RUND UM BERLIN 55 Ansichten nach Momentaufnahmen in Photographiedruck

Berlin Globus Verlag 1900 - First edition. Oblong folio with cloth spine and paper covered boards. The upper cover with a wirework design by Jessie M King, printed in green, blue, yellow and pink. A very good copy, some rubbing to the edges and colour loss to the corners. Ownership inscription of Carl Probst, an Austrian artist, on the title page. Rare in any condition. Internally illustrated with a series of 55 pages of black and white photographs of Berlin, two of which are double page panoramas. The cover design is the same as that used for the Centennial Edition of the Album von Berlin, which was probably one of the covers forming JMK's first commission for Globus. When Globus decided that demand for the Centennial Album von Berlin was lessening they used the remaining stock, with new banner headings and contents, for the Rund um Berlin. It is suggested that initial demand exceeded the stock of wirework covers available and it was subsequently printed with an armorial cover, making this edition very scarce.         24. Februar 1900.

      - 4 Original-Radierungen, bedruckt in Schwarz, Gold und Rot in Mappe mit Kordelbindung (17 x 20 cm), jeweils in der Platte signiert. O.O. (wohl Frankfurt a.M.) 1900. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Studies Scientific & Social.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited; The Macmillan Company, New York,, 1900. In two volumes. With numerous illustrations. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, spines and front covers lettered and ruled in gilt. With 114 illustrations and diagrams. Presentation slip tipped-in to vol. I, each volume with ownership inscriptions of Percy Fry Kendall. Spines slightly darkened, contents lightly foxed; an excellent, bright set. First edition, presentation copy to the British geologist Percy Fry Kendall (1856?1936), who supplied Wallace with photographs of glacial features for the book, together with four autograph letters signed from Wallace to Kendall, the last tipped-in to vol. I, dated 3 August 1902. The first three letters concern photographs and a map of geological features that Kendall has offered to supply to Wallace for inclusion in the present book. The first letter is dated 15 January 1900, Parkstone, Dorset: "I am sorry to trouble you again, but not having heard from you since Oct. 30th I fear you may be ill, or that you may be taking a great deal of trouble about the Map you spoke of" (Kendall has underlined the latter clause in pencil and added the comment: "yes"). Wallace describes the features he wants to illustrate and closes with best wishes for the new year and a hope "that it is anything rather than illness that has prevented you from sending me the photos earlier". Writing again on 7 February, Wallace thanks Kendall for the photos he has sent and itemizes the seven he intends to use; "Thanks also for the map showing extension of the British ice sheet ? PS I have some glacial photos from another geol. friend, but I can get no good one of a terminal moraine in a valley, though there are so many in Wales & England". On 18 February, Wallace returns two negatives (not present here), with thanks: "The glaciated boulder of Rhomb-porphyry is very interesting & useful. The gorge seems to be the Aarschlucht of which I have a better view. I have not yet been able to get a clear & good photo of a good terminal moraine. I suppose they are so common nobody thinks of taking them!" Wallace publicly acknowledges Kendall's help at vol. I, p. 136 in the published text of the book. The last letter, dated 2 August 1902, is evidently written in response to a letter from Kendall concerning the book itself, and opens by apologizes for a tardy response: "? I have been so fully occupied with writing new editions of several of my books, & with negociations [sic] for buying some land, & then with designing & building a house (now approaching completion) and making a new garden, that my correspondence has been greatly neglected. I am glad that you were at length convinced that there are rock basins in highly glaciated districts, but why their existence seemed so highly improbable to you & others as to lead you to think it even possible, that the occurrence of hundreds of Alpine valley lakes going far below sea-level ? while beyond glaciated areas they were almost entirely absent ? could be wholly explained by sufficiently rapid differential, & often very restricted earth-movements of which no proof has ever been given, ? I cannot imagine. It seems to me exactly parallel to the unreasoning disbelief in the antiquity of man, which still leads the bulk of geologists to reject all evidence of his preglacial existence, often without careful examination. To me, the cumulative arguments are, in both cases, quite conclusive, and are at all events so weighty as to throw the burden of proof on those who reject them in favour of others and for more difficult hypotheses. When they are obliged to assume hundreds of local earth movements sufficiently rapid to produce deep lake-basins, and also to assume that no such rapid and local movements have recently occurred in any non glaciated region, ? I say ? Give your proofs! The thing is far too improbable to be accepted without proof!" Kendall has annotated the letter in pencil: "ARW quite misapprehends my position in regard to both questions. I recognise that many rock basins are the result of glacial erosion. But a line must be drawn somewhere short of the great tectonic basins and the question is where? As to preglacial Man I have never had a doubt. PFK."

