        Autograph letter signed. Berlin-Friedenau, 4. V. 1900.

1900. Large 8vo. 1 p. To Maximilian Harden, sending some corrections of an article by Ernst Horneffer about the Weimar Nietzsche Archive. - The Nietzsche Archive had seen its first serious crisis in the winter of 1896/97 when Elisabeth Foerster-Nietzsche wanted to win Rudolf Steiner as publisher and dismiss Fritz Koegel. The subsequent negotiations with Steiner failed, however, as he expressed sharp criticism of Foerster-Nietzsche, which culminated in the assertion that Mrs. Foerster-Nietzsche was completely unqualified to judge "in all matters concerning the teachings of her brother". - Slight damage to edges, partly repaired; very rare.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Th. Herzl"). [Wien], 9. IV. 1900.

1900. 1 S. 8vo. All the gifts and possibilities of the adult woman are already evident in [Gretel]. And it is her peculiar charm that she never knows nor suspects the existence of what is already awake in her. In her glance you read all the measure of intelligence that one needs for life, for, fortunately for her, she does not know what life is ... She lacks only knowledge, experience, destiny; otherwise she is a complete human being" (zit. n. A. Chouraqui, A Man Alone: The Life of Theodor Herzl, S. 168).

"Iskra" ("Spark"). 42 issues, with 15 supplements. Leipzig, Munich, Stuttgart, London, and Geneva, 1900-1905.

1900. Folio. 2 vols. The political newspaper of Russian socialist emigrants, founded by Lenin as the official organ of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, was the first general Russian Marxist newspaper. Printed on lightweight Bible paper, it could, with great difficulty, be smuggled into Russia. The first issue was published in Leipzig on December 24, 1900, the second in Munich, later issues in Stuttgart. To evade the Tsarist secret police, the printing of the newspaper was moved London in April 1902. In 1903, after the split of the RSDLP, Lenin left the staff, and the paper was seized by Mensheviks and published (now in Geneva) under the control of Plekhanov until 1905. "The years of its publication are referred to as the 'Iskra years' of the revolutionary movement" (cf. Kluge). The editors were Lenin, Plekhanov, Martov, P. B. Axelrod, Vera Zasulich, and A. N. Potressov. Lenin penned more than 50 articles for "Iskra", developed its political slant, planned the issues and found the authors. While the average circulation was 8,000, it is today very difficult to find copies - unsurprising in view of the illegal production and distribution. The present collection comprises nos. 1 (1900/1901, including "Ot Redaktsii"), 4, 6, 8-10, 15, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 64, 37, 39, 40, 46, 49-58, 62, 64, 77-80, 82-87, 89, 93, 94, and 112 as well as the supplements to nos. 43, 44, 52, 53, 56, 62-64, 67-70, 77, 101, and 112. - Slight paper defects restored.         London to Ladysmith via Pretoria

Longmans, Green, and Co., New York 1900 - This is an unusually clean copy of the U.S. first edition of Churchill's fourth published book. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". The American edition offered here is more scarce than the British, with a single printing of which no more than an estimated 1,850 copies were sold. This edition is bound in pebble grain red cloth that proved quite susceptible to blotchy wear and soiling, particularly on the spine. This is an unusually clean and bright copy which we grade conservatively as very good plus. The binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and only light wear to extremities. This copy has been substantially spared the blotchy wear and spine darkening that most copies suffer, and retains bright spine gilt with only light, uniform spine sunning. The contents are notably bright with no previous ownership marks. All maps and plans are intact, including the folding maps, which remain properly folded. The top edge gilt is bright. Trivial spotting is confined to the fore and bottom edges. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.2, Woods/ICS A4(b), Langworth p.55. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Klondike Stampede - Profusely Illustrated

