The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night.

Burton Club, 1900. Manuscript edition with original leaf in Burton's hand in volume one. Octavo, 16 volumes. Bound in full green leather, elaborately gilt-stamped to the spine, front and rear panels with Arabic script, raised bands. Top edges gilt and gilt turn-ins. Each volume illustrated with a double suite of frontispieces, after Albert Letchford; the second being colored. In near fine condition. The manuscript leaf is a book review by Burton, of a French translation of Johannis de Capua's Latin translation of a Hebrew translation of the Panchatantra. An exceptional set. Richard Burton was an accomplished geographer, explorer, orientalist, ethnologist, diplomat, polylinguist and author who is best known for his translation of Arabian Nights. One of the great Arabists of his day, he had long wanted to publish an unexpurgated version of the "Arabian Nights" stories. The first translations into English, notably that by Edward Lane (1840, 1859), were highly abridged. In translating the Nights, Burton "attempted to invent an English equivalent of medieval Arabic. In doing so, he drew upon Chaucerian English, Elizabethan English, and the 1653 English translation by Sir Thomas Urquhart of the first three books of Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel" (Byatt).

Map G Hampstead and St John's Wood (1900).

1900 - London, 1900. Lithographic map with original hand colour. Sheet 450 x 280mm. Binding folds flattened, key placed at top margin. A map of Hampstead and St John's Wood, one section (of twenty) of an extended version of the incredibly influential Poverty Map, originally published in Charles Booth's 'Life and Labour of the People in London', a founding text of British sociology. Showing Hampstead, St John's Wood, Primrose Hill and Kilburn. The key gives seven colour codes for the degree of wealth of the inhabitants (ranging from black - 'Lowest class', through shades of blue and purple - 'Poor', 'Mixed', 'Fairly Comfortable', to red - 'Well to do' and yellow - 'Wealthy'). Booth (1840-1916), owner of the Booth Shipping Line, acted in response to an 1886 Pall Mall Gazette article that claimed that 25% of Londoners lived in poverty. Booth regarded this figure as wildly exaggerated, so recruited a team of volunteer researchers to compile an analysis of social conditions based on field visits and interviews with local police, clergy and employers. The first volume of 'Life and Labour' (1889), covering the East End, showed that 35% lived in poverty. The second series, covering the rest of the city (1891) showed that no less than 30 per cent of the city's total population could be classed as poor. See HYDE: Victorian Maps of London, 252.

[Paper Toys] Chocolat Lombart Souvenir de la Fête Four toys: policeman, private or scout, jockey, clown

Fine. N.d., circa 1900. The toy figures were meant to bring amusement by twirling them around on a toothpick. WIth their limbs attached but movable, the figures would then somersault and engage in spastic acrobatics. The figures came in an envelope along with an instruction sheet and toothpick or axle. We have all these pieces for all the figures we have. We do not know whether the company made other such figures, but we would guess that it did. The company goes back to 1760 and continued in business until 1957 when it was absorbed by another chocolatier, Menier. In the early 20th century it claimed to have the largest factory within Paris.

"Alongside;" being notes suggested by "A New England Boyhood" of Doctor Edward Everett Hale

Boston: Privately Printed Thomas Todd, 1900. First Edition, inscribed on ffe by the author to Samuel Bowles and dated May 1, 1900, one of 50 (or 57) copies (notation on AAS copy cites 57 copies printed but colophon states 50), of this privately limited edition, a memoir of the author's early childhood as daughter of Mark Healey, a Boston banker (President of The Merchant's Bank). Page size: 9-1/4 x 7 inches; [i-iiil] 100pp. + frontis half-tone engraving of medallion portrait of Mark Healey at age 84 by Edward Spring. Bound: grey cloth over boards with title stamped in gold gilt on front panel, 3 parallel vertical rules on either side of front panel, spine a bit sunned, else near fine. The memoir cites reformers such a Elizabeth Palmer Peabody and Maria Weston Chapman, amid the names of many Boston Brahmins. An attendee of Margaret Fuller's "Conversations" her publication on the subject provides the only first-hand account of this important feminist event. Dall became an important figure in the organization of the woman's rights movement in Massachusetts. A devoted feminist (long before common use of the term) prompted her book, THE COLLEGE, THE MARKET, AND THE COURT; OR WOMAN'S RELATION TO EDUCATION, LABOR, AND LAW (1867) which went beyond the suffrage movement, calling for removal of educational and legal disabilities based on sex and anticipated Charlotte Perkins Gilman's WOMEN AND ECONOMICS (1898) by 31 years. This charming memoir is a rare look into the privileged youth of one of one of the major women reformers of the 19th century, who helped shape today's world. First editions of Dall's works are quite scarce with none located online at this time - although reprints abound. NAW I, pp. 428-9.

