[In Japanese] Kijaku kire honcho - Cut fabric samples for kimonos

Japan: n.d., c.1900. Landscape quarto (205 × 305 mm). Japanese four-hole stab-stitched binding, original card wraps with mounted leather corners, calligraphic kanji title to front panel. Nearly 600 variously-sized swatches of woven and painted colour silk samples mounted on 100 leaves of thickish, textured paper The covers somewhat rubbed and creased, leather corners dry and scuffed, some samples with minor staining from the mounting paste, and with some fraying at the edges, but overall very good. Remarkable salesman's sample catalogue for painted and woven silks for Japanese kimonos during the late Meiji period. The date range that is suggested by the style of binding, and the types of textiles sampled would be in the last decade of so of the nineteenth century. The samples themselves are not uniform in shape or size, having the appearance rather of being scraps from the cutting floor, typical practice in the equivalent catalogues in the West during the late Victorian era. This would appear to be the sample-book for the purple-lavender-blue section of the textile spectrum. The selection of samples show a range of weaving and dying techniques, some show Katagami Kimono textile stencil art, in which the patterns have been created by rice paste pressed through heavy oiled stencils onto the silk before dying, these often being darker coloured patterns typical for summer yukata kimonos; some are more typical of the roketsuzome batik-style process; a range of motifs drawn from the natural world predominate, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, ferns and dragonflies; many examples show light brocading. In itself an intriguing object, that also offers glimpses into Japanese styles at the turn of the twentieth century.

Goodwin in contemporary 3/4 red morocco over marbled boards. a.e.g. Boston: J.B. Millet Co., [1900]. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, limited to 500 copies. This beautiful copy of Denton's Butterflies represents a major achievement in the field of nature printing in America. It is the first systematic study of butterflies and moths in North America and is special for its unique nature printing technique and hand-colouring. At the recent exhibition of Nature Printing / Color Printing In The Nineteenth Century at University Of Delaware Library, Denton's Butterflies was described as containing the "most successful of all" nature-printed illustrations. According to the preface, the author personally collected over 50,000 butterflies and moths from all parts of the United States for this edition. He then made "Nature Prints" from the direct transfer of the specimens themselves. Denton writes: "The scales of the wings of the insects are transferred onto paper, while the bodies are printed from engravings and afterwards coloured by hand." An excellent copy in immaculate condition. Bennett 33. Nissen 1079.

Tales of the Wonder Club. By "DryasDust"

[London]: Harrison and Sons, [1899-1900] - A classic collection of tales of the supernatural, first issued here by "Dryasdust", then later, in 1903, under the name of M.Y. Halidom. "M.Y. Halidom, itself a pseudonym, without doubt, is also a 'pen-name' of 'Dryasdust', whose 'Tales of the Wonder Club', a rare and much-sought fantasy book, was the source of much speculation as to its author, at the turn of the century. The problem has never been satisfactorily solved and the talented author is an unknown, even today. There is little room to doubt that it is someone of importance in the literary world" (Wolff) In 2005, British businessman and writer Alexander Huth (1838-1914) was identified as the author of Tales of the Wonder Club under his psuedonyms "Dryasdust" and "M.Y. Halidom" First edition. 3 vols., 8vo. Illustrated by John Jellicoe and Val Prince after designs by the author. In publisher's gilt-stamped plum cloth. Spine of first volume faded to brown, corners bumped, but overall a bright, tight set. Wolff 7640; Bleiler: Guide To Supernatural Fiction, 565 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Original pencil drawing, heightened with ink (mixed). Signature stamp of the artist's signature in the lower right corner of the work, and signature stamp of the workshop at the back. This drawing is part of a series of ten studies for Bertin to 1920-1925. Very nice condition. Provenance: the artist's studio, referenced to catalog Atelier Louis Anquetin (Thierry de Maigret, 28/11/08). Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant-garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. With Émile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893, Louis Anquetin continues to explore new opportunities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, after a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias pictorial that will line the general art movement, and take away from his friends. Dazzled by the baroque art and its creative force, so he thinks his childhood friends were involved in a pathway leading to the death of painting. He believes in a "perfect painting" which is embodied in the re-remember the lessons of Michelangelo and Rubens among others. His work becomes more conventional, he advocated a return to business by offering to reflect on the a priori conditions of any possible form of art in accordance with the rules of perspective and anatomy, as practiced by the masters the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Leaving only a few works that can be described as monumental, Anquetin turns prolific with its many studies and sketches, who considered that the design was "a very powerful means of expression" compulsory foundation of all arts plastics. Working voluntarily countdown of his time, Louis Anquetin made possible the existence of an original modern figuration. By his obstinacy and his passion for painting, he has indeed prevented is completely closed the way to the great Western tradition. You can admire his works in many prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay or the Louvre in Paris, San Francisco and Detroit, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery and the Tate London, etc..         Beaux and Belles of England

New York - Athenaeum Press, 1900 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractivetwo-volume account of the life of the great humourist Laurence Sterne by Percy Fitzgerald. These books constitute almost an entire re-write of Fitzgerald's previous account of Sterne, on the discovery of a number of unpublished letters and fresh materials. Fitzgerald also benefited from theassistance of his late friend Mr. John Forster andthe Rev. Whitwell, an accomplished critic and the author of the best account of Sterne. Many critics and writers of eminence- Mr. Carlyle, M. Taine, Mr. Elwin, Mr. Traill - have tried to analyse Sterne's style and methods, contrasting him with Rabelais, Cervantes, Fielding, and Dickens. The truth is, our author was so capricious, and even framgmentary and disorderly in his system, that comparison is impossible. (Percy Fitzgerald). Condition: In a part maroon Morocco leather binding with marbled plates. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. There isa closed tear to the spine on volume one. Internally, firmly bound with marbled end plates. Pages bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

A letter from Edward Tennyson Reed

ONT>7 by 4.3, 1900 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A hand-written message from cartoonistReed. On headed letter paper. A possible transcription of a telegram. Edward Tennyson Reed (18601933), cartoonist and caricaturist . . . had very little early training as a draughtsman, but. . . conceived the idea of applying a burlesque of prehistoric life to contemporary events and persons and called the series Prehistoric Peeps. Thus A Quiet Game of Whist in Early Times demonstrates the inconvenience caused to card-playing cave dwellers by the presence of the stegosaurus, the triceratops, and the pterodactyl. The drawings, which were executed in a spirit of broad and riotous comedy, became fashionable, and no doubt the fact that the Natural History Museum at South Kensington had not been open long enough for the skeletons of ancient monsters to lose the charm of novelty, greatly added to their appeal. It is certain that scientific lecturers bore witness at the time to their probable verisimilitude, and that schools applied for the use of Reed's pictures as instructional magic-lantern-slides. For many years he used palaeontology, archaeology, and heraldry as the basis of his humour - ODNB. Condition: The leaf is generally clean with very occasional light spots, and very slight browning to the edges. Overall the condition is near fine..
