The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne & A Garden Kalendar.

London: S.T. Freemantle, 1900. Two volumes, thick quarto, many plates, illustrations, and textual vignettes, untrimmed, original lettered tissue-guards badly foxed and some spotting; a handsome set in the original stiff vellum boards, gilt-embossed hand-coloured coat-of-arms to front boards of both volumes, spines lettered in gilt, bookplates. A handsome set of this classic of both natural history and English literature - still one of the most readable of the world's great books. The work is richly illustrated by several of the great illustrators of the Edwardian era, including the famous bird-artist John Gerrard Keulemans.First published in 1789, the main book takes the form of a series of letters to the natural historian Thomas Pennant and the antiquary Daines Barrington, giving a remarkable account of the special habits of the animals he observed. The work 'holds a unique position in English literature as the solitary classic of natural history... an invaluable record of the life work of a simple and refined man who succeeded in picturing himself as well as what he saw. The reader is carried along by his interest in the results of far-sighted observation; but, more than this, the reader imbibes the spirit of the writer which pervades the whole book and endears it to like-minded naturalists as a valued companion' (Cambridge History of English Literature). This two-volume work also includes another of White's most cherished projects, the Naturalist's Kalendar, first published in 1795, two years after the author's death. He described the work as 'somewhat of a Natural History of my native parish, an Annus Historio-Naturalis, comprising a journal for one whole year, and illustrated with large notes and observations.'This is the large-paper edition, limited to 160 copies, of which this is number 14. The work is signed by the editor and artists: Bowdler Sharpe, J.G. Keulemans, Herbert Railton, and Edmund J. Sullivan.

The Strength of Gideon and other Stories

New York: Dodd, Mead & Co, 1900 362 pages with plates including frontispiece. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5") issued in brown cloth with prictorial front cover and spine, lettering in gilt. 1st edition. Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio to parents who had escaped from slavery; his father was a veteran of the American Civil War, having served in the 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and the 5th Massachusetts Colored Cavalry Regiment. His parents instilled in him a love of learning and history. He was a student at an all-white high school, Dayton Central High School, and he participated actively as a student. During high school, he was both the editor of the school newspaper and class president, as well as the president of the school literary society. Dunbar had also started the first African-American newsletter in Dayton. He wrote his first poem at age 6 and gave his first public recital at age 9. Dunbar's first published work came in a newspaper put out by his high school friends Wilbur and Orville Wright, who owned a printing plant. The Wright Brothers later invested in the Dayton Tattler, a newspaper aimed at the black community, edited and published by Dunbar. His first collection of poetry, Oak and Ivy, was published in 1892 and attracted the attention of James Whitcomb Riley, the popular "Hoosier Poet". Both Riley and Dunbar wrote poems in both standard English and dialect. His second book, Majors and Minors (1895) brought him national fame and the patronage of William Dean Howells, the novelist and critic and editor of Harper's Weekly. After Howells' praise, his first two books were combined as Lyrics of Lowly Life and Dunbar started on a career of international literary fame. He moved to Washington, D.C., in the LeDroit Park neighborhood. While in Washington, he attended Howard University. His wife Alice Dunbar Nelson was a famous poet as well. A graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans, her most famous works include a short story entitled "Violets". She and her husband also wrote books of poetry as companion pieces. An account of their love, life and marriage was depicted in a play by Kathleen McGhee-Anderson titled Oak and Ivy. He kept a lifelong friendship with the Wrights, and was also associated with Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington. Brand Whitlock was also described as a close friend. He was honored with a ceremonial sword by President Theodore Roosevelt. He wrote a dozen books of poetry, four books of short stories, five novels, and a play. He also wrote lyrics for In Dahomey - the first musical written and performed entirely by African-Americans to appear on Broadway in 1903; the musical comedy played successfully toured England and America over a period of four years - one of the more successful theatrical productions of its time. His essays and poems were published widely in the leading journals of the day. His work appeared in Harper's Weekly, the Saturday Evening Post, the Denver Post, Current Literature and a number of other publications. During his life, considerable emphasis was laid on the fact that Dunbar was of pure black descent, with no white ancestors ever. Dunbar's work is known for its colorful language and use of dialect, and a conversational tone, with a brilliant rhetorical structure. Dunbar traveled to England in 1897 to recite his works on the London literary circuit. He met the brilliant young black composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor who some of his poems to music and who was influenced by Dunbar to use African and American Negro songs and tunes in future compositions. After his return, Dunbar took a job at the Library of Congress in Washington. In 1900, Dunbar was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and moved to Colorado with his wife on the advice of his doctors. Dunbar died at age thirty-three on February 9, 1906 from tuberculosis, and was interred in the Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.         Die Traumdeutung....