New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1900. 470 Pages. Not a library book. Red cloth boards with gold lettering to front and spine. Spine is faded and sun-darkened. No other defects noted. Interior text and illustration pages, including the fold-outs are flawless. This classic in Yukon gold rush literature was originally published in 1900 and has long been out of print. Tappan Adney, a New York journalist, was dispatched to the Yukon in 1897, at the height of the gold fever, to furnish news and pictures of the new gold fields, Adney joined the northward migration, chronicling the day-to-day experiences of the stampeders. He moved comfortably among the would-be miners, recounting their stories, the sights along the route, and the hopes and fears of the many men - and handful of women - who shared his journey to the gold fields. The book contains excellent descriptions of the people, places, events, and experiences of the Klondike stampede. The account of the Klondike gold fields, which includes pragmatic discussions of such things as mining techniques, cabin-building, and the operation of dog teams, is solid, reliable, and fascinating. Adney was not only a good writer, he was also an accomplished photographer, and there are over 150 photographs and drawings in the text, four of which are large fold-outs, adding an important visual dimension to the book. After it came out, The Klondike Stampede rarely received the attention it deserved, although northern specialists have long found much of value in its pages. Contents In 23 Chapters: Arrival of Excelsior and Portland with Treasure and News of Great Strike, Outfitting in Victoria, Landing at Skagway, Pack-horses go to Dyea, Departure for Dyea, Sheep Camp, Departure from Bennett, Former Hudson's Bay Post, Klondike City Dawson First Impressions, Choosing a Cabin Site, Dogs and Dog-driving, Kinds of Gold Mining Varieties, Story of the Klondike Discovery, The Staking of Bonanza, Midwinter Short of Grub, Spring in the Yukon, Flood at Dawson, Hundreds of Miles of Claims, Midsummer in Dawson, Government in the Klondike Mining Laws, Vegetation and Agricultural Possibilities, and Last Steamer for St Michael. Plus Five Appendices: A Typical One-Year Outfit for One Man Supplied by The Alaska Commercial Company at Dawson in June 1897, Table of Distances, Table of Temperatures Observed by Mr. William Oglivie at 40 Mile From December 1895 to November 1896, United States Military in Alaska, and The Boundary Dispute. .         Faux Books][Folk Art Mechanical Toy Book] Holy Bible

      - Highly unusual fun piece of folk art, with the "Bible" springing up with the touch of a lever. Most definitely one-of-a-kind! N.d., circa 1900, possibly earlier. In size, like a 4to. 33 by 25 cm, 14 cm thick. The bible resembles an early 19th century leather bible. Here, though, the boards and sides are of wood, with the spine a heavy cloth which is painted to look like leather, and with the paint looks not unlike a paper mache composition. The snap is on the fore-edge, with the metal lever on the top. All sides are painted in gilt. Moderate wear throughout, as befitting an old heirloom bible. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Contending Forces: A Romance Illustrative of Negro Life North and South

Boston: The Colored Co-Operative Pub. 1900. First. First edition. Illustration and cover designed by R. Emmett Owen. Red cloth decorated in pink and yellow. Front hinge professionally and invisibly strengthened else a lovely, just about fine copy of this important novel, the eighth published novel by an African-American woman, the first of the 20th Century, and one of the most important, notable for its realistic portrayal of lynching and prejudice in the unreconstructed South. Additionally, this was only the third novel published by a black-owned publishing company. Hopkins was the literary editor of Colored American Magazine, a short-lived but important periodical. Most copies we have seen have been bound in green, this is the first copy that we've seen bound in red cloth. A lovely copy of a very scarce and desirable novel. .

COMPLETE POETICAL WORKS...With an Introduction by John Morley.

London: Macmillan, 1900. A handsome printing beautifully bound. With an engraved portrait frontispiece by G.J. Stodart. 8vo, in a fine binding of full brown crushed morocco, beautifully marbled end-leaves, the spine with raised bands, lettered in gilt in one compartment, gilt fillet ruled turnovers, all edges gilt. xlix, 928 pp. A very handsome and beautifully preserved copy in fine condition. A BEAUTIFUL COPY IN A VERY FINE AND HANDSOME BINDING. Wordsworth holds an illustrious spot in the canon of Romantic poets, joined by men such as Keats and Coleridge, and his poems in this volume speak his genius for themselves. This edition of the Works comprises all the Poet’s best and finest poems and is complete including “The Prelude” his last work, which was published after his death. Wordsworth had a passionate love for all things of nature: “Knolls, rocks, and lakes, were his personal acquaintances, as it were, or rather his personal friends; and not a few trees, in different parts of the country, owe to his intercession their continued existence”. The beautiful Ramage binding is a fitting encasement for his lovely, honest verse.

