Jena, 2. VIII. 1900. - 2 SS. Gr.-8vo. Mit einigen eh. Notenbeispielen. [folgen dieselben] [.]". - Mit zwei kleinen Randeinrissen, sonst tadellos.

Studies Scientific and Social, in 2 volumes, complete.

London: Macmillan and Co., . First edition. 1900 - Pp. 1125; 110 text-figures and maps. Publisher's original forest green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and decorated in gilt on the boards, 8vo. This is the rare first edition of an uncommon Wallace title. These two volumes present a collection of articles and papers by the author, which were previously published in journals between 1865 and 1899, and are presented here with some revisions and copious illustrations. Many of these individual papers are very difficult to acquire which makes this two volume set very hard to fine. Wallace is perhaps best known today as the co-discoverer of evolution by natural selection, independently of Darwin. In 1858 the two men co-authored the first publication on natural selection (Tendency of Species to Form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection). A fine copy (as new) copy in spectacular condition.

O.H.M.S.". An Illustrated Record of the Voyage of S.S. "Tintagel Castle" conveying Twelve Hundred Soldiers from Southampton to Cape Town, March 1900

London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., Limited,, 1900. Recorded and Illustrated by … Foolscap quarto. Original pale blue pictorial paper-covered boards. Profusely illustrated from photographs. A little rubbed, skilfully rebacked to style, marginal toning, else a very good copy. First and only edition of Shackleton's first publication, a joint self-publication with his co-author, the ship's surgeon. A fully subscribed print-run of 2,000 copies has not prevented this badly made book - printed on adhesion-prone art paper, and wire-stiched into paper-covered boards - from becoming decidedly uncommon, just 7 locations on Copac, OCLC adds 5. Essentially the cruise book of the Union Castle mail steamer's service as a transport in the Boer War, and typically providing a detailed record of daily activities, and - with an eye to possible subscribers - an exhaustive list of all of the men on board. Serendipitously this cruise was to have a crucial influence on Shackleton's future career, and on the history of polar exploration. During the voyage he met Lt. Cedric Longstaff, of the 2nd East Surrey Regiment - listed p.54, and pictured in the group portrait facing - son of Llewelyn W. Longstaff, linseed magnate, member of the Royal Geographical Society and friend of its president Clements Markham. In 1899 Longstaff had pledged £25,000 to Markham's scheme for a British expedition to Antarctica, drawing matching funds from the government, and putting the ship that was to become Discovery on the stocks. By way of a quid pro quo Longstaff had Markham's ear, and used the opportunity to recommend the Tintagel Castle's Third Officer, of whom his son had spoken so highly. The Longstaff Peaks on the Ross Ice Shelf were named for this influential patron. A well-preserved copy of this elusive and highly desirable book.

Societe Nationale d'Horticulture de France, Exposition Generale

Paris, c. 1900. Hardcover. Fine. Half black calf and mottled green cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on upper board; oblong folio (381x280 mm); containing 71 mounted photographs by C[onstant] Robert of 65 Avenue de la Bourdonnais (credited on the front board), of a French exposition of orchids, roses, lillies, irises, bonsai trees, and fruit. 57 platinum prints and 14 silver prints, ranging in size from 89x127 to 164x229 mm, mounted to sheets (creating a thin border of beige, white, or pale grey) and heavy grey boards, arranged 1 to 4 per page, recto only. A lavish album, just a bit rubbed along the edges. The Paris horticultural society originated in 1827 and, as it grew, became the Royal Horticultural Society (1835), then, in 1885 the "Societe Nationale d'Horticulture de France." The exposition portrayed here was extensive and possibly associated with one of the great international French expositions of the turn of the century. All but two images are interior photographs of plants or displays, including close-ups of specific blooms, arrangements of fruit, wide views of the room, and an array of Bonsai trees in Oriental ceramic pots.

        Lord Jim

London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1900. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. A near fine example with only light shelf wear to the extremities and the endpapers ever so slightly browned. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. First printing with the first issue points including the misprints "anyrate" p. 77, l. 5, "cure" (instead of "cured") p. 226, 7 lines from the bottom, the omission of "keep" after "can" p. 226, 7 lines from the bottom, and "his" p. 319, last line, being printed below the line. In a moment of crisis, an idealistic ship's officer abandons his post, leaving several hundred passengers to drown. The event at the center of Joseph Conrad's acclaimed novel establishes the character and fate of Jim. Tormented by his defection from his code of conduct, Jim embarks on the globe-traveling quest to regain honor. In the process, he insinuates himself as a leader among a people unaware of his past. Arthur Symons and other critics read Lord Jim as an exploration of Conrad's own 'ideal of an applauded heroism', an ideal that confronts the demands of pragmatism. Others see an allegory for Conrad's guilt over abandoning his native Poland or, alternatively, a story of universal shame. Conrad has come under modern attack for associating 'natives' with chaos and evil. But in Conrad's novels, it is ultimately the colonial system itself that is fraught with horror." (NYPL Books of the Century 67). Listed by Modern Library as one of the 100 great novels of the twentieth century.

„Malweibern".

The waxed cloth cover is in robust and stoic condition. Although there is average wear about the edges and corners the cover is firm and strong to the hold. Inside, the paper spread is cracked along the spine but still holds. The cloth map is in very good condition. There is no damage and what marking there is, is consequent to its age and use. The colours are vibrant; the print bold, the folds muscular and strong. fk Quantity Available: 1. Category: Africana - Maps (Antique); Inventory No: ahhc.