        St. Augustine (Turn-of-the-Century Photo Album)

      - Uncommon photo album of St. Augustine, Florida, c. 1900. Billed as the oldest city in the United States (or, more accurately, "the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the U.S."), St. Augustine is obviously rich in history and this album includes a number of its most historic spots, such as: "Old City Gate", "The Sea Wall", "Fort Marion". "Hotel Ponce de Leon", "Hotel Alcazar", "St. George Street and Old House" and "Old Slave Market", etc. The printed photos are all crisp and bright and have white-lettered captions. And the ribbon-tied, olive-green covers (with their decorative flourishes) have held up nicely but show light offsetting along the edges. Oblong quarto, a wonderful celebration of "old" St. Augustine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Three complete of sets of illustrated printed betting tickets, 100, 200, and 500 numbered series, respectively, each measuring 95 x 50 mm. Leather shoulder bag measuring 340 x 240 mm, with original strap, working clasps, inner pockets, his name in gilt to one side. Very good condition. Little is known of gambling bookie Charles Drew, but that his residence and business were based in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, in Northeast England, he married Ann Brown on 19 Jul 1852 at the South Shields St. Hilda parish church, and that he actively, illegally solicited gambling on streets by circulating betting cards for horse races. On 15 March 1901, the South Shields Daily Gazette reported on Drew's illegal activities: "At South Shields to-day, Charles Drew, bookmaker, was charged with betting East Street on Thursday last." Detective Sanderson and other officers deposed to the defendant being in the street taking bets in the usual way from 12 p.m. till 3 p.m. on the day named..." Several decades later, the gambling pastime which was already firmly entrenched in British culture would finally become a legal pastime. 1 September 1960, BBC: "... 1 January 1961 gambling for small sums will be legal for games of skill... betting shops will take gambling off the streets...         Mimic War,

Edgar O. Clark n.d., ca. 1900, New York - Complete set of twenty-five six inch chromolithographed cardboard soldiers nailed to their wooden stands, in the original box and with the original fold-up tent. The uniforms represent the Spanish-American War. Here is a cannoneer, with foot soldiers, a naval contingent and the requisite marching band. One soldier bears a resemblance to Roosevelt himself. We note only three creases on the twenty-five soldiers; otherwise they are in fine, as new condition, each securely nailed to their original wooden bases. The tent has had a minor repair to the tab which keeps it upright, with a few old pinholes there suggesting a pin was used to close it before the tab was repaired. Overall a fine set in its original box with the lithographed cover. The box does have a couple of tears and lacks a small piece of the lid flap on one end else it is in very good condition.Beginning about 1857, sets of toy solders were produced on strips or sheets, to be cut out and assembled by the purchaser. About 1890, though, a process was developed to adhere lithographs to board, then nailing the feet to a small wooden block, making for a sturdy play set. Though McLoughlin Bros. was the leader in cardboard toy soldiers, Sowdon and Clark (and after Sowdon's death, Edgar O. Clark alone) was practically the only small firm to surpass McLoughlin's quality. Sources suggest only a few sets were issued, making them significantly rarer than their McLoughlin counterparts.

