        Académie d'homme 2.

Original pencil drawing, heightened with ink (mixed). Signature stamp of the artist's signature in the lower right corner of the work, and signature stamp of the workshop at the back. This drawing is part of a series of ten studies for Bertin to 1920-1925. Very nice condition. Provenance: the artist's studio, referenced to catalog Atelier Louis Anquetin (Thierry de Maigret, 28/11/08). Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant-garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. With Émile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893, Louis Anquetin continues to explore new opportunities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, after a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias pictorial that will line the general art movement, and take away from his friends. Dazzled by the baroque art and its creative force, so he thinks his childhood friends were involved in a pathway leading to the death of painting. He believes in a "perfect painting" which is embodied in the re-remember the lessons of Michelangelo and Rubens among others. His work becomes more conventional, he advocated a return to business by offering to reflect on the a priori conditions of any possible form of art in accordance with the rules of perspective and anatomy, as practiced by the masters the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Leaving only a few works that can be described as monumental, Anquetin turns prolific with its many studies and sketches, who considered that the design was "a very powerful means of expression" compulsory foundation of all arts plastics. Working voluntarily countdown of his time, Louis Anquetin made possible the existence of an original modern figuration. By his obstinacy and his passion for painting, he has indeed prevented is completely closed the way to the great Western tradition. You can admire his works in many prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay or the Louvre in Paris, San Francisco and Detroit, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery and the Tate London, etc..         Beaux and Belles of England

New York - Athenaeum Press, 1900 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractivetwo-volume account of the life of the great humourist Laurence Sterne by Percy Fitzgerald. These books constitute almost an entire re-write of Fitzgerald's previous account of Sterne, on the discovery of a number of unpublished letters and fresh materials. Fitzgerald also benefited from theassistance of his late friend Mr. John Forster andthe Rev. Whitwell, an accomplished critic and the author of the best account of Sterne. Many critics and writers of eminence- Mr. Carlyle, M. Taine, Mr. Elwin, Mr. Traill - have tried to analyse Sterne's style and methods, contrasting him with Rabelais, Cervantes, Fielding, and Dickens. The truth is, our author was so capricious, and even framgmentary and disorderly in his system, that comparison is impossible. (Percy Fitzgerald). Condition: In a part maroon Morocco leather binding with marbled plates. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. There isa closed tear to the spine on volume one. Internally, firmly bound with marbled end plates. Pages bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

A letter from Edward Tennyson Reed

ONT>7 by 4.3, 1900 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A hand-written message from cartoonistReed. On headed letter paper. A possible transcription of a telegram. Edward Tennyson Reed (18601933), cartoonist and caricaturist . . . had very little early training as a draughtsman, but. . . conceived the idea of applying a burlesque of prehistoric life to contemporary events and persons and called the series Prehistoric Peeps. Thus A Quiet Game of Whist in Early Times demonstrates the inconvenience caused to card-playing cave dwellers by the presence of the stegosaurus, the triceratops, and the pterodactyl. The drawings, which were executed in a spirit of broad and riotous comedy, became fashionable, and no doubt the fact that the Natural History Museum at South Kensington had not been open long enough for the skeletons of ancient monsters to lose the charm of novelty, greatly added to their appeal. It is certain that scientific lecturers bore witness at the time to their probable verisimilitude, and that schools applied for the use of Reed's pictures as instructional magic-lantern-slides. For many years he used palaeontology, archaeology, and heraldry as the basis of his humour - ODNB. Condition: The leaf is generally clean with very occasional light spots, and very slight browning to the edges. Overall the condition is near fine..

The Indians of To-Day, Illustrated with Full-Page Portraits of Living Indians

Chicago: Herbert S. Stone and Company, 1900. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Folio. pp [8], 185, with index, 55 plates from photographs by Rinehart. Original pictorial cloth, top edge gilt. Very slight bumping to lower corners, mild foxing to front endpapers, else fine. A native of New York, Grinnell had a deep interest in the life and culture of the Plains Indians, and made summer trips from the East to reservations, where he recorded Native American history and culture. "In 1895 President Grover Cleveland, aware of Grinnell's knowledge of Native American customs, had sent him as a special commissioner to help obtain a treaty with the Blackfoot and Fort Belknap Indians. Later, as President Roosevelt's personal emissary, he negotiated a land controversy on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota" (ANB). According to the Preface, this work was inspired by a visit to the Indian Congress held in Omaha in 1898 in conjunction with the Trans-Mississippi International Exposition, which stimulated among its white attendees "a desire to know more about [the Indians], their past and their present, and the outlook for their future." In response to this interest, he offers chapters on history, folklore, and customs, as well as life on the reservations and the character and role of Indian agents.

Fine in publisher's blue cloth, lavishly decorated in gilt with sarcophagi and lotus leaves etc. crisp, clean and supernaturally sharp, minor bumping to the spine ends. Top edge gilt. In a fine example (I say example, as if I've seen five and this is the nicest) of the dustwrapper, a dustwrapper from 1900 in near fine to dine condition, spotlessly clean and with some very minor chipping and creasing to the head of the spine. Absolutely glorious, pretty scarce anyway and very rare in this condition with its wrapper. A collection of stories originally published in the Pall Mall Magazine. William Waldorf Astor, being a member of the famed American Astor clan, moved to Britain in 1891 and was unusually made a Peer of The Realm in 1916, becoming Viscount Astor of Hever Castle for his generous contributions to war charities. A splendid copy.

        The River War

London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green & Co.,, 1900. An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan. Edited by Col. F. Rhodes. Illustrated by Angus McNeill, Seaforth Highlanders. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles and pictorial decoration gilt to spines and upper boards, black-coated endpapers. Portrait frontispiece in each volume, 4 illustrated plates and 11 folding maps in volume 1, 2 illustrated plates and 9 folding maps and three non-folding maps in volume 2, and numerous illustrations, maps and plans in the text. A particularly nice copy: bright and tight. First edition, second impression, of Churchill's second book, preceded only by The Story of the Malakand Field Force (1898). It includes, of course, his account of the charge of the 21st Lancers, to whom he was attached, at Omdurman on 2 September 1898, described by the Dictionary of National Biography as "that last cavalry charge of the dying century". DNB also considers The River War a "superb" history; whilst Churchill himself more graphically called it "a tale of blood and war".

In 1858 the two men co-authored the first publication on natural selection (Tendency of Species to Form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection), though it was not until Darwin's publication of On the Origin of Species that the theory had a major impact on the scientific world.
