        Arizona Journal-Miner from July 23, 1900

Prescott, Arizona. Very Good. 1900. Newspaper. A special issue of the early Arizona Territory newspaper the Arizona Journal-Miner, the first "Temporary Daily Edition" issued after the devastating fire that destroyed downtown Prescott on July 14, 1900. The fire started in the new Scopel Hotel and spread quickly due to the unfortunate circumstance of the one downtown water pump being disconnected for repairs. The newspaper is a one-sheet folded into four pages, with a few holes along the fold and penciled writing on the front page about the significance of the issue. Most of the news deals with the comings and goings of residents and the plans of the newspaper, which was temporarily printing on a small job printing plant and seeking a space large enough for its machinery. The last page also has a notice of livestock assessment increases and ads for local businesses. A rare memento of the historic Prescott fire, with only five records of any 1900 Journal-Miner issues on OCLC. ; 12" x 7 3/4"; 4 pp .

[Autograph Letter, Signed, About Joan of Arc]

30 Wellington Ct., Albert Gate, London, 1900. on four panels of a folded octavo sheet of letterhead. A few minor finger smudges, folded for mailing (with careful repair to break at one fold) otherwise very good or better. To Canon [Basil] Wilberforce. In an October 1899 letter to W.D. Howells, Clemens noted that he had just received an invitation from Wilberforce to "talk Joan of Arc in his drawing-room to the Dukes and Earls and M. P.'s ...," and indicated that he would endeavor to postpone the occasion. He appears to have succeeded in doing so, for here, six months later, he discusses the nature of the proposed talk: "The short paper which I wrote for Mr. Murray's book [T. Douglas Murray, JEANNE D'ARC, MAID OF ORLEANS: DELIVERER OF FRANCE (1903)] contains what I should wish to say -- a grouping, under two or three heads, of the chief marvels of Joan's character as revealed by the prominent incidents of her career. It is not an effort to account for Joan, but rather an argument or confession that she cannot be accounted for. A large part of the interest which she has for me, grows out of just that perplexing & fascinating mystery: that our capablest rules of measurement are baffled & defeated in her case -- we can't get at her astronomical dimensions with our yard-stick. If I might read from that paper & intersperse the reading with talk enough to relieve the formality & stiffness of the deliberately- prepared sentences, I think I might get through without ship-wreck ...." Signed: "Very sincerely yours S.L. Clemens." Wilberforce & Clemens are enshrined in the body of literary anecdote via the incident in July of 1899 when Wilberforce confused Clemens' hat for his own and made off with it.

Hackbridge: from the Sign of the Rose, , 1900. Large square octavo. Original drab grey wrappers, lettered in black on front cover (with Gordon Craig's monogram in red & black), printer's monogram on back cover. 50 original bookplates on 49 leaves (21 of which are hand coloured); plus two additional bookplates loosely inserted. Intriguingly inscribed in pencil on front cover "E.T.", in a hand resembling that of Ellen Terry. Light wear to binding, front cover toned at fore-edge, a couple of bookplates lightly creased otherwise an excellent copy of a fragile publication. First edition. Inscribed by the artist on a preliminary blank: "Gordon Craig 1901". Rare: Copac locates only two copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (Liverpool, National Trust), OCLC adds only one copy worldwide (Yale). Gordon Craig's bibliographers, Fletcher & Rood, and John Blatchly (The Bookplates of Edward Gordon Craig) call for 45 plates on 44 leaves, 23 hand coloured. "When in 1900 he lost his mother's regular allowance and needed money even more urgently than usual, [Gordon Craig] prepared two collections of bookplates for sale, one comprising ten plates (and three GC marks for decoration) in card covers, all coloured. For wealthier collectors 45 plates were tipped into a hardbound album of plain grey leaves... Both editions are very rare" (Blatchly).

Penelope's Progress being such extracts from the Commonplace Book of Penelope Hamilton as relate to her Experiences in Scotland [and] Penelope's English Experiences.

Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin & Company,, 1900. Two volumes, octavo. Original olive buckram, title labels to spines. Frontispiece by C. E. Brock to each, and respectively 52 and 54 other Brock illustrations in the text. Tanning to cloth at spines and around board edges, very small chip to top forecorner of first blank and half title in the first work, otherwise excellent copies. First illustrated editions, both copies inscribed and signed by Wiggin on the front free endpapers and Penelope's Progress with the title page additionally signed and dated 1901, and an autograph note singed tipped in. Penelope's Progress is inscribed quoting the first sentence of the book: "We have travelled together before, Salemina, Francesca, and I, and we know the very worst there is to know about one another" and signed "Quotation from myself: Kate Douglas Wiggin"; Penelope's English Experiences is similarly inscribed with the first sentence: "Here we are in London again, Salemia, Francesca and I" and signed "Kate Douglas Wiggin." The autograph note signed, using Wiggin's married name Riggs, reads: "Dear Mr Williamson - Here are the books and the signatures must have consoled you in your disappointment at buying old ones by mistake! I hope you have discovered that Chapters 8, 11, 12, 13 of the English experiences are all new. sincerely yours, Kate Douglas Riggs." These two titles are the first two instalments of the "Penelope's Experiences" series of British Isles adventures by American children's author Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923), all appearing prior to her writing her famous Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1903). The series also included Penelope's Irish Experiences and Penelope's Postscripts. The present editions represent the first illustrated editions, bearing the charming line-drawn illustrations of C. E. Brock - evidently the text of the English Experiences was also expanded for these Brock editions. Penelope's Progress was first published Houghton Mifflin 1898, and Penelope's English Experiences was first published as part of A Cathedral Courtship and Penelope's English Experiences, Houghton Mifflin 1893.

