        Hand Tinted Photograph [Tintype]

c.1900. Full plate tintype photograph (7 1/4" X 10") of William and (his wife) Susannah Carney, the Sergeant wearing his Medal of Honor. Scratched on the back: "Sgt. Wm. Carney, 54th Mass. Vols. 1900" (the date might be 1901). Left side corners clipped, flaking of the emulsion around, and to, his right leg and shoes, surface craquelure, the tin wavy, else very good condition, the image fantastic. Rare. The Emancipation Proclamation (Jan. 1, 1863) officially authorized recruiting black soldiers for the first time in the Civil War, so in March, William Harvey Carney joined the, all black, 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, commanded by 26 year-old Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Because of Carney's education and leadership skills (he had studied to be a Preacher) he quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant. In July, the 54th Massachusetts was sent to James Island, South Carolina, where, on July 18, Shaw offered to lead the charge against Fort Wagner (the attack on Fort Wagner was depicted in the film Glory). During the battle Shaw and his flag bearer were pinned down beneath the parapet of the fort. Trying to rally his men forward, Shaw and the flag bearer fell, both mortally wounded. In that moment, Carney became both sides of his African-American hyphen. He seized the colors, prevented the flag from touching the ground, struggled up the parapet and, though wounded in the legs, chest, and arm, planted the colors at the top of the rampart. Despite his wounds and the heavy gunfire around him, Carney was able to keep the flag aloft, though he, and the rest of the 54th Massachusetts, remained pinned down until reinforcements arrived and the shredded unit was able to withdraw. Struggling back to Union lines while still carrying the colors, Carney collapsed saying: "Boys, the old flag never touched the ground." He spent the next 11 months recuperating, but was never fit again, and because of his wounds, he received an honorable disability discharge in June, 1864. Carney's Medal of Honor citation reads: "When the color sergeant was shot down, this soldier grasped the flag, led the way to the parapet, and planted the colors thereon. When the troops fell back he brought off the flag, under a fierce fire in which he was twice severely wounded." Most Civil War Congressional Medals of Honor were awarded decades after the action, and some African-Americans received theirs before Carney, but his was for the earliest battle and he is unanimously acclaimed (Google away) as, "the first African-American Medal of Honor winner." The National Archives puts it plainly: "Sergeant William Carney of New Bedford, MA, became the first African-American awarded the Medal of Honor for most distinguished gallantry in action..." And states it just as clearly: "William H. Carney, transcended good to become great, and was the first black U. S. soldier to earn the Medal of Honor.".

        Anti Horse Thief Association Photograph

Springfield, MO: Duncan Studio. Photograph of the Anti Horse Thief Association mounted on gray cardboard. Photograph measures 8" x 10", not including mount, and is in very good condition. Photo has minor chipping to bottom right corner, light ink markings on left edge. Image is quite detailed and clear. Dated between 1900 and 1910. The photograph was published by A.B. Duncan of Duncan Studio in Springfield, Missouri. This image depicts the Nichols Sub Order, No. 300, of the Anti Horse Thief Association gathered together in the Public Square of Springfield, Missouri. Some buildings are clearly signed such as Weaver Shoes, Nathan Clothing Co and Ozark Land Co. which help to identify the location. When this scene was photographed the popular forms of transportation were carriages and horses, with only one automobile depicted. The form of transportation and the number of stars on the American flag (45) help to distinguish a date for the photo. The men of the Anti Horse Thief Association are almost all on horseback, many having a badge or ribbon pinned to their jackets and most staring at the camera. The Anti Horse Thief Association was organized in Clark County, Missouri in 1854; its principle goal was the protection of property, especially horses, at a time when horses were frequently stolen by thieves. The Anti Horse Thief Association was not a vigilante group, preferring to catch the criminals and hand them over to the court system. The Association quickly grew and in 1916 had over forty thousand members in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado, and South Dakota. The emblem of the Association, the horseshoe, represents Humanity, Charity and Justice. A great photograph of a respected league of crime fighters. .

        Account book].

