[PAIR OF ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWINGS BY CHARLES RUSSELL, SHOWING SCENES OF AN INDIAN HUNTING WITH A RIFLE, AND A GROUP OF INDIANS RIDING HORSES]

[Great Falls, Mt, 1900. Small stain in upper left corner of horse riding drawing, faint crease in lower left corner of hunting drawing, else fine. In a folding green cloth chemise and green cloth slipcase, spine gilt. An outstanding pair of original pencil drawings by the great western illustrator, Charles Russell. One of the drawings shows a group of three Indian braves riding horses bareback at a high rate of speed. The lead rider is about to take a whip to his horse. The other illustration shows a male Indian holding a rifle and peering around a tree. Whether the brave's prey is animal or human is a question left to the imagination of the viewer. Both of these illustrations are drawn on the verso of trade cards of the Park Hotel of Great Falls, Montana. Charles Russell and his wife moved from Cascade to Great Falls, Montana in 1897. One of Russell's first paying jobs in Great Falls was to draw original illustrations on menus for a special Christmas dinner at the Park Hotel that December. These two sketches are unsigned, but their attribution to Charles M. Russell has been confirmed to us by Patrick Stewart, the former Director of the Amon Carter Museum and a leading Russell scholar. A pair of evocative sketches by one of the greatest western artists.

Paris, Librairie des Bibliophiles, 1900 [Paris, Charles Carrington] - Curiosités et Anecdotes sur la Flagellation par Hugues Rebell (et divers), édition Carrington (1900). Bel exemplaire. TIRAGE A PETIT NOMBRE.

[ARCHIVE OF JOURNALS, SCRAPBOOKS, AND PHOTOGRAPHS BELONGING TO U.S. NAVAL COMMANDER HORACE ELMER, INCLUDING A PHOTO ALBUM BELONGING TO HIS DAUGHTER, PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIVIST AND HOUSING REFORMER, EDITH ELMER WOOD]