Leipzig and Vienna: Franz Deuticke, 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (224 x 142 mm). [4], 371, [5] pp. Contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt with single floral motif (rubbed, slight edge wear and fraying at head of joints). Text only very little age-toned, otherwise clean and crisp. Provenance: Johannes Thiele (somewhat faded ink ownership signature 'Dr. med. Joh's. Thiele, 14.XI.99' to upper margin of title-page and his purple ink name stamp to front free endpaper); Spiering (inscribed 'E. 8.I. 1900 (Spiering, Berlin)' to upper margin of front pastedown; Eduardo Krapf*. A fine copy in an untouched contemporary binding. ----PMM 389; Norman F33; Horblit 32; Grolier/Medicine 87; Heirs of Hippocrates 2176; Garrison-M. 4980. - First edition of The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud's greatest single work and the foundation of psychoanalysis. Freud's first major work on psychology, Die Traumdeutung contains "all the basic components of psychoanalytic theory and practice" (PMM): displacement, regression, the libido, Oedipal impulses and the erotic nature of dreams. "Freud gave an unprecedented precision and force to the idea of the essential similarities of normal and abnormal behaviour, opening up the door to the irrational that had been closed to Western pychology since the time of Locke" (Norman). Freud has been ranked 'with Charles Darwin and Karl Marx as one of the three great revolutionary thinkers of the nineteenth century' (pace I. Bernhard Cohen, cf. Grolier Medicine). Freud's biographer and colleague Ernest Jones recorded that the manuscript of Die Traumdeutung was finished by 11 September 1899. Freud sent a copy to his close associate Wihelm Fleiss which was inscribed with the date 24 October 1899 (cf. Norman F33, Fleiss' copy). According to Jones, the work was "actually published on November 4, 1899, but the publisher chose to put the date 1900 on the title page" (Sigmund Freud: Life and Work, London, 1956-1957), I, p. 395). The first edition was of 600 copies, and as Eimas notes, the book "is now quite scarce". Initially, the work went virtually unnoticed. Jones notes that eighteen months after publication, "no scientific periodical, and only a few others, had mentioned the book. It was simply ignored [...] Seldon has an important book produced no echo whatever. It was ten years later, when Freud's work was coming to be recognized, that a second edition was called for" (Jones op. cit., pp. 395-396). *Eduardo Krapf (1901-1963), German-born Argentinian Jewish psychiatrist who fled Adolf Hitler's Germany and became the first president of the Sociedad interamericana de psychologia and the head of the Mental Health Division in the World Health Organisation.         The Game Birds and Wildfowl of the British Isles