Remarks upon the Law of Complete Radiation," in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. XLIX, January-June 1900, pp. 539-541

Taylor & Francis, London 1900 - FIRST EDITION, COMPLETE VOLUME, OF RAYLEIGH'S FORMULA TO DESCRIBE THE INTENSITY DISTRIBUTION OF BLACKBODY RADIATION. "The claim that black-body radiation should conform to the distribution law that has since been variously attributed to Rayleigh and Jeans was not made until 1905. But the main conceptual foundations for that claim can be found in a two-page note published by Rayleigh in the June 1900 issue of the Phil Mag [this paper]" (Kuhn, Black-Body Theory and The Quantum Discontinuity, 1894-1912, 144). Here Rayleigh argued "that, at least for long wavelengths, the spectral energy density should rise linearly with temperature for fixed wavelengths" (Brandt, The Harvest of the Century, 31). Toward the close of the 19th century, physicists began to try to understand the behavior of blackbody radiation. "Thermodynamicists had determined that all bodies give off radiation according to their temperature (and emissivity) and if a body strongly absorbed incident radiation of a certain wavelength, then that same body also radiated strongly at that wavelength to its surroundings. If a body were perfectly black - that is, if it completely absorbed all radiation of all wavelengths incident on it - then that body would also emit radiation (according to its temperature) to its surroundings with a emissivity of one, and there was considerable interest in determining the precise wavelength distribution of blackbody emitted radiation as a function of temperature" (Ash, Rayleigh-Wave Theory and Application, 7).In 1900 and with this paper, "Lord Rayleigh turned his attention to possible mechanisms for explaining blackbody radiation, from the point of view of classical physics. He considered a cavity surrounded by walls at a uniform temperature (a 'Hahlraum') and then assumed that the 'complete radiation' in the cavity would be a summation of all of the possible standing waves of light radiated from the walls. He thus obtained an expression (Rayleigh's 'Law') that nicely represented the curve of blackbody radiation at long wavelengths" (ibid). Raleigh derived the 4 dependence based solely on classical physical arguments and empirical facts; he used the equipartition theorem to derive that the energy output at a given wavelength of an ideal black body radiator varies inversely with the fourth power of wavelength" (Wenner Collection). It is important to note that Rayleigh's expression "blew up' at short wavelengths (because there was a wavelength term in the denominator). This failure in the theory was called 'ultraviolet catastrophe'" (Ash). "Earlier work by Willi Wien had proposed - "on rather unsatisfactory grounds - an expression that fitted experimental blackbody data on the short wavelength side of the maximum, but not at long wavelengths" (ibid). Ultimately it would be Max Planck's efforts to devise an empirical formula that would reduce "to Wien's expression at short wavelengths and to Rayleigh's expression at long wavelengths. Almost by serendipity, he found such a formula? and then spent several weeks trying to derive the formula on a theoretical basis. He was finally able to do this by postulating that radiation is not emitted continuously, but rather in small steps of energy which he called 'quanta of action'. He published his formula in 1901 and thus began the age of quantum physics" (ibid). John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh (1842-1919) was an English physicist, head of the Royal Society and winner of the 1904 Nobel Prize for his discovery of argon.         On the Criterion that a Given System of Deviations from the Probable in the Case of a Correlated System of Variables is such that it Can Reasonably Be Supposed to have Arisen from Random Sampling" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. L. (50), July to December 1900, pp. 157-175

BOUND FIRST EDITION OF A SEMINAL PAPER IN THE HISTORY OF STATISTICS, Pearson's 'chi-squared' goodness of fit test, "one of the most useful of all statistical tests" and "one of Pearson's greatest single contributions to statistical methodology" (DSB). Pearson had found "the exact chi-square distribution from the family of Gamma distributions" - the import of this being that statisticians could now use statistical methods that did not depend solely on the normal distribution to interpret their findings (Magnello, "Karl Pearson", Rutherford Journal, I, 2005-2006). Where Galton thought all "data had to conform to the normal distribution, Pearson emphasized that empirical distributions could take on any number of shapes" (ibid). His efforts would substantially raise the practice of mathematical statistics and "ushered in a new kind of decision making" (Huber-Carol, Goodness of Fit Tests, 10). Karl Pearson (1857-1936) was a British literary polymath; the quest of his life was to find what he called "philosophical, spiritual and numerical truth" (Karl Pearson and the Origins of Modern Statistics). At Cambridge Pearson had learned to apply mathematics as a pedagogical tool for determining 'truth'. "In 1900 Pearson attacked the problem of curve fitting. Having fitted the best available curve to a series of data he asked what the probability that a sample from a population truly represented by his curve should fit it as badly as, or worse than, the sample in question But the question arises `what is a bad fit?' Pearson solved this problem by the invention of the function of observations called Chi-Square, which increases as the fit becomes worse. This has turned out to be an immensely powerful tool, and is used on a huge scale it is used as a test of agreement with hypothesis wherever the hypothesis is tested by counting individuals He obtained a solution of a problem which was of such generality that it had entirely unexpected applications" (J.B.S. Haldane, in Pearson and Kendall, Studies in the History of Statistics and Probability, Volume I, pp. 433). "Pearson's legacy of establishing the foundations to contemporary mathematical statistics helped to create the modern world view, for his statistical methodology not only transformed our vision of nature, but it also gave scientists a set of quantitative tools to conduct research, accompanied with a universal scientific language that standardized scientific writing in the twentieth century" (Magnello). In an article entitled "Trial by Number", [Ian] Hacking says that the goodness of fit chi-square test introduced by Karl Pearson… places among the top 20 discoveries since 1900 considering all branches of science and technology" (C.R. Rao, "Karl Pearson Chi-Square Test: The Dawn of Statistical Inference"). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor and Francis. Complete bound volume, inclusive of 5 plates. 4to (8.75 x 5.75 inches; 219 x 144mm). [4], 624, [5], 4. Handsomely and solidly bound in contemporary three quarter brown calf over marbled paper boards; scuffing, chipping, and rubbing at the edges of both the boards and the spine. Five gilt-ruled raised bands at the spine; gilt armorial devices in the compartments. Gilt-lettered morocco spine labels.
