        Savrola.

London: Longmans, Green & Co.,, 1900. A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania. Octavo, original green cloth, title gilt to the spine and to the front board with "signature" block, black surface-paper endpapers. Somewhat rubbed, and bumped at the extremities, versos of free endpapers browned, pale toning to the text and a scattter of light foxing, but remains a very good copy. Bookseller's ticket of Alfred A. Seale of Southsea to the front pastedown. First UK edition, second state with the title page a cancel without copyright details verso. Signed on the half-title; "Winston S. Churchill, 1916", and distinctly unusual thus. Churchill's only novel, and his "first book, in the sense that it was well started before the Malakand Campaign got under way" (Woods, Artillery of Words, p.56). Summoned north by Sir Bindon Blood, Churchill declared the novel "indefinitely shelved". A melodramatic tale of a liberal revolution in an autocratic Mediterranean state, "the novel is at once a political testament and a writing-out of a stage of personal development" (p.60). While not exactly repudiating the novel, Churchill did his best to forget it, saying in My Early Life that he had "consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it", consequently signed or inscribed copies are rarely encountered. This copy with a manuscript label to the front free endpaper reading; "To be sold by Auction, Councillor Sydney Gimson offers 10/-". Gimson was the owner of an engineering works and a secularist councillor in Leicester, who involved himself in fund-raising for hospitals during the First World War, and it is possible that Churchill's signature was obtained, and the auction organised, as part of such activities (Newitt, The Who's Who of Radical Leicester).

Publisher's green cloth over glazed pictorial multi-colored boards. A fine copy in the very scarce pictorial dust jacket (slightly chipped at extremities). A fine collection of early reprints of the Walter Crane 'Baby' books. A very fine set, each in their scarce original dust jacket. The Baby's Opera was originally published by Routledge, London in 1877. The Baby's Bouquet was published one year later in 1878 as a companion work to The Baby's Opera. The Baby's Own Aesop was published by Routledge, London in 1886. All three titles appeared in one book entitled Triplets (1894).All three of the dust jackets advertise Walter Crane's Pan Pipes which was published in 1883."The coloured illustrations [in the Baby's Opera] mark the beginning of a subtler colour with wider range, including light blues, yellows, and delicate brick reds. The drawings had an unmistakable influence on Kate Greenaway whose book Under the Window [1879] was to establish her success as an illustratorÂ… The book included a combination of favourite nursery rhymes with accompanying pictures and music, which proved attractive to mothers and children. Crane's sister Lucy did the translating for the music. The five shilling book sold 10,000 copies and was reprinted in a second editionÂ… Crane, who believed good book design to include all aspects of the book, knew the importance of the cover design. Perhaps the French-printed colour poster luring prospective buyers was the inspiration for such a conscious effort by illustrators to design an appealing book cover. This book [The Baby's Aesop] with its short text and large illustrations was designed to appeal to the railway traveller. The design is based upon classical motifs: the Doric-columned porch, the youth in Greek garb, and the overall formal balance." (Engen, pp. 20-21).Engen, pp. 98 & 100 (describing the first Routledge editions).

        The Works.

Berlin Berlin Photographic Co. c 1900 - Large folio (69 x 52 cm). Edition limited to 200 copies. portrait and 90 mounted photogravures on india paper, some spotting to mounts, portrait lightly offset onto title, original green straight-grain morocco, gilt, by H.Wood, with cloth flaps, uncut, lightly rubbed, flap hinges tender, endpapers creased, a very good example of an uncommon work A fine compilation published shortly after the artist's death. Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, 1st Baronet ARA (28 August 1833 – 17 June 1898) was a British artist and designer closely associated with the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, who worked closely with William Morris on a wide range of decorative arts. As a founding partner in Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. Burne-Jones was closely involved in the rejuvenation of the tradition of stained glass art in Britain. In addition to painting and stained glass, Burne-Jones worked in a variety of crafts; including designing ceramic tiles, jewellery, tapestries, mosaics and book illustration, most famously designing woodcuts for the Kelmscott Press's Chaucer in 1896. In the middle years of the twentieth century Burne-Jones's reputation suffered, along with those of other British Victorian painters. However, two monographic exhibitions — the first organized by the Arts Council and held at the Hayward Gallery in London and at Southampton and Birmingham in 1975–6, and the second to mark the centenary of the artist's death, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and subsequently shown in Birmingham and Paris — have clearly established Burne-Jones as one of the geniuses of British painting. The Tate Gallery's 1997 exhibition, 'The Age of Rossetti, Burne-Jones & Watts: Symbolism in Britain, 1860–1910', represented Burne-Jones as a key figure in the wider context of European symbolism.         Drawings and Designs of a Lace Business

