Hand-colored Ladies' Costumes with Transferable Head

(England 1900 - A set of nine hand-drawn and aquatinted costumes, each matted separately, with a delicately featured lady's head that transfers between the costumes by fitting into a slot at the neck. The costumes include a riding habit flowing down the side of a horse, outdoor wear, and dresses in which the wearer is holding a fan, a book, or pages of music. Five of the matted costumes have been hinged together. One sheet has a repair patch and two closed tears not affecting the image, another has one small closed tear not affecting the image, and a few sheets show light soiling. Altogether a lovely set showing a variety of English ladies' costumes and activities. (Seven of the cards measure 9 by 11 inches [23x28cm]; the other two are 10 3/8 by 11 inches [26x28cm]).

Les Merveilles et les Originalités Architecturales à l'Exposition 1900

4 pp. of text comprising a complete table of contents, followed by 100 numbered full-page cyanotypes attributed to Albert Lévy, depicting views from the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900, including the Porte Monumental, the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, the Pont Alexandre III, the Esplanade des Invalides, the pavilions of Italy, Turkey, Hungary, Finland, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Spain, the United States, and others, and various other structures from the Champ de Mars and Trocadéro, with the name and architect of each site listed in the table of contents. Some minor age-darkening and soiling to table of contents, images bright and clean. 4to. Boards portfolio, tie-bound, loss to some ribbon ties, some minor soiling, fading, and rubbing to boards. N.p. (Paris - Albert Levy?) n.d. (circa 1900). The cyanotype process was developed in 1842 by the scientist and astronomer John Frederick Herschel, and is a photographic printing process often used to create blueprints and copies of notes, or even prints of objects from nature. The cyanotypes in this volume are attributed to Albert Lévy, a prolific French photographer and editor as well as a pioneer in the field of architectural photography. He focused his work in Europe and the United States, and was one of the first photographers to have studios on both sides of the Atlantic. These striking images convey the beautiful and classical exuberance of the Belle Epoque, as it was so famously expressed at the 1900 Exposition. As of August 2016, WorldCat locates five institutional holdings in North America.

Rare illustrated A.L.S., 1900, with Magic Content

      - A rare and important autograph letter signed by Harry Houdini, "Houdini," one page, both sides, August 2nd, 1900. He writes to fellow magician Servais Le Roy, in part: 'Opened here last night & made good. You ought to see the Handcuffs and irons used in Germany. Here cuffs are used and every station has different cuffs, in fact there are no two alike. I am going to bring some styles back with me and I'll give you a fine pair. Here is the way they look [sketch of the handcuffs]. Has two spring lock & looks like the lilly iron, the leg irons look like this [sketch]. Did you know I patented the Hand cuff act in Europe. The drawings won’t be published in 9 months. Robinson patented his catching gold fish in the air, and he stopped Hiam from making the trick and Maskeleyne from doing it. The opposition house hired a man from Berlin to expose Hand cuffs and he was closed after his first show. It seems strange people like to see the act exposed. But it does not pay to expose anything.' In generally fine condition, with chipping along the right edge affecting one word of text. Houdini writes during the first year of his tour through Europe, where he would remain for four years. As alluded to in this letter, he challenged the local police departments of each city he visited to restrain him; Houdini, of course, inevitably escaped and he became famous throughout Europe as the ‘King of Handcuff.’ In addition to discussing his own act here, Houdini touches upon the flourishing illusionist trade, mentioning William Robinson, who performed under the name Chung Ling Soo, and John Nevil Maskelyne, known for his levitation illusion. An early and truly remarkable Houdini letter boasting ideal magical content. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Remarks upon the Law of Complete Radiation," in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. XLIX, January-June 1900, pp. 539-541