The River War, the only jacketed volumes known to exist, signed and dated by Churchill on 25 August 1900 while campaigning for his first seat in Parliament

London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1900. First edition, third printing. Hardcover. This remarkable first edition, final printing set of Churchill's second book, The River War, is the sole jacketed set known to survive. It is also signed and dated by a then 25-year-old Churchill on 25 August 1900, while he was campaigning for his first seat in Parliament. This is the earliest known work by Churchill for which first edition dust jackets survive and among the rarest prizes in the Churchill canon. Provenance is the collection of Churchill?s bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen, who has owned the set for nearly three decades. The dust jackets are thin, manila stock printed in black, exactly duplicating the binding print and illustrations. The jacket flaps and rear faces are blank. All first edition bindings are identical and only seven months separate the first and third printings, so it is probable to the point of near certainty that the dust jackets for all three printings were identical. The author's signature in black ink in two lines on the Volume I front free endpaper verso (facing the half-title recto) reads ?Winston S. Churchill | 25. August. 1900.? On 12 August 1900, Churchill wrote to his mother, Lady Randolph Churchill: ?I must concentrate all of my efforts upon Oldham? and this is where he was campaigning the day this set of The River War was signed. He won his first seat in Parliament 37 days later, on 1 October 1900. This first edition, third printing is not only by far the scarcest issue of the first edition, but also the last unabridged issue to this day. All three first edition printings (2,646 sets total) are virtually identical, issued respectively in November 1899, February 1900, and June 1900. Only 140 copies of this third and final printing were ever made available. In 1902 Churchill (by then more mindful of political exigencies) revised and abridged his text, excising much criticism of Kitchener. All of the many subsequent editions are based on the 1902 abridged text. Being both jacketed and inscribed, this set defies the mundanities of a condition report. Nonetheless, we grade this set as near fine plus in good dust jackets. Both jackets are substantially complete, with all illustrations and printed text intact, but nonetheless with perimeter losses, overall wrinkling and wear, and minor soiling. The Volume I jacket shows loss at front hinge extremities to a maximum depth of .75 inch, lesser chipping to the edges, vertical creasing with tiny losses at the front hinge, a 1.5 inch closed tear at the lower rear hinge, and creasing and closed tears at the flap folds. The Volume II jacket shows loss at spine ends to a maximum depth of one inch, lesser chipping to the edges, closed tears extending into ?THE? on the upper front face title lettering, some rear hinge splitting and fractional loss, and flap fold short tears and minor loss. Both jackets show mild spine toning and light soiling. The dust jackets are protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The blue cloth bindings are exceptionally bright and clean, with unfaded color and vividly bright gilt. Volume I shows a little wrinkling to the spine ends, trivial shelf wear to the lower edges, and bumps to the lower corners. The binding remains fully attached, but a little tender at the front hinge. The Volume II binding likewise shows a little wrinkling to the spine ends, just a hint of mottling of the blue color at the bottom edges, and minor corner bumps. The contents of both volumes remain unusually bright, with modest spotting substantially confined to prelims and otherwise bright page edges. The original black endpapers are intact, as are all illustrations, maps and plans. All folding maps are pristine and properly folded, with no tears or losses. All photogravure portraits, including the frontispieces, are intact, as are their original tissue guards. We find no previous ownership marks other than the author?s signature.       Octavo, original green cloth, title gilt to the spine and to the front board with "signature" block, black surface-paper endpapers.First UK edition, second state with the title page a cancel without copyright details verso. Signed on the half-title; "Winston S. Churchill, 1916", and distinctly unusual thus. Churchill's only novel, and his "first book, in the sense that it was well started before the Malakand Campaign got under way" (Woods, Artillery of Words, p.56). Summoned north by Sir Bindon Blood, Churchill declared the novel "indefinitely shelved". A melodramatic tale of a liberal revolution in an autocratic Mediterranean state, "the novel is at once a political testament and a writing-out of a stage of personal development" (p.60). While not exactly repudiating the novel, Churchill did his best to forget it, saying in My Early Life that he had "consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it", consequently signed or inscribed copies are rarely encountered. This copy with a manuscript label to the front free endpaper reading; "To be sold by Auction, Councillor Sydney Gimson offers 10/-". Gimson was the owner of an engineering works and a secularist councillor in Leicester, who involved himself in fund-raising for hospitals during the First World War, and it is possible that Churchill's signature was obtained, and the auction organised, as part of such activities (Newitt, The Who's Who of Radical Leicester).
