The Vision; or Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise

New York: Thomas Y Crowell & Co, 1900. Fine/Fine. Translated by the Rev. H. F. Cary, AM. Octavo: [iv] vii-x, [1], 452; with frontispiece and 23 original plates. Includes Cary's 1814 Preface and A Chronological View of the Age of Dante, in addition to Cary's notes on the text. Fine copy with bright gilt and tight page block. Housed in original publisher's green cloth box and dust jacket; original publisher's gray cloth binding, with blind stamping and gilt lettering to spine and front cover; gilt to page edges. An attractive copy of Dante's Divine Comedy, with the 1814 translation by H.F. Cary and illustrations by Gustave Dore. One of the world's great masterpieces and a foundational text of Italian literature. The Comedy took over a decade for Dante to write, he worked on it in exile, having been sent out of his native Florence in 1302, when his political faction fell out of favor. The work's genius was quickly recognized -- Boccaccio himself was so obsessed with it that he was responsible for adding the prefix "Divine." With Cary's translation to English blank verse, the poetry of Dante's original work became accessible in England and America for the first time, influencing countless more authors, from Ezra Pound and James Joyce, to Jorge Luis Borges. "Of all the translators of Dante...Mr. Cary is the most successful; and we cannot but consider his work as a great acquisition to the English reader. It is executed with a fidelity almost without example" (Friedrich). Includes attractive plates from Gustave Dore, a premier illustrator of the period who brought Dante's work visually to life. Report of the Dante Society, 39. The American Alighieri, 70-73. Catalogue of English Books, 200. Dante's Fame Abroad, 284. Fine in Fine dust jacket.

SPEECHES AND ADDRESSES OF WILLIAM McKINLEY FROM MARCH 1, 1897 TO MAY 30, 1900 Inscribed to a Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Future Vice President

Doubleday & McClure Co., New York 1900 - Bound in 3/4 brown morocco and marbled boards with a gilt-decorated spine. Frontispiece engraved portrait of McKinley. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the first blank as President: "For Hon./Charles G. Dawes,/with sincere regards/William McKinley/Aug. 6, 1900." Books inscribed by McKinley are fairly scarce, in no small part because he was assassinated at the beginning of his second term in 1901, and those with any association value are extremely scarce. Highlights of his administration include the annexation of Hawaii and the Spanish-American War. Charles G. Dawes managed the Illinois portion of William McKinley's bid for the Presidency in 1896. Following McKinley's election, Dawes was rewarded for his efforts by being named Comptroller of the Currency, United States Department of the Treasury. Dawes left the Department of the Treasury in order to pursue a seat in the U.S. Senate, but McKinley's assassination disrupted his bid. He was appointed in 1921 by President Warren G. Harding as the first Director of the Bureau of the Budget. For his work on the Dawes Plan, a program to enable Germany to restore and stabilize its economy after the war, Dawes shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925. He was elected Vice President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge in 1924, with whom he had a tempestuous relationship. As far as we know, Dawes is the only Vice President to write a pop standard, "It's All in the Game," recorded by Isaac Hayes, Nat "King" Cole, Barry Manilow, Van Morrison, Elton John, and many others. Rubbing to the joints, particularly the front which is still tight. Old dampstain to the heel of the spine extending to the covers with no effect on the contents. Very Good and a superb association copy [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Klaus Bölling (1928-2014; Publizist), Mildred Scheel (1932-1985), Franz Burda (1903-1985; Verleger), Heinrich Harrer (1912-2006; Bergsteiger), Johannes Heesters (1903-2011; Schauspieler), Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934; General), Reinhard Mohn (1921-2009; Verleger), Henri Nannen (1913-1996; Verleger), Sigi Sommer (1914-1996; Schriftsteller); Axel Springer (1912-1985; Verleger), Egon Bahr (1922-2015; Politiker), Josef Ertl (1925-2000; Politiker), Georg Leber (1920-2012; Politiker), Annemarie Renger (1919-2008; Politikerin), Franz Josef Strauß (1915-1988; Politiker) und Kurt Waldheim (1918-2007; Österreicher). Beispiele: Brief an Franz Josef Strauß vom 18. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Hartford, CT: The American Publishing Company, 1900. Original cloth. Near Fine. True Williams. A surprisingly crisp, well-preserved copy of this early, 1900 reprint of Twain's immortal classic, which was first published (by the same publisher) in 1876. This copy, identical to the first edition in design and appearance, is tight and very solid in its deep-blue cloth, with bright gilt-design and crisp, completely unflecked gilt-titling along the front panel and spine. Minor bumping to the upper tips, light soiling along the rear panel and discrete former owner stamp at the dedication page. Still though, very presentable and, graded conservatively, a genuinely Near Fine copy. Octavo, the wonderful True Williams illustrations thruout are all pristine.