Les chasses au Caucase. ????? ???????.

Vilborg for A. Yakovlev Skt. Peterburg 1900 - Large folio (41.8 x 31 cm). Title, 53 pp. in Russian and French, 192 photographic plates on 100 leaves, each captioned below in both Russian and French; first plate slightly soiled in outer margin. Publisher's green cloth, gilt lettering within decorative boarder to upper board, presentation inscription to upper fly leaf "???????? ????? ????????? ????????(?) ?? ?????? ?????? ?? ???????? ????????? (?). 1919 ??? 26 ?????"; old repairs to hinges. The first and only edition of this finely-produced record of Imperial hunting parties in the Caucasus - one of the greatest Russian hunting books, in French and Russian, conceived and produced specifically to promote the Caucasus region at The Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900. Kalinovsky (an officer in the 16th Caucasus Grenadier Regiment) apologises in his preface for any shortcomings in the work, as ayant été conçu un peu tard, ce travail ne peut être considéré que comme effectué très vite. The author describes the Caucasus as a vast Eldorado naturel, before listing the various animals that can be hunted there, and paying tribute to the rugged and fearless local hunters. Follows a wide-ranging photographic record of the numerous hunts, with members of the Imperial family participating in many of them, and the plates generally depict the hunters at the end of the chase, with their trophies before them and in various climatic conditions. The first plate shows a hunting party that includes Tsar Alexander III (1845-94) and his son the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), and the following plates depict other members of the Imperial family, including Tsar Alexander III's cousins Grand Dukes Nikolay Mikhailovich, Georgiy Mikhailovich, Sergey Mikhailovich and Petr Nikolaevich, and Alexander III's uncle Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich. Among the animals collected are several species of deer, wild boar, game birds, bears, and mountain goats. N. Markov was responsible for the French translation. The work is uncommon in Western libraries: copies can only be located in the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, Columbia University Libraries, and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.         Copies of Letters from Lieut. the Honble. Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe A.D.C. to Field Marshal Lord Raglan written during the Crimean War to different members of his family, &c.

c.1900 - 2 volumes, quarto. Early 20th-century red cloth, gilt lettered spines, red speckled edges. 418-page carbon-copy typescript, rectos only. Spines sunned, a few light abrasions to covers, inner hinges split but sound, but overall in very good condition. 3 hand-drawn maps (2 coloured). A fascinating family archive of 144 frank and detailed letters in typescript, from the originals, that Calthorpe wrote to his family and friends, spanning the years from 8 April 1854 to 24 July 1855. Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe (1831-1912), 7th Baron Calthorpe, was aide-de-camp to Lord Raglan, commander of the British expeditionary force in the Crimea. The letters differ considerably from the versions polished for publication and issued anonymously as Letters from Head-Quarters; or, the Realities of the. War in the Crimea (1856 and three editions by 1858). Of particular interest is a lengthy account (letter 57) of the Charge of the Light Brigade, accompanied by a hand-drawn, coloured map of dispositions at Balaclava. In this letter, Calthorpe puts the blame for that fateful charge squarely on Captain Louis Nolan, who was killed in the attack: "Captain Nolan went, but very much exceeded his orders: telling Lord Lucan that he was to charge the Lt: Cavalry at all hazards and retake the guns. Lord Lucan said it was madness to attempt it, and that it was taking the Light Cavalry to certain destruction. However, the order was of course obeyed." Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed from Charles Somerville Orde (1859-1937, banker and captain in the 2nd (Norfolk and Suffolk) Great Yarmouth Volunteer Corps), addressed to "My dear Calthorpe" (dated 25 September 1901), presumably Somerset Frederick Gough-Calthorpe (1862-1940), 8th Baron Calthorpe (whose large armorial bookplate is present in both volumes), son of Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe; it was this member of the Gough-Calthorpe family who was responsible for producing the two volumes ("It was a labour to undertake to type so much - so well done - I congratulate you").

The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice.