FIRST EDITION, COMPLETE VOLUME, OF RAYLEIGH'S FORMULA TO DESCRIBE THE INTENSITY DISTRIBUTION OF BLACKBODY RADIATION. "The claim that black-body radiation should conform to the distribution law that has since been variously attributed to Rayleigh and Jeans was not made until 1905. But the main conceptual foundations for that claim can be found in a two-page note published by Rayleigh in the June 1900 issue of the Phil Mag [this paper]" (Kuhn, Black-Body Theory and The Quantum Discontinuity, 1894-1912, 144). Here Rayleigh argued "that, at least for long wavelengths, the spectral energy density should rise linearly with temperature for fixed wavelengths" (Brandt, The Harvest of the Century, 31). Toward the close of the 19th century, physicists began to try to understand the behavior of blackbody radiation. "Thermodynamicists had determined that all bodies give off radiation according to their temperature (and emissivity) and if a body strongly absorbed incident radiation of a certain wavelength, then that same body also radiated strongly at that wavelength to its surroundings. If a body were perfectly black - that is, if it completely absorbed all radiation of all wavelengths incident on it - then that body would also emit radiation (according to its temperature) to its surroundings with a emissivity of one, and there was considerable interest in determining the precise wavelength distribution of blackbody emitted radiation as a function of temperature" (Ash, Rayleigh-Wave Theory and Application, 7). In 1900 and with this paper, "Lord Rayleigh turned his attention to possible mechanisms for explaining blackbody radiation, from the point of view of classical physics. He considered a cavity surrounded by walls at a uniform temperature (a 'Hahlraum') and then assumed that the 'complete radiation' in the cavity would be a summation of all of the possible standing waves of light radiated from the walls. He thus obtained an expression (Rayleigh's 'Law') that nicely represented the curve of blackbody radiation at long wavelengths" (ibid). Raleigh derived the 4 dependence based solely on classical physical arguments and empirical facts; he used the equipartition theorem to derive that the energy output at a given wavelength of an ideal black body radiator varies inversely with the fourth power of wavelength" (Wenner Collection). It is important to note that Rayleigh's expression "blew up' at short wavelengths (because there was a wavelength term in the denominator). This failure in the theory was called 'ultraviolet catastrophe'" (Ash). "Earlier work by Willi Wien had proposed - "on rather unsatisfactory grounds - an expression that fitted experimental blackbody data on the short wavelength side of the maximum, but not at long wavelengths" (ibid). Ultimately it would be Max Planck's efforts to devise an empirical formula that would reduce "to Wien's expression at short wavelengths and to Rayleigh's expression at long wavelengths. Almost by serendipity, he found such a formula… and then spent several weeks trying to derive the formula on a theoretical basis. He was finally able to do this by postulating that radiation is not emitted continuously, but rather in small steps of energy which he called 'quanta of action'. He published his formula in 1901 and thus began the age of quantum physics" (ibid). John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh (1842-1919) was an English physicist, head of the Royal Society and winner of the 1904 Nobel Prize for his discovery of argon. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor & Francis. (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). Complete. [viii], 576, [5]. In-text illustrations throughout. Ex-libris bearing only a discreet perforated stamp on the title page and small numbers on the contents page; no spine markings. Handsomely rebound in three quarter brown calf over cloth boards. Tight and solid. Five gilt-ruled raised bands at the spine; gilt armorial devices in the compartments. Gilt-lettered red and black morocco spine labels.         The River War, the only jacketed volumes known to exist, signed and dated by Churchill on 25 August 1900 while campaigning for his first seat in Parliament

Longmans, Green and Co., London 1900 - This remarkable first edition, final printing set of Churchill's second book, The River War, is the sole jacketed set known to survive. It is also signed and dated by a then 25-year-old Churchill on 25 August 1900, while he was campaigning for his first seat in Parliament. This is the earliest known work by Churchill for which first edition dust jackets survive and among the rarest prizes in the Churchill canon. Provenance is the collection of Churchill’s bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen, who has owned the set for nearly three decades. The dust jackets are thin, manila stock printed in black, exactly duplicating the binding print and illustrations. The jacket flaps and rear faces are blank. All first edition bindings are identical and only seven months separate the first and third printings, so it is probable to the point of near certainty that the dust jackets for all three printings were identical. The author's signature in black ink in two lines on the Volume I front free endpaper verso (facing the half-title recto) reads "Winston S. Churchill | 25. August. 1900." On 12 August 1900, Churchill wrote to his mother, Lady Randolph Churchill: "I must concentrate all of my efforts upon Oldham" and this is where he was campaigning the day this set of The River War was signed. He won his first seat in Parliament 37 days later, on 1 October 1900. This first edition, third printing is not only by far the scarcest issue of the first edition, but also the last unabridged issue to this day. All three first edition printings (2,646 sets total) are virtually identical, issued respectively in November 1899, February 1900, and June 1900. Only 140 copies of this third and final printing were ever made available. In 1902 Churchill (by then more mindful of political exigencies) revised and abridged his text, excising much criticism of Kitchener. All of the many subsequent editions are based on the 1902 abridged text. Being both jacketed and inscribed, this set defies the mundanities of a condition report. Nonetheless, we grade this set as near fine plus in good dust jackets. Both jackets are substantially complete, with all illustrations and printed text intact, but nonetheless with perimeter losses, overall wrinkling and wear, and minor soiling. The Volume I jacket shows loss at front hinge extremities to a maximum depth of .75 inch, lesser chipping to the edges, vertical creasing with tiny losses at the front hinge, a 1.5 inch closed tear at the lower rear hinge, and creasing and closed tears at the flap folds. The Volume II jacket shows loss at spine ends to a maximum depth of one inch, lesser chipping to the edges, closed tears extending into "THE" on the upper front face title lettering, some rear hinge splitting and fractional loss, and flap fold short tears and minor loss. Both jackets show mild spine toning and light soiling. The dust jackets are protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The blue cloth bindings are exceptionally bright and clean, with unfaded color and vividly bright gilt. Volume I shows a little wrinkling to the spine ends, trivial shelf wear to the lower edges, and bumps to the lower corners. The binding remains fully attached, but a little tender at the front hinge. The Volume II binding likewise shows a little wrinkling to the spine ends, just a hint of mottling of the blue color at the bottom edges, and minor corner bumps. The contents of both volumes remain unusually bright, with modest spotting substantially confined to prelims and otherwise bright page edges. The original black endpapers are intact, as are all illustrations, maps and plans. All folding maps are pristine and properly folded, with no tears or losses. All photogravure portraits, including the frontispieces, are intact, as are their original tissue guards. We find no previous ownership marks other than the author’s signature.         The Importance of Being Earnest