Pawson and Brailsford 1900 - Description This is a single quarto volume 22 x 28 x 4 cm. It is the 2nd, and much improved and extended edition of an earlier work. It is in its original brown pictorial cloth with an attractive vignette of a standing pheasant and flying duck on cover. The spine of same cloth with yellow gilt title. There are 476 text pages in all including an appendix, index and lists of subscribers. The text pages have a standard format. First there is a brief identification and description of each genus followed by more detailed information on each British species of that genus. That information is headed by the common and Linnean name and historical taxonomic references. That is followed by accounts of geographical distribution, allied forms, habits, nesting and is completed by a statement on diagnostic characteristics. These written descriptions are accompanied by 41 full page chromolithographed plates showing 56 different species. These coloured illustrations are particularly attractive with the representative specimens in a borderless naturalistic background. They are by Charles Whymper. There is a special feature of this particular book. A piece of white card has been glued into the inside front cover. In large copperplate writing it has the inscription: ‘The Duke of Argyll from The Queen.’ Immediately under this statement, in different handwriting is ‘Xmas 1900’. On the following page, opposite the title, is another inscription: ‘The Queen’s last Present to me Christmas 1900’. There are two very small pencil annotations at the top and bottom right hand of this page. The Queen is question in Queen Victoria who died on January 22 1901. The Duke of Argyll was her son-in-law, married to Princess Louise the 5th child and 3rd daughter of Queen Victoria. For the thorough systematic nature of the text and the fine quality of the illustration Dixon’s ‘Game Birds and Wild Fowl of the British Isles’ is a very worthwhile member of any sporting or ornithological library. This book’s provenance, and its very timing, make it unique. Condition The spine is slightly faded and marked. The cover boards are very slightly marked. The binding is very slightly loose The corners are slightly bumped. All text pages are present and free from any marks, stains, tears or creases. All plates are present and are in immaculate condition. The overall condition of this volume is very good. Notes See also Egyptian Birds with its illustration by Whymper; British Game Birds by Ogilvie Grant and British Game by Vesey Fitzgerald. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Monograph of the Genus Casuarius.

London: Printed for the Society, 1900. Large quarto, original blue printed front wrapper for Transactions of the Zoological Society bound in, pp. 109-290 (complete); 18 coloured plates depicting cassowaries, 2 maps with hand-coloured hatching, 4 plates of photographic reproductions; an excellent copy in contemporary half morocco, boards rubbed, spine neatly rebacked to match, morocco label. Rothschild's monograph on the cassowary, the first detailed scientific study of the birds, published in December 1900. The fine plates present here are the work of the bird artist John Gerrard Keulemans.Rothschild had a particular interest in the cassowary, the large flightless bird native to the tropical forests of northeastern Australia and New Guinea. One or two species of the cassowary had been recorded in Europe since the early Dutch navigations in the region, but most were not known until the late-nineteenth century. The Australian cassowary, for example, was first seen by settlers when one was killed by Jackey Jackey during the ill-fated Kennedy expedition of 1848, while the first live specimen was not sent to the London Zoo until one was captured by zoologist Edward Pearson Ramsay in 1875.The birds became a passion for Rothschild, who collected sixty-two mounted specimens, and whose interest in the bird was such that he also gathered several live specimens, apparently allowing them to roam the gardens of his estate at Tring. The exquisite plates for Rothschild's publication in 1900 were done by Keulemans, with many drawn from live birds at Tring, and others from live specimens at the Zoological Gardens of Berlin.

Two Autograph Letters Signed, 4to, New York, June 9, 1948. With full signature in return address of transmittal envelope, and Autograph Letter Signed, 4to, New York, July 1, 1948

Johnson thanks his correspondent for writing and thanks him for his "kind and generous favor in considering my efforts in the music world for your collection." However, he asks his that "Under the Bamboo Tree" be withdrawn as a 'Caption' for "personal reasons of utmost importance." He is referring to the sheet music he published. He offers others instead, mentioning other of his most well-known and well-respected works, "Lazy Man," "Castle on the Nile" or "The Congo Love Song." He says, "But my real choice would be 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' (the Negro National Anthem) sung by school children and 'grown ups' for more than fifty years, and still is being sung." The Negro National Anthem he refers to was first performed in 1900 in Florida where he was born. Signed, "J. Rosamond Johnson." In the second letter to the same correspondent on Johnson's printed personalized stationery with ASCAP insignia in upper left corner, Johnson apologizes for not having sent "the enclosed to you sooner." Signed, "J. Rosamond Johnson." John Rosamond Johnson with brother James Weldon formed a successful team of lyricist and composer. In additions to their well known anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing," are the many popular hits they sold as sheet music such as "Under the Bamboo Tree." Our research indicates this letter is unpublished.

