A New Wonderland. Illustrated by Frank Ver Beck.

      - New York: Russell, 1900. 4to, x, 190 pp. Color frontispiece and 15 two-color plates within the pagination. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, a really good copy of a book rarely found in even adequate condition. In a new box. First edition, in the first state binding with pictorial endpapers. This is Baum's first book (although Mother Goose In Prose was published first). This title was an obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of "Alice In Wonderland"; it was late reworked and published as "The Surprising Adventures of the Magical Monarch of Mo". Aleph-Bet notes: "A notoriously rare Baum fantasy, that when found is usually lacking the frontis." Not in Cotsen, Oppenheimer, Osborne, or Gumuchian. Peter Hanff noted: "The volume has sixteen color inserts, including the title page, as follows: facing the title page, the title page, and facing pages 4, 12, 28, 38, 48, 60, 72, 92, 104, 120, 132, 152, 168, and 186. The plates, though unnumbered, are included in the pagination. Justin Schiller once had a file copy from the publisher that was annotated to indicate that the firm had run short of frontispieces."         THE NEW NOTE IN FURNISHING BY WARINGS. (Advance Sheets)

(London): 1900. (London):, n.d., ca. 1900. (London): n.d., ca. 1900. "Warings of Liverpool were founded by John Waring, who arrived in the city from Belfast in 1835 and established a wholesale cabinet making business. He was succeeded by his son Samuel James Waring who rapidly expanded the business during the 1880's, furnishing hotels and public buildings throughout Europe. He also founded Waring-White Building Company which built the Liverpool Corn Exchange, Selfridge's department store and the Ritz Hotel." (see: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk Ref. 2233). Around the time of this catalogue's publication, Waring had started partnering in business with the distinguished (and then ailing) furnishings firm, Gillows of Lancaster. In this particular catalogue a full page is devoted to a list of some Waring & Gillow contracts and another page lists the awards received by the "Amalgamated Houses of Waring & Gillow, Ltd"; Waring & Gillow was officially established in 1903. With showrooms in London, Liverpool, Manchester and Paris, the growing companies were expanding their reach. Underscoring that reach is the presentation of this almost encyclopaedic catalogue as only an advance on a complete catalogue made for the benefit of "customers residing at a distance". Hence the French chateau bookplate we find in the book. These "advance sheets" contain several examples of fully completed drawing rooms; clocks in various styles including Chippendale; and all variety of upholstered furniture. From the halls to libraries and bedrooms, there are illustrations of furniture appropriate for the sophisticated home. The bookplate of the bibliothèque du château de Valençay is on the front pastedown, along with two labels from the Warings firm, one identifying the catalogue as No. 520 (or 530?), the other advising of an increase in prices. OCLC locates four copies, of which only one in North America. No copies in COPAC. Oblong 40 ( 26 x 36 cm); 240 + 20 pp. with numerous reproductions from black and white photographs and drawings + 8 pages of color photographs of carpets. Original quarter art vellum with cloth covered boards lettered in gilt, moderate scuffing and discoloration to covers; "Waring" inscribed in ink on plain art vellum spine; bookplate and two printed labels on front pastedown. In very good condition.

TEXTILE COMPOSITION ALBUM.

(Paris) 1900. (Paris), ca. 1900. (Paris) ca. 1900. A colorful manuscript pattern album with original textile designs. It is bound with the commercial device of the Parisian firm, Ernest Dieutegard embossed on the front cover. The compositions and studies for designs are varied and carefully executed, ranging from arrangements for the edges of tablecloths or shawls to overall floral or geometric patterns to smaller details of those patterns. A few sheets contain small close-ups of intricate designs based on a keen observation of nature. An invoice dated 1900 is also laid in. It is printed on the stationery of Ernest Dieutegard 5, rue Saint-Augustin (Prés La Bourse) with "Vve. Est. Dieutegard & Doizey, Succrs" stamped in red below the original heading. Dieuteregard's insignia or commerical device appears on the left of the invoice above the indication that he was a member of the jury at the Exposition Universelle, 1889. Dieutegard is also listed in the Journal officiel de la Republic française. Lois et decréts, p. 2508 as entered in classe 34 of the 1889 exhibition as a fabricant de passementeries. He received the medaille d'or at the Paris Exposition of 1878. Bound album (27 x 21 cm); 62 leaves of original designs, most in color gouache or body color, some in sepia-toned and colored ink; just a few designs in pencil with partial color; some text pages are slightly smaller in size. With printed invoice laid in. Bound in contemporary quarter leather, raised bands; pebbled cloth-covered boards with commercial device stamped in gold on upper cover, slight shelfwear; marbled endpapers; preliminary and rear blanks covered with pencil scribblings; occasional offsetting from color on blank versos; infrequent smudging of color; darkening and spotting of some margins, but, still, in very good condition.

