      - Forskelligt farvet sten indlagt som mosaik i sort skiffer. 22x15 cm. I sort ramme [28,5x21 cm.]. * pietra dura, (ital. Denne særlige kunstart dyrkes stadig i Firenze. [Gyldendals store Danske].

Copies of Letters from Lieut. the Honble. Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe A.D.C. to Field Marshal Lord Raglan written during the Crimean War to different members of his family, &c.

c.1900. 2 volumes, quarto. Early 20th-century red cloth, gilt lettered spines, red speckled edges. 418-page carbon-copy typescript, rectos only. 3 hand-drawn maps (2 coloured). Spines sunned, a few light abrasions to covers, inner hinges split but sound, but overall in very good condition. A fascinating family archive of 144 frank and detailed letters in typescript, from the originals, that Calthorpe wrote to his family and friends, spanning the years from 8 April 1854 to 24 July 1855. Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe (1831-1912), 7th Baron Calthorpe, was aide-de-camp to Lord Raglan, commander of the British expeditionary force in the Crimea. The letters differ considerably from the versions polished for publication and issued anonymously as Letters from Head-Quarters; or, the Realities of the. War in the Crimea (1856 and three editions by 1858). Of particular interest is a lengthy account (letter 57) of the Charge of the Light Brigade, accompanied by a hand-drawn, coloured map of dispositions at Balaclava. In this letter, Calthorpe puts the blame for that fateful charge squarely on Captain Louis Nolan, who was killed in the attack: "Captain Nolan went, but very much exceeded his orders: telling Lord Lucan that he was to charge the Lt: Cavalry at all hazards and retake the guns. Lord Lucan said it was madness to attempt it, and that it was taking the Light Cavalry to certain destruction. However, the order was of course obeyed." Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed from Charles Somerville Orde (1859-1937, banker and captain in the 2nd (Norfolk and Suffolk) Great Yarmouth Volunteer Corps), addressed to "My dear Calthorpe" (dated 25 September 1901), presumably Somerset Frederick Gough-Calthorpe (1862-1940), 8th Baron Calthorpe (whose large armorial bookplate is present in both volumes), son of Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe; it was this member of the Gough-Calthorpe family who was responsible for producing the two volumes ("It was a labour to undertake to type so much - so well done - I congratulate you").

London to Ladysmith via Pretoria. FIRST EDITION

London: Longmans, Green, & Co. 1900 - Longmans, Green, & Co., London, 1900. First edition, first printing. British first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. The leaf advertising the second impression of 'The River War' [one side] and Seventh Thousand of 'The Malakand Field Force' [the other side] is present at the rear as are the 32 pages of adverts with 50,000-10/99 at the base of the last page are present. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armoured train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Original green cloth with illustration of the authors on the front board. Minor insect damage to foront board, spine slightly toned, some foxing to endpapers, else quite sound and clean. The American husband and wife team were wealthy, zealous, and energetic explorers who together made many expeditions to the Himalayas. Fanny, a suffragist as well as a bit of a publicity hound, made sure the world knew of her achievements as a pioneering female climber. (Among other achievements, she held the women's altitude record for 28 years after her conquest of 23,000-ft Pinnacle Peak in 1906.) Robinson (Wayward Women) amusingly describes her as having "practically battered the Karakorams into submission, first treading them over with her squat, hob-nailed figure and then pinning them down on virgin maps and charts to take home for the various Geographical Societies of England and America to fight over." This is the account of their first Himalayan expedition, 1898-99, during which they reached the Karakoram Pass and explored the Biafo Glacier (Neate W124).

