Autographe original, L' acteur français Coquelin

1900 - Photographie,Planche originale ayant servie de maquette au livre de Lu (Lefevre Utile) sur les contemporains célébres, provenance directe de l'éditeur, autographe manuscrit et photographie originale. Coquelin was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Pas-de-Calais. He was originally intended to follow his father's trade of baker (he was once called "un boulanger manqué" by a hostile critic), but his love of acting led him to the Conservatoire, where he entered Régnier's class in 1859. He won the first prize for comedy within a year, and made his début on 7 December 1860 at the Comédie-Française as the comic valet, Gros-René, in Molière's Le Dépit amoureux, but his first great success was as Figaro in The Barber of Seville, in the following year. It was an honor for Coquelin to be a part of the Comédie-Française at such a young age. This company had already been in existence for around 150 years. He was made sociétaire in 1864. There were 21 3?4 shares and they were divided among the lead actors, known as societaires. The societaires co-manage, choose plays, and share profits. When there was an opening caused by retirement, resignation, or death, it was filled by a member of the pensionnaires. And just four years after joining the Comédie-Française, Coquelin became one of the elite societaires. During the next twenty-two years he created at the Comédie Française the leading parts in forty-four new plays, including Théodore de Banville's Gringoire (1867), Paul Ferrier's Tabarin (1871), Émile Augier's Paul Forestier (1871), L'Étrangère (1876) by the younger Dumas, Charles Lomon's Jean Dacier (1877), Édouard Pailleron's Le Monde où l'on s'ennuie (1881), Erckmann and Chatrian's Les Rantzau (1884). In consequence of a dispute with the authorities over the question of his right to make provincial tours in France he resigned in 1886. Three years later, however, the breach was healed; and after a successful series of tours in Europe and the United States he rejoined the Comédie-Française as pensionnaire in 1890.[2] During his time away from the Comédie he wrote his book Art and the Actor. It was during this period that he took the part of Labussière, in the production of Victorien Sardou's Thermidor, which was interdicted by the government after three performances. In 1892 he broke definitely with the Comédie-Française, and toured for some time through the capitals of Europe with a company of his own; in New York, for instance, he performed at Abbey's Theatre in 1894, playing the lead in Tartuffe (his son Jean played Orgon) and Mascarille in Les Précieuses ridicules.[3] In 1895 he joined the Renaissance theatre in Paris, and played there until he became director of the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in 1897. Here he won successes in Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac (1897), which he repeated in the summer of 1898 at the Lyceum Theatre, London, Émile Bergerat's Plus que reine (1899), Catulle Mendès's Scarron (1905), and Alfred Capus and Lucien Descaves' L'Attentat (1906). In 1900 Coquelin toured in America with Sarah Bernhardt, appeared on Broadway's Garden Theatre in a production of Cyrano de Bergerac (Bernhardt played Roxane).[4] He made his only film, the duel scene from Cyrano de Bergerac with sound recording on phonograph cylinder (see also Sound film/Early steps). The film is thought to be the first ever made with both color and sound. On their return to France he continued with his old colleague to appear in L'Aiglon, at the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt. He was rehearsing for the creation of the leading part in Rostand's Chantecler, which he was to produce, when he died suddenly in Paris in 1909.[2] The New York Times printed an obituary, in which it described many tributes to the dead actor, including a visit by the personal secretary of the President of the Republic, Armand Fallières. // Circa 1900 // Tirage albuminé // Format (cm): 22x31cm [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Volume l was a slight slant Portrait of Isabella Bird frontis volume I. One of the most celebrated lady explorers of the late 19th century describes a lenghy trip her last trip, through southern China to the tribal areas along eastern border of Tibet. A handsome set though possibly married. Texts for both are clean, tight and unmarked. Dark blue cloth boards with a design of a Chinese gate gold-stamped on cover, gilt top edge of pages. Both have some corner and spine end bumping. Volume ll has the bookplate and an inscription to Lawrence C. Phipps, (1862 - 1958) a well-know businessman turned U.S. senator from Colorado Phipps Mansion was built as a retirement home for the late U.S. Sen. Lawrence C. Phipps who made his fortune with the Carnegie Steel Co. before retiring to Colorado. Phipps served in the United States Senate from 1918 to 1930. The home cost $280,000 to build in 1933 and is considered one of the handsomest mansions in the state. It stands on the grounds of the University of Denver. The inscription reads" Lawrence C. Phipps from Lizzie 8/30/1900." To the best of my research, the "Lizzie" in question is not Isabella Bird. First American Edition. Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.       A collection of 15 woodcuts showing various stages of the steel making process. A few tiny holes to the later pages and rear cover, otherwise in excellent order. A striking collection. Scarce. No copy located on Worldcat or COPAC. Viva Talbot (1900-1983) was a talented amateur artist who specialised in wood engraving. She knew many of the prominent wood engravers of the 1920s and 1930s, including Robert Gibbings, from whom she may have had some tuition. Her father, Benjamin Talbot (1864-1947), was the inventor of the Talbot Tilting Furnace which transformed the open hearth method of producing steel. He was involved in iron companies in Middlesbrough and Stockton and hence Viva, unusually for a woman of that era, had access to the steelworks. Viva Talbot married Thomas Nussey in 1941, and within a few years she became Lady Nussey when Thomas inherited a baronetcy from his father. Viva's work remained largely undiscovered until 2006 when Dr Joan Heggie of the University of Teesside came across her steel making woodcuts in the British Steel Collection at the Teesside archives. These works and others by the artist became the subject of an exhibition at the Dorman Museum, Middlesbrough in 2010.

