Yeats wrote and created the artwork for "Elementary Brush-Work Studies" (published in 1900), an educational book that teaches young children the technique of painting flowers and plants using her simple method. At the suggestion of Emery Walker, who worked with Morris on the Kelmscott Press, Yeats studied printing with the Women's Printing Society in London. In Dublin, she accepted the invitation to join Evelyn Gleeson to form the Dun Emer Guild along with Lily, who was an embroiderer. Yeats managed the Dun Emer Press from 1902. The Press was located at Runnymede, the house of Evelyn Gleeson. (This house, located in Dundrum, was later renamed Dun Emer. It has since been demolished.) This was set up with the intention of training young women in bookbinding and printing. In 1908, she and her brother William started the Cuala Press, publishing over 70 books including 48 by the poet. Yeats was the first commercial printer in Ireland to work exclusively with hand presses. (Wikipedia)

Deutschlands Heer und Flotte in Wort und Bild. Germany's Army and Navy by Pen and Picture. 1899.

The Werner Company, Akron, OH 1900 - Book. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. Text in German and English, with one column on each page devoted to each. Original pictorial cloth. 17.5 by 13.5 inches (44 by 35 cm); [8], 181 pp., with 42 fine, bright chromolithographic plates of military costume, ships, and troops on parade, drilling, on horseback, reconnoitering and scouting, bivouacking, in the field and barracks, engineering -- in short, these are far more than static costume illustrations but rather ones that depict action scenes. Published by Werner, which was a leading German American publisher in the late nineteenth century that began by publishing a German newspaper in the U.S. This, being a bilngual publication, was perhaps the company's most opulent book that clearly was aimed at appealing to Teutonic patriotism of the immigrant community well before the First World War squelched this type of fervor. Similar chromolithography "Wort und Bild" books were also being published in Germany itself, such as ones celebrating the Franco-Prussian War,yet this particular title is artistically superior to much of the genre. It might also be observed that the genre was not unique to German culture. (I.e. Ogden's Uniforms of the Army, depicting American army costume throughout the nineteenth century, published just a few years earlier.) Again, for dynamism and beauty of the image, this title is hard to beat. Some binding wear, and joints repaired at extremities. Interior is tight and extraordinarily clean. Plates are pristine, and even the tissue guards may be described so. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The River War, An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan

London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1900. First edition, second printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, second printing of Churchill's second book. Published in two massive volumes in 1899, the first edition is compelling in many respects. First is the inherent merit of the work itself, which is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. Writing about the British campaign in the Sudan, Churchill - a young officer in a colonial British army - is unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of Imperial cynicism and cruelty. The work offers the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century from the distinctly 19th century battlefields where Churchill learned to write and earned his early fame. Not only a compelling piece of writing, the first edition is also beautiful, rare, and bibliographically important. The large volumes are aesthetically striking, decorated with gilt representations of the Mahdi's tomb on the spines and a gunboat on the front covers. Each of the two large volumes is printed on heavy paper with a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans. There were just three printings of the first edition (2,646 copies total). All three printings are virtually identical, issued respectively in November 1899, February 1900, and June 1900. Moreover, this is one of the few Churchill books for which there was no concurrent U.S. first edition. Bibliographically it is notable that the first edition is the only unabridged edition to this day. Here is a first edition, second printing set in very good condition in the original bindings. This second printing is only readily distinguished from the first printing by the words "Second Impression" on the title page and a date of 1900 replacing 1899. This copy is ex-library and shows some superficial wear, but is nonetheless notably square, clean, tight, and complete, with no exterior ex-library marks. The bindings remain tight and square with modest overall scuffing, but certainly have quite respectable shelf presentation. There is the faint rectangular ghost of what may have been stickers on each front cover below the title, but the ghosting is unobtrusive and the spines are completely free of any past or present markings. Internally, minimal ex-library markings are limited to the ink stamp of "Layton Library" on each second free endpaper along with some adjacent library notation, as well as what we assume may be de-accession date notation on the rear free endpaper recto of both volumes. We find no other ex-library marks. The original black endpapers are present, as are all maps, plans, and illustrations, including the tissue guards at each frontispiece. The contents are unusually clean for the edition; we detect only a hint of spotting to the Volume I frontispiece verso and the first and final leaves of Volume II. Volume I has a 6.5 inch neatly repaired closed tear to the rear free endpaper. Each half-title bears the circular embossed device of Dr. Daniel Sperber, a prominent nuclear theorist. The Volume I lower half title also bears 11 lines of inked notation as follows: "This came out when I was at Bradfield. | There is a copy in the Beaumont Library. | As a survey of the situation | before it began and the conduct |of the operations it stood beside | [indecipherable word] in the Guinea. It also | forms a foreword to the life of | Cromer the greatest of the | Pro-Consuls. | TRI | 5*I*1959" Bibliographic reference: Cohen A2.1.c, Woods/ICS A2(a.2), Langworth p.29.

Bookplate of William P. Olds laid in at front of each volume. A Large Paper Copy. A hint of wear to joints and extremities, spines mildly faded to olive green (spine of second volume with just slightly irregular fading), but still A FINE COPY of this deluxe edition, the morocco bindings solid and pleasing, and the text and plates virtually pristine. Ford writes in his introduction to this edition that he aims to let the father of our country tell his biography himself, "using his own phrases and words to illustrate his attitude towards public questions and public characters." But Ford's extensive knowledge of American history also masterfully contextualizes Washington in time and place, providing a narrative of the era as well as of the man. Our author states that this "tribute to [Washington's] memory" is intended to remedy what he sees as the neglect of the president's opinions and writings. Worthington Chauncey Ford (1858-1941) was descended from a long line of intellectuals, including Governor William Bradford of Plymouth Colony, Noah Webster, and Harvard College president Charles Chauncey. A pioneer in the acquisition of American historical documents, Ford was also one of the most prolific historian-editors in American history, publishing more than 260 articles, essays, and books. Though a college dropout, he was elected president of the American Historical Association in 1917, and was appointed to a position in the Department of State, where he launched an ambitious plan to publish and disseminate the agency's vast and significant holdings of 18th and 19th century historical manuscripts. He also held positions at the Boston Public Library, the Library of Congress, and the Massachusetts Historical Society. Deluxe copies of this work are, not surprisingly, difficult to find, and even those do not seem to have our special morocco doublures.

A FINE CHARCOAL RENDERING OF THE HEAD OF A YOUNG MAN, signed "James Montgomery Flagg" at lower right

n.p., n.d. [1900's]. Image size approximately 16 x 10 inches. Matted . A strong portrait, a little larger than life size, of a dark haired young man, in profile looking right, wearing a black bow tie. The subject is attractive, but the artist has not idealized him: it is a candid and compelling rendering, done with the typical bravura of the almost legendary American artist and illustrator. James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) "lived with gusto. He epitomized the public concept of the handsome, bohemian artist, surrounded by beautiful models, dashing off pictures with sheer exuberance of talent-His rapid portrait studies and incisive caricatures were prized by many prominent sitters" (Reed, p. 95). Flagg is best known for his World War I Uncle Sam recruiting poster, "I Want You," and as a painter of serious portraits as well. He exhibited in the Paris salon of 1900, at the National Academy of Design and the New York Watercolor Club. He was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1980. A FINE EXAMPLE OF FLAGG'S PORTRAITURE