Crayon et encre sur papier. Original pencil drawing, heightened with ink (mixed). Signature stamp of the artist's signature in the lower right corner of the work, and signature stamp of the workshop at the back. This drawing is part of a series of ten studies for Bertin to 1920-1925. Very nice condition. Provenance: the artist's studio, referenced to catalog Atelier Louis Anquetin (Thierry de Maigret, 28/11/08). Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant-garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. With Émile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893, Louis Anquetin continues to explore new opportunities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, after a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias pictorial that will line the general art movement, and take away from his friends. Dazzled by the baroque art and its creative force, so he thinks his childhood friends were involved in a pathway leading to the death of painting. He believes in a "perfect painting" which is embodied in the re-remember the lessons of Michelangelo and Rubens among others. His work becomes more conventional, he advocated a return to business by offering to reflect on the a priori conditions of any possible form of art in accordance with the rules of perspective and anatomy, as practiced by the masters the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Leaving only a few works that can be described as monumental, Anquetin turns prolific with its many studies and sketches, who considered that the design was "a very powerful means of expression" compulsory foundation of all arts plastics. Working voluntarily countdown of his time, Louis Anquetin made possible the existence of an original modern figuration. By his obstinacy and his passion for painting, he has indeed prevented is completely closed the way to the great Western tradition. You can admire his works in many prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay or the Louvre in Paris, San Francisco and Detroit, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery and the Tate London, etc.. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Photograph Signed...

np: np, 1900. ONE OF THE EARLIEST KNOWN SIGNED PHOTOS OF WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS. A rare gelatin silver print bust portrait of Yeats as a young man, signed and inscribed by Yeats to U.S. politician and later U.S. secretary of state Bainbridge Colby: "To Mr. Bainbridge Colby with kind regards from WB Yeats March 1904." Inscribed in ink on the flush board mount beneath the photograph. The photograph is undated but likely predates the inscription by a few years: c.1900, when Yeats was in his mid-thirties. On the verso of the photograph mount is written in pencil: "Young Yeats photo by [????] not to be used without Mr. Yeats permission." (We have not been able to determine the identity of the photographer.)Yeats traveled to the U.S. for the first time from November 11, 1903 - March 9, 1904, where he presumably met Bainbridge Colby. Colby (1869-1950) was a young and successful lawyer with many well-known clients (including Mark Twain). By 1904 he had already entered politics, having just concluded a term as a member of the New York State Assembly. He would later ascend to U.S. Secretary of State (1920-1921) under Woodrow Wilson and was a champion of the women's suffrage movement. (It was Colby who issued the proclamation announcing that the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote had been ratified.)Gelatin silver print on original board mount. c.1900. Archivally framed with UV-protected museum glass. Photo including margin with inscription: 8.5x11in. Photo alone: 7x9in. Framed: 14.5x17.5in. Toning to mount, some abrasions to photo.         The Book of the London International Chess Congress 1899