France, c. 1900. Hardcover. Very Good+. Three volumes, folio (about 14 x 20 inches); black cloth, handwritten paper label on front board ("Dessins divers," "Gekaufte Dessins," "Dessins Loyot"). "Divers" and "Gekaufte" each contain about 100 (or more) lace designs, drawn in pencil on onion skin in a range of sizes, and tipped onto stubs. Sometimes with color or heightened in white or gold, many of them folding out to display long "panoramas" of pattern. "Loyot" contains 250+ designs, ranging in size from 1 large (nearly 14 x 20 inches) to 10 smaller drawings tipped to the recto and verso of each of its 60 leaves. Drawn in pencil, frequently colored and/or heightenned in gold or white. Showcasing a great variety of designs, from elaborate floral and swirling ivy, to geometric patterns that flirt with becoming art deco, and patterns with an Oriental or Moroccan influence. Some chipping and wrinkling to some of the designs on onion skin that were placed toward the very front and very back of "Divers" and "Gekaufte," particularly where panoramas were folded back incorrectly. "Loyot" is in fine condition. A wonderful collection. Displays beautifully.

Denne særlige kunstart dyrkes stadig i Firenze. [Gyldendals store Danske].

Copies of Letters from Lieut. the Honble. Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe A.D.C. to Field Marshal Lord Raglan written during the Crimean War to different members of his family, &c.

c.1900. 2 volumes, quarto. Early 20th-century red cloth, gilt lettered spines, red speckled edges. 418-page carbon-copy typescript, rectos only. 3 hand-drawn maps (2 coloured). Spines sunned, a few light abrasions to covers, inner hinges split but sound, but overall in very good condition. A fascinating family archive of 144 frank and detailed letters in typescript, from the originals, that Calthorpe wrote to his family and friends, spanning the years from 8 April 1854 to 24 July 1855. Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe (1831-1912), 7th Baron Calthorpe, was aide-de-camp to Lord Raglan, commander of the British expeditionary force in the Crimea. The letters differ considerably from the versions polished for publication and issued anonymously as Letters from Head-Quarters; or, the Realities of the. War in the Crimea (1856 and three editions by 1858). Of particular interest is a lengthy account (letter 57) of the Charge of the Light Brigade, accompanied by a hand-drawn, coloured map of dispositions at Balaclava. In this letter, Calthorpe puts the blame for that fateful charge squarely on Captain Louis Nolan, who was killed in the attack: "Captain Nolan went, but very much exceeded his orders: telling Lord Lucan that he was to charge the Lt: Cavalry at all hazards and retake the guns. Lord Lucan said it was madness to attempt it, and that it was taking the Light Cavalry to certain destruction. However, the order was of course obeyed." Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed from Charles Somerville Orde (1859-1937, banker and captain in the 2nd (Norfolk and Suffolk) Great Yarmouth Volunteer Corps), addressed to "My dear Calthorpe" (dated 25 September 1901), presumably Somerset Frederick Gough-Calthorpe (1862-1940), 8th Baron Calthorpe (whose large armorial bookplate is present in both volumes), son of Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe; it was this member of the Gough-Calthorpe family who was responsible for producing the two volumes ("It was a labour to undertake to type so much - so well done - I congratulate you").

London to Ladysmith via Pretoria. FIRST EDITION

London: Longmans, Green, & Co. 1900 - Longmans, Green, & Co., London, 1900. First edition, first printing. British first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. The leaf advertising the second impression of 'The River War' [one side] and Seventh Thousand of 'The Malakand Field Force' [the other side] is present at the rear as are the 32 pages of adverts with 50,000-10/99 at the base of the last page are present. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armoured train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". In the original cloth binding with signed/dated end paper and all the folding maps complete. Faults: 1) cocked front to back 2) marks and wear to binding consistent with age 3) front hinge split after free end paper [not badly] and binding tight 4) marks / foxing to the title page 5) 2 fold out maps have been misfolded in their lifetime and the fore edges are browned and chipped 6) repair in sellotape to the Natal map - which makes the fold stand a little 'proud' 7) first map (frontispiece) stands proud of the pages - a little but visible Condition Report Externally Spine – good condition - creased to the top and base of the spine, slight fading to the publisher's name at the base of the spine Joints – good condition - sound Corners – good condition - gently bumped Boards – good condition - marked with age to the rear board, front board clean and crosp Page edges – good condition - the frontispiece map stands proud See above and photos Internally Hinges - good condition - cracked after the front free end paper Front paste down – good condition Front free end paper – good condition – foxed and inscribed Title – good condition - foxed Pages – good condition with some light foxing throughout, marks to one or two pages, repair to one of the maps and folds to page corners See photos [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
