The Winning of the West (with autograph manuscript)

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1900. First edition. Very Good +. The famous Daniel Boone edition with an original leaf of the author's manuscript for his chapter on St. Clair's 1791 defeat tipped in to the first volume. This set, number 116 of 200 copies. The manuscript leaf is heavily edited and reads as follows: "days of Scandinavian supremacy at sea resulted in no spread of the Scandinavian tongue or culture; and the temporary maritime prosperity of the North German cities bore no permanent fruit or conquest for the German people. The only nations that profited by the expansion beyond the seas, and that built up in alien continents vast commonwealths with the law, the language, the creed, and the culture, no less than the blood, of the parent stocks, were those that during the centuries of expansion, possessed power on the ocean, -- Spain, Portugal, France, Holland, and, above all, England. Even a strong race, in its prime, and given the..." Four thick volumes, (10" x 7"). Bound in what appears to be the publisher's 3/4 morocco over marbled boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, the other edges rough-trimmed. Volume 4 has been rebacked, preserving the original spine panel, the other volumes are untouched and all joints holding well. Moderate foxing to text pages, otherwise a nice, tight set with clean plates. Complete with five folding maps, 103 plates, rubricated title-pages and decorative half-titles. Laid in is the publisher's printed slip regarding the care of the set when new. [Howes, USiana R433. ]. Very Good +.

[Faux Books][Folk Art Mechanical Toy Book] Holy Bible

Wood boards. . Very Good. Highly unusual fun piece of folk art, with the "Bible" springing up with the touch of a lever. Most definitely one-of-a-kind! N.d., circa 1900, possibly earlier. In size, like a 4to. 33 by 25 cm, 14 cm thick. The bible resembles an early 19th century leather bible. Here, though, the boards and sides are of wood, with the spine a heavy cloth which is painted to look like leather, and with the paint looks not unlike a paper mache composition. The snap is on the fore-edge, with the metal lever on the top. All sides are painted in gilt. Moderate wear throughout, as befitting an old heirloom bible.

Japan n.d. ca 1900-1920's. A green cloth photo album, faded. green leaves, 23 x 39 cm., very good, contains 100 cards in. all: 71 hand-colored, 15 color, 14 b.w., cards, mounted in. slits provide. A very nice period collection. S C A R C E. A LOVELY PERIOD WORK WITH A WIDE VARIETY OF COLOR EXAMPLES A stunning and beautiful collection of postcards, mostly un- used, lovely hand colored photographs from about 1900-1910, with four from the 1920's-30's. The album begins with a group of four Japanese women and a young girl, under a wisteria garden, another shows a woman dishing up a bowl of rice, then a lovely young girl plyaing the Koto; other views show flower arrangement, New Years Kimono, winter scenes with women holding a large umbrellaand with a hood for head protection and another shows two girls reading a book; a girl sewing, holding a baby, riding a Jinrikshaw, in the garden, more of girls reading books, doing household chores, playing the Shamisen, poses for New Years, cleaning house, making dinner and changing her Kimono, with friends and hair dressing. This album shows the Japanese woman at her daily chores, wearing her finest Kimono for New Years or other celebrations, Zen arts of flower and tea, cute poses, dressed up to visit friends, riding the ricksha, playing music, eating, dancing and just about everything in her life as a daughter, sister, mother, and wife. The black and white photos show similar poses, 4-5 appear to be 1920's movie stars most in Kimono, one in a Western style dress. These beautiful photo postcards show Japanese women at their best wearing stunning and elaborate Kimono, with their tradition- al coiffeur, holding an umbrella, wearing Geta [sandals]. Some are studio posed, others taken in a live setting. A good insight to period Japanese women and their costume and traditions.       Privately published, Colorado Springs, Colorado 1900 - Beautifully produced burgundy leather covers and binding with gold print on front cover and spine. Album dimensions: 14 inches in width by 10 inches in height by 5-1/2 inches in depth. Binding manufactured by Out West P. & S. Co., Colorado Springs. Bookplate of Charles L. Tutt and Josephine Thayer Tutt on front paste-down. Charles Tutt was Spencer Penrose's closest business partner and friend. Together, they purchased and managed numerous mining and milling properties in the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District. They then parlayed their resources into the Utah Copper Copper, along with the Guggenheims, and other national mining interests. With the enormous profits from this Company, Tutt and Penrose then began plans for The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, along many other Pikes Peak Region enterprises. The Standard Milling and Smelting Co. gold reduction plant in Colorado City was part of Tutt and Penrose's United States Reduction and Refining Company -- an agglomeration of several gold reduction in the Pikes Peak Region, including Cripple Creek, Florence, Cyanide, and Colorado City. The Standard plant was meant to consolidate a good percentage of the gold shipments from the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District and process them in one location, reducing costs for both mine and reduction-mill owners. Not long after the Standard Mill's completion, the Western Federation of Miners called for a labor strike, beginning on the premises of the Standard property (1903). This strike devolved into one of Colorado's longest and most violent, encompassing nearly all of the Pikes Peak Region. The Cripple Creek Strike lasted until the summer of 1904, and was only resolved after Adjutant General Sherman Bell and the Colorado National Guard enacted martial law in the District. This album of 50 original 7-1/2 inch by 9-1/2 inch albumen photographs by Colorado Springs photographer, Alfred Freeman, was commissioned and specially made for Charles L. Tutt. The location of another similar album has yet to be identified. Therefore, this a unique record of the construction of one of the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District's most important gold refining works. All photographs are in near fine or better condition. Contrasts and tones are generally strong to excellent, making for superb detail. Unique record of a pivotal mining operation in Colorado history. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Japanese Leporello with 24 Original Mounted Signed Watercolors, Circa Early 20th Century