Northamptonshire [England]. 1900-1931 - The personal account book of an English provincial bobby posted in Northamptonshire (variously at Northampton, Kettering, Oundle, Paulerspury, Daventry, East Haddon and Naseby) recording every arrest he made in the course of a 32-year career.Despite early stints in Northampton and Kettering, Clarke's experience was based in smaller villages and his notebook is a valuable fascinating account of English rural life at the opening of the twentieth century. The crimes here records include drunkenness, use of obscene language, vagrancy, poaching, gambling, begging, petty theft, domestic abuse, animal cruelty, unlicensed use of firearms, bicycle and motoring offences and playing football on the highway. Clarke was an assiduous recorder, itemising every arrest and its outcome, then, at the end of the year making a final reckoning. So, for the year 1911 he sums up, in red ink: '24 proceeded against. 15 fined £10,18.0. 5 sent to prison 16 months 21 days. 1 dismissed. 2 warned of reward. I bound over for 12 months'. The hundreds of arrests made over the course of a career of some 32 years is totalled in pencil at the end: '32 years service, Cases 523, Fines £359.15.5. Sent to Prison 53 years 6 months 0 weeks 5 days. Pay £5272. 5 [shillings]. 7 1/2 [pence].One interesting development is, of course, the rise of motor transport and its attendant offences. In the early years Clarke apprehends very few motorists (but rather more cyclists), while towards 1930 the vast majority of his successes (and revenue) involve reckless and speeding drivers from all over England.A few excerpts give a flavour:'October 30th [1900] Danile Bailey John Abrahams Edward Smith & Jim Mallard charged with stealing Fruit valued 5/- the property of Jethro Johnson Fine and Costs 7/6 each.''Dec 16th [1900] Frederick Albert Coe, scholar, age 13 Abbey St Daventry Charged with stealing a Dutch Cheese Valued 2/6 the property of Messrs Bayley Brothers & was ordered to receive 6 strokes with Birch'.'March 3d [1901] Richard Clarke Cycle Maker Coventry charged with being a wandering Lunatic at Daventry committed to Berrywood Asylum'.'19 August [1909] Fred[eric]k Juggings . Commercial Traveller charged with Indecently assaulting Mollie Simpson age 5 yrs at Weston Favell.         Madame Bovary.

Paris: Bibliothèque-Charpentier, 1900. James Joyce's personal copy of Flaubert's novel of "provincial manners," one of the most controversial and influential novels of the nineteenth century, first serialized in La Revue de Paris in 1856. In the character of Emma Bovary, an unhappy wife ruined by her romantic aspirations, Flaubert projected his own struggle with the challenges of realism: "Madame Bovary, c'est moi." Flaubert was, in fact, prosecuted for his heroine's adultery, but was acquitted of obscenity. The censorship trial made the novel a bestseller when it appeared in book form early in 1857. This paperback édition définitive, which includes transcripts of the Bovary trial, bears Joyce's early ownership signature, dated June 1901, when he was nineteen. Flaubert's writing was a lifelong touchstone for Joyce. In "The Day of the Rabblement," an essay published later in 1901, Joyce cites Madame Bovary as the starting point of modern literary realism, and the Bovary trial would strikingly prefigure the legal challenges to Joyce's Ulysses, another work featuring a complicated, unapologetically unfaithful wife. Irish critic Ernest Boyd (1887-1946), editor of Ireland's Literary Renaissance and former owner of this copy, drew a direct parallel between the Bovary trial and the American trial of Ulysses. Boyd noted that the French court was capable of considering Flaubert's novel as a complete work of literature, with intention and context, "not as if it were a dirty postal card," in contrast to "the ineffable buffoonery and low philistinism of similar trials in America," which resulted in a decade-long ban on Ulysses (The Dial, April 1921). When the American ban was finally overturned in 1933, Joyce wrote to T.S. Eliot that Random House was publishing Judge Woolsey's decision as part of the first American edition: "I suppose like the édition définitive of Madame Bovary." Provenance: James Joyce to unknown Irish owner(s) to Ernest Boyd to Thomas Quinn Curtis to Alexander Neubauer. The modern binding dates from Boyd's ownership; he has signed across the repaired front free endpaper. This copy is a primary source for Scarlett Baron's Strandentwining Cable: Joyce, Flaubert, and Intertextuality (OUP, 2012). A great association. Full modern red buckram lettered in gilt, yellow publisher's wrappers bound in. Ink signature of James Joyce to top corner of front wrapper; signatures of James Joyce (dated June 1901) and Ernest Boyd to front free endpaper. Bookplate of Alexander Neubauer to front pastedown. Front wrapper chipped and mounted, early repairs to front free endpaper and rear wrapper, text block embrowned.

