Madame Bovary.

Paris: Bibliothèque-Charpentier, 1900. James Joyce's personal copy of Flaubert's novel of "provincial manners," one of the most controversial and influential novels of the nineteenth century, first serialized in La Revue de Paris in 1856. In the character of Emma Bovary, an unhappy wife ruined by her romantic aspirations, Flaubert projected his own struggle with the challenges of realism: "Madame Bovary, c'est moi." Flaubert was, in fact, prosecuted for his heroine's adultery, but was acquitted of obscenity. The censorship trial made the novel a bestseller when it appeared in book form early in 1857. This paperback édition définitive, which includes transcripts of the Bovary trial, bears Joyce's early ownership signature, dated June 1901, when he was nineteen. Flaubert's writing was a lifelong touchstone for Joyce. In "The Day of the Rabblement," an essay published later in 1901, Joyce cites Madame Bovary as the starting point of modern literary realism, and the Bovary trial would strikingly prefigure the legal challenges to Joyce's Ulysses, another work featuring a complicated, unapologetically unfaithful wife. Irish critic Ernest Boyd (1887-1946), editor of Ireland's Literary Renaissance and former owner of this copy, drew a direct parallel between the Bovary trial and the American trial of Ulysses. Boyd noted that the French court was capable of considering Flaubert's novel as a complete work of literature, with intention and context, "not as if it were a dirty postal card," in contrast to "the ineffable buffoonery and low philistinism of similar trials in America," which resulted in a decade-long ban on Ulysses (The Dial, April 1921). When the American ban was finally overturned in 1933, Joyce wrote to T.S. Eliot that Random House was publishing Judge Woolsey's decision as part of the first American edition: "I suppose like the édition définitive of Madame Bovary." Provenance: James Joyce to unknown Irish owner(s) to Ernest Boyd to Thomas Quinn Curtis to Alexander Neubauer. The modern binding dates from Boyd's ownership; he has signed across the repaired front free endpaper. This copy is a primary source for Scarlett Baron's Strandentwining Cable: Joyce, Flaubert, and Intertextuality (OUP, 2012). A great association. Full modern red buckram lettered in gilt, yellow publisher's wrappers bound in. Ink signature of James Joyce to top corner of front wrapper; signatures of James Joyce (dated June 1901) and Ernest Boyd to front free endpaper. Bookplate of Alexander Neubauer to front pastedown. Front wrapper chipped and mounted, early repairs to front free endpaper and rear wrapper, text block embrowned.

Klaus Bölling (1928-2014 Publizist), Mildred Scheel (1932-1985), Franz Burda (1903-1985 Verleger), Heinrich Harrer (1912-2006 Bergsteiger), Johannes Heesters (1903-2011 Schauspieler), Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934 General), Reinhard Mohn (1921-2009 Verleger), Henri Nannen (1913-1996 Verleger), Sigi Sommer (1914-1996 Schriftsteller) Axel Springer (1912-1985 Verleger), Egon Bahr (1922-2015 Politiker), Josef Ertl (1925-2000 Politiker), Georg Leber (1920-2012 Politiker), Annemarie Renger (1919-2008 Politikerin), Franz Josef Strauß (1915-1988 Politiker) und Kurt Waldheim (1918-2007 Österreicher). Beispiele: Brief an Franz Josef Strauß vom 18. An Marianne Strauß 27. Sept. An Henry Kissinger 2. An Willy Brandt 9. An Willy Brandt 12. An Fidel Castro 18. An Helmut Schmidt 5.

n.d. (ca. 1900), S.l. (France) - 8vo. 72 pp. numbered in pencil in upper corners, of which 3 numbered pages are blank; front and back of the textblock are padded with unnumbered blank leaves. Contemporary French "repousse" binding in the Art Nouveau style: large interlocking leaves and flowers, with gilt fillets; comb-marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, smooth spine unlettered. A volume of great charm and considerable bibliographical interest: the binding was executed in the "Cuir-cisele" (cut leather) manner. Cuir-cisele is a decorative technique in which a knife is used to cut a low relief design into the leather binding. The positive forms are left intact while the negative space has been cut away. "On the leather surface we see a design, sometimes simple, sometimes elaborate, which is not impressed on it with stamps or dies, but worked freely and directly by the craftsman by means of a simple pointed tool, blunt or sharp. In this simple way he either cut, scratcched, or merely engraved by pressure the outline of his decorative design; very often he would then stipple the background with some other simple tool, so as to make the contours of his design stand out more clearly" (SOURCE: E.P. Goldschmidt, "Some Cuir-Cisele Bookbindings in English Libraries" in: The Library, Fourth Series, Vol. XIII, no. 4, March, 1933, p. 337). The text is likewise curious: the pages were created by means of lithography, and colored throughout with watercolor by an expert hand. No title-page was ever bound herein. The entire production seems to have been a very personal one. In excellent state, suitable for exhibition and study. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Degeneration.