London: Longmans, Green & Co, 1900. ii+232 pages with diagrams, index and tables. Quarto (10 1/2" x 6 3/4") bound in three quarter leather with gilt lettered spine label and original vignette affixed to front cover. Annotations by Leopold Hoffer. Provenance Galsgow Chess Club (Betts: 7-36) Limited to 500 copies. First edition. The London 1899 chess tournament was without a doubt one of the very strongest tournaments ever held on British soil. Almost every great master of the day was present including the past and reigning world champions. It proved to be the swan song of the old champion Wilhelm Steinitz but for Emanuel Lasker it was a glittering success which propelled him way beyond the other grandmasters of the time. All important players were invited. Many of these players were the champions of the country that they represented. Refusals came from Siegbert Tarrasch and Rudolf Charousek (illness). The businessman Amos Burn had to withdraw at the opening’s day. Fifteen participants played double rounds from 30 May to 10 July 1899, except for Richard Teichmann. He withdrew after round 4 due to an eye disease. His remaining games in the first cycle were declared as lost. Rounds were played in St. Stephen’s Hall. The time limit was fifteen moves in one hour. Participants were entertained by the City of London chess club at Crystal Palace and the Star and Garter Hotel in Richmond. A banquet took place in the International Hall of the Café Monico on 29 June. Lasker finished a whopping 4.5 points ahead of the group finished tied for second (Janowski, Maroczy, Pillsbury.) This is easily one of the more dominating personal performances in a tournament ever played. London 1899 goes down in history as one of the great Lasker victories along with St. Petersburg 1896, Paris 1900, St. Petersburg 1914 and New York 1924. There was a second section in the tournament, won by Frank James Marshall, with 8.5 out of 11. Georg Marco and Jacques Mieses were the most experienced opponents, and the tournament was not all that strong.Condition:Glasgow Chess Club stamp liberally used through out, date received and released on front end paper with secretary's initials. Some soiling through out. Rebound in attractive three quarter leather with the original vignette laid on front cover. A good to very good copy of a scarce tournament title.

Sailing Alone Around the World. Illustrated by Thomas Fogarty and George Varian.

New York: The Century Co., 1900 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine and front board in silver and green, top edge gilt, others uncut. Housed in a custom blue quarter morocco and cloth slipcase. Contemporary globe-shaped advertisement for the book and various newspaper articles about the voyage and Slocum's life laid in. Spine slightly darkened, small mark to upper tip of front cover, some speckling to rear cover, internally fresh. An exceptionally nice copy. Half-tone frontispiece, 64 illustrations. First edition. An extremely interesting and unusual presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to the brilliant American Polynesian ethnologist and philologist William Churchill and his wife Llewella Pierce, who feature in the book: "To Genl and Mrs Churchill in kind recollection of our meeting in Samoa 1896 and again New York this April 5th 1900. Joshua Slocum." Slocum visited the couple when he made landfall in Samoa on 16 July 1896, recording their initial meeting in the book on p. 154, having been invited to dine with them: "There was a lady's hand in things about the consulate at Samoa. Mrs Churchill picked the crew for the general's boat, and saw to it that they wore a smart uniform and that they could sing the Samoan boatsong, which in the first week Mrs Churchill herself could sing like a native girl." William Churchill (1859–1920), a scholar who "produced substantial work while in near total obscurity", became Consul General to Samoa in 1896. His commission was extended in 1897, making him also Consul General to Tonga. Slocum's comment on "a lady's hand in things about the consulate" is revealing: despite, or perhaps because of, Churchill's ability to command "vast amounts of linguistic data", he was paralysed when it came to his day-to-day affairs. Llewella once noted that he was "the best and dearest man in the world and the very worst manager of business". Churchill, was "a brilliant man, though flawed in those areas the world considers necessary for success." Samoan chiefs and missionaries alike acknowledged him "to be the best authority in the islands" on customs, language, and genealogy. His intimate knowledge of local customs and the language enabled him to discern the signs of coming civil war, but his reports to this effect were badly received in Washington, being seen as an over-involvement in factionalism, and led directly to his recall. Churchill and his wife returned to Brooklyn, where he would meet Slocum again four years later; in the meantime, the loss of his position was a great blow, and he suffered a breakdown in 1898. Thomas Trood, a resident of Samoa and sometime acting British consul, recalled in his memoir Island Reminiscences that Churchill was "a man of most versatile talent and a linguist unfortunately after leaving here he became insane and had to be placed in an asylum." As he recuperated, Churchill completed his most famous work, Polynesian Wanderings, the first major study to employ linguistic analysis to establish the origins of the Polynesian races in Indonesia. During the First World War, Churchill's unworldliness led him into a honey-trap in 1917, involving Despina Davidovitch, a German spy. Churchill, as head of the Foreign Language Newspaper Division for the Committee on Public Information, passed copies of his work to her under the impression that she was a British journalist. Late one night, Churchill was severely beaten by a German agent, suffering a fracture to his skull, and a few days the watchman who had been on duty was murdered. Davidovitch was arrested but died on Ellis Island in suspicious circumstances before she could be deported. An unusually well-preserved copy of this work, and highly desirable thus, the more so inscribed to such a colourful character from Slocum's "classic account of a small boat voyage".         Two Autograph Letters Signed, 4to, New York, June 9, 1948. With full signature in return address of transmittal envelope, and Autograph Letter Signed, 4to, New York, July 1, 1948

