Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Th. Herzl").

[Wien], 9. IV. 1900. - 1 S. 8vo. All the gifts and possibilities of the adult woman are already evident in [Gretel]. And it is her peculiar charm that she never knows nor suspects the existence of what is already awake in her. In her glance you read all the measure of intelligence that one needs for life, for, fortunately for her, she does not know what life is . She lacks only knowledge, experience, destiny; otherwise she is a complete human being" (zit. n. A. Chouraqui, A Man Alone: The Life of Theodor Herzl, S. 168). - Unveröffentlicht.

Original Art]: Jewish Couple in Psychiatrist's Waiting Room

      - Original art. Acrylic on canvas backed with board. Framed to approximately 29.5" x 23.5". Signed "X. Cugat" in the lower right corner. A couple of wrinkles on the canvas, else fine. A satirical painting of a Jewish husband sitting in the waiting room of a psychiatrist, with his wife, who is dressed like a nun and wearing a Star of David. Cugat probably had as much to do with bringing a Latin flavor to American music as any other musician. Born in 1900 in Spain, he emigrated with his family to Cuba when he was five. Trained as a violinist, he moved to New York as a teenager to take advantage of the short-lived tango craze. When it inevitably ended, he employed his talents as an artist to work as a cartoonist for the *Los Angeles Times* and eventually had his cartoons syndicated by King Features. As sound began to be used in movies, he assembled another tango band that had some success. He took his band to New York where it became the resident band for the new Waldorf Astoria. A notorious womanizer, he had four wives and always put attractive women in his groups. He gave Rita Hayworth one of her first jobs, and his third wife was blonde bombshell and singer Abbe Lane. In the mid-1960s, he took another blonde as a wife, Charo, who became the famous "cuchi-cuchi girl." His brother, Francis Cugat, also had an artistic bent, and was the artist who created the striking dust jacket art for F. Scott Fitzgerald's *The Great Gatsby.* [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Lord Roberts has ordered the following proclamation to be circulated in English and Dutch: Proclamation. Mr. Kruger, with the archives of the South African Republic, has crossed into Portuguese territory, and arrived at Lourenço Marques, with a view for sailing to Europe.

      A. W. Bayly & Co., 15 September, Lourenço Marques 1900 - Folio broadside, approx. 22½ x 17½ inches, previous folds, loss at the central fold causing partial loss to three words, substantial paper tape repair and reinforcement on verso. A good copy of a rare broadside (we've been unable to locate another copy) announcing the departure of Transvaal President Paul Kruger and his desertion of the Boer cause, and inviting his followers to surrender unconditionally. The British attempt to annex first the Transvaal in 1880, and then in 1899 both the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, was their biggest incursion into southern Africa, but it wasn't until 1902 that the conflict was finally resolved due to the persistent guerilla tactics of the Boers. In this broadside - propaganda as much as anything - Roberts states that "if any further doubts remain in the minds of the Burghers as to Her Majesty's intentions, they should be dispelled by the permanent manner in which the country is gradually being occupied by Her Majesty's forces, and by the issue of the Proclamations signed by me on the 24th day of May, and the first day of September, 1900, annexing the Free State and Transvaal respectively in the name of Her Majesty."I take this opportunity of pointing out that, except a small area occupied by the Boer army, under the personal command of Commandant Botha, the war is degenerating, and has degenerated, into operations carried on in an irregular, irresponsible manner, by small and, in many cases, insignificant bodies of men."The text of the broadside is co-signed by Fritz Pincus, agent for the Reuter's Telegram Company.       Philadelphia & London: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1900 - Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-308 [309-320: ads], frontispiece with illustration by Virginia H. Davisson, title page printed in red and black, original pictorial white cloth, front and spine panels stamped in red and purple, rear panel stamped in red (binding signed "H"), t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. Exotic romance of Americans in Japan; the title character is a beautiful but heartless femme fatale associated with the Fox Woman legend referred to as the "vampire-girl" - in short, the flame- haired variant of the vamp. No transformations; but Japanese victim succumbs to atavism under her fascination, has "a lust for warm and flowing blood," biting his prey. An evil dwarf features prominently in the story. Part sensational romance, part serious study of cultural conflicts, art vs. life, and the nature and destiny of souls. The author is best known for his short story "Madame Butterfly," dramatized in collaboration with David Belasco, later made into the famous opera by Puccini. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Not in Reginald (1978). Wright (III) 3388. Stamping on spine panel faded, mild dust soiling to rear panel, a very good copy. A very nice copy of a rare vampire novel.         The Complete Works.

Glasgow: Gowars & Gray,, 1900-01. Edited by H. Buxton Forman. 5 volumes, small octavo (170 × 102 mm). Contemporary vellum-backed pale green cloth, spines with attractive Art Nouveau floral decoration titles to tan morocco labels gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Vignette title-pages printed in red and black. Small worm-track to lower outer corner of vol. I up to p. 73. Largely unopened, an excellent set. First Scottish edition. Henry Buxton Forman (1842-1917) was a bibliographer - and later a notorious forger - whose "literary interests crystallized round Keats and Shelley. He channelled a general enthusiasm into a minute study of textual details, for which his careful and exacting temperament was ideally suited. His patient application produced impressive editions of Shelley (8 vols., 1876?-80) and Keats (4 vols., 1883). His most controversial piece of scientific editing was The Letters of John Keats to Fanny Brawne (1876), as there was thought to be something improper in the publication of such frank letters. After the fuss had died down, Forman's insistence on what the author wrote was seen to be correct, and his editions became standard and his methods widely adopted" (ODNB). A really handsome set in a contemporary Art Nouveau binding.

[PAIR OF ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWINGS BY CHARLES RUSSELL, SHOWING SCENES OF AN INDIAN HUNTING WITH A RIFLE, AND A GROUP OF INDIANS RIDING HORSES]

[Great Falls, Mt, 1900. Small stain in upper left corner of horse riding drawing, faint crease in lower left corner of hunting drawing, else fine. In a folding green cloth chemise and green cloth slipcase, spine gilt. An outstanding pair of original pencil drawings by the great western illustrator, Charles Russell. One of the drawings shows a group of three Indian braves riding horses bareback at a high rate of speed. The lead rider is about to take a whip to his horse. The other illustration shows a male Indian holding a rifle and peering around a tree. Whether the brave's prey is animal or human is a question left to the imagination of the viewer. Both of these illustrations are drawn on the verso of trade cards of the Park Hotel of Great Falls, Montana. Charles Russell and his wife moved from Cascade to Great Falls, Montana in 1897. One of Russell's first paying jobs in Great Falls was to draw original illustrations on menus for a special Christmas dinner at the Park Hotel that December. These two sketches are unsigned, but their attribution to Charles M. Russell has been confirmed to us by Patrick Stewart, the former Director of the Amon Carter Museum and a leading Russell scholar. A pair of evocative sketches by one of the greatest western artists.