Klaus Bölling (1928-2014 Publizist), Mildred Scheel (1932-1985), Franz Burda (1903-1985 Verleger), Heinrich Harrer (1912-2006 Bergsteiger), Johannes Heesters (1903-2011 Schauspieler), Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934 General), Reinhard Mohn (1921-2009 Verleger), Henri Nannen (1913-1996 Verleger), Sigi Sommer (1914-1996 Schriftsteller) Axel Springer (1912-1985 Verleger), Egon Bahr (1922-2015 Politiker), Josef Ertl (1925-2000 Politiker), Georg Leber (1920-2012 Politiker), Annemarie Renger (1919-2008 Politikerin), Franz Josef Strauß (1915-1988 Politiker) und Kurt Waldheim (1918-2007 Österreicher). Beispiele: Brief an Franz Josef Strauß vom 18. An Marianne Strauß 27. Sept. An Henry Kissinger 2. An Willy Brandt 9. An Willy Brandt 12. An Fidel Castro 18. An Helmut Schmidt 5.

n.d. (ca. 1900), S.l. (France) - 8vo. 72 pp. numbered in pencil in upper corners, of which 3 numbered pages are blank; front and back of the textblock are padded with unnumbered blank leaves. Contemporary French "repousse" binding in the Art Nouveau style: large interlocking leaves and flowers, with gilt fillets; comb-marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, smooth spine unlettered. A volume of great charm and considerable bibliographical interest: the binding was executed in the "Cuir-cisele" (cut leather) manner. Cuir-cisele is a decorative technique in which a knife is used to cut a low relief design into the leather binding. The positive forms are left intact while the negative space has been cut away. "On the leather surface we see a design, sometimes simple, sometimes elaborate, which is not impressed on it with stamps or dies, but worked freely and directly by the craftsman by means of a simple pointed tool, blunt or sharp. In this simple way he either cut, scratcched, or merely engraved by pressure the outline of his decorative design; very often he would then stipple the background with some other simple tool, so as to make the contours of his design stand out more clearly" (SOURCE: E.P. Goldschmidt, "Some Cuir-Cisele Bookbindings in English Libraries" in: The Library, Fourth Series, Vol. XIII, no. 4, March, 1933, p. 337). The text is likewise curious: the pages were created by means of lithography, and colored throughout with watercolor by an expert hand. No title-page was ever bound herein. The entire production seems to have been a very personal one. In excellent state, suitable for exhibition and study. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

13.5 cm x 22 cm. IX, 560 pages. Original Hardcover. Very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear, for example very slight rubbing at top of spine. "Degeneration is one of the most important documents of the fin de siècle, the years between the 1880s and 1900 when the robust views of the nineteenth century clashed with the heightened sensibilities of a searching and disillusioned generation. . . . [It] is a mirror of conflicting attitudes which are, in fact, contemporary with our present cultural dilemmas. But culture itself always reflects the state of society. Max Nordau presents us with a searchlight whose beams reflect the kind of world [we] have made for [ourselves.]"George L. Mosse in his introduction to the 1968 edition. (Amazon) Max Simon Nordau (born Simon Maximilian Südfeld July 29, 1849 January 23, 1923), was a Zionist leader, physician, author, and social critic. He was a co-founder of the World Zionist Organization together with Theodor Herzl, and president or vice president of several Zionist congresses. As a social critic, he wrote a number of controversial books, including The Conventional Lies of Our Civilisation (1883), Degeneration (1892), and Paradoxes (1896). Although not his most popular or successful work whilst alive, Degeneration is the book most often remembered and cited today. (Wikipedia)