        Life of Rekhmara

1900 - (EGYPT) NEWBERRY, Percy. The Life of Rekhmara. Vezîr of Upper Egypt under Thothmes III and Amenhetep II (circa B.C. 1471-1448). Westminster: Archibald Constable, 1900. Tall quarto, original half brown cloth, tan paper boards. $6800.First edition of preeminent Egyptologist Newberry's pioneering work on his excavation of the Theban Necropolis, praised as certain to "shed a flood of light on the nature and methods of internal administration under the Pharaohs of the 18th century. Rekhmara was governor of Thebes and vizier of Upper Egypt in the reigns of Thothmes III and Amenhetop II." This exceptionally important presentation/association copy is inscribed in the year of publication by Newberry to his then assistant, fellow Egyptologist Howard Carter, who would later discover the Tomb of Tutankhamen: "To my old friend Howard Carter. With the author's sincere respect. 10/12/00" [with a flourish]. Containing 22 full-page plates, plans and hieroglyphics, including four folding and two double-page, in scarce original boards.Renowned Egyptologist Percy Newberry first traveled to Egypt in the early 1890s, where he "was placed in charge of the expedition which began work on the famous tombs of Beni Hasan and afterwards on other sites". Newberry, as a free-lance, carried out a survey of the Theban Necropolis (1895-1901) and later superintended a number of excavations, and advised on many others including those of Howard Carter" (DNB). Newbury had planned to publish the principal Private Tombs, but the projected series began and ended with The Life of Rekhmara" (Dawson, Journal of Egyptian Archaeology 36:101) On publication of this influential pioneering work, Newberry was praised for introducing evidence certain to "shed a flood of light on the nature and methods of internal administration under the Pharaohs of the 18th dynasty. Rekhmara was governor of Thebes and vizier of Upper Egypt in the reigns of Thothmes III and Amenhetop II". We learn that Rekhmara judged both in civil and criminal cases, that he had to attend to the assessment and payment of taxes, as well as to the levying of troops". In a group of interesting scenes the occupations of Rekhmara in his position of steward of the Temple of Amen are depicted. As such, he had to superintend all buildings devoted to the god, as well as the revenues that accrued to the god's vast estates. Of about equal importance to that of these documents is a wall-painting representing the receipt of the taxes of Upper Egypt". Such are a few of the results to be gleaned from this important work" (Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute 30:18). "The text from the tomb of Rekhmara at Thebes". is one of the best known of Egyptian secular inscriptions". It was first published in 1900 by Newberry, The Life of Rekhmara, pls. 9 and 10, and his version is still of value" (Faulkner, Journal of Egyptian Archaeology 41:18). Newberry's translation of the king's instructions to the vezir cites the king exhorting him "not to be 'mild, but severe in his orders'; not to be partial to the cause of the rich, or to make the slightest distinction between the wealthy and the poor, 'for every man is as every man'" (34). With 22 full-page plates, plans and hieroglyphics, including four folding and two double-page, along with an in-text map, full-page genealogical table and in-text illustrations. Recipient Howard Carter, a friend and colleague of Newberry, worked alongside Newberry on several key excavations in Egypt, and co-authored with Newberry, Maspero and Davis the seminal 1904 work, The Tomb of Thoutmôsis IV. The discovery of Tuthmosis' tomb led to a period of immensely fruitful excavations, culminating in Carter's 1922 discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamen.Text and plates quite fresh, inner paper hinges reinforced, slight edge-wear and a bit of foxing to original boards. A most desirable extremely good presentation copy with a highly memorable association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        A Diplomatic Woman

Sands and Co, London 1900 - 8vo. 181pp. + 2pp ads.Publisher's pictorial green cloth titled and decorated in black, white and pink to spine and front board. Minor bumping and edgewear, a trifle discoloured to the spine, a very good copy indeed. Plain endpapers, internally clean and bright. One of those forgotten gems which was actually pretty groundbreaking. A tumultuously gothic and purple roller coaster ride of espionage and intrigue, featuring the redoubtrable and skillful Madamoiselle Lerestelle; the "cleverest woman in Paris" it's a fair stab at creating an early female spy and furthermore producing a female protagonist who is smarter than most of the surrounding men, immune to romantic blandishments ("Not so much sugar if you please, monsieur."), is perceived primarily as intelligent with her manifest beauty being a pleasant afterthought, is independent both financially and by inclination and is tenacious enough to meet any challenge. It's all secret cyphers and evil Russian chaps, princes committing indiscretions with showgirls, stolen documents that leave France on the brink of war, and a rather complex conundrum involving a treaty between France and China. It's all world changing stuff and rather a far cry from missing jewellery. Like George R. Sims' Dorcas Dene, Madamoiselle Lerestelle is a force to be reckoned with and represents a growing awareness of the change in women's attitudes and roles. Hamilton proposed Churchill for the Victoria Cross for some of his brave acts during the Boer War, but Churchill, having resigned his South African Light Horse commission in order to act as a journalist, was ineligible.         Two Large Native American Photographic Portraits