        Arizona Journal-Miner from July 23, 1900

Prescott, Arizona. Very Good. 1900. Newspaper. A special issue of the early Arizona Territory newspaper the Arizona Journal-Miner, the first "Temporary Daily Edition" issued after the devastating fire that destroyed downtown Prescott on July 14, 1900. The fire started in the new Scopel Hotel and spread quickly due to the unfortunate circumstance of the one downtown water pump being disconnected for repairs. The newspaper is a one-sheet folded into four pages, with a few holes along the fold and penciled writing on the front page about the significance of the issue. Most of the news deals with the comings and goings of residents and the plans of the newspaper, which was temporarily printing on a small job printing plant and seeking a space large enough for its machinery. The last page also has a notice of livestock assessment increases and ads for local businesses. A rare memento of the historic Prescott fire, with only five records of any 1900 Journal-Miner issues on OCLC. ; 12" x 7 3/4"; 4 pp .

[Autograph Letter, Signed, About Joan of Arc]

30 Wellington Ct., Albert Gate, London, 1900. on four panels of a folded octavo sheet of letterhead. A few minor finger smudges, folded for mailing (with careful repair to break at one fold) otherwise very good or better. To Canon [Basil] Wilberforce. In an October 1899 letter to W.D. Howells, Clemens noted that he had just received an invitation from Wilberforce to "talk Joan of Arc in his drawing-room to the Dukes and Earls and M. P.'s ...," and indicated that he would endeavor to postpone the occasion. He appears to have succeeded in doing so, for here, six months later, he discusses the nature of the proposed talk: "The short paper which I wrote for Mr. Murray's book [T. Douglas Murray, JEANNE D'ARC, MAID OF ORLEANS: DELIVERER OF FRANCE (1903)] contains what I should wish to say -- a grouping, under two or three heads, of the chief marvels of Joan's character as revealed by the prominent incidents of her career. It is not an effort to account for Joan, but rather an argument or confession that she cannot be accounted for. A large part of the interest which she has for me, grows out of just that perplexing & fascinating mystery: that our capablest rules of measurement are baffled & defeated in her case -- we can't get at her astronomical dimensions with our yard-stick. If I might read from that paper & intersperse the reading with talk enough to relieve the formality & stiffness of the deliberately- prepared sentences, I think I might get through without ship-wreck ...." Signed: "Very sincerely yours S.L. Clemens." Wilberforce & Clemens are enshrined in the body of literary anecdote via the incident in July of 1899 when Wilberforce confused Clemens' hat for his own and made off with it.

        Bookplates.

Hackbridge: from the Sign of the Rose, , 1900. Large square octavo. Original drab grey wrappers, lettered in black on front cover (with Gordon Craig's monogram in red & black), printer's monogram on back cover. 50 original bookplates on 49 leaves (21 of which are hand coloured); plus two additional bookplates loosely inserted. Intriguingly inscribed in pencil on front cover "E.T.", in a hand resembling that of Ellen Terry. Light wear to binding, front cover toned at fore-edge, a couple of bookplates lightly creased otherwise an excellent copy of a fragile publication. First edition. Inscribed by the artist on a preliminary blank: "Gordon Craig 1901". Rare: Copac locates only two copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (Liverpool, National Trust), OCLC adds only one copy worldwide (Yale). Gordon Craig's bibliographers, Fletcher & Rood, and John Blatchly (The Bookplates of Edward Gordon Craig) call for 45 plates on 44 leaves, 23 hand coloured. "When in 1900 he lost his mother's regular allowance and needed money even more urgently than usual, [Gordon Craig] prepared two collections of bookplates for sale, one comprising ten plates (and three GC marks for decoration) in card covers, all coloured. For wealthier collectors 45 plates were tipped into a hardbound album of plain grey leaves... Both editions are very rare" (Blatchly).

