Set of 6 Golf Clubs plus 2 Books from the Estate of Eben Byers (Harper's Official Golf Guide, 1901 / Captain's Dinner to the Champions WPGA 1916, Allegheny Country Club)

(Pittsburgh): Harper Brothers. 1900s. Hardcover. Near Fine. Set of 6 golf clubs and 2 books from the estate of Eben Byers (1880-1932), the winner of the 1906 US Amateur who died after 4 years of ingesting a radium infused medicine. The golf clubs, 5 mashies (long irons, as they're known today) and one niblick (short iron, with the loft of a modern 9-iron or pitching wedge), with hickory shafts, leather wrapped grips and each stamped with his initials --EMB. One of the clubs is not stamped with a manufacturer's name and is likely from the late 1890's. The other 5 are stamped, and appear to date between 1900 and 1920. Strong shafts. Leather wraps starting to deteriorate. Also includes 2 golf books: 1. Harper's Official Golf Guide, 1901. Hardcover. Spine expertly restored in the style of the original, otherwise Near Fine. With Byers' ownership signature on the first page. -- 2. Souvenir for Captain's Dinner to the Champions WPGA 1916, Allegheny Country Club. Not marked. Byers listed as an attendee and member of the Allegheny Country Club team. Byers was a Pittsburgh-born socialite who was educated in New England. He was runner up in the Amateur in 1902 and 1903, and finally won the championship in 1906 at the now defunct Englewood Golf Club. He is best known for his publicized death from cancer as a result of drinking over 1,000 bottles of Radithor, a concoction of radium diluted in water patented by Harvard dropout and known huckster William Bailey. He is buried in a lead coffin in Pittsburgh, and his death inspired one of the great obituary headlines, 'The Radium Water Worked Fine until His Jaw Came Off.' 6 golf clubs and 2 books from the estate of Eben McBurney Byers.       London: Longmans, Green, and Company, 1900. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a collector-worthy copy of the British first edition, first printing, first state of Churchill's third book and only novel. A very young Churchill was exuberant about publication at the time. Even though Savrola was his third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. He would later make deprecating comments about the book. In his 1930 autobiography he wrote, "I have consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it [Savrola]." However, his mixed feelings about his only novel did not keep Churchill from writing a foreword to a new edition in 1956, in which he said: "The preface to the first edition in 1900 submitted the book 'with considerable trepidation to the judgment or the clemency of the public.' The intervening fifty-five years have somewhat dulled though certainly not changed my sentiments on this point." Irrespective of Churchill's feelings about his book, this novel certainly provides an interesting insight into the early perspective and sentiment of the then very young Churchill. The British first edition was issued from American plates, with only 1,500 copies of the first printing published on 12 February 1900. It is bound quite differently from its U.S. counterpart, in green cloth with Churchill's facsimile signature in gilt on the front cover. The British first edition proved less durable than its U.S. counterpart, and is most often seen significantly worn and spotted. There are two states of the first printing, the second state distinguished by a title page cancellans with a blank verso. Here is the British first edition, first printing, first state, a near fine copy considering the inherent fragility of the edition and the significantly flawed condition of most surviving copies. First state is confirmed by an integral title page with the print history on the title page verso. The binding remains notably clean and square ?- a rarity, since nearly every copy we encounter has a forward lean. We note no toning of the green cloth and vivid gilt on both front cover and spine. Slight wear to extremities and a hint of wrinkling to the spine cloth are all trivial for this edition. The contents remain bright with a crisp feel, though the spotting endemic to this edition is present throughout. The original black endpapers are intact. We find a Newcastle upon Tyne bookseller sticker affixed to the lower front pastedown and a single previous ownership name ?- undated but clearly contemporary given the visible age and nature of the ink ?- on the front free endpaper. The lovely binding is protected with a removable, clear mylar cover. Not a perfect copy to be sure, but compellingly good for the edition and quite scarce thus; we seldom encounter better examples.         The Boer War and First World War Photo Albums of Edith H. Hordley, British Nursing Sister and Principal Matron of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service

