Jack in the Pulpit Preaches To-day.

      - N.d., circa 1900. 13 leaves of card stock onto which the once popular poem by Clara Smith was written by hand in a calligraphic script and watercolor decoration ornaments four leaves in addition to the front cover. The artist signed the watercolors with BAMcLeod. While the sweet, doggerilish verse may not suit modern tastes -- it is bound to be viewed with the same condescension as the Joyce Kilmer poem, "Trees" -- it did inspire commercial book illustrators, and this manuscript version more than holds its own with published versions, and the warmth of the watercolors, unmediated by a printing press, immeasurably enhances the visual pleasure these vignettes of the natural world are bound to impart. While we know nothing of BA McLeod, strangely the comparative anonymity of the artist adds an element of interest and mystery to this as a document. The production is bound amateurishly, but firmly, with a strip of parchment, and holes were punched into the bound margin presumably to allow the book to be housed in a looseleaf binder.         Monterey County Cattle Association Broadside

Salinas Index Print, N.D. Salinas Index Print. N.D.. Broadside. Linen broadside with black text and depicts 51 cattle brands. Broadside measures 10" x 11 ¾" and is in very good condition. At one time folded twice, light soiling on verso marks where folded; three out of the four sides have minor fraying; bottom left quarter of broadside has light foxing or soiling; corners have light foxing. Broadside reads: "$200 Reward! The above reward will be paid for such information as will to the conviction of any person or persons guilty of stealing stock belonging to any of the following named members of the Monterey County Cattle Association." Underneath that statement are names of association members with their brand illustrated next to name. It was printed by Salinas Index Print, which could be related to the Salinas Weekly Index newspaper, circa 1900. The financial base in the Salinas Valley of California was, and still is, agriculture, and "mixed grain farming and stock raising prevailed in the ranches of southern Monterey County" in the late 19th century (Monterey County Historical Society). Fifty-four names of stock-raisers are printed the broadside, some prominent names of early cattle ranching families and businessmen included are Bardin, Carr, Graves and Abbott. J. D. Carr, W. B. Ford and H. Corey were recorded by the California State Board of Agricultural to have participated in the Monterey County Fair Association (1878). Not only are broadsides rarely made of linen, this piece also contains illustrated brands and documents cattle rustling in California. An unusual and handsome find. The long legacy of farming and ranching associated with Monterey County makes this broadside a valuable piece of California history. .

        Anti Horse Thief Association Photograph

Springfield, MO: Duncan Studio. Photograph of the Anti Horse Thief Association mounted on gray cardboard. Photograph measures 8" x 10", not including mount, and is in very good condition. Photo has minor chipping to bottom right corner, light ink markings on left edge. Image is quite detailed and clear. Dated between 1900 and 1910. The photograph was published by A.B. Duncan of Duncan Studio in Springfield, Missouri. This image depicts the Nichols Sub Order, No. 300, of the Anti Horse Thief Association gathered together in the Public Square of Springfield, Missouri. Some buildings are clearly signed such as Weaver Shoes, Nathan Clothing Co and Ozark Land Co. which help to identify the location. When this scene was photographed the popular forms of transportation were carriages and horses, with only one automobile depicted. The form of transportation and the number of stars on the American flag (45) help to distinguish a date for the photo. The men of the Anti Horse Thief Association are almost all on horseback, many having a badge or ribbon pinned to their jackets and most staring at the camera. The Anti Horse Thief Association was organized in Clark County, Missouri in 1854; its principle goal was the protection of property, especially horses, at a time when horses were frequently stolen by thieves. The Anti Horse Thief Association was not a vigilante group, preferring to catch the criminals and hand them over to the court system. The Association quickly grew and in 1916 had over forty thousand members in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado, and South Dakota. The emblem of the Association, the horseshoe, represents Humanity, Charity and Justice. A great photograph of a respected league of crime fighters. .

Sister Carrie, The Financier, and the Titan [three first editions]