Japan. Leporello. Very Good. N.d., circa 1900. 183 by 151 mm, when closed. Mounted watercolors are of waterflowl, a crane, other birds, flowers, fish, insects, landscapes, a fantastical depiction of men painting the foot and leg of a giant (or tiny men doing that of an ordinary man, or some other interpretation), a giant mask being lifted by children, other human studies. The watercolors are notable for their bright, vivid colors, their sharpness and precision of detail, their elegant spare composition. While each illustration can stand on its own, and the subject matter is by no means uniform, there is something quite alluring about the entire ensemble, as if they are meant to be of one piece. Based on the chop impressions, though, they appear to be by several artists. To appreciate their beauty, of course, one has to see images, or better yet, the pictures in person. Light to moderate wear of the fabric pastedown on the cover, with light soiling and some minor holes or spots of worn fabric. Entirely clean within, and all the watercolors are bright.

Construction of London Underground Railway [Tube] Station (c 1900 Tunnelling Photograph)

London: E. Milner, 1900. Good. Large B&W photograph mounted onto card, developed image measures 18 inches [45.7 cm] tall x 23-1/4 inches [59 cm] wide, card mount measures 26 inches tall x 31 inches wide. Signed in the lower left corner "E. Milner / Photo. / 250 Wandsworth Bridge Ra / SW", with the following identification notes in ink on verso: "William Thomas (W.T.) Oliver standing / near ladder with white collar / not in front of ladder. {Lived at White Bank House / Chesterfield England / Home of Thomas Oliver, uncle of W.T. Oliver}". Image with scratches, tiny dings and a small corner crease at lower right corner. Card mount is in poor condition, slightly curled with large pieces missing from bottom the edge (one 10 inch piece still present) and both corners, scratches and a hole near bottom edge, none of which affect the image. London's Underground (Tube) was the world's first underground railway and this image, showing the construction of a large underground station, dates from c. 1900 when Milner was working for them. "The railway company which employed him [Milner] wanted some evidence of the state of buildings near or above their lines in case of legal proceedings against them." (see Walker - Empty Streets: Earls Court Road 1904 - Part One (2012), Kensington and Chelsea Library Archives). The image is very unusual in that it shows the tunneling process c. 1900 with multi-level staging, workers, businessmen, rigging and the back-end excavation removal setup. Whereby, excavated material is removed via a chute and then placed onto one of the three sets of laid tracks available for eventual disposal via a mining railcar. William Thomas (W.T.) Oliver, a successfull tunnel building contractor, is identified in ink on photograph's verso. Milner's photographs are also in the Camden and Westminster Archives. The London Transport Museum holds the only other early (uncredited) underground station construction image found (the British Libary have the same image as L.T.M. but show a reversed image). An important photograph by Milner, who lived in Wandsworth (hence the "250 Wandsworth Bridge Ra SW" address signature) and trained with Francis Frith, a well known Victorian Photographer. Additional shipping may be requied for this oversize item.

