Logische Untersuchungen. 2 Tle. Erster Theil: Prolegomena zur reinen Logik. Zweiter Theil: Untersuchungen zur Phänomenologie und Theorie der Erkenntnis.

Halle, Niemeyer, 1900-1901. Royal 8vo. 2 orig.(?) black half cloth bindings with gilt lettering and ornamentation to spines. A very nice set indeed, bound with the extremely rare original front wrapper of volume one. XII, 257, (1, -errata), (2, -advertisements); XVI, 718, (2, -advertisements) pp. From the library of Karl Groos (with the partial removal of his signature to front wrapper and title-page of vol. 1 and front free end-paper of vol. 2), with his extensive, neat, and very elaborate annotations covering all of the title-page of vol. 1 and 1/3 of the recto of the half-title. Sevaral underlinings of his throughout the work. Later owned by the historian Horst Stucke, with his ownership signature and the year "1952". Rare first edition of Husserl's main work, one of the most important philosophical texts of the 20th century. The "Logical Investigations" fundamentally changed philosophy and invoked the new philosophical era of the 20th century, -with this work Husserl founds phenomenology. Together with Heidegger's "Sein und Zeit", this must be considered the most important work of modern philosophy. Karl Groos (1861 - 1946), philosopher and psychologist, was a famous contemporary of Husserl. The two were well acquinted and several letters between them are known. Groos was especially famous for proposing an evolutionary instrumentalist theory of play. His 1898 book "The Play of Animals" was extremely influential and is still often referred to by animal behaviorists. His main theory is that playing is a way of learning and can be explained by the normal process of evolution by natural selection. When animals play, they practise basic instincts, such as fighting, just as human children play at the skills that are necessary to become succesful in the culture in which they are born. As such, he invented the notion of "pre-tuning".Husserl's magnum opus opens with an attack on psychologism, and he then introduces his brand new philosophical method, which he had still by then not fully developed, but which came to influence all philosophy ever since -Phenomenology! Husserl himself calls this a "Work of Breakthrough" (see his preface to the second edition). In short, psychologism taught that logic itself was not an independent discipline, but a part of psychology, and it is this notion that Husserl gives its final blow in his logical investigations, -far more definitely than Frege had tried to some years earlier. Husserl now establishes a philosophy that asks the question of the essence of the matter of perception as opposed to the form of perception, as well as the meaning of the difference between formal or pure and material laws, truths and determinations, -all based on his strong interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic. The work is the starting point for mereology, the formal first order theory of wholes and their parts. Mereology is both an application of predicate logic and a branch of formal ontology.Husserl is now famous as the father of phenomenology, and he decisively influenced the likes of Heidegger, Sartre, Carnap, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Ricoeur, Derrida etc. etc. Among this list of eminent people, we can surely count Groos as well.

        Elementary Brush-Work Studies

George Philip & Son London, Liverpoo 1900 - George Philip & Son London, Liverpool, 1900. First edition. Oblong Quarto. 11 pages of introductory text and contents plus full pages of text supporting each and every one of 24 colour plates with explanations. Original, first edition, brown, cloth hardback with black titles to front board). Coverboards are faded to the edges with a very slight bow. Just a suggestion of staple rust emerging in the front hinge inside, a little more noticeable at the rear. There is a little offset from the illustrations and each text page, has what is not an unattractive, light bleed-through from the illustration on the reverse of the page. It is likely all remaining existing copies of this work have a similar defect. The text and illustrations are otherwise in beautiful condition, unmarked and the entire book is free from previous owner¿s names or inscriptions. A significantly rare book, as collectable for its author¿s association with the poet William Butler Yeats (her brother) and a member of William Morris¿s fraternity as it is for the charming illustrations obviously influenced by the latter¿s work.         Collected Works.] Warwick Edition.

Boston: Dana Estes & Co., [c. 1900] - 32 volumes, octavo. Bound in green half morocco, titles and one-line rules gilt, raised bands, marbled sides and endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Some slight wear to corners, otherwise a handsomely bound set in very good condition. Illustrated in colour and monochrome. The Warwick edition, number 201 of 1000 copies only. The latest and most handsome of no fewer than 25 multi-volume collections of Bulwer's complete novels issued in Britain and America between 1875 and 1900. One of the most prolific and successful Victorian authors, Bulmer was outsold only by Dickens, and only Dickens was more widely translated. He it was who persuaded Dickens to alter the denouement of Great Expectations, Dickens having earlier profited from his friendly rival by borrowing the ending of his French Revolutionary novel Zanoni for his Tale of Two Cities. Bulwer's coinage of the term "vril" in his dystopian satire, The Coming Race, one of the earliest English examples of science fiction, lives on in the name of the famous beef extract product Bovril (a composite of "bovine" and "vril"), and his line "The pen is mightier than the sword" has forever embedded itself in the language.