[8 x 12.5 cm.] . MARIN COUNTY: The next photo shows Lena and a companion at the "Summit at Mt. Temalpais" [Marin County, N. Calif.], with another of two men on a high cliff "Do you see yourself picking huckleberries." [size 9 x 9 cm.] . The next page shows two more photos "Large rock Mt. They spent four years in Tokyo doing missionary work at the Ushigome [Protestant] Church [in Japanese: Ushigome Haraikatamachi]. . OUT OF SEQUENCE: SAN FRANCISCO The next photos are out of date sequence: "Golden Gate Park, Frisco, Cal. Sept 20, 1900." Shows two photos. [size 9 x 9 cm.] . "Rice fields, and Mts. 1901, Tokio, Japan." and "Blooming cherry tree near Ushigome church, Japan." [size 9 x 9 cm.] . "Shinto Temple Gate, Tokio, Japan, 1901" and "Shinto temple." [size 9 x 9 cm.] . Street decoration for an Idol festival, 1901." and "Japan 1901." also "Street." [size 9 x 9 cm.] . "Buildings all belong to one man." and "1902." [size 9 x 9 cm.] . "S.S. Picnic Japan." and "Mist raning [sic for raining] fall Tokio, Japan." [size 9 x 9 cm.] . This photo shows Lena in a jinrikisha, with coolie puller. And "Mt. Ataga, Karuizawa Japan." [size 9 x 9 cm.] . "Idol gods along country roadside near Nikko, Japan." and "Village, large residence on the hill is for the Royal Family 1904" in color. [size 13.5 x 8.6 cm.] * OUT OF DATE SEQUENCE: SAN FRANCISCO & GOLDEN GATE: "Frisco, as we passed the Golden Gate." and "Sausalito from the ferry." [size 9 x 9 cm.] * HAWAII: "The Rio. That sank Feb. 15, 1901." and "The Wharf at Honolulu." [size 9 x 9 cm.] * The last is a large photo: "Oct. 15, 1904. Tokio, Japan." This shows nine people: 4 women & 5 men. There are no captions to identify the people but looking at an earlier photo with initials, its possible to know who they were. [18 x 12.5 cm.] *** We can surmise that Lena and her sisters and husband all went to Japan as missionaries and spent four years living at the Ushigome church. . During the summer swelter, like most Japanese of means and foreigners, these missionaries went to take up residence at Karuizawa. It was a cool mountain area, commonly use as an escape of the unbearable Tokyo sultry weather. **** The balance of the album has a series of clippings from a guide book on Egypt, Europe, and other places, perhaps relating to a return trip home ? ******* CONDITION: The photos are very clean, sharp images, no fading and no other defects. Each is laid down on black album pages, with important and informative white ink captions. * REFERENCES: We found a reference to Ms. Kammerer at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/county/nuckolls/NuckollsCemet eryK.htm. * Color scans of this and most other items are posted to our website.         Art Nouveau poster - Milanaise.

Prijs: € 2.150,- (incl. lijst).

Written to American Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Charles Edward Russell, whom he met as the editor of the "New York American," in full: "I will be glad to try some color on the proof you will send. I thought at the time an old pale yellow or ivory tint would improve the panel over the figure, and also the long white strip below, but I did think you would care for another painting. Could you have one or two proofs made on water color or Stein back paper? Anything like proof paper takes color so badly." Natural folds; very good(+) condition.         ORIGINAL HAND-PAINTED COLOR OTSU-E. [An Original Otsu-e Color Painting of a Samu

[Otsu n.d. ca. 1900, n.p.]. Single sheet painting, 25 x 71. cm., very good, hand-painted on thin hand-made Washi paper,. polychrome color, a few old mends on the verso, else clean,. good solid color, unsigned as usual. OBSCURE ORIGINAL ART. AN ORIGINAL HAND-PAINTED COLOR OTSU-E FOLK ART PAINTING OTSU-E" literally means "Pictures of Otsu city," located close to Kyoto. * Otsu-e were first painted in the early Edo Period [ca.1604] in Otsu City, Otani, Oiwake district. By and large these lovely folk-paintings were executed by unknown artists, unsigned and were sold as souvenirs to travelers along the Old Tokaido Highway, running along the East coast of Japan. * In the early 17th century, Otsu-e were first sold as religious paintings of Buddha to be hung in the homes of the common people, used as objects of worship. Other subjects became gradually popular such as Bijin [Japanese beauties], devils, pictures of the "Floating World' [Ukiyo-e], and Buddhist deities, animals of the twelve zodiac, devils and Samurai warriors. * Our example is of a famous Samurai warrior, likely taken from an historical legend. Because these works lacked text it was not possible to know just who the work represented, most likely during that time, most subjects were know to the people. Regardless, this Samurai is very energetic and a colorful representation of a famous [at that time] 13th or 14th century Japanese heroic figure. * Painted on three sheets of hand-made Washi paper, glued into one large sheet as was typical of the time, ready for framing and display. * CONDITION: The work is in fairly good condition, being painted on somewhat rough but natural hand-made Washi paper. There are a few old mended worm holes and places where the paper was very thin that were mended with other Washi paper from the back side. This does not greatly detract, given its age and otherwise lovely and powerful colors. * REFERENCE: The below goggle hit represents a good number of examples: http://www.google.com/search?q=otsu-e&hl=en&tbo=u&tbm=isch&s ource=univ&sa=X&ei=bE-gUPa-MYL2iwLQl4DgDg&ved=0CDwQsAQ&biw=8 19&bih=470 Page three from above show a few examples of warriors. ***** Color scans can be sent by email.
