        The Will of an Eccentric.

London, Sampson, Low and Co. 1900. First English deluxe edition. Profusely illustrated, and with one fold out chart/gameboard for tracking one's progress across the United States. Publisher's green cloth boards decorated and titled in gilt, black, orange and white with a suitably Verneian (a word that in this context means "Utterly Bizarre") scene of three men on a tandem (tridem?) cycling energetically across a desolate mountainous landscape whilst discharging revolvers at a pursuing pack of wolves. As you do. Minor scuffing and edgewear otherwise exceptionally clean and sharp. This de luxe edition was publshed similtaneously with floral endpapers and all edges gilt. Internally clean and bright, ink ownership to front flyleaf, the plate facing page 152 has at some stage come loose and develop a crease along the top edge prior to being reattached. A nice example of a madcap bit of scarce late Verne involving a lunatic race across America for enough cash to build your own nuclear submarine and fly it to the moon. Wacky Races goes steampunk, endearingly frenetic and madder than an eel flavoured hat. BBA sale 634 [Literature].

        Fitzebutze. Allerhand Schnickschnack für Kinder.

Neue verbesserte Auflage. Fünfzehntes Tausend. Ca. 30 x 23,5 cm (2) S., 40 S., (2) Seiten. Mit farbigen Bildern von Ernst Kreidolf. Mit farbig illustrierten Vorsätzen. Farbig illustr. Orig.-Halbleinenband. (Stark: Fitzebutze, S. 125 ff). Einband leicht berieben und leicht fleckig. Seitenränder minimal fingerfleckig, Seiten zum Falz hin leicht berieben. Eine Lage leicht gelockert.

Delightful Imperial cabinet photo by Downey, signed and inscribed on a card which she has attached to the photo and dated on the photo, (of Denmark, 1844-1925, Queen of Edward VII)

1900 - the inscription is "For dear Milly from Alexandra" and the image shows the Queen with her grandchildren – the daughters of the Duchess of Fife, Alexandra and Maud, she is seated on a sofa and the girls are wearing white frilly dresses and draped around her lap, 12½" x 7½", no place, Xmas the mount has been trimmed on the bottom edge obscuring the photographer's name but enough remains to identify it It is possible that the 'Milly' is Millicent Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Sutherland,1867-1955 who was a society hostess and social reformer.

        Original Drawing. Babylolia.

[c.1900?] Ink, pencil & watercolour on thin paper, with Crane's illustrated signature at lower left corner. Mounted on cream card. 22 x 28.5cm.A baby boy holding a rattle sits on a cushion alongside two dogs and a host of toys. He is in front of a globe with imaginary locations including the Bay of Milkolia and Lollipopolis. Mother (to the left) and father (to the right) overlook the globe and child from above. The title, Babylolia, illustrated with playing children runs across the centre of the image. An unrecorded illustration by the influential and prolific children's book illustrator Walter Crane, 1845-1915. Neither the BL or Copac record this title. In addition, the Ashmolean and the Whitworth Art Gallery, both of which hold significant Crane collections, can find no reference to a publication or drawing by Crane under this title. It is likely therefore that this was a personal drawing given as a gift to celebrate the birth or birthday of a friend or relative's baby.

Savrola, finely bound in full red morocco by Bayntun Riviere

London: Longmans, Green, and Company, 1900. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This magnificent British first edition, first printing of Churchill's third book and only novel is bound in full red morocco by Bayntun Riviere. Robert Riviere founded his bindery in Bath in 1829, and George Bayntun followed his example in 1894. Bayntun-Riviere is now the last of the great Victorian trade binderies still in family ownership and prides itself on continuing to bind entirely by hand. This exceptional binding features raised and gilt-decorated spine bands and gilt rule panels with alternating lion rampant, title, and author, covers with gilt rule borders, Churchill's facsimile signature in gilt on the front cover, gilt-decorated edges, and double-gilt rule and gilt-decorated turn-ins framing marbled endpapers, all page edges gilt and head and foot bands. Condition is truly fine. The binding is pristine, bright and clean with virtually no wear. The contents are suited to the binding, notably crisp and bright with none of the spotting endemic to the edition and no previous ownership marks. Also preserved is the original advertisement page for The River War and The Story of the Malakand Field Force immediately following the text. Even though Savrola was Churchill?s third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. Churchill?s dramatic tale of a democratic revolution in a fictional European state revolves around the titular hero. A very young Churchill was exuberant about publication at the time, though he would later make deprecating comments about the book. In his 1930 autobiography he wrote, "I have consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it [Savrola].? Nonetheless, he penned a foreword to a new edition in 1956: "The preface to the first edition in 1900 submitted the book 'with considerable trepidation to the judgment or the clemency of the public.' The intervening fifty-five years have somewhat dulled though certainly not changed my sentiments on this point." Irrespective of its literary virtues and Churchill's own mixed feelings, this novel is a window on the perspective and sentiment of a very young Churchill. The British first edition was issued from American plates, with only 1,500 copies of the first printing published on 12 February 1900. It was bound quite differently from its U.S. counterpart, in green cloth with Churchill's facsimile signature in gilt on the front cover. The British first edition proved less durable than its U.S. counterpart, and is most often seen significantly worn and spotted. This fine binding of superlative first printing contents is a strikingly beautiful improvement on the typical first edition. There are two states of the first printing, the second state distinguished by a title page cancellans with a blank verso. This copy is second state, ?manufactured and bound in a quantity of 650 [of the 1500 first printing total] prior to the 12 February 1900 publication date.?         Hand-colored Ladies' Costumes with Transferable Head.