        Watercolor album of Australian Flowers

1900 - A charming album by a talented amateur artist. The flora appear to be all Australian and include Sturt Desert Pea, Grevillea, Geraldton Wax, Everlastings, Spider orchids, Wattle, Boronia & Red Gum, amongst others. The two landscapes are painted in the manner of postcards juxtaposed on the page with Australian flora, and decorated around the edge. One view is of a shoreline, with a boat, shed and fence, the other of a church, dirt roads and fencing, but not readily identifiable. Oblong lge 8vo, 10.25 x 7.5", dark green embossed covers with the gilt initials "L.R." stamped on front. There are 22 watercolor flowers, 2 views & 1 butterfly on 66 pages; the last half of the album is largely blank. The thick art paper pages are of a variety of colors. Paper color varies between cream, tan, pale green & blue-gray. The paintings themselves are very delicate with some in a slightly less finished state. End papers tanned but the paintings are in very good condition. Little rubbed at extremities, otherwise bright and clean. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An Outpost of Progress" [in] The Ladysmith Treasury. Edited by J. Eveleigh Nash

London: Sands & Company, 1900 - 8vo, original pictorial green cloth, gilt lettering, t.e.g. Conrad's story "An Outpost of Progress," which first appeared in Cosmopolis magazine in 1897 and was collected in Tales of Unrest (1898), is included here in an anthology published to raise funds for the besieged citizens of the town of Ladysmith, South Africa, a contribution Conrad make along with 15 other authors (F. Anstey, W.E. Norris, Edgar Fawcett and Eden Phillpotts among them) without fee. The profits from the book went to the Mayor of Ladysmith, a town which was under siege by the Boers and not freed until early 1900. This is Conrad's first appearance in an anthology, and it is one of his scarcest works of this kind. Binding a little worn and soiled; some light foxing; very good copy.         An original watercolour painting - possibly of a sparsely settled Adelaide seaside suburb - unsigned, but the artist is identified on the verso as H.P. Gill

The watercolour is on paper (135 x 227 mm), unmounted as produced; apart from a tiny light crease to one top corner, it is in fine condition. It is undated, but probably circa 1900. Harry Pelling Gill (1855-1916), art curator and teacher, was born in England; he trained and taught at the Royal College of Art from 1877-82. He was then appointed master of the school of design in Adelaide. 'He arrived in Adelaide in September and organized elementary and advanced classes, instruction in crafts, teaching of drawing and correspondence lessons. He also gave instruction to trainee teachers.... In 1889 Gill became director for technical art ... He published books on geometrical drawing and design ... In 1892 he was appointed honorary curator of the art gallery and, following the resignation in December of Louis Tannert as master of the school of painting, Gill assumed control of all the board's art teaching activities.... Gill had shown promise as an artist and hoped to win repute in Australia. However, teaching and administration had left little time for his painting. His rare decorative and aesthetic compositions, and also his landscapes, are painted with meticulous detail without sacrificing the overall unified effect. This is a quality passed on to some of his students, including the Hambidge sisters and Gustave Barnes in his early work. Gill's landscapes and some of his interiors show that he was interested in the accurate rendering of light - a rare quality in Adelaide before 1900' (Australian Dictionary of Biography). This charming painting - of coastal tea tree (or similar) flourishing prominently against a backdrop of a few substantial dwellings scattered along a line in the relatively featureless landscape - certainly satisfies these criteria.

