Manuscript Archive - British Soldier's Account of Travels Through Africa and Encounters with Tribal Customs

Africa, 1900. Africa, India, Asia, 1900-1960. Archive of typescript works by author, renowned hunter, and British Army soldier, Lt-Col H.E. Crocker, featuring game hunting and travel accounts, some of which were printed as articles, and some unpublished, many of which were intended to be released collectively as a book. Largely recollecting his experiences in Rhodesia, Tanganyika, the Congo, and Nigeria, secondly on his game hunting adventures around the world, including Australia, India, and Africa, and finally, his post-war interest in international affairs, this voluminous archive appears to also form the most complete account of Crocker's life and career. Two documents are signed in the original by him. Qto. Single leafs, the author's draft copies and personal typed notes, measuring approximately 21cm x 31 cm. A substantial lot of documents neatly organized in five folders. Very Good condition, a fascinating archive with noteworthy historical content spanning four decades. Yale University Library holds four of Crocker's Boer War diaries. Cambridge University Library holds a diary kept by Crocker during his military operations in Iraq. One of the folders contains a 500-plus page unpublished book manuscript titled, "Africa from Within" made by Lieutenant Colonel Crocker circa 1960-1962. Some of his hunting adventures were previously published in poem form, in a 1930s port hunting magazine called "The Field: Hoghunter's Annual." Other articles pertaining to Africa were published in the "Army Quarterly Magazine." Some of the adventures and observations described within, however, were not published, and, according to the preface leaf, the writer was intending to put the latter together as a complete and detailed illustrated book. It seems that he was working with an editor near the time of his death, and, fate would be such that the book was not published due to his untimely passing. A comprehensive auto-biographical archive of sorts, Lieutenant-Colonel Crocker kept numerous well written recollections of his hunting expeditions in Africa, some of his prizes including lions in Tanganyika, a black rhinoceros in East Africa, hippopotamus and elephant hunting in the Belgian Congo, and duck on the Zambesi. He further mentions meeting Sir Julian Huxley, secretary of the Zoological Society of London and founding member of the World Wildlife Fund. Chasing the thrill of a good hunt elsewhere around the world, he pursues wild boar and jackals in Cawnpore and the Kadir plains of India, but deems Queensland, Australia to be the "hoghunter's paradise." He also describes crocodile hunting in the great Down Under. A captivating account describes a hunt for black partridge near Baghdad, Iraq, during his service in the Mesopotamia Campaign. In Germany, he partook in a "pig-sticking festival," his account digressing into the event's ancient tradition and exuberant female participants. Closer to home, in Scotland's Highland lochs and rivers, in east central Ireland, and in Hertfordshire in England, he takes up fly fishing. Crocker also takes earnest interest in the unique tribes dispersed across the African continent, making note both lively and sombre customs as he travels. Again highly captivating, and presenting unforgettable detail, he describes and contemplates without bias, subjects such as cannibalism among the Leopard society, superstition and witchcraft, juju and amulets and venerated objects, lycanthropy, serpent totems for worship, male initiation rites and excessive whipping, ancient dugouts in Rhodesia once believed to slave pits, rain dances and festivities, marriage customs, tribal dress, communications and industry, as well as the discovery of the bronze head and the other copper alloy sculptures in 1938 at Ife in Nigeria. Not simply an observer, Crocker was a member of the Conservative Commonwealth Council for East and Central Africa, among other groups, and according to meeting minutes herein, was involved in the rehabilitation of the Mau Mau during the 1950s uprisings, in hopes of improving living standards and conditions. Shortly after World War II he reported on a munitions area in East Africa. Whilst clearly possessing an insatiable enthusiasm for sport hunting and a fondness for Africa and her people, Crocker's inquisitive mind and adventurous spirit were also roused with travels to other countries, with the British Army and on his own accord. In a signed firsthand witness account Crocker describes a fire walking ceremony in Benares. He also possessed a keen interest in global advancement and world events, rendering here numerous unpublished expositions and personal observations of politics, education, industrialization, and campaigns of war, starting with his own participation in the Fall of Baghdad in 1917 with the Thirteenth Division under General Maude. A fourteen page account on the Northern States of India deals with border disputes, Chinese claims, and railways in Nepal, Kashmir-Tibet, Assam. Also pertaining to India he discusses the announcement of an important Russian steel plant, Bhilai Steel Plant, located in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, which in 1955 became India's first and main producer of steel rails. Education is his area of focus in Pakistan. A seventeen page report examines the reformation of Taiwan during the 1950s under KMT (Chinese Nationalist Party) rule, including the highly successful land reform program, mining exports, freedom of speech, and social conditions according to a Saigon civilian. Yielding numerous engaging adventures, this substantial archive of firsthand accounts embodies the life of an all-but-forgotten gallant British soldier, skilled game hunter, and writer. Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert Edmund Crocker (1877-1962) obtained a commission as Lieutenant in the Essex Regiment in 1900, and served in the Second Boer War. After sustaining an injury during his regimental service in Belfast, South Africa, in 1901 he was seconded to the North Nigerian Regiment, remaining at this post until the end of the war. During the First World War, Crocker commanded the 13th Signal Company at Gallipoli, where he was wounded. He was appointed second-in-command of the 8th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, which arrived in Mesopotamia in late February 1916, and became battalion commander during the capture of Hai Salient on 15 February 1917, retaining this position until the end of the war. Crocker retired from the army in 1929 after some years in India, and subsequently decided to travel, hunt, and write, exploring extensively in Africa with his wife. He died on 13 May 1962. . Very Good.