        Photograph Signed

np, np 1900 - ONE OF THE EARLIEST KNOWN SIGNED PHOTOS OF WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS. A rare gelatin silver print bust portrait of Yeats as a young man, signed and inscribed by Yeats to U.S. politician and later U.S. secretary of state Bainbridge Colby: "To Mr. Bainbridge Colby with kind regards from WB Yeats March 1904." Inscribed in ink on the flush board mount beneath the photograph. The photograph is undated but likely predates the inscription by a few years: c.1900, when Yeats was in his mid-thirties. On the verso of the photograph mount is written in pencil: "Young Yeats photo by [????] not to be used without Mr. Yeats permission." (We have not been able to determine the identity of the photographer.) Yeats traveled to the U.S. for the first time from November 11, 1903 - March 9, 1904, where he presumably met Bainbridge Colby. Colby (1869-1950) was a young and successful lawyer with many well-known clients (including Mark Twain). By 1904 he had already entered politics, having just concluded a term as a member of the New York State Assembly. He would later ascend to U.S. Secretary of State (1920-1921) under Woodrow Wilson and was a champion of the women's suffrage movement. (It was Colby who issued the proclamation announcing that the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote had been ratified.) Gelatin silver print on original board mount. c.1900. Archivally framed with UV-protected museum glass. Photo including margin with inscription: 8.5x11in. Photo alone: 7x9in. Framed: 14.5x17.5in. Toning to mount, some abrasions to photo. AN EXTREMELY RARE EARLY SIGNED PHOTO OF YEATS. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

NEO GOTHIC DRAFT FOR A GRAND DOUBLE-STAIRCASE

Vienna [circa ] 1900 - Ink and water-colour drawing (Ver Good, slightly staines, tiny tears in margins). This stunning large architectural drawing shows a double spiral staircase, most probably planned for a larger object, such as a library or a town-hall. A pair of spirale staircases leading directly to the second floor is decorated with neo-gothic ornaments. The draft is signed by Heinrich Quiring (1854–1927), a director and project manager of an iron foundry in (Märkische Eisengießerei) in Eberswalde, north-east of Berlin. The foundry was founded in 1890 by Fedor Friedeberg and was responsible for casting metal parts for large constructions such as metal parts for buildings, bridges, sewer systems, and railways, as well as decorative architectural details such as fences, benches, and stairs. Metal parts on this plan for a staircase had to include fences, pillars and gothic ornaments. Heinrich Quiring was father of Heinrich Quiring (1883 – 1964), a German paleontologist and geologist.

[TWO VOLUMES OF GENERAL ORDERS FROM THE AMERICAN MILITARY GOVERNMENT IN HAVANA DIRECTING STATE AND LOCAL OPERATIONS AFTER THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR, 1899 - 1900]

Havana, 1900. Approximately [520]; [600]pp., including several folding charts. Over 200 separate imprints. Original half leather and brown cloth boards, spine gilt. Corners and edges worn, spine rubbed, boards scuffed. Initial leaves of first volume torn away but present. Several other leaves chipped and torn throughout. With many official signatures and docketing stamps. Good. Two volumes of orders promulgated in 1889 and 1900 by the American military government of Cuba after the cessation of hostilities in the Spanish-American War. Under the terms of the Teller Amendment to the Congressional Joint Resolution for war with Spain in 1898, the United States denied the intention of using the conflict as a pretext for the annexation of Cuba, and promised to leave the island following the termination of the war. The American military, therefore, oversaw the creation of the new independent Cuban government before departing in 1902. The documents contained in this collection consist of over two hundred orders in both English and Spanish from the Headquarters Division of Cuba that helped to shape the emerging civilian government. They include instructions for the running of elections, the organization of the courts and school system, the appointments for various government offices, provisions for tax regulations, and may other critical issues facing Cuba at its independence. The directives cover two periods, from January to July in 1899, and from July to September in 1901. Many of the orders are signed in manuscript by the assistants to the military governor for the island, Gen. Leonard Wood, including assistant adjutant generals J.B. Hickey and L.W.V. Kennon, and Brig. Gen., Chief of Staff Adna R. Chaffee. An interesting documentation of the first American occupation of Cuba.