1900. Signed, "J. Rosamond Johnson." In the second letter to the same correspondent on Johnson's printed personalized stationery with ASCAP insignia in upper left corner, Johnson appologizes for not having sent "the enclosed to you sooner." Signed, "J.

L'Exposition de 1900. Description des Monuments, Palais, Pavillons et des principales Merveilles exposées. Accompagnée de Plans détaillés…

Numerous text illus. 128 pp., xxxii. 8vo, original publisher's decorative red cloth (corners rubbed), gilt. Paris: L'Institut Sténographique de France, 1900. First edition of this strange guide - bizarrely printed largely in a shorthand developed by the author - to the Exposition Universelle 1900 hosted in Paris. Navarre (b. 1874), not only founded the Institut Sténographique de France, he was also an important figure in the development of the typewriter at the turn of the 20th century (he belatedly devised a typewriter optimized for the French market but his audience had already adapted to the universal format). Additionally, Navarre authored a comprehensive history of shorthand, having traveled across the world to collect information about other stenographic practices. The present guide contains a number of photos and diagrams of Parisian landmarks where exhibitions were held. The final 32 pages comprise a survey of stenography in France, a history of the typewriter, and an illustrated catalogue of typewriters from the United States, England, Germany and France. The final item is a typewriter for the blind employing the "Hall System" which was much more efficient than that of Braille. Very good copy. WorldCat only locates one copy in the United States. Slight dampstaining on the outer edge of the upper cover and bottom of lower cover. Tiny hole on the upper joint.

        Map O. - Fulham (1900).

1900 - London, 1900. Lithographic map with original hand colour. Sheet 295 x 335mm. Binding folds flattened, key placed at bottom margin., laid on linen. A map of Fulham and western Chelsea, one section (of twenty) of an extended version of the incredibly influential Poverty Map, originally published in Charles Booth's 'Life and Labour of the People in London', a founding text of British sociology. Bounded by the Thames in the south, the northern extents are Hammersmith Bridge Road, the Talgarth Road, Philbeach Gardens, The Boltons and the World's End. The key gives seven colour codes for the degree of wealth of the inhabitants (ranging from black - 'Lowest class', through shades of blue and purple - 'Poor', 'Mixed', 'Fairly Comfortable', to red - 'Well to do' and yellow - 'Wealthy'). Although the colours of the map are predominantly those of comfort (with The Boltons and Fulham Palace the yellow of 'Wealthy'), there are roads lined with black: Grove Avenue and Langford Road, now both redeveloped, and Sladburn Street, just off the King's Road at the World's End. Booth (1840-1916), owner of the Booth Shipping Line, acted in response to an 1886 Pall Mall Gazette article that claimed that 25% of Londoners lived in poverty. Booth regarded this figure as wildly exaggerated, so recruited a team of volunteer researchers to compile an analysis of social conditions based on field visits and interviews with local police, clergy and employers. The first volume of 'Life and Labour' (1889), covering the East End, showed that 35% lived in poverty. The second series, covering the rest of the city (1891) showed that no less than 30 per cent of the city's total population could be classed as poor. See HYDE: Victorian Maps of London, 252.