        Los Caprichos.]

[Madrid: Calgografia der Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, between 1881 and 1900] - Folio (353 x 244 mm). Twentieth-century brown straight-grained skiver, title gilt directly to the spine, low bands, foliate devices to the compartments, two gilt panels to the boards, marbled endpapers. Brown cloth slipcase. b Bookplate (designed by Reynolds Stone) of Jonathan and Phillida Gili. A little rubbed at the extremities, varying degrees of general foxing (a little heavier in places but largely confined to the margins), a very good copy. 80 etched and aquatint plates printed in sepia on thick paper. This copy is of either the fifth or sixth edition, the bevelled plates measuring 353 x 244 mm and printed on thick wove paper. For all editions from the fourth (1878) through to the twelfth (1937) the plates were bevelled. The following editions can be dismissed: the plates of the fourth measure only 310 x 230 mm; the seventh was printed in blue ink; the eighth on "very fine, thin, smooth, wove paper"; the plates of the ninth measure only 345 x 240 mm; the tenth, eleventh and twelfth were printed on either laid paper or varieties of japon. Fifth: printed on "thick, absorbent, wove paper" in three sizes: 365 x 260 mm., an issue which is smaller than ours (330 x 240 mm.) and a "deluxe edition" measuring 425 x 300 mm. "Sepia or very rich sepia and black inks The edition was limited to 210" (Harris). Sixth: printed on "strong, absorbent, wove paper" in two sizes: 340 x 240 mm. ("ordinary edition") and 395 x 270 mm. ("deluxe edition"). "Dark umber ink The edition was limited to 230" (Harris). It seems most likely that our copy was trimmed down by the binder from either the fifth edition with sheets sized 365 x 260 mm. or the sixth deluxe edition. (It is possible that it is one of the fifth deluxe edition printings but this would mean rather drastic trimming.) Identifying the exact edition is problematic. Various pencillings on the endpapers of this copy show that previous owners have speculated as to this being either the fifth or sixth edition. A note in a contemporary Spanish hand on a leaf preceding the plates explains that these prints were taken from the plates held at the National School of Graphic Arts in Madrid. What we can be certain is that this is a copy dating from the late nineteenth century, printed in dark umber inks on good wove paper with generous margins and utilizing the original plates – most likely from the sixth deluxe edition, which Harris describes as "slightly better than the fifth; the impressions are more brilliant". "Los Caprichos, which are the earliest of Goya's large series of engravings and were published by Goya himself in 1799, have enjoyed greater popularity than the later and more moving series of Los Desastres de la Guerra. This may partly be because the Desastres were first published posthumously in 1863, by which time the Caprichos had already gained fame, but a more basic reason is probably that the subjects of the Caprichos invite imaginative interpretations which those of the Desastres do not admit, and their satire is easier to enjoy than the horrific war and famine scenes of the later series" (Harris I p. 95). "Los Caprichos, or The Caprices are a bizarre, absorbing and sometimes disturbing series of eighty etchings and aquatints depicting a wide variety of subjects including the clergy, prostitutes and witches. The images are a blend of two techniques: etching and aquatint. In particular Goya's use of the aquatint process, lending the images stark contrast between dark and light, provides a distinctly mysterious and dark quality to the work. The title, Los Caprichos, suggests invention and fantasy. Variants of the word 'Caprice' have been used by many artists from classical antiquity right through to the humanist renaissance in Fifteenth Century Italy. Goya's use of the term is a nod to the followers of this tradition: Botticelli and Dürer and the later Tiepolo and Piranesi. It denotes the promotion of the artist's imagination over reality; invention over mere representation. Howe
