Two Large Native American Photographic Portraits

1900. (RINEHART, Frank A.). Two Large Native American Photographic Portraits. [Omaha: F.A. Rinehart, 1896]. One image measures 12-1/2 by 15-1/2 inches, the other 13 by 16 inches; both mounted on glass and framed together in old wooden frame; entire piece measures 33 by 20-1/2 inches. $15,000.Two splendid large photographic portraits of Native American (Sioux) chiefs—Chief Hollow Horn Bear of the Lakota Sioux, on the left, and Chief Afraid of Eagle, of the Oglala Sioux, who participated in the Battle of Little Bighorn, on the right—by renowned photographer Frank A. Rinehart. Both images are vintage enlarged negatives (internegatives) that would have been used by Rinehart or his studio for producing large prints, and show remarkable detail, clarity, and fine tonal gradation. In 1898 Smithsonian ethnographer James Mooney arranged for the Indian Congress to coincide with the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha so that the delegates could serve as a living ethnographic museum for the Exposition. Photographer Frank A. Rinehart, the Exposition's official photographer, was commissioned to do portraits of some of the 500 Indian delegates, ""many of the most famous Indians of the day. Rinehart and his assistant and successor, George Marsden, made exquisite prints from the negatives of the Indians"" (Mautz, 179). Rinehart's series of stunning photographs constitutes one of the most impressive visual records of Native Americans at the turn of the century.""Hollow Horn Bear (1851-1913), Lakota chief and diplomatÂ… was born in the year the Lakota people signed a treaty of peace with the United States at Fort LaramieÂ… In 1868 another treaty was signed with the United States, which, from the government's point of view, ended hostilities and concentrated the Lakota on a large reservation in present-day South Dakota, with additional hunting territory beyond. From the Lakota standpoint, the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 was a peace treaty that recognized the Lakota as a sovereign nation and guaranteed a perpetual land base that could not be reduced except by cession approved by three-fourths of the adult males of the Lakota nationÂ… Although Hollow Horn Bear recognized the necessity of adapting to the new way of life on the reservations and of living in peace with the U.S. government, he was a strong advocate of Lakota interests. At negotiations regarding remaining tribal lands in the 1890s and the early 1900s, for example, Hollow Horn Bear was repeatedly delegated to speak for his tiospaye and others, to insist that the government could not force land cessions upon the Lakota but must obtain the consent of three-fourths of the men as required by the 1868 treaty. Although he was not able to prevent the government from violating the 1868 treaty because a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1904 legitimated treaty abrogation, Hollow Horn Bear's presence at the negotiations clearly pushed the agreements in the direction of Lakota interests. Without his presence, things would have been much worse for the Lakota peopleÂ… Hollow Horn Bear became a fairly frequent visitor to Washington, D.C., at least by Lakota standards. He attended the inauguration of President Theodore Roosevelt and visited with Presidents William Howard Taft and Benjamin Harrison. In 1913, while ill, he attended the inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson. Hollow Horn Bear died in Washington shortly after the inaugurationÂ… He was memorialized by the U.S. Postal Service in 1922 when it issued a stamp with his image. Hollow Horn Bear was a strong and perceptive leader among the Lakota people during the most traumatic period in their history—the transition from an independent native society to an indigenous nation struggling for survival within an encompassing industrial state. Hollow Horn Bear's skill and wisdom helped the U.S. government to see the point of view of the Lakota people and the Lakota people to see that some of the new ways could help them survive as Lakota"" (ANB). Afraid of Eagle was a Chief of the Oglala people, and he was present at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, where General Custer met his demise. Bit of spotting and crackling to negatives, chiefly near edges; old wooden frame showing some scratches and wear, exceptionally good condition. Very scarce and desirable.