London: Vale Press, 1900. Woodcut decorations by Charles Ricketts. One of the Vale Press Shakespeare volumes. 235 x 153 x 19mm. Bound in 2012 by Nicky Oliver in full natural calf skin with red and black foil tooling. Titled leather hea7514dband. Top edge foil tooled. Hand dyed paper doublures. In the original maroon velvet lined, black cloth clamshell box with morocco and gilt spine label. Shakespeare's tragedy is riddled with sinister gossip and betrayal which ends in a blaze of fury. I decided upon this stripped back design to emphasise Othello's ire. The bare calfskin is an ideal background for the scratchy and agitated line work for Othello's furious portrait." - Nicky Oliver

Album, Collection of Coney Island Postcards

      c. 1900-1910. Hardcover. Very Good+. Red cloth, "Post-Cards" stamped in gilt on upper board; 7.75 x 9.75 inches; contains 24 grey leaves, each with 4 postcards (2 on recto, 2 on verso) mounted to the page via corner slits (and, as such, easily removable); 96 postcards in all. Binding broken, with many leaves loose; and brittle, with the occasional broken corner slit. Postcards, however, are in excellent condition, bright and clean -- just a few with maringal handwritten notes, most handwritten on the verso, with the original stamp and postmark. A wonderful turn-of-the-century collection or postcards, featuring images in b/w and full-color, illustrated or photographic, offering numerous views of Coney Island during the day or at night, empty or peopled, aerial or up-close, interiors, exteriors, its architecture, and landmarks. Just a few images repeat -- the swing at Luna Park, for example, is shown once in b/w, and again in color. Sights include Surf Avenue, The Bowery, the Entrance and The Tower at Dreamland, Steeplechase Pier, the Chutes, Culver Depot, Feltmans, the Flip-Flap, and more. Many of the landmarks captured here are no longer with us today, due to fire (Luna Park appears throughout the album, before it was heavily damaged by fire in 1944) and the "development" of Coney Island by Fred Trump (who invited investors to throw stones through the stained glass windows of the dance pavillion before he demolished it -- an interior of the pavillion is included) and a string of NYC officials.

      - BAUM,L.FRANK. A NEW WONDERLAND. NY: R.H. Russell 1900. 4to, cl. backed pictorial boards, x, 190p., frontis present as a high quality color facsimile (frontis is frequently lacking in this title), water stain on lower quadrant of book running through the book - which varies is visibility. Affected areas of pages sl. wavy, else a tight presentable copy. 1st ed., in the first state binding with pictorial endpapers. This is actually the FIRST CHILDREN'S BOOK WRITTEN BY BAUM (although Mother Goose In Prose reached publication before A New Wonderland, this was written earlier and delayed in publication). This is a marvelous fantasy taking place in Phunnyland inhabited by Princes Zingle and Fiddlecumdoo, Timtom and the Princesses Truella and Pattycake. Illustrated by FRANK VER BECK with pictorial endpapers, 16 2-color plates including title, plus numerous black and whites. This title, which was an obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of Alice In Wonderland, was drastically reworked and later published as The Surprising Adventures of the Magical Monarch of Mo. A notoriously rare Baum fantasy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Famille des Composées, 10ime Cahier

France, c. 1900. Paperback. Very Good+. An aesthcially pleasing volume, near bursting with specimens from the daisy family. Stitched blue wraps, handwritten label affixed to front cover (white with a decorative blue border, these labels are used throughout); 235 x 315 mm; contains more than 100 specimens from the daisy family, affixed to recto and verso with paper tape (sometimes, remnants of the aforementioned labels). A taxonomic endeavor, the botanical name and genus of each specimen is identified by hand, in black ink, in (again!) blue-bordered label, and sometimes accompanied by pencil notations and/or printed text from an unknown source. (Text is concerned with the science of daisies and is not at all, well, flowery. No poems about posies, you see.) Small waterstain at fore-edge of front cover; some specimens missing their flower, but condition is excellent overall.

London: Longmans, Green & Co.,, 1900. A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania. Octavo, original green cloth, title gilt to the spine and to the front board with "signature" block, black surface-paper endpapers. Somewhat rubbed, and bumped at the extremities, versos of free endpapers browned, pale toning to the text and a scattter of light foxing, but remains a very good copy. Bookseller's ticket of Alfred A. Seale of Southsea to the front pastedown. First UK edition, second state with the title page a cancel without copyright details verso. Signed on the half-title; "Winston S. Churchill, 1916", and distinctly unusual thus. Churchill's only novel, and his "first book, in the sense that it was well started before the Malakand Campaign got under way" (Woods, Artillery of Words, p.56). Summoned north by Sir Bindon Blood, Churchill declared the novel "indefinitely shelved". A melodramatic tale of a liberal revolution in an autocratic Mediterranean state, "the novel is at once a political testament and a writing-out of a stage of personal development" (p.60). While not exactly repudiating the novel, Churchill did his best to forget it, saying in My Early Life that he had "consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it", consequently signed or inscribed copies are rarely encountered. This copy with a manuscript label to the front free endpaper reading; "To be sold by Auction, Councillor Sydney Gimson offers 10/-". Gimson was the owner of an engineering works and a secularist councillor in Leicester, who involved himself in fund-raising for hospitals during the First World War, and it is possible that Churchill's signature was obtained, and the auction organised, as part of such activities (Newitt, The Who's Who of Radical Leicester).