New York: Doubleday, Page, 1900; Harper, 1912; John Lane, 1914 - Original dark red cloth. Minute touchups to foot of spine, light fading to part of upper board. Very good. Cloth case FIRST EDITION of Dreiser’s first and most important book. Sister Carrie is “a powerful account of a young working girl’s rise to the ‘tinsel and shine’ of worldly success, and of the slow decline of her lover and protector Hurstwood. It was withheld from circulation by its publishers, who were apprehensive about Dreiser’s frank and amoral treatment of Carrie’s sexuality and ambition” (Drabble). After Harper and Brothers declined to print the novel, Dreiser approached Doubleday, Page, and Co., which had published another naturalist novel, Frank Norris’s McTeague. Norris, an advisor for Doubleday, enthusiastically supported the publication of Sister Carrie. He later called it “the best novel I had read in M.S. since I had been reading for the firm.” Based on Norris’s praise, Walter Hines Page promised Dreiser that his firm would publish it. However, after reading the manuscript, Frank Doubleday objected that the novel was sordid. Dreiser insisted that Doubleday, Page was legally obligated to publish the book, so the firm proceeded, printing a mere 1000 copies and refusing to promote it. Only 456 copies were sold, and Dreiser received only $68.40 in royalties. This is a handsome copy, without cracked hinges and browned spine that typically plague this book. The only brighter copy we have seen in recent years, a copy with the spine ends recolored, was priced at $30,000. Modern Library 100 Best English-Language Novels of the 20th Century 33. [with] The Greatest American Business Novel DREISER, THEODORE. The Financier. New York: Harper, 1912. Original cloth and dust jacket. Some rubbing and edge wear to dust jacket with slight loss, long closed split to upper joint of dj. Spine slightly darkened. A very good copy, rare in this condition in dust jacket. FIRST EDITION. “The historic scope of his theme, the monumental architecture of his story, and the exhaustiveness of his documentation make The Financier the greatest business novel written in America of its time—and probably of all time” (Lingeman). This is the first book in Dreiser’s Trilogy of Desire, comprising The Financier (1912), The Titan (1914), and The Stoic (1947, posthumous). The novels tell the story of the financier Frank Cowperwood, who is based on the life of American businessman Charles Tyson Yerkes. Cowperwood is a Philadelphia streetcar magnate, investor, and securities manipulator in the Gilded Age. “It is Dreiser’s constant probing of the intertwined needs for money, art, glory, sex, and so much else that makes ‘The Financier’ the greatest of all American business novels” (Wall Street Journal, 2012). Provenance: contemporary signature of Kate Lang on front pastedown. [with] The Titan DREISER, THEODORE. The Titan. New York: John Lane, (1914). Original cloth and dust jacket. Slight chipping to dust jacket, one small repair to verso. An excellent copy. FIRST EDITION. The Titan is the second book in Dreiser’s Trilogy of Desire, comprising The Financier (1912), The Titan (1914), and The Stoic (1947, posthumous). The novels tell the story of the financier Frank Cowperwood, who is based on the life of American businessman Charles Tyson Yerkes. Cowperwood is a Philadelphia streetcar magnate, investor, and securities manipulator in the Gilded Age. When Dreiser’s publisher, Harper and Brothers, declined to publish the work because of Cowperwood’s promiscuous sexuality, Dreiser moved to John Lane. “Although the trilogy is based on the life of Yerkes, readers have often identified the drive and aspirations of Cowperwood with Dreiser himself—particularly in the financier’s love of beauty, his sexual appetites, and his will to power” (ANB). Very scarce in a collectible dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Hand Tinted Photograph [Tintype]

c.1900. Full plate tintype photograph (7 1/4" X 10") of William and (his wife) Susannah Carney, the Sergeant wearing his Medal of Honor. Scratched on the back: "Sgt. Wm. Carney, 54th Mass. Vols. 1900" (the date might be 1901). Left side corners clipped, flaking of the emulsion around, and to, his right leg and shoes, surface craquelure, the tin wavy, else very good condition, the image fantastic. Rare. The Emancipation Proclamation (Jan. 1, 1863) officially authorized recruiting black soldiers for the first time in the Civil War, so in March, William Harvey Carney joined the, all black, 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, commanded by 26 year-old Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Because of Carney's education and leadership skills (he had studied to be a Preacher) he quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant. In July, the 54th Massachusetts was sent to James Island, South Carolina, where, on July 18, Shaw offered to lead the charge against Fort Wagner (the attack on Fort Wagner was depicted in the film Glory). During the battle Shaw and his flag bearer were pinned down beneath the parapet of the fort. Trying to rally his men forward, Shaw and the flag bearer fell, both mortally wounded. In that moment, Carney became both sides of his African-American hyphen. He seized the colors, prevented the flag from touching the ground, struggled up the parapet and, though wounded in the legs, chest, and arm, planted the colors at the top of the rampart. Despite his wounds and the heavy gunfire around him, Carney was able to keep the flag aloft, though he, and the rest of the 54th Massachusetts, remained pinned down until reinforcements arrived and the shredded unit was able to withdraw. Struggling back to Union lines while still carrying the colors, Carney collapsed saying: "Boys, the old flag never touched the ground." He spent the next 11 months recuperating, but was never fit again, and because of his wounds, he received an honorable disability discharge in June, 1864. Carney's Medal of Honor citation reads: "When the color sergeant was shot down, this soldier grasped the flag, led the way to the parapet, and planted the colors thereon. When the troops fell back he brought off the flag, under a fierce fire in which he was twice severely wounded." Most Civil War Congressional Medals of Honor were awarded decades after the action, and some African-Americans received theirs before Carney, but his was for the earliest battle and he is unanimously acclaimed (Google away) as, "the first African-American Medal of Honor winner." The National Archives puts it plainly: "Sergeant William Carney of New Bedford, MA, became the first African-American awarded the Medal of Honor for most distinguished gallantry in action..." And Historynet.com states it just as clearly: "William H. Carney, transcended good to become great, and was the first black U. S. soldier to earn the Medal of Honor.".