( Oil on canvas, signed at the bottom right corner, not dated.         The Burlington Route Runs Daily Through Trains Between Chicago, Peoria, or St. Louis.

Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad / Rand, McNally & Co. Chicago. No date. Early 1900s? - Color map, 27 3/4 x 44 inches on sheet 29 x 45 1/2 inches. Was originally issued as a wall map on rollers, which have been removed to have it professionally mounted on linen. Vertical tear across the centre of the map, neatly joined in the main body of the United States, but visible in the lower centre area of ocean, other minor repaired edge tears, toning to edges and light toning to a band along the bottom of the map. Professional restoration has made it an eminently displayable map. There are three attractive engraved vignettes at lower left, showing the interiors of the cars: "Interior View of Pullman Palace Sleeping Car Running on the Burlington Route"; "Interior View of Burlington Route Passenger Chair Car"; "Interior View of Burlington Route Dining Car." The vignettes suggest a late 1800s date for the map. The wall sized map shows the Burlington Route with its extensive connections. An interesting independently issued railroad map.

Scrapbook compiled by members of the Vivian family throughout the 19th century.

      - n.p. c1800-1900. Solid folio (48x30cm) half calf (rebacked); some 120 leaves of blue paper packed both sides with ephemera, prints and news clipping, and many extra inserts. It won't take as long to go through this as it took the two or three or four generations of Vivians to compile it but still, it'll take a while. A cavalcade of the 19th century as lived by the privileged. On the first page are tickets for prestigious seats at the coronation of George IV - more elaborately produced as security against forgery than a banknote it looks to me. On the last page are programmes and menus for the 1902 South African dinner of the 3rd Scots Guards and the catalogue of the band's instruments sold by auction at the end of the dinner. In between, the adventures, pre-occupations and fancies of the Vivians. There were plenty of Vivians, well to do Vivians, and more than one George - the name that reappears on European travel ephemera in the 1820s and 30s - but the places and dates defy coincidence and let us identify George as George Vivian 1798-1873 of Claverton Manor, painter and artist of luxurious books of views of Portugal, Spain and Italy, member of the Society of Dilettanti, and big-wig in the English art world - he was one of the commissioners for the new parliament. I took photos of some early pages and stopped before it got out of hand. In those pages you can see: the tickets to George's coronation; one of three quarto size broadsides printed in Hyde Park during the peace celebrations in 1814; a mock 1823 banknote issued by Self & Co. of Threadneedle Street promising to give the most superior haircut in Europe or forfeit one hundred pounds; an 1823 Florentine theatre bill; a folio four page catalogue in French and English of goods sold by Couture, perfumer and liquorist of Florence; a Spanish bill for a Donizetti opera and a Catalan diligence ticket from the 1830s; an 'extraordinary gazette' from Madrid announcing the death of Ferdinand, a handbill for Donizetti's Anna Boleyn and a broadside sonnet to Queen Isabel II; a collection of illustrious continental visiting guards that surprised me with the variety and sophistication of printing and card stock; the first part of a long broadside programme for Victoria's coronation - the rest on the following two pages, followed by the similar programme for the wedding of Victoria and Albert; a large 1836 bill of fare for a Berlin restaurant - sorry, wrong page, a bill of fare for a French restaurant facing a papal certificate for a relic and a sketch of a masquarede parade; some English visiting cards, a group invitation from Vivian, Lord Sandwich, Mr Hope and Lord Redesdale to The Stadium at Cremorne House (this was de Berenger's sporting club - see The Morning Post, July 16 1836, for an account of the splendid fete champetre), an invitation to privately view Strawberry Hill and a sketch of a woman; a large 1835 ticket of residence for St Petersburg.

(Paris?) N.P. n.d. (ca. 1900). A tradesman's sample album with lovely examples, shown in original photographs, of elaborate passementerie of the sort perfected by the French over the centuries. Here the examples, displayed mostly one to a photograph, are most likely intended as applications to furnishing. Most are tassels with highly complex interweavings of silk or similar threads forming amazing ornamental forms. Some rosettes and braids are also displayed as part of the "guirlande" that would have held the tassels. There are also a few illustrations are of what appear to be tie-backs. The items have stamped stock numbers on the mounting boards; some show this number within the photograph itself. The samples are quite exquisite; not all are shown to advantage by the photographer, but composition and intricacy of execution is evident in all. Oblong post-bound album (27 x 18 cm); 52 original photographs mounted on heavy card stock + 3 loose photographs, two of which are duplicates. Original leather backed album with pebbled boards and metal binding posts; scuffed; small tear at joint between backing and boards on upper cover; mounting card stock most often browned or foxed, but photos usually clean, with some exceptions: first photo soiled, at least six of the photos are quite faded, more from the photographic process, itself, than from exposure within the album; all plates have stamped numbers or, in a few instances, a number placed within the photograph; some plates have penned notes next to the numbers. One of the laid in loose plates is heavily creased. .