13.5 cm x 22 cm. IX, 560 pages. Original Hardcover. Very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear, for example very slight rubbing at top of spine. "Degeneration is one of the most important documents of the fin de siècle, the years between the 1880s and 1900 when the robust views of the nineteenth century clashed with the heightened sensibilities of a searching and disillusioned generation. . . . [It] is a mirror of conflicting attitudes which are, in fact, contemporary with our present cultural dilemmas. But culture itself always reflects the state of society. Max Nordau presents us with a searchlight whose beams reflect the kind of world [we] have made for [ourselves.]"George L. Mosse in his introduction to the 1968 edition. (Amazon) Max Simon Nordau (born Simon Maximilian Südfeld July 29, 1849 January 23, 1923), was a Zionist leader, physician, author, and social critic. He was a co-founder of the World Zionist Organization together with Theodor Herzl, and president or vice president of several Zionist congresses. As a social critic, he wrote a number of controversial books, including The Conventional Lies of Our Civilisation (1883), Degeneration (1892), and Paradoxes (1896). Although not his most popular or successful work whilst alive, Degeneration is the book most often remembered and cited today. (Wikipedia)

        Concerning Children

Boston: Small, Maynard & Company(1900). 1st edition/1st printing. 1 of only 2000 copies printed. This author was quite well-known in her day as a feminist and an activist for women's rights, and as an author writing about women's issues. She was the grandniece of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her best known story, "The Yellow Wallpaper," is about a woman who suffers from a mental breakdown due to the birth of her child and the prescription of isolated bed rest from her physician husband, which paralleled some of the events of her own life. She co-edited the Pacific Coast Women's Press with socialist Helen Campell. When she turned to lecturing, she became well known for her discussion on women's topics. With the book "Woman and Economics" in 1898, she emerged as a spokesperson on such topics as women's perspectives on work and family. She co-founded the Women's Peace Party in 1915 with activist Jane Addams. Bound in dark blue cloth with gilt printing and gilt & green decorations. The half-title page is the first page and there is a very narrow paper-only slit at the gutter; however, the book is very firmly bound and very tight. It is straight, clean, and has no handwriting or damage to the text paper. There are small areas of wear to the binding cloth at the tips of the corners and spine ends, a trace of rubbing to the "N" and "C" in 'Concerning" on the front panel, and the cloth and printing of the spine is a bit dulled. A very scarce book, and really in quite excellent condition. ; 7-1/2" x 4-7/8"; 298 pages, 49, 43, 60, VG+/NONE