Penelope's Progress being such extracts from the Commonplace Book of Penelope Hamilton as relate to her Experiences in Scotland [and] Penelope's English Experiences.

Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin & Company,, 1900. Two volumes, octavo. Original olive buckram, title labels to spines. Frontispiece by C. E. Brock to each, and respectively 52 and 54 other Brock illustrations in the text. Tanning to cloth at spines and around board edges, very small chip to top forecorner of first blank and half title in the first work, otherwise excellent copies. First illustrated editions, both copies inscribed and signed by Wiggin on the front free endpapers and Penelope's Progress with the title page additionally signed and dated 1901, and an autograph note singed tipped in. Penelope's Progress is inscribed quoting the first sentence of the book: "We have travelled together before, Salemina, Francesca, and I, and we know the very worst there is to know about one another" and signed "Quotation from myself: Kate Douglas Wiggin"; Penelope's English Experiences is similarly inscribed with the first sentence: "Here we are in London again, Salemia, Francesca and I" and signed "Kate Douglas Wiggin." The autograph note signed, using Wiggin's married name Riggs, reads: "Dear Mr Williamson - Here are the books and the signatures must have consoled you in your disappointment at buying old ones by mistake! I hope you have discovered that Chapters 8, 11, 12, 13 of the English experiences are all new. sincerely yours, Kate Douglas Riggs." These two titles are the first two instalments of the "Penelope's Experiences" series of British Isles adventures by American children's author Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923), all appearing prior to her writing her famous Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1903). The series also included Penelope's Irish Experiences and Penelope's Postscripts. The present editions represent the first illustrated editions, bearing the charming line-drawn illustrations of C. E. Brock - evidently the text of the English Experiences was also expanded for these Brock editions. Penelope's Progress was first published Houghton Mifflin 1898, and Penelope's English Experiences was first published as part of A Cathedral Courtship and Penelope's English Experiences, Houghton Mifflin 1893.

Les chasses au Caucase. ????? ???????.

Vilborg for A. Yakovlev Skt. Peterburg 1900 - Large folio (41.8 x 31 cm). Title, 53 pp. in Russian and French, 192 photographic plates on 100 leaves, each captioned below in both Russian and French; first plate slightly soiled in outer margin. Publisher's green cloth, gilt lettering within decorative boarder to upper board, presentation inscription to upper fly leaf "???????? ????? ????????? ????????(?) ?? ?????? ?????? ?? ???????? ????????? (?). 1919 ??? 26 ?????"; old repairs to hinges. The first and only edition of this finely-produced record of Imperial hunting parties in the Caucasus - one of the greatest Russian hunting books, in French and Russian, conceived and produced specifically to promote the Caucasus region at The Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900. Kalinovsky (an officer in the 16th Caucasus Grenadier Regiment) apologises in his preface for any shortcomings in the work, as ayant été conçu un peu tard, ce travail ne peut être considéré que comme effectué très vite. The author describes the Caucasus as a vast Eldorado naturel, before listing the various animals that can be hunted there, and paying tribute to the rugged and fearless local hunters. Follows a wide-ranging photographic record of the numerous hunts, with members of the Imperial family participating in many of them, and the plates generally depict the hunters at the end of the chase, with their trophies before them and in various climatic conditions. The first plate shows a hunting party that includes Tsar Alexander III (1845-94) and his son the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), and the following plates depict other members of the Imperial family, including Tsar Alexander III's cousins Grand Dukes Nikolay Mikhailovich, Georgiy Mikhailovich, Sergey Mikhailovich and Petr Nikolaevich, and Alexander III's uncle Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich. Among the animals collected are several species of deer, wild boar, game birds, bears, and mountain goats. N. Markov was responsible for the French translation. The work is uncommon in Western libraries: copies can only be located in the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, Columbia University Libraries, and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