London: Samuel French Ltd, 26 Southampton St., n.d. [c.1900].. French's Acting Edition, 'The Dramatic Works of Oscar Wilde' No.1. Pp.[vi]; 52; [2], advertisements. Publisher's decorative pale green paper covers printed in black with 'Gothic' title in three lines (some show the title over two lines, priority unknown). Original price 1d,.6s. with later label 'revised price 2/-net.' Text features a few marginal stage directions/notes in pencil plus a neat pencil sketch to half-title. Some trivial handling but essentially a fine copy bearing the ownership signature of A.P.A. Pidcock-Henzell to front wrapper. An uncommon printing, conforming to Mason's 'later impression' featuring the three added preliminary leaves, sewn construction and a revised address on the imprint. We have located other copies but none with this particular Gothic typography on the cover

Contending Forces: A Romance Illustrative of Negro Life North and South

Boston: The Colored Co-Operative Pub. 1900. First. First edition. Illustration and cover designed by R. Emmett Owen. Red cloth decorated in pink and yellow. Front hinge professionally and invisibly strengthened else a lovely, just about fine copy of this important novel, the eighth published novel by an African-American woman, the first of the 20th Century, and one of the most important, notable for its realistic portrayal of lynching and prejudice in the unreconstructed South. Additionally, this was only the third novel published by a black-owned publishing company. Hopkins was the literary editor of Colored American Magazine, a short-lived but important periodical. Most copies we have seen have been bound in green, this is the first copy that we've seen bound in red cloth. A lovely copy of a very scarce and desirable novel. .

        The Importance of Being Earnest.

London: Samuel French Ltd, 26 Southampton St., n.d. [c.1900].. French's Acting Edition, 'The Dramatic Works of Oscar Wilde' No.1. pp.52. Publisher's decorative pale green paper covers printed in black with 'Gothic' title in two lines (some show the title over three lines, priority unknown). Original price 1d,.6s. Some trivial handling, chip to lower quarter of spine; near fine. An uncommon printing, not quite conforming to Mason's version; the preliminary leaves and adverts were never included here (ie the eralier text) yet the revised (later) address appears on the imprint. In addition, the binding is the earlier wired (not sewn) construction. A bibliographical complexity, but at least it's in nice shape.

An album of Chinese bird-and-flower paintings.

circa 1900 - 4to. (30 x 26.4 cm.), 59 drawings in ink and watercolour of birds and other animals, flowers and figure studies, twentieth century cloth. A most attractive album reflecting what Laurence Binyon called the Chinese "exquisite courtesy to nature" inspired by Daoist philosophy. 45 of the watercolours are of natural history subjects, principally birds, set amongst foliage. The remaining studies depict Chinese types and costumes. Lively, and showing great care and skill, they show the fluency and feeling of movement that came from the Chinese tradition of painting with the calligrapher's brush rather than pen or pencil. Most of the drawings are in colour, a few in ink monochrome. This style of natural history painting, based on earlier art of the Ming and Qing dynasties, enjoyed a late nineteenth century revival in Shanghai with its newly wealthy clientele who supported artists such as Ren Yi and Wu Changshuo. Under Wu Changshuo's influence, this style was passed on to Beijing in the early twentieth century through the art of Chen Shizeng and Qi Baishi. It focused on birds and flowers and figural themes more than the old landscape tradition did, and it emphasized decorative qualities, exaggerated stylization, and humour rather than refined brushwork and sober classicism. The present album is a fine example of the Beijing style. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