United States of America. Publics Schools of the City of Chicago. High School Drawing Department. Herman Hanstein Supervisor. Paris Exposition 1900

Webber, P. Barth, Fred Schott, B. Natkin, J. Burtch, W.Z. Nourse, Chas Haugan, A.S. Field, Ernest Noods, Sam[ue]l Pruyn, F. McNair. : Hanstein, "The rotostat and goniostat : a teachers' class room device for instruction in projection". School Science and Mathematics , vol.9 (9), 1er déc. 1909). Notre volume est à mettre en relation avec un grand volume de la Chicago City-Wide Collection, contenant 82 dessins, toujours réunis sous le même titre et dans le même but par Hanstein : "United States of America Public Schools of the City of Chicago. High School Drawings Department. Herman Hanstein, Supervisor. Paris Exposition. 1900". * Texte de la préface : "Projection Perspective Shades and Shadows and Mechanical and Architectural Drawing. The drawings contained in this volume are selected from the regural four years course in constructive drawing. Pupils in the High Schools receive their intructions in drawing in two periods weekly of forty-five minutes each".

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Öl auf Leinwand.

Undatiert. Hunde vom Typ Cavalier King Charles Spaniel fanden erste allgemeine Erwähnungen 1486 (Jullana Berner The Book of St.Albans) bzw. 1570 (Dr. John Caius De Canibus Britannicus).

        Soldier's Training and Other Notes.

London 7 Aldershot: Gale & Polden, Ltd.,, 1900. Octavo. Original publisher's binding in Stohwinter "invisible cloth", title gilt to the front board, pale cream surface-paper endpapers. Folding plate of semaphore, tipped in swatch of Messrs. Stohwasser's "sun-proof" fabric. A little rubbed, folding plate split along the lowest fold, light browning, overall very good. First and only edition, extremely uncommon. Copac notes just BL, NLS, TCD, Oxford and Cambridge, OCLC adds copies at the Canadian War Museum and NYPL only. "Many of these observations had been written before the present war [in South Africa] had begun. The remainder are written from experience before the enemy. The ideas expressed in either case are not the result of theory" (Introduction). "Mad Jack" - not without reason - Hovell was commissioned in the Worcestershire Regiment in 1884, and in his career saw service in India, Africa, and, under an alias, on the Western Front during the First World War. In his Who's Who entry he claimed to have originated the use of telephones on rifle ranges in 1886, and the use of field telephones, 1888. "During his early years as an officer he studied the welfare and comfort of his men and the best methods of making them efficient soldiers. In 1895, when a captain on leave from India from the 1st Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment, he disguised himself as a private soldier and served as such with the 2nd Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment through the New Forest manoeuvres. This was done simply with the object of learning the life, the duties, the difficulties, and the troubles of a soldier on service, so that when in the future he came to command men on active service he should be in a position to know through what his men were going, to appreciate their troubles, to help them through their difficulties, and to make them contented. In this way he felt that he could get the best out of his men, and the country the best value for its money" (Worcestershire Regiment web-site, retrieved 29/04/2016). The present work is a compilation of some of his "tips and wrinkles" on holding formation in the field, the use of cover, entrenching, scouting, and other entirely practical aspects of soldiering. The book is bound in Messrs. Stohwasser's "invisible cloth", which has a mid-blue ground with a pale golden "flocking", the "invisibility" of which "can be compared with any other colour by placing the book and any other object of the about the same size a few yards apart, and then looking at them from a distance of 20 or 30 yards apart" (note on the rear pastedown). Hovell seems to have enjoyed some sort of special relationship with Stohwasser, a military tailor in Conduit Street, also recommending their "sun-proof fabric" as a lining for sun helmets, or for use as a "spine protector", used in the British Army as a prophylactic against the non-existent threat of "spinal sunstroke" and still in use during WWI. In the battalion under Hovell's command "the spine pad was abolished. This cumbersome piece of cloth had been worn for years in India. It weighed several pounds, and Hovell substituted a two ounce strip of coloured linen, which he personally demonstrated and it was taken into use. Each company wore a different coloured strip". Some of Hovell's other eccentricities seem to have been more problematic, in December 1914 "rumours were rife that private soldiers were making indecent suggestions about the conduct", but the court of enquiry found that "there is no ground for specific charges such as suggested by the allegations made by Privates Fletcher and Baugh regarding Colonel Hovell, at the same time they are of opinion that Colonel Hovell is undoubtedly eccentric in his manner and methods in dealing with his men, and that these peculiarities of his in conjunction with the treatment rendered necessary to his back are liable to misconstruction" (The Times). However, he was removed from his command and placed on the retired list, but in an attempt to retrieve his reputation signed up under at the age of 52 an assumed name and served for 5 months with some of his comrades from his old command in France before his health broke down and he was invalided home. He died in 1923.