[South Africa; France; Egypt]. (1900 - 1925). An archive of photo albums, post cards and ephemera, compiled by Edith H. Hordley a prominent British Nursing Sister who served in the Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service Reserve during the Second Boer War from 1900-1902 and later joined Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) in 1903. During the First World War she attained the rank of Principal Matron and was awarded the Royal Red Cross (First Class) in 1916.The collection contains well over 300 snap shot images from 1900-02 documenting Hordley's work and associated travels in South Africa, including images of Nursing Sisters, soldiers and officers, and South Africans (including refugees, laborers, and tribal members), at field hospitals, camps, and towns in and around Pretoria, Bloemfonsein, and elsewhere in the Transvaal; around Cape Town, Queenstown, and elsewhere in Cape Colony. Additionally included are about 75 real photo and color printed post cards collected by Hordley during the First World War when she was stationed with the British Expeditionary Force in northern France, and an additional album of over 100 prints documenting her work after the War at a military hospital in Alexandria, Egypt.Edith Helen Hordley (c.1872-1953), a pupil at the Orme Girls' School from 1882 to 1890, sailed to South Africa on July 2, 1900 and received the Queen's Medal and King's Medal for her service there during the war. We know from evidence in the albums that she worked at an Imperial Yeomanry Branch Hospital in the Transvaal and at a military hospital in Wynberg, Cape Town. It is likely that it was in South Africa that she met Emma Maud McCarthy, who later became the most celebrated leader of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service when she served as Hordley's Matron-in-Chief with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders during the First World War. Both women joined the QAIMNS immediately after its founding in 1902 and both were lifelong friends. McCarthy frequently refers to Hordley throughout her War Diary from 1914-1919, and for about six months in 1917 Hordley served as Acting Matron-in-Chief when McCarthy was taken ill with appendicitis. An historically important and compelling personal archive of a leading member of the British military nursing service, dating from a time when the military actively discouraged women from documenting their wartime services, and also destroyed many official records. A detailed list is available upon request. .

Coventry: Stevengraph Works, [1900].... Coventry: Stevengraph Works, [1900]. A stunning silver & black weave. Image: 10" x 8-1/2". Overall: 11-3/4" x 10". No manufacturer's mount. In the mid-19th C, the town of Coventry, England, was the centre of a ribbon weaving industry. Thomas Stevens, a local weaver, adapted Jacquard looms to weave colourful pictures from silk. By 1862, Stevens could produce four different designs. Business boomed and Stevens acquired two larger factories; by 1875 he was calling his product the "Stevengraph", named after himself. He exhibited internationally in America, France & Holland, winning some 30 medals & diplomas. In 1878 Stevens moved to London and began to mount his Stevengraphs as framed pictures - by the late 1880s Stevens had over 900 different designs. [Wiki]. This Stevengraph [by Stevens?] celebrates the 1900 Paris World Fair, depicting the US Pavilion, which was designed by Charles Coolidge. This an unusually large size Stevengraph, much larger than the bookmark format [et al] usually seen. Not in LeVan Baker catalogue, nor found in Godden's work, Stevengraphs and Other Victorian Silk Pictures. Tape (?) discolorations at cloth margins, in one spot [top center] just touching the outer edge of the primary image, otherwise confined to margins....

n.p. (France), n.d. (ca. 1900). n.p. (France) n.d. (ca. 1900). A colorful collection of chromolithographed seed packets, evidently prepared by a horticultural printer for use as a sample album. An attractive feature of these packets is that in addition to the color close-ups of the flower in bloom on one side of the packet, in most cases the reverse side shows the entire plant growing in the ground so that one can see the general growth pattern and the texture of the leaves. The reverse also contains a printed blank space for printing the name of the seedsman or nursery that would sell the seeds. The flowers are usually named in various combinations of Botanical Latin, English, and French. All packets are numbered beginning with 1 and ending with 997 and, in some cases the numbers are written in pen. Occasionally some numbers are skipped, appear out of order , or are re-numbered, but there are usually 12 packets mounted on a page unless slightly larger packets reduce the total number presented. In all, there are 684 packets. Stapled album (30 x 23 cm.); 58 unnumbered pp. bound on stubs, with each page showing 11 or 12 packets (except the last page, with only 3 packets), which are tipped into printed lined compartments. Plainly bound in paper covered boards, minor soiling, with cloth spine; spine cloth slit along upper edge and lightly chipped at ends; internally very good with just some occasional white spots.