"Syracuse, N.Y." stamp on bottom of the box. Label is partially perished, a few modest cracks in the wood, and lacks the presumed wooden lid. The company's packaging featured the Twins beginning in 1890, and their image was used in the brand for approximately 60 years.       August 2, 1900. Manuscript Document Signed, <b><i>"Vittorio Emanuele"</i></b>, &nbsp;in Italian with a full translation, 1p, &nbsp;on &nbsp;9" x 13.25" black-bordered paper. In full: <b>"By the grace of God and by the will of the Nation King of Italy, to the President of the Republic of Bolivia, greetings. Dearest and good friend, with the soul grieving with pain, We announce to you that on July 29th of this year, died in Monza, victim of a wicked attack, our most beloved father, His Majesty the King Umberto I. The incomparable virtues of the noble deceased and the friendship that your Republic always shared with him, assure us of your participate in the pain for this immense tragedy that is breaking our heart. As We are called to succeed my beloved father, it is our intention to tie even further the friendly relationship that happily exists between Italy and Bolivia. With such feelings, We pray God that He may keep You under His Patronage, our dearest and good friend... (signed) Victor Emmanuele".</b>&nbsp;<div><br></div><div>Victor Emmanuel III, 1869–1947, king of Italy (1900–1946), emperor of Ethiopia (1936–43), king of Albania (1939–43), son and successor of Umberto I. In 1896 he married Princess Helena of Montenegro. Though involved with Germany and Austria-Hungary in the Triple Alliance, he sought cordial relations with France and Great Britain. He favored the war of 1911–12 against Turkey, thus acquiring Libya. Though first advocating neutrality, he finally joined (1915) the Allies in World War I. He was unable to handle the confused internal situation of Italy after the war, refused to oppose the Fascist march on Rome, and asked Mussolini to form a government.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Under the Fascist regime he was king in name only, but Mussolini's conquests added to his list of titles. During World War II, when the Fascist grand council voted against continued support of Mussolini, the king dismissed the dictator, placed him under arrest, and named Pietro Badoglio premier. German troops occupied Rome after Italy surrendered to the Allies, and Victor Emmanuel fled. Unpopular because of his long association with Mussolini, he was obliged to transmit his royal prerogatives to his son, Umberto II, in whose favor he abdicated in 1946. He died in exile in Egypt.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Umberto I was the son of Vittorio Emanuele II and of Adelaide, archduchess of Austria, Umberto was born at Turin, capital of the kingdom of Sardinia, on 14 March 1844. Compared with the reigns of his grandfather, Charles Albert of Savoy, and of his father, Victor Emmanuel, the reign of Umberto proved tranquil. The claims of King Umberto upon popular gratitude and affection were enhanced by his extraordinary munificence, which was not merely displayed on public occasions, but directed to the relief of innumerable private wants into which he had made personal inquiry. The regard in which he was universally held was abundantly demonstrated on the occasion of the unsuccessful attempt upon his life made by the anarchist Acciarito near Rome on April 22, 1897, and still more after his tragic assassination at Monza by the anarchist Gaetano Bresci on the evening of 29 July 1900. Good-humoured, active, tender-hearted, somewhat fatalistic, but, above all, generous, he was spontaneously called "Umberto the Good". He was buried in the Pantheon in Rome, by the side of Victor Emmanuel II, on August 9, 1900. </div>

        The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Hartford, CT: The American Publishing Company, 1900. Original cloth. Near Fine. True Williams. A surprisingly crisp, well-preserved copy of this early, 1900 reprint of Twain's immortal classic, which was first published (by the same publisher) in 1876. This copy, identical to the first edition in design and appearance, is tight and very solid in its deep-blue cloth, with bright gilt-design and crisp, completely unflecked gilt-titling along the front panel and spine. Minor bumping to the upper tips, light soiling along the rear panel and discrete former owner stamp at the dedication page. Still though, very presentable and, graded conservatively, a genuinely Near Fine copy. Octavo, the wonderful True Williams illustrations thruout are all pristine.

The Vision; or Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise

New York: Thomas Y Crowell & Co, 1900. Fine/Fine. Translated by the Rev. H. F. Cary, AM. Octavo: [iv] vii-x, [1], 452; with frontispiece and 23 original plates. Includes Cary's 1814 Preface and A Chronological View of the Age of Dante, in addition to Cary's notes on the text. Fine copy with bright gilt and tight page block. Housed in original publisher's green cloth box and dust jacket; original publisher's gray cloth binding, with blind stamping and gilt lettering to spine and front cover; gilt to page edges. An attractive copy of Dante's Divine Comedy, with the 1814 translation by H.F. Cary and illustrations by Gustave Dore. One of the world's great masterpieces and a foundational text of Italian literature. The Comedy took over a decade for Dante to write, he worked on it in exile, having been sent out of his native Florence in 1302, when his political faction fell out of favor. The work's genius was quickly recognized -- Boccaccio himself was so obsessed with it that he was responsible for adding the prefix "Divine." With Cary's translation to English blank verse, the poetry of Dante's original work became accessible in England and America for the first time, influencing countless more authors, from Ezra Pound and James Joyce, to Jorge Luis Borges. "Of all the translators of Dante...Mr. Cary is the most successful; and we cannot but consider his work as a great acquisition to the English reader. It is executed with a fidelity almost without example" (Friedrich). Includes attractive plates from Gustave Dore, a premier illustrator of the period who brought Dante's work visually to life. Report of the Dante Society, 39. The American Alighieri, 70-73. Catalogue of English Books, 200. Dante's Fame Abroad, 284. Fine in Fine dust jacket.