1900 - (RINEHART, Frank A.). Two Large Native American Photographic Portraits. [Omaha: F.A. Rinehart, 1896]. One image measures 12-1/2 by 15-1/2 inches, the other 13 by 16 inches; both mounted on glass and framed together in old wooden frame; entire piece measures 33 by 20-1/2 inches. $15,000.Two splendid large photographic portraits of Native American (Sioux) chiefs""Chief Hollow Horn Bear of the Lakota Sioux, on the left, and Chief Afraid of Eagle, of the Oglala Sioux, who participated in the Battle of Little Bighorn, on the right""by renowned photographer Frank A. Rinehart. Both images are vintage enlarged negatives (internegatives) that would have been used by Rinehart or his studio for producing large prints, and show remarkable detail, clarity, and fine tonal gradation. In 1898 Smithsonian ethnographer James Mooney arranged for the Indian Congress to coincide with the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha so that the delegates could serve as a living ethnographic museum for the Exposition. Photographer Frank A. Rinehart, the Exposition's official photographer, was commissioned to do portraits of some of the 500 Indian delegates, "many of the most famous Indians of the day. Rinehart and his assistant and successor, George Marsden, made exquisite prints from the negatives of the Indians" (Mautz, 179). Rinehart's series of stunning photographs constitutes one of the most impressive visual records of Native Americans at the turn of the century."Hollow Horn Bear (1851-1913), Lakota chief and diplomat". was born in the year the Lakota people signed a treaty of peace with the United States at Fort Laramie". In 1868 another treaty was signed with the United States, which, from the government's point of view, ended hostilities and concentrated the Lakota on a large reservation in present-day South Dakota, with additional hunting territory beyond. From the Lakota standpoint, the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 was a peace treaty that recognized the Lakota as a sovereign nation and guaranteed a perpetual land base that could not be reduced except by cession approved by three-fourths of the adult males of the Lakota nation". Although Hollow Horn Bear recognized the necessity of adapting to the new way of life on the reservations and of living in peace with the U.S. government, he was a strong advocate of Lakota interests. At negotiations regarding remaining tribal lands in the 1890s and the early 1900s, for example, Hollow Horn Bear was repeatedly delegated to speak for his tiospaye and others, to insist that the government could not force land cessions upon the Lakota but must obtain the consent of three-fourths of the men as required by the 1868 treaty. Although he was not able to prevent the government from violating the 1868 treaty because a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1904 legitimated treaty abrogation, Hollow Horn Bear's presence at the negotiations clearly pushed the agreements in the direction of Lakota interests. Without his presence, things would have been much worse for the Lakota people". Hollow Horn Bear became a fairly frequent visitor to Washington, D.C., at least by Lakota standards. He attended the inauguration of President Theodore Roosevelt and visited with Presidents William Howard Taft and Benjamin Harrison. In 1913, while ill, he attended the inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson. Hollow Horn Bear died in Washington shortly after the inauguration". He was memorialized by the U.S. Postal Service in 1922 when it issued a stamp with his image. Hollow Horn Bear was a strong and perceptive leader among the Lakota people during the most traumatic period in their history""the transition from an independent native society to an indigenous nation struggling for survival within an encompassing industrial state. Hollow Horn Bear's skill and wisdom helped the U.S. government to see the point of view of the Lakota people and the Lakota people to see that some of the new ways could help them survive as Lakota" (ANB).         Immigrant’s Postcard Album

St. Louis, 1890s to 1910s. Leather postcard album titled, Grüße aus der Ferne (Greetings from Afar) with 50 leaves containing a total of 200 postcards primarily from Germany and Austria-Hungary with a few from Italy, Russia, and Switzerland. The album has some wear but is in nice shape overall. Almost all of the postcards are postally used and in nice shape. The name and address of the owner are written on the front flyleaf. This is a superb collection of German and Austrian postcards celebrating holidays, events, the military, and travel. Some of its highlights include * A demonic Krampus lifting French and Russian soldiers by the scruffs of their neck; * Several pig and clover New Year’s cards; * A New Year’s card showing a man firing a pistol in the air as two women cover their ears; * Several Easter cards with anthropomorphic bunnies and chicks; * A Christmas tree being decorated by dwarfs; * Three cards from the Exposition Universelle de 1900 in Paris, one showing the Eiffel Tower; * Kaiser Wilhelm on horseback reviewing troops; * Several Emperor Franz Josef cards; * A patriotic card showing ancient Germanic warriors; * Event cards for agricultural, industrial, and craft expositions; * A card for a hunting festival showing men and women in traditional hunting clothes; * Several humorous cards including an anthropomorphic Hippo gondolier and babies sitting amongst anthropomorphic mushrooms: * A Russo-Japanese War card with illustrations of soldiers from both countries, and * An advertising card for the Nordsee-Linie-Hamburg. Other cards include dogs, horses, pretty young women, children, a fencer, the renowned opera singer Geraldine Farrar, ships, currency, the physician-poet Justinus Kerner, the famous economist Ferdinand von Steinbeis, and “Grüße aus” cards from cities and towns throughout central Europe. This album and most of the postcards were apparently brought to the United States as a reminder of family, friends, and the home he left behind by Umrath when he emigrated from Prague via Hamburg in 1908 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri where he became a sales manager for the Steiner Electric Company, which manufactured meat choppers and coffee mills. No doubt this album was a comforting piece of the old country for Otto as he made a new life in America, and, as such, I hope that it remains intact, although that is doubtful as many of these cards would sell on for $20 to $100, and some, like the Krampus card (which does not have a red background and satirically portends the coming of World War One) could easily bring several hundred. Priced to sell at $5/card.