        Tales of Space and Time

London & New York: Harpers & Brothers Publishers,, 1900. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in brown, front cover lettered in gilt and blocked in brown. Housed in a brown quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine slightly soiled and rubbed, free endpapers a little browned, an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy to Henry James, inscribed by the author at publication on the first blank, "Henry James from H G. Wells". Beneath the inscription Wells has sketched a drawing of a club-wielding cave man—probably a reference to the third story in this collection, "A Story of the Stone Age". Though dated 1900, the book was actually published in November 1899 and James wrote to Wells on 20 November 1899 to thank him for the gift of this and another book: "These new tales I have already absorbed and, to the best of my powers, assimilated. You fill me with wonder and admiration" (Edel and Ray 62). Henry James and H. G. Wells appear to have met in 1898. Three years earlier Wells had, as a drama critic, witnessed James's public discomfiture at the first night of Guy Domville, when the gallery booed the American novelist as he came out to take a bow before a fashionable London audience. In 1900, when Wells moved to Spade House, Sandgate, across Romney Marsh from James's house at Rye, the two began to meet with some frequency. They spent long hours in the Lamb House garden or in the library, in endless talk. Their friendship eventually foundered on their fundamental differences of outlook, both social and literary, but this presentation dates from the time when their friendship was in its first flush.

London to Ladysmith via Pretoria

London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1900. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a finely bound British first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. The binding is an understated but elegant full pebble grain morocco with beveled edge boards, gilt spine rules and print, head and foot bands, all edges gilt, and marbled endpapers. The binding was done by Ginesta Bookbinding of New York City. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". The British first edition was originally bound in an illustrated tan cloth that was visually arresting, but proved notoriously fragile and prone to wear, soiling, and spotting. The contents proved not much less fragile, prone to spotting, often severe. The contents of this copy are crisp and bright. We note almost none of the spotting endemic to the edition. We find no previous ownership marks. All maps and plans are present. The black morocco binding is pristine, with virtually no wear. The only minor flaw is a bit of scuffing to the gilt edges, with some top edge dulling. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.1.a, Woods/ICS A4(a.1), Langworth p.53.

        Ian Hamilton's March

London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1900. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, first printing, first issue of Churchill's fifth published book. Ian Hamilton's March was the second of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa during the Boer War. His daring escape less than a month later rendered him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill's first book of Boer War despatches, London to Ladysmith via Pretoria was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Ian Hamilton's March completes Churchill's coverage of the Boer War, publishing 17 letters to the Morning Post, spanning 31 March through 14 June 1900. The narrative in Ian Hamilton's March includes the liberation of the Pretoria prison camp where Churchill had been held. Though a companion and sequel to London to Ladysmith, it is notably different in appearance, content, and scarcity. The first printing saw only 5,000 copies - half as many copies as London to Ladysmith. Where Ladysmith bore a lavishly illustrated binding, Ian Hamilton's March was bound in red cloth matching the style of Churchill's first published book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force - fitting, as these were the first and last Churchill first editions published by Longmans, Green, and Co. While London to Ladysmith via Pretoria had swiftly published Churchill's dispatches in the wake of his capture and escape, for Ian Hamilton's March "the texts of the originally published letters were more extensively revised and four letters were included which had never appeared in periodical form" (Cohen, A8.1.a, Vol. I, p.105). Churchill effected these revisions while on board the passenger and cargo steamer Dunottar Castle, which was requisitioned as a troop ship, en route home to England. Arriving home from South Africa in July 1900, Churchill spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". This British first edition of Ian Hamilton's March was published just a few weeks later. This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. The binding remains tight with none of the hinge fraying that we commonly see, and only slight wear, confined to extremities. The spine is a little dulled and soiled, but, as with the binding as a whole, better than we normally find. The contents remain quite bright with a crisp feel. All maps and plans are intact, as is the original frontispiece and tissue guard, as well as the original black endpapers. Light spotting appears confined to the prelims and page edges. A tiny Hawick bookseller sticker is affixed to the lower front pastedown. Previous ownership marks are otherwise confined to the front free endpaper verso and the facing recto as follows: a pencil name, address, and date of "10th Oct 1900" (notably, the day of publication), a different name and Hawick address (same city as the bookseller sticker), and finally a more recent owner bookplate.