        Life of Rekhmara

1900. First Edition . (EGYPT) NEWBERRY, Percy. The Life of Rekhmara. Vezîr of Upper Egypt under Thothmes III and Amenhetep II (circa B.C. 1471-1448). Westminster: Archibald Constable, 1900. Tall quarto, original half brown cloth, tan paper boards. $6800.First edition of preeminent Egyptologist Newberry's pioneering work on his excavation of the Theban Necropolis, praised as certain to ""shed a flood of light on the nature and methods of internal administration under the Pharaohs of the 18th century. Rekhmara was governor of Thebes and vizier of Upper Egypt in the reigns of Thothmes III and Amenhetop II."" This exceptionally important presentation/association copy is inscribed in the year of publication by Newberry to his then assistant, fellow Egyptologist Howard Carter, who would later discover the Tomb of Tutankhamen: ""To my old friend Howard Carter. With the author's sincere respect. 10/12/00"" [with a flourish]. Containing 22 full-page plates, plans and hieroglyphics, including four folding and two double-page, in scarce original boards.Renowned Egyptologist Percy Newberry first traveled to Egypt in the early 1890s, where he ""was placed in charge of the expedition which began work on the famous tombs of Beni Hasan and afterwards on other sitesÂ… Newberry, as a free-lance, carried out a survey of the Theban Necropolis (1895-1901) and later superintended a number of excavations, and advised on many others including those of Howard Carter"" (DNB). Newbury had planned to publish the principal Private Tombs, but the projected series began and ended with The Life of Rekhmara"" (Dawson, Journal of Egyptian Archaeology 36:101) On publication of this influential pioneering work, Newberry was praised for introducing evidence certain to ""shed a flood of light on the nature and methods of internal administration under the Pharaohs of the 18th dynasty. Rekhmara was governor of Thebes and vizier of Upper Egypt in the reigns of Thothmes III and Amenhetop IIÂ… We learn that Rekhmara judged both in civil and criminal cases, that he had to attend to the assessment and payment of taxes, as well as to the levying of troopsÂ… In a group of interesting scenes the occupations of Rekhmara in his position of steward of the Temple of Amen are depicted. As such, he had to superintend all buildings devoted to the god, as well as the revenues that accrued to the god's vast estates. Of about equal importance to that of these documents is a wall-painting representing the receipt of the taxes of Upper EgyptÂ… Such are a few of the results to be gleaned from this important work"" (Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute 30:18). ""The text from the tomb of Rekhmara at ThebesÂ… is one of the best known of Egyptian secular inscriptionsÂ… It was first published in 1900 by Newberry, The Life of Rekhmara, pls. 9 and 10, and his version is still of value"" (Faulkner, Journal of Egyptian Archaeology 41:18). Newberry's translation of the king's instructions to the vezir cites the king exhorting him ""not to be 'mild, but severe in his orders'; not to be partial to the cause of the rich, or to make the slightest distinction between the wealthy and the poor, 'for every man is as every man'"" (34). With 22 full-page plates, plans and hieroglyphics, including four folding and two double-page, along with an in-text map, full-page genealogical table and in-text illustrations. Recipient Howard Carter, a friend and colleague of Newberry, worked alongside Newberry on several key excavations in Egypt, and co-authored with Newberry, Maspero and Davis the seminal 1904 work, The Tomb of Thoutmôsis IV. The discovery of Tuthmosis' tomb led to a period of immensely fruitful excavations, culminating in Carter's 1922 discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamen.Text and plates quite fresh, inner paper hinges reinforced, slight edge-wear and a bit of foxing to original boards. A most desirable extremely good presentation copy with a highly memorable association.

        Sister Carrie

1900. First Edition . DREISER, Theodore. Sister Carrie. New York: Doubleday, Page, 1900. Octavo, original red cloth. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000.Exceptionally rare first edition of Dreiser’s controversial first novel.According to biographer W. A. Swanberg, Dreiser “seemed to have had no inkling that he was creating a revolutionary work. He wrote with a compassion for human suffering that was exclusive with him in America. He wrote with a tolerance for transgression that was as exclusive and as natural” (De Grazia, 101). He was aware, however, that others would find the novel controversial. Even before it was submitted he had made attempts to revise, or “clean up” his novel, at the urging of his first wife, Sarah Osborne White, “Jug.” With her help and that of his good friend Arthur Henry, he made many changes and cut an estimated 36,000 words from the manuscript. Franklin Doubleday, who was alarmed when he returned from Europe to find that his firm had taken the work, “went on to publish Carrie, but on his own terms. He personally edited the proofs and insisted to Dreiser that all the profanities be removed and certain ‘suggestive’ passages altered… The much-laundered Carrie became spotless; worse-yet, as Dreiser’s biographer Richard Lingeman has said, Carrie’s cheap-looking binding and lettering ‘would have been more appropriate on a plumbing manual.’ Frank Doubleday carried out the terms of the contract for Carrie in the most minimal way possible, ‘in the hope that it would not attract much notice” (DeGrazia, 103). Because of the alterations Sister Carrie avoided court prosecution but Dreiser felt it was “stillborn.” The expurgated text made Carrie’s motivations incoherent, and bad reviews killed the novel on its first publication. Dreiser was deeply affected by these struggles and did not publish another novel for ten years. H.L. Mencken spearheaded the novel’s critical reappraisal, and it came to be recognized as a groundbreaking and influential novel of American realism and naturalism. As Sinclair Lewis said of Dreiser in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1930, “without his pioneering, I doubt if any of us could, unless we liked to be sent to jail, seek to express life, beauty and terror” (Parker & Kermode, 2). Doubleday’s records indicate, “the first edition consisted of 1008 copies, of which 129 were sent out for review, 465 were sold, and the balance, 423 copies, were turned over to [remainder house] J. F. Taylor & Company” (Orton, Dreiseriana, 17). This first edition is extremely rare. In 1929 Vrest Orton wrote that Sister Carrie “is much scarcer than is generally supposed… A book printed in 1900 to the number of only 1008 copies, nearly half of them remaindered (everyone knows the fate of remainders) leaving only 546 actually sold to the trade, is, in 1930, a very scarce book. In the course of 30 years, any edition of 1000 copies of a novel will, for the most part, become lost, destroyed or worn out. And most copies that do exist, will not do so in a very good state” (Orton, 18). McDonald 28-32. Orton 16-19. Owner inscription on half title.Scattered foxing and soiling to text as often, inner paper hinges split, closed tear to final leaf, light wear to sound original cloth. A very good copy. Extremely rare and desirable.