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Photo Album]: New York Hunting and Fish Club

Pleaseant Lake, New York, 1900. Very Good. Quarto. Measuring 10" x 12". Leatherette papercovered boards with "Photographs" in gild on the front. Approximately 100pp. The album contains 220 gelatin silver photographs, most 3" x 4", tipped in and with about a third of the album pages empty. About very good with heavy wear at the edges with fraying, tears and some loss at the corner; interior photographs are generally fine. The album show a group of 20 or so well-to-do men and women engaged in a variety of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, sailing, canoeing, and berry picking. The album begins with views of the local railroad station and many images of the group's large house in the woods (possibly a boarding house), along with log cabins, out buildings, a wood-planked path to the lake, the lake house, and dock. The surrounding forest is heavily featured. There are a number of interesting group photos showing members posing on rocks and logs or relaxing at their house and campsites. Many photos show successful hunters and fishermen/women proudly posing with their trophies and engaged in food preparation. Photos of the small train station show signs that read "Pleasant Lake" and one of the loosened photos of a fisherman has a Lausinburg, New York address on the reverse, confirming the images were taken in the Empire State. An attractive visual record of turn-of-the century outdoor leisure activities of wealthy New Yorkers.

A great photograph of a respected league of crime fighters. .

        Account book].

Northamptonshire [England]. 1900-1931 - The personal account book of an English provincial bobby posted in Northamptonshire (variously at Northampton, Kettering, Oundle, Paulerspury, Daventry, East Haddon and Naseby) recording every arrest he made in the course of a 32-year career.Despite early stints in Northampton and Kettering, Clarke's experience was based in smaller villages and his notebook is a valuable fascinating account of English rural life at the opening of the twentieth century. The crimes here records include drunkenness, use of obscene language, vagrancy, poaching, gambling, begging, petty theft, domestic abuse, animal cruelty, unlicensed use of firearms, bicycle and motoring offences and playing football on the highway. Clarke was an assiduous recorder, itemising every arrest and its outcome, then, at the end of the year making a final reckoning. So, for the year 1911 he sums up, in red ink: '24 proceeded against. 15 fined £10,18.0. 5 sent to prison 16 months 21 days. 1 dismissed. 2 warned of reward. I bound over for 12 months'. The hundreds of arrests made over the course of a career of some 32 years is totalled in pencil at the end: '32 years service, Cases 523, Fines £359.15.5. Sent to Prison 53 years 6 months 0 weeks 5 days. Pay £5272. 5 [shillings]. 7 1/2 [pence].One interesting development is, of course, the rise of motor transport and its attendant offences. In the early years Clarke apprehends very few motorists (but rather more cyclists), while towards 1930 the vast majority of his successes (and revenue) involve reckless and speeding drivers from all over England.A few excerpts give a flavour:'October 30th [1900] Danile Bailey John Abrahams Edward Smith & Jim Mallard charged with stealing Fruit valued 5/- the property of Jethro Johnson Fine and Costs 7/6 each.''Dec 16th [1900] Frederick Albert Coe, scholar, age 13 Abbey St Daventry Charged with stealing a Dutch Cheese Valued 2/6 the property of Messrs Bayley Brothers & was ordered to receive 6 strokes with Birch'.'March 3d [1901] Richard Clarke Cycle Maker Coventry charged with being a wandering Lunatic at Daventry committed to Berrywood Asylum'.'19 August [1909] Fred[eric]k Juggings . Commercial Traveller charged with Indecently assaulting Mollie Simpson age 5 yrs at Weston Favell.         Junger Löwe, nach Schmetterlingen haschend. Originale japanische Tuschezeichnung.

ca. 1900.