[Various places], 1900. The collection as a whole is in very good condition. A comprehensive archive of material related to the life and death of Commander Horace Elmer (1846-98). Elmer entered the Naval academy Sept. 27, 1861, graduating in November 1864. He served on the U.S.S. Hartford, flagship of the East India squadron, from 1865 to 1868, where he rose swiftly through the ranks, attaining the rank of lieutenant-commander by 1869. He married Adele Wiley in 1870, and their first child, Edith, was born the following year. Elmer continued in his illustrious naval career, as executive of the Terror, 1870-71; of the Vandalia, 1871-72; navigator of the Ossipee, 1872; of the Colorado, 1873; and of the Congress, 1874-76; and executive of the Worcester and of the Franklin, 1877. After two years of duty at the torpedo station, Elmer served as executive officer of the Kearsarge, 1879-82, and then of the Constellation in 1883. He went on to become the head of the department of seamanship at the United States Naval Academy, 1883-86, and was promoted to the rank of commander on March 2, 1885. He commanded the U.S.S. Kearsarge from 1889 to 1892. On March 24, 1898, he was selected to organize and command the Mosquito Fleet and the inner coast defense of the Atlantic and Gulf states in the war between the United States and Spain, a duty of the greatest importance and of the heaviest responsibility, and a commodore's command. In April, Elmer contracted a severe cold which developed into pneumonia; he died later that month, on the very day he was removed from command. The material in this archive relates to his time on the U.S.Ss. Hartford, Ossipee, Colorado, and Kearsarge. A large photo album belonging to Elmer's daughter, Edith Elmer Wood (1871-1945), is also among these items. Wood, a graduate of Smith College, was a woman ahead of her times. She married naval officer Albert Norton Wood in 1893, had four children, and was a writer of fiction and travel literature. In 1906, stationed with her husband in Puerto Rico, she became heavily involved in the issue of public health, organizing and eventually heading the Anti-Tuberculosis League of Puerto Rico. Her husband retired from the Navy in 1910, moving the family back to the United States. Eventually moving to Washington, D.C., Wood was active in that city's reform movement against alley dwellings from 1913 to 1915. In 1915 she moved her family back to New York City in order to pursue a career as a professional housing reformer. She attended the New York School of Philanthropy (later, New York School of Social Work), from which she earned a diploma in 1917, and Columbia University, receiving an A.M. in 1917 and a Ph.D. in political economy in 1919. Her dissertation called for a national policy to provide low-cost housing, asserting that housing should be a public service, like utilities. Her goal was partially realized with the passage of the Wagner-Steagall Housing Act of 1937, which legislated her plan of slum clearance and construction of the nation's first publicly funded housing units as replacements. The items are as follows: 1) [Two Journals, Covering Elmer's First Two Years Out of the U.S. Naval Academy]. October 1864 - December 1866. 118; 256pp. approximately 10,000 and 30,000 words. Quarto. Contemporary red three-quarter morocco and marbled boards. Boards scuffed, rubbed at extremities. Internally clean. Very good. The first of these covers the period right before graduation up to Elmer's assignment to the U.S.S. Hartford. It contains a mixture of personal entries, technical sketches for the interior workings of ships' engines, and some naval educational exercises. Of note: Elmer spent some time aboard the U.S.S. Monitor and has drawn a diagram of her engines. He has pasted a poem clipped from a newspaper lamenting Lincoln's assassination on the rear pastedown. The second journal records two years spent aboard the U.S.S. Hartford, cruising in the East Indies. Elmer relates his experiences in an easy and readable manner. A representative entry from January 1866 reads: "We are enjoying the full benefit of the rainy season now. I haven't seen the sun for nearly a week, and a waterproof and [illegible noun] have become as necessary articles of clothing as coat and pants. rain! rain!! rain!!! There seems to be no end to the deluge. The air is cool, however, and very pleasant when you can get a chance to breathe a little of it out of the rain. Our monkey takes to Hard Tack and coffee and bean soup like an old sailor. As might be supposed he is a great pet. And if it wasn't for his vulgar posterior I'd like to take him home. The best book I have read for some time past is Dickens' 'Dombey and Son.' Captain Cuttle is equal to Wilkins McCawber and the story of little Paul Dombey a perfect gem." 2) [Navigator's Notes Kept Aboard the U.S.S. Ossippee, 1872]. 100pp. approximately 10,000 words. Contemporary red half morocco and marbled boards. Marbled paper on front board a bit chipped in spots, rubbed at extremities. Head of spine worn. Internally clean. Very good. Now risen to the rank of lieutenant commander and the navigator aboard the Ossippee, this volume contains Elmer's notes on navigation, surveying, and "memoranda" recounting the cruise of the Ossippee from Peru to New York. It also includes a section of notes labeled "miscellaneous," which is filled with random factoids, many of which relate to torpedoes or explosions. 3) [Watch, Quarter, and Station Bill Kept Aboard the U.S.S. Ossippee and U.S.S. Colorado]. Folio. Contemporary blue half morocco and marbled boards. Boards heavily scuffed, rubbed at extremities. Internally clean. Very good. The Watch, Quarter, and Station Bill gives instructions for handling different situations aboard ship, including changes in sails and the positions of the crewmen. Elmer was the navigator on both of these vessels. 4) [Scrapbook Containing Naval and Other Maritime Clippings from Various Periodicals]. 1878-1879. Thirty leaves. Folio. Contemporary black three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, paper label on cover. Rubbed at extremities. Foxing. Good. 5) [Scrapbook of Clippings Related to the Mosquito Fleet and Commander Elmer's Death]. 1898-1900. Forty-one leaves, plus two dozen extra pieces of manuscript and printed material laid in. Original black embossed cloth. Some offsetting from clippings onto blank versos; minimal foxing. Very good. This scrapbook, most likely kept by Elmer's wife, Adele, contains clippings related to Elmer's last assignment. It is primarily composed of obituaries, each neatly labeled as to newspaper and date. Elmer caught pneumonia which was brought on by exposure while he was on duty. As one headline reads, Commander Elmer "Dies a martyr to his duty." The manuscript and printed material laid in mostly relates to Mrs. Elmer's pension. There is also a small stack of telegrams she received in condolence. 6) [Collection of Nine Loose Photographs Mounted on Cards]. 1870-1892. Various sizes, ranging from 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 to 3 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Some light foxing to photos and cards. Very good. Collection of photographs spanning twenty years, including some from Elmer's time in Santo Domingo. The shots from Santo Domingo include a lovely group shot of Commander Elmer with several other important men, including the President of Santo Domingo. The others are primarily portraits, including a picture of Adele Wiley as a young woman; and Edith Elmer Wood as a baby, and then another later shot of her as a young woman. 7) [Photo Album Belonging to Edith Elmer Wood]. 1890- 1896. Forty-five photos of varying sizes. Oblong folio. Original purple cloth, cover lettered in gilt. Faded and rubbed around the edges. Leaves still quite sound. Some scattered foxing, though most photos are quite clean. Very good. Edith Elmer Wood's photograph album contains some very lovely shots, including two large photos of the Kearsage, one being of the officers and another of the crew being inspected, both dated 1890; several snapshots of interiors of family residences, including one of her mother in a rocking chair, and a photo of Commander Elmer working at his desk in the Ordnance Office; ten photos, five quite large, of the Chicago World's Fair in 1893; and ten large photographs taken on the campus of the United States Naval Academy, two of them featuring Mrs. Wood and her husband. Other scenes from the Naval Academy include cadets being drilled and the Tripoli Monument. On the whole, an amazing treasure trove of images and writings surrounding the life of an important American Naval Officer.