(England: c. 1900). A set of nine hand-drawn and aquatinted costumes, each matted separately, with a delicately featured lady's head that transfers between the costumes by fitting into a slot at the neck. The costumes include a riding habit flowing down the side of a horse, outdoor wear, and dresses in which the wearer is holding a fan, a book, or pages of music. Five of the matted costumes have been hinged together. One sheet has a repair patch and two closed tears not affecting the image, another has one small closed tear not affecting the image, and a few sheets show light soiling. Altogether a lovely set showing a variety of English ladies' costumes and activities. (Seven of the cards measure 9 by 11 inches [23x28cm]; the other two are 10 3/8 by 11 inches [26x28cm]).

William Jennings Bryan’s Second Populist Run at the White House

Cincinnati, OH 1900 - "The Issue--1900: Liberty, Justice, Humanity." Columbus, Ohio, Neville Williams, 1900. Chromolithograph, printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company, Cincinnati, Ohio. 20 x 30 in; edges slightly trimmed, very faint mat toning; laid down on canvas. "No Crown of Thorns / No Cross of Gold / Equal Rights to All / Special Privileges to None"William Jennings Bryan tried for the White House in 1896, 1900, and 1908. The leading supporter of "free silver" against the gold standard, and a champion of the "little guy" against moneyed Eastern businessmen and bankers, Bryan came closest to victory in 1896. Surrounding the central vignette of the candidate flanked by American flags, nearly every theme of Bryan's long political career is represented in fantastic graphics. Quotes from his 1896 "Cross of Gold" speech on monetary policy and the free coinage of silver surround his name; a rooster and plow reveal his appeal to the nation's long-suffering Midwestern farmers; and "Blind Justice" looks longingly at Bryan's portrait. A bronze liberty bell dated 1776 juxtaposes a silver one labeled "1900 No Imperialism."Below, a white-clad Lady Democracy fashioned as a Jael-style avenger prepares to destroy monopolistic trusts by hacking the tentacles off an octopus that protects large American industries such as the U.S. Biscuit Company, American Tobacco, the American Steel Trust, and perennial progressive punching bag Standard Oil. (An octopus representing monopolies dates to the early 1880s but gained traction in the early years of the 1900s, notably in Puck magazine's famous 1904 cartoon of Standard Oil's tentacles surrounding the U.S. Capitol building.)The anti-imperialist plank is shown by figures representing Cuba, Mexico, and probably the Philippines appealing to the Statue of Liberty, shouting "give us liberty or give us death," paraphrasing Patrick Henry's famous line. The print itself boldly proclaims "Equal Rights to All, Special Privileges to None."William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) of Nebraska was a powerful orator and prominent populist who failed in bids for the presidency in 1896, 1900, and 1908. His support for farmers and laborers led him to oppose trusts and seek monetary, trade, tariff, and railroad rate regulation. After his third presidential bid, he became Woodrow Wilson's Secretary of State in 1913. A pacifist, in 1915 Bryan resigned after Wilson began to move towards fighting Germany in WWI after the sinking of the Lusitania. Bryan supported Prohibition and was an ardent anti-Darwinist. He died in 1925 five days after the conclusion of the Scopes Monkey Trial, where he defended Tennessee's anti-evolutionary position.

[Attributes: Signed Copy]