"Lord Roberts has ordered the following proclamation to be circulated in English and Dutch: Proclamation. Mr. Kruger, with the archives of the South African Republic, has crossed into Portuguese territory, and arrived at Lourenço Marques, with a view for sailing to Europe..."

Lourenço Marques: "A. W. Bayly & Co., 15 September". 1900. "Folio broadside, approx. 22½ x 17½ inches, previous folds, loss at the central fold causing partial loss to three words, substantial paper tape repair and reinforcement on verso. A good copy of a rare broadside (we've been unable to locate another copy) announcing the departure of Transvaal President Paul Kruger and his desertion of the Boer cause, and inviting his followers to surrender unconditionally. The British attempt to annex first the Transvaal in 1880, and then in 1899 both the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, was their biggest incursion into southern Africa, but it wasn't until 1902 that the conflict was finally resolved due to the persistent guerilla tactics of the Boers. In this broadside - propaganda as much as anything - Roberts states that ""if any further doubts remain in the minds of the Burghers as to Her Majesty's intentions, they should be dispelled by the permanent manner in which the country is gradually being occupied by Her Majesty's forces, and by the issue of the Proclamations signed by me on the 24th day of May, and the first day of September, 1900, annexing the Free State and Transvaal respectively in the name of Her Majesty. ""I take this opportunity of pointing out that, except a small area occupied by the Boer army, under the personal command of Commandant Botha, the war is degenerating, and has degenerated, into operations carried on in an irregular, irresponsible manner, by small and, in many cases, insignificant bodies of men."" The text of the broadside is co-signed by Fritz Pincus, agent for the Reuter's Telegram Company."

The History of the Valorous and Witty Knight-Errant Don Quixote of the Mancha

London: Macmillan, 1900. Three octavo volumes, contemporary blue crushed morocco gilt over blue cloth boards, raised bands, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Lightest shelfwear. Handsomely bound edition of Cervantes's great picaresque novel, including a bibliographical preface and a glossary. The text follows Thomas Shelton's seventeenth-century translation, the first translation of the Quixote into any foreign language, and a landmark in English literary history. Originally issued in two parts in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote begins as a parody of chivalric romances, but expands to examine the whole of Spanish society through the adventures of the deluded Quixote and his long-suffering companion Sancho Panza. "His follies prevailing more than any other reason, he purposed to cause himself to be knighted by the first he met, to the imitation of many others that did the same, as he had read in the books which distracted him. . . . thus he pacified his mind and prosecuted his journey, without choosing any other way than that which his horse pleased, believing that therein consisted the vigour of knightly adventures." A near-fine copy of the most influential work of Spanish literature, handsomely bound by Maclehose of Glasgow.

Publisher's appealing deluxe binding of red half morocco over pink marbled boards, raised bands, spine gilt in three small and one large compartment, the latter containing an elongated Art Nouveau-style rose topiary, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges rough trimmed. Spines slightly affected by light (each spine evenly so, but with differing resultant shades), a little wear to extremities, bottom corner of one leaf torn off with loss of a couple of letters, another leaf with small hole and the same degree of loss, other trivial imperfections, but an excellent set of a readable edition from a major publisher, with sturdy bindings that show almost no wear to the joints and an essentially unread text that obviously shows almost no signs of use.