A collection of 265 fine original drawings published in various entomological journals from about 1900-1936.

      - Oblong folio (305 x 425mm). Half leather. Edward Ernest Green (1861-1949) was an English entomologist. "Born in Ceylon, he was educated at Charterhouse School. He returned to Ceylon in 1880 to manage his father's plantations. Green developed a keen interest in mycology and entomology related to coffee and tea growing. On his retirement in 1913 he returned to England and expanded his collections of scale insects. His publications included 'The Coccidae of Ceylon' (1896-1922) and over 200 papers" (Harvey, Gilbert & Martin. A catalogue of manuscripts in the entomology library of the Natural History Museum, London p. 90). The Natural History Museum has Green's original drawings for 'The Coccidae of Ceylon'. He also published a work on the 'Tea Mites' (1900). All the drawings have been mounted, and a few have come loose. The drawings, the majority concern scale insects, are extremely precise and detailed and many concern the gender of the insects. Green's collection of Heteroptera from Ceylon is in the Indian Museum in Calcutta and his Microlepidoptera and Coleoptera from Ceylon are in the Natural History Museum in London.Provenance: The drawings were offered for sale in Wheldon & Wesley's catalogue 208 no. 51 (1995) and purchased by Kikumaro Okano.         A Guide to the Mammals, Birds, Batrachians, Reptiles, Fish, Lepidoptera, and Mushrooms of (Primarily) Western New York State. Handwritten and Illustrated by Gerritt S. Miller, Jr., a Biologist at the Smithsonian Institute

1900-1920, Albany 1900 - Loose leaves, lined paper (165 x 220 mm); 61 hand-numbered pages, handwritten on both the recto and verso in black ink throughout, with historiated initials in color and a 3-page "Duck Chart" illustrated in b/w (ink and goache); plus 6 leaves of unlined paper at rear, with full-color ink and gouache illustrations of butterflies and moths on both the recto and verso (12 pages, 48 lepidoptera shown). Pages a bit brittle and age-toned, with some very light chipping and tiny closed tears along the edges, and the occasional dust-smudge. A charming taxonomy, listing the scientific and common names of a variety of plants and animals, and sometimes adding fuller descriptions of physical features or other notes. It includes Mammals (pp. 1-10, 34); Birds, with a list of Western NY Birds and the afore-mentioned Duck Chart (pp. 25-33); Batrachians of NY (pp. 36); List of Reptiles and Batrachia of Western NY State (pp. 37-38); Fishes and Mammals of NY State (pp. 39-41); American Lepidoptera (pp. 41-43), Mushrooms of NY State (pp. 45-46). This was a document that Miller must have used often and returned to, as marginalia, pencilled notations, and other asides are common. A list of plants and flowers occupies pp. 47-61, and Miller records, "This was written 1920. Notes were made 1946." He finishes up with nicely accomplished full-color ink and goache illustrations of 48 different lepidoptera, each one labelled with its scientific name. Miller seems to have found great pleasure in his work. Gerritt S. Miller, Jr., graduated from Harvard University in 1894 and worked under Clinton Hart Merriam at the United States Department of Agriculture. He was assistant curator of mammals at the United States National Museum in Washington in 1898, and became curator from 1909 to 1940, while an Associate in biology at the Smithsonian Institution. In 1906, he travelled to France, Spain, and Tangier on a collecting trip. In 1915, he published the results of his studies of casts of specimens associated with the Piltdown Man, concluding that the jaw actually came from a fossil ape. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Wien, ca. 1900]. 13 x 20 cm. Unter Passep., ger. Sign. "R.Schima". vgl. Rotter, Neubau S. 54 ff. Invoice for Therapy. Autograph Note Signed, Therapy Invoice, in German, on his oblong small 8vo "Berggasse 19", correspondence card, Vienna, January 31, 1934. Freud has addressed this card to Professor R. Grinker, as an invoice for 21 hours of Freud's services at a rate of 100 Austrian shillings per hour for a total of 2100 shillings. "Herrn Prof. R. Grinker/Januar 21 Stunden=S2100. Freud/ Signed, "Freud."