Colorado, Montana, and other locations, 1900. Overall good to very good condition. A massive archive of family correspondence with important western American content. Chester Warren Burton (1831- 1916) was born in Portland, New York, to War of 1812 Veteran, Hiram Burton and his wife Harriet. Burton's grandfather and uncles also fought in the War of 1812, with one uncle, Salmon Burton, losing his life as a result of wounds received at the Battle of Little York, Canada, 1813. Burton married fellow Portland resident, M. Freedom Harris (1838-1916) in 1861, and together they had three children. Freedom was heavily involved in the Universalist Social Society, which provided aid to local soldiers. Although Burton was drafted during the Civil War on Aug. 18, 1863, he provided a substitute named James Kelly who deserted after one month of service. An 1881 Portland/Chautauqua atlas includes a brief biography of Burton, identified as a "fruit grower" who also worked as a civil engineer for six years and served as an assessor. He was also described as a "Universalist and a republican." The present archive includes approximately seventy-five pre-Civil War letters, documents, land indentures, and more, which focus primarily on Burton's grandfather, Simon, and his father, Hiram, as well as Freedom's father, Joseph Elliot Harris. Some of the correspondence pertains to the family's pursuit of bounty claims owed Simon in Indiana. Hiram Burton's handwritten application for a pension in which he outlines his service as a War of 1812 Veteran, which he submitted in 1871, also accompanies the archive. Another noteworthy, pre-war item is a penciled note calling for a public demonstration against the introduction of slavery into the territories, dated March 1861. The collection contains close to 100 letters, documents, and other ephemera dating from the 1860s, including Civil War-era correspondence, such as a small batch of letters written to Burton from soldiers from Co. D of the 9th New York Cavalry, namely James Ogden who enlisted as a corporal and was promoted to bugler (which he noted in a December 1861 letter); and Charles Crosby, who enlisted as a corporal and was later promoted to sergeant. Burton also corresponded with Joe E. Cook of Western Pennsylvania, who wrote in a Jan. 20, 1861 letter: "Surely I 'Hurrah for Anderson,' and groan for our treason-fostering President. It is folly to predict on the events that are transpiring, and which are in immediate connection and dependence with so vacillating and treacherous old Benedict Batch. But, let the events take whatever turn they may, at the beginning; ever so horrid and bloody, the result will be glorious. I cannot believe but that we are about to witness the worst stage on which this nation has ever acted, and do tremble when I think of the guillotine of vengeance that the southern people are raising higher and higher above their own heads, trampling with haughty tread and iron heel over the mute-floored powdermills that for years have been accumulating with black fulminating dust of hate." Another letter written early in the war to "Friend Chet" from Cook includes strong content about joining the war effort, the Constitution, and the issue of slavery. In the Oct. 14, 1861 letter Cook states, in part: "With Gerrit Smith I abhor war, but with him I am 'sick of the shams of this war' and am quite unable to decide what will be the eventuation of the Administration in regard to Slavery. If it shall decide to emancipate unreservedly then the war will be protracted and very bloody, but if they shall continue as the watch-word, 'Vive la Constitution,' then the war will be short...." He goes on to mention John Brown Jr. taking a number of men from Erie County, where he resided, as well as Crawford County, Pennsylvania. A small group of war-date documents pertain to Burton being drafted, including a partially-printed draft notice from the provost marshal's office, with a railroad pass to the muster location in Dunkirk, New York, and two small printed notices, one a circular on types of exemptions, the other outlining the procedure for supplying a substitute or paying $300 to Internal Revenue. The circular emphasized that the drafted individual must appear in person with receipt or send substitute, or be charged with desertion. Burton's draft deferment is also included. Some of the most interesting Civil War-period letters in this archive were written from Denver, Colorado, by Burton's sister, Maria, and her husband, J. Billings. They concern the sizable population of southerners in the Colorado gold fields and in Denver itself, and the agitation among them to claim the territory for the Confederacy. In a letter dated Sept. 5, 1861, believed to be from Maria, panic in Denver over a possible rebel invasion/insurrection is discussed: "We are having exciting times here & have had for the last 4 weeks. There are a great many secessionist here & they talk pretty tough, but as yet have done nothing but talk. There is a regiment raising here for home protection & it does not suit the southern Chivalry here. They make all sorts threats & there are all sorts of rumors fresh ones every day. First comes about the Texas Rangers then the Indians then the secessionists from the mountains & I suppose the next thing will be something else. The first United States court met last Monday & the Grand Jury has been doing something I should think by the way the Rebels are leaving town this afternoon & I hope that it will have the effect to keep them away. One of them is our nearest neighbor & the big gun among them. I think the grand jury must have a traitor among them. I hope that he may get his just desserts....There is a great deal of anxiety to hear from the states here to know what is going on there. Times are very dull here and have been all summer. Money is out of the is dicker, barter & trade. There are a great many men in the mountains that are taking out money very fast & then again there are a great many that are making nothing. I have some property here that is very valuable if there was money here to pay for it." In a follow-up letter, dated Oct. 20, 1861, Maria mentions the increased level of security in Denver: "Home Guard has 150 men stationed throughout town every night. Men serve duty every four days." Burton's brother-in-law, Billings, provides an interesting description of early Denver, and he mentions the following incident in a letter of Dec. 14, 1863, while speaking of the local sheriff: "I have not been able to see him yet as he went South about the time you left. He will be back tomorrow, then I suppose he will take Van Horn up to Central and hang him." Billings was likely referring to William S. Van Horn, who was convicted of murdering a gentleman by the name of Josiah Copeland with the help of his mistress, although she was not charged with the crime. Van Horn was taken to Denver and held in the Arapahoe County Jail in an attempt to avoid a lynching, and on Dec. 18, 1863, he was hanged in front of a crowd of thousands in Central City. This was the first legal execution carried out under territorial authority. Two letters written to Burton from an unidentified homesteader in Montana, between February and the "First day of Spring" 1867, feature rich content about the Gold Rush and surviving the winter out west. In the Feb. 27 letter, he offers a detailed description of the machine used in hard-rock gold mining to pulverize the quartz to remove the gold, which is then "amalgamated" with mercury to extract the gold. In the second letter he describes in great detail stampeding during the harsh Montana winters. He states: "You must not call the Stampeder foolish. He came here to make a big thing, has worked all summer for wages which though good will never approach riches...a stampede occurs. The weather is mild; he has enough money to buy an outfit, and with those prospects before him...home by another winter. Is he to blame for not seeing the terrors of a winter's stampede in the rocky mountains! I studied my plans carefully, and know that they will operate, among which I was to let out the stampeding, but my notion is to move and the fact that I was unable to purchase an outfit has left me still thirsting for gold...." The archive also includes hundreds of post-war documents, manuscripts and related ephemera, such as letters from children and grandchildren to Burton and his wife in Chautauqua, and while wintering in Florida; many church pamphlets; and Women's Christian Temperance Union pamphlets. A vast and research-rich archive for Civil War and Western American scholars and collectors.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Sister Carrie

