Claude Monet
1899. A rare letter of Monet relating directly to one of his most acclaimed works Claude Monet was the founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting Impression, Sunrise. He was also one of the Impressionists whose fervent minds moved to the early 20th century movement, Fauvism. This style, while still focusing on natural subjects, used strong colors and bold brush strokes to elicit emotion. In 1899, Monet first turned to the subject of water lilies with his painting The White Water Lilies. At that time he was growing white water lilies in the water garden he had installed on his property at Giverny. The garden, and its pond in particular, became the artist's great source of inspiration. He said: "I have come back to things that are impossible to do: water with weeds waving in the depths. Apart from painting and gardening, I am good for nothing. My greatest masterpiece is my garden." These works have become among his most recognizable ones, and The White Lilies painting was the first, and along with its close version at the Musee d'Orsay, the most famous. The White Water Lilies in 1900 was acquired by Sergei Shchukin, a Russian businessman who, like Alfred Barnes in the United States, became an art collector, mainly of French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. He bought his first Monet in 1897. In time there were 258 paintings decorating the walls of his palatial home in Mo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Dreyfus]
1899 These pieces are drawn from the archives of the British illustrated journals the Graphic and the Daily Graphic and relate to the period of the retrial of Capt. Drefus at Rennes in 1899. There are seven pieces in various sizes in very good condition: five pen and ink, one pencil drawing, and one water colour en grisailles. Chronologically the first piece is a grisaille water colour, 7½" x 11", for use in the Graphic, the weekly publication, where the illustrations were chiefly half-tone. It shows the scene on the deck of the Sfax, the ship which carried Dreyfus from Devil's Island, as they waited for the arrival of the despatch boat, Caudin, to take him ashore. The printed picture caption of the magazine is attached at the bottom edge showing that it was drawn by J. Nash R.I. from an original sketch by "our Special Artist" Henri Lanos. There is a date stamp on the back which shows that it was received on the 15th July, 1899. Dreyfus arrived back in France on the night of the 30th June-1st July. Next are two original court-room sketches by George Redon, a French illustrator/artist, presumably acting as the Graphic's court-room reporter. One, a pencil sketch, 12" x 8", intialled G.R., with the date of 8th September 1899 verso has the caption, "General Roget interrupts M. Trarieux." The face and upper part of the body are quite well finished, the rest less so. It is very much an on-the-spot sketch and would possibly have been intended to be "finished" by one of the artists working in the magazine's studio. However, on the back is the pencilled inscription "D[aily] G[raphic … [Click Below for Full Description]

manuscript album, scrapbook]; Turner, Elsie Nora
Leicester, Devon, et al: , 1899-1909. Leicester, Devon, et al, 1899-1909. Hardcover. Near Fine. Full leather (7-by-9 inches), all edges gilt, in hand-made cloth cover with calligraphic initials and floral motif embroidered on front cover; approx. pp. 200, different color papers, more than half full with autographs, prose, poems, and original artwork by numerous contributors. Cloth cover sunned along spine and edges, otherwise fine. A lovely volume. By turns funny and touching, this album compiled by Miss Elsie Nora Turner (who becomes a Mrs. along the way) includes original pen and ink drawings, watercolors, gouache, two sepia photographs (one including a very early image of a car), and 6 pages of autographs (including one with the heading, "My Wedding Day / June 9, 1909..." that is signed by her 4 bridesmaids). The artwork, contributed by friends and family, is invariably adept, ranging from the formal landscape, still life, or portrait, to cartoons (a cat caught in a goldfish bowl, a flamingo at battle with a frog, a man with wings abuzz in a field of lady flowers) -- it is sometimes direct on the page, other times tipped into corner slots (and so removable). A drawing of a bridge blown up by the Boers in 1900 is amongst the artwork. Some contribute poetry, including one in defense of women, and another quotes Longfellow's "Hiawatha." The numerous autographs she collects locate most of her friends and family spread throughout England. Interestingly, we know that Miss Turner was married in 1909. There are no entries dated later than 1909, but there is a "Baby's C … [Click Below for Full Description]

MASSENET, Jules 1842-1912
Folio (350 x 270 mm). Modern maroon morocco with marbled boards. 4 pp., notated in ink on 20-stave music paper with blindstamp of H. Lard-Esnault Ed. Bellamy sr, Paris on one side of the leaf only.A fair copy of a piano reduction of "Les Mandores" in A major, 3/4 time. Tempo: "Assez Modéré (sans lenteur)"; metronome mark: "120 = [quarter note]." Autograph note to upper left corner of p. 1: "3ème entrée." Several erasures. Cautionary key and time signature for continuation after final double bar (D minor, 12/8 time).System breaks and pagination marked up in pencil in an unknown hand, both matching pp. 172-75 of the first edition of the piano-vocal score published in Paris by Heugel in 1899. The markup, as well as the cautionary key and time signatures at the end, allow for the conclusion that the present copy is part of the engraver's copy of the opera. All leaves guarded and with early horizontal crease; slightly browned; small stain to final blank page. In very good condition overall. "Les Mandores" is part of an extended ballet divertissement in the second act of Massenet's opera Cendrillon. It is not included in Massenet's original manuscript piano-vocal score, dated 1895 (Bibliothèque nationale de France, département Bibliothèque-musée de l'opéra, RES-563); there, the "2ème entrée" of the divertissement ("Le Fiancés") is immediately followed by "Le Rigodon du Roy," counted as "3ème entrée." In the first edition "Les Mandores" appears as the "3ème entrée" (pp. 172-75) and another new movement, "La Florentine," as the "4-ème entrée" (pp. 176-79); the "Rigodon du Roy" is re … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elderkin, James
Detroit, 1899. [4],202pp. plus frontispiece portrait and three plates. Half morocco and pictorial boards. Boards lightly worn and faded, some scuffing, corners worn. Internally clean. About very good. Autobiography of a career soldier, spanning the 19th century. "The Florida, the Mexican War and the Great Rebellion, together with sketches of travel, also of service in a militia company and a member of the Detroit Light Guard Band for over thirty years." Elderkin joined the army in 1839 at the age of nineteen and was first stationed in Indian Territory for two years before going to Florida in 1841. He gives a vivid account of the brutal combat of the Second Seminole War, where he spent several "dark and terrible" years. In 1842 he was transferred to Jefferson Barracks (now Kansas City). He went to the Texas frontier with Taylor in 1846 and was present at Palo Alto, Churubusco, and minor conflicts in between, followed by the taking of Mexico City. In 1852 he was transferred to California, where he was under the command of U.S. Grant for a time. In 1854 he left the Army and lived as a miner and musician in California in 1857 before moving to Detroit. In 1861, Elderkin reenlisted and took part in all of the Peninsular Campaign in 1862, of which he gives a vigorous account. He left the army when his one-year enlistment was up (he was then forty-two) and returned to Detroit, where he remained for the rest of his life. An interesting western narrative.