Exceptional gunmetal cigarette case with impressive gold monogram on the front (Rama V, 1853-1910, King of Thailand from 1868)]

1900 - with a blue jewel in the gold mounted clasp on the front, 3½ inches wide by 2½ inches deep and half inch high, no place, c. The King of Siam was strongly attracted to all things Western and was an enthusiastic customer of Faberge and other leading European Jewellers. In autumn 2003, Dr. Henry D. Ginsburg, Siamese expert at the British Library, examined this cigarette case and confirmed that the monogram under the Siamese crown was that of Chulalongkorn. He also said that Chulalongkorn presented some cigarette boxes on his European trip in 1897, which took him as far as North Cape in Norway though it is not possible to be sure if this is one of them.

The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine - Vol LX : New Series Vol XXXVIII, May-Oct 1900 (Increasing Human Energy by Nikola Tesla)

New York / London: The Century Co. / Macmillan & Co., Ltd, 1900. Hardcover. Good. The first publication of Nikola Tesla's photographically illustrated work "The Problem of Increasing Human Energy, with Special Reference to the Harnessing of the Sun's Energy" and, with "Illustrated by the Writer's Electrical Experiments, Now First Published" stated both immediately under his name and in the table of contents. Three-quarter leather with brown cloth over boards, large 8vo (9-5/16 inches tall), pp. viii (index to Vol. VI), 960, 86 (ads), illustrated throughout. Six consecutive issues, all bound with front covers - but lacking back covers and terminal ads from all except the final issue. Volume covers worn, joints completely cracked, both hinges stregthened with an archival linen repair, a library rubber stamp to foot of text block edge, front pastedown and "withdrawal" stamp to ffep, text block slightly toned, marginally trimmed with an occasional soil spot or repaired tear noted. Both the Tesla article and it's front cover (Vol. XL No. 2) are clean and unmarked. An important and long essay by Tesla, who presents here (pp. 175-211) the first practical telautomation, many new energy-related experiments and muses "The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter - for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way. He lives and labors and hopes with the poet..." - most certainly an uncommon genius, within an uncommon man.

        The Will of an Eccentric.

London, Sampson, Low and Co. 1900. First English deluxe edition. Profusely illustrated, and with one fold out chart/gameboard for tracking one's progress across the United States. Publisher's green cloth boards decorated and titled in gilt, black, orange and white with a suitably Verneian (a word that in this context means "Utterly Bizarre") scene of three men on a tandem (tridem?) cycling energetically across a desolate mountainous landscape whilst discharging revolvers at a pursuing pack of wolves. As you do. Minor scuffing and edgewear otherwise exceptionally clean and sharp. This de luxe edition was publshed similtaneously with floral endpapers and all edges gilt. Internally clean and bright, ink ownership to front flyleaf, the plate facing page 152 has at some stage come loose and develop a crease along the top edge prior to being reattached. A nice example of a madcap bit of scarce late Verne involving a lunatic race across America for enough cash to build your own nuclear submarine and fly it to the moon. Wacky Races goes steampunk, endearingly frenetic and madder than an eel flavoured hat. BBA sale 634 [Literature].

        Fitzebutze. Allerhand Schnickschnack für Kinder.

Neue verbesserte Auflage. Fünfzehntes Tausend. Ca. 30 x 23,5 cm (2) S., 40 S., (2) Seiten. Mit farbigen Bildern von Ernst Kreidolf. Mit farbig illustrierten Vorsätzen. Farbig illustr. Orig.-Halbleinenband. (Stark: Fitzebutze, S. 125 ff). Einband leicht berieben und leicht fleckig. Seitenränder minimal fingerfleckig, Seiten zum Falz hin leicht berieben. Eine Lage leicht gelockert.

Delightful Imperial cabinet photo by Downey, signed and inscribed on a card which she has attached to the photo and dated on the photo, (of Denmark, 1844-1925, Queen of Edward VII)

1900 - the inscription is "For dear Milly from Alexandra" and the image shows the Queen with her grandchildren – the daughters of the Duchess of Fife, Alexandra and Maud, she is seated on a sofa and the girls are wearing white frilly dresses and draped around her lap, 12½" x 7½", no place, Xmas the mount has been trimmed on the bottom edge obscuring the photographer's name but enough remains to identify it It is possible that the 'Milly' is Millicent Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Sutherland,1867-1955 who was a society hostess and social reformer.