1900 - DREISER, Theodore. Sister Carrie. New York: Doubleday, Page, 1900. Octavo, original red cloth. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000.Exceptionally rare first edition of Dreiser’s controversial first novel.According to biographer W. A. Swanberg, Dreiser “seemed to have had no inkling that he was creating a revolutionary work. He wrote with a compassion for human suffering that was exclusive with him in America. He wrote with a tolerance for transgression that was as exclusive and as natural” (De Grazia, 101). He was aware, however, that others would find the novel controversial. Even before it was submitted he had made attempts to revise, or “clean up” his novel, at the urging of his first wife, Sarah Osborne White, “Jug.” With her help and that of his good friend Arthur Henry, he made many changes and cut an estimated 36,000 words from the manuscript. Franklin Doubleday, who was alarmed when he returned from Europe to find that his firm had taken the work, “went on to publish Carrie, but on his own terms. He personally edited the proofs and insisted to Dreiser that all the profanities be removed and certain ‘suggestive’ passages altered… The much-laundered Carrie became spotless; worse-yet, as Dreiser’s biographer Richard Lingeman has said, Carrie’s cheap-looking binding and lettering ‘would have been more appropriate on a plumbing manual.’ Frank Doubleday carried out the terms of the contract for Carrie in the most minimal way possible, ‘in the hope that it would not attract much notice” (DeGrazia, 103). Because of the alterations Sister Carrie avoided court prosecution but Dreiser felt it was “stillborn.” The expurgated text made Carrie’s motivations incoherent, and bad reviews killed the novel on its first publication. Dreiser was deeply affected by these struggles and did not publish another novel for ten years. H.L. Mencken spearheaded the novel’s critical reappraisal, and it came to be recognized as a groundbreaking and influential novel of American realism and naturalism. As Sinclair Lewis said of Dreiser in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1930, “without his pioneering, I doubt if any of us could, unless we liked to be sent to jail, seek to express life, beauty and terror” (Parker & Kermode, 2). Doubleday’s records indicate, “the first edition consisted of 1008 copies, of which 129 were sent out for review, 465 were sold, and the balance, 423 copies, were turned over to [remainder house] J. F. Taylor & Company” (Orton, Dreiseriana, 17). This first edition is extremely rare. In 1929 Vrest Orton wrote that Sister Carrie “is much scarcer than is generally supposed… A book printed in 1900 to the number of only 1008 copies, nearly half of them remaindered (everyone knows the fate of remainders) leaving only 546 actually sold to the trade, is, in 1930, a very scarce book. In the course of 30 years, any edition of 1000 copies of a novel will, for the most part, become lost, destroyed or worn out. And most copies that do exist, will not do so in a very good state” (Orton, 18). McDonald 28-32. Orton 16-19. Owner inscription on half title.Scattered foxing and soiling to text as often, inner paper hinges split, closed tear to final leaf, light wear to sound original cloth. A very good copy. Extremely rare and desirable. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        London to Ladysmith via Pretoria

London: Longmans, Green, & Co. 1900 - Longmans, Green, & Co., London, 1900. First edition, first printing. British first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. The leaf advertising the second impression of The River War [one side] and Seventh Thousand of The Malakand Field Force [the other side] is present as are the 32 pages with 50,000-10/99 [last page]. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armoured train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election".