Roy R. Grinker (1900-1993), an American neurologist, had analysis with Freud (1933-1935). He was often urged to write a book about his experiences with Freud, as did several others (Aldington, 1926; Wortis, 1954; Dorsey 1976; Kardiner, 1977). Grinker refused, claiming that Freud had wanted him to preserve Freud's confidentiality. Grinker became a teacher of psychiatry and psychoanalysis for close to 60 years. He founded the Institute of Psychosomatic and Psychiatric Research and Training at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and was a prolific writer in his field. Residue stains on verso and slight paper removal near right margin barely affecting the final "r" in Grinker. The card is clearly written on Freud's most desirable "Berggasse 19" stationery card.

Heptalogus septem sapientium Gr[a]eci[a]e, sententias pr[a]estantiores explicans. (Colophon:) Deventer, Albertus Pafraet, May 1517. 4to. With a woodcut of a haloed knight on title, with a falcon on his gloved right hand and a raised sword in his left. With 1 printed uncial initial and one space with a guide letter intended for a manuscript initial that has not been added. Set in rotunda gothic types, with a few headings in textura and occasional words in a Greek type in the pre-Aldine style. Brown half morocco (ca. 1900).

      - NCC (The Hague copy); Nijhoff & Kronenberg 305 (The Hague copy); USTC (The Hague & Brussels copies); WorldCat (The Hague copy); not in BMC STC Dutch. Third copy located of a Deventer post-incunable edition of one of the most elegantly written Latin schoolbooks from the turn of the 15th century, first published at Bologna by Benedict Hector in 1498. It teaches children through comprehensive and entertaining stories based on proverbs and sayings of the Seven Wise Men. Fillipo Beroaldo, the elder (1453-1505), a celebrated Italian literary author, opened a school at Bologna when he was only 19 years old. He taught at Parma and Milan, and later at Paris University, where he inspired French youth for classical literature. He was recalled to Bologna to take the chair in literature at the University. He remained there until his death. Beroaldo edited a large number of classical authors, which made him famous throughout Europe, but the present attractively composed schoolbook received no less fame, being published in the early 16th century at Paris, Deventer, Basel and many other cities. Although the USTC lists copies at the Royal Libraries in The Hague and Brussels, the former also reported in the other references, it adds a note: "no known surviving copy". The copy at The Hague certainly survives, however, and the catalogue of the Brussels library lists its copy with no indication that it is lost. With a few contemporary manuscript notes in the margins. Slightly thumbed and some marginal restorations in the first and last leaf, but still in good condition.

Through the First Antarctic Night 1898–1899

London: William Heinemann, , 1900. A Narrative of the Voyage of the "Belgica" among Newly Discovered Lands and over an Unknown Sea about the South Pole. Octavo. Original pale blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, lettered and with pictorial block in white on front cover, Coloured frontispiece, 3 other coloured plates, 74 half-tone plates and numerous illustrations to the text. Spine rolled and lightly sunned. An excellent copy. First edition. Cook had previously travelled as surgeon and anthropologist on Peary's second expedition to Greenland - and had fallen out with the leader over his treatment of the Inuit and his subordinates - when he joined the Belgian Antarctic Expedition in a similar capacity. When the expedition became trapped in the ice after crossing the Antarctic Circle, "Cook soon proved the most invaluable of the scientists, devising an antiscorbutic diet and observing some of the curious physical and mental effects caused by the absence of sunlight. He devised a crude form of light therapy to treat what is now commonly known as seasonal affective disorder, alleviating the condition by placing the afflicted crew members before an open fire" (Howgego). Having previously disagreed with Peary on the subject of publications, Cook pre-empted the official report by publishing an account in the New York Herald in 1899, followed by the present work in 1900. Amundsen, who served on the Expedition as first mate, contributes Appendix V, "The Navigation of the Antarctic Ice-Pack", and further distinguished himself by becoming the first person to ski on Antarctica.