Autograph Manuscript Signed of his poem "Custer"

N.p. [New York], 1900. Fair copy, one page, on a single sheet of personal letterhead. 1 vols. 8vo. Slight toning at lower margin. Fair copy, one page, on a single sheet of personal letterhead. 1 vols. 8vo. Custer: Stedman's Revised Version. When news of Little Big Horn spread, one of the first of many poems to appear was Edmund Clarence Stedman's "Custer", in the CHICAGO TRIBUNE of July 16, 1876. That version of Stedman's poem was among the first to give voice to the myth of the lion-maned young warrior who was cut down savagely by a "wolvish foe"; and that version was a much longer poem that this brief, 10-line elegy, no doubt written much later by a poet better informed by the truth. Now there is no blood-thirsty, savage foe -- but Custer's "deathless spirit" still manages to mount to the stars.

Coventry: Stevengraph Works, 1900. Tape (?) discolorations at cloth margins, in one spot [top center] just touching the outer edge of the primary image, otherwise confined to margins.. A stunning silver & black weave. Image: 10" x 8-1/2". Overall: 11-3/4" x 10". No manufacturer's mount. In the mid-19th C, the town of Coventry, England, was the centre of a ribbon weaving industry. Thomas Stevens, a local weaver, adapted Jacquard looms to weave colourful pictures from silk. By 1862, Stevens could produce four different designs. Business boomed and Stevens acquired two larger factories; by 1875 he was calling his product the "Stevengraph", named after himself. He exhibited internationally in America, France & Holland, winning some 30 medals & diplomas. In 1878 Stevens moved to London and began to mount his Stevengraphs as framed pictures - by the late 1880s Stevens had over 900 different designs. [Wiki]. This Stevengraph [by Stevens?] celebrates the 1900 Paris World Fair, depicting the US Pavilion, which was designed by Charles Coolidge. This an unusually large size Stevengraph, much larger than the bookmark format [et al] usually seen. Not in LeVan Baker catalogue, nor found in Godden's work, Stevengraphs and Other Victorian Silk Pictures.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Th. Herzl").

[Wien], 9. IV. 1900. - 1 S. 8vo. All the gifts and possibilities of the adult woman are already evident in [Gretel]. And it is her peculiar charm that she never knows nor suspects the existence of what is already awake in her. In her glance you read all the measure of intelligence that one needs for life, for, fortunately for her, she does not know what life is . She lacks only knowledge, experience, destiny; otherwise she is a complete human being" (zit. n. A. Chouraqui, A Man Alone: The Life of Theodor Herzl, S. 168). - Unveröffentlicht.

Original Art]: Jewish Couple in Psychiatrist's Waiting Room

      - Original art. Acrylic on canvas backed with board. Framed to approximately 29.5" x 23.5". Signed "X. Cugat" in the lower right corner. A couple of wrinkles on the canvas, else fine. A satirical painting of a Jewish husband sitting in the waiting room of a psychiatrist, with his wife, who is dressed like a nun and wearing a Star of David. Cugat probably had as much to do with bringing a Latin flavor to American music as any other musician. Born in 1900 in Spain, he emigrated with his family to Cuba when he was five. Trained as a violinist, he moved to New York as a teenager to take advantage of the short-lived tango craze. When it inevitably ended, he employed his talents as an artist to work as a cartoonist for the *Los Angeles Times* and eventually had his cartoons syndicated by King Features. As sound began to be used in movies, he assembled another tango band that had some success. He took his band to New York where it became the resident band for the new Waldorf Astoria. A notorious womanizer, he had four wives and always put attractive women in his groups. He gave Rita Hayworth one of her first jobs, and his third wife was blonde bombshell and singer Abbe Lane. In the mid-1960s, he took another blonde as a wife, Charo, who became the famous "cuchi-cuchi girl." His brother, Francis Cugat, also had an artistic bent, and was the artist who created the striking dust jacket art for F. Scott Fitzgerald's *The Great Gatsby.* [Attributes: Signed Copy]
