Edition originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

Hugo Alesi
1899. Height 40" x Width 30" Romanian-born Hugo d'Alési (1849-1906) was one of the earliest artists to design posters for the French railway companies. They were printed using a process similar to chromolithography, called simile-aquarelle ("faux watercolor,") that required up to 20 different colors to render the final image, making them much more richly printed, detailed and painterly than the travel posters from subsequent decades. By some accounts, he designed "hundreds for the railway companies" (Hillion p. 278). It was such an expensive process that it drove the artist into bankruptcy shortly before his premature death. D'Alési's posters caught the eye of many in France and around the world, including Paul Cézanne, who commented, "I should like to do decorative landscapes like Hugo d'Alési, yes, with my small sensibility" (Cezanne p. 232). This tranquil, twilight scene from the Grand Canal is one of only seven travel posters chosen to be included in the Maitres de l'Affiche series. Maitres pl. 171 (var), Manifesta 84, La Mer p. 50 (var). (credit to Swann Galleries) This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Bel exemplaire broché, tel que paru, non coupé. Rare. [Click Below for Full Description]

MALLARMÉ Les Poésies Bruxelles, Deman 1899 Un volume in-4 de 1 f. blanc, frontispice de Félicien Rops, 133 pp., 5 ff. n. ch. Aucune rousseur.

London: ?, 1899. Bad condition with cover broken off, no back cover, malformed, breaking spine, rough corners, creases and wrinkles, full of handwriting in pen, etc. It should be conserved at least in terms of the binding and cover needing to be reattached. Sold "As Is" / "For Parts / Not Working", etc. -- I offer no refunds on this item -- once you buy it, it's yours to keep. Item: 1899 Christie, Manson & Woods auction catalog for the sale of "The Marlborough Gems", the most important of all 18th century English collections. This is an annotated catalog, having the prices realized and buyer's names written in, in ink, at the time. There is a similar example that you can view every page of, online (University of Oxford, Classical Art Research Centre), but that one is apparently copyrighted. The catalogue offered here contains different information than their copy. All I had to do was look at the page numbered 2 (that's as far as I needed to go), and I noticed that lot 6 went to Lane according to my catalog, but it went to Kelekian according to their catalog. Their catalog looks strange (with lots of red lines and red writing as well as black ink) and mine doesn't. I went to Oxford, so I don't want to say too much more about whatever they have there. It would be too easy for someone to buy this item, photocopy it for the valuable information and then return it. I refuse to refund anyone after purchasing this item, ok? It needs to go to someone who will appreciate it and want to keep it, like the Getty, Oxford, Blenheim Palace, or any current owner of any Marlborough Gem. P … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Moby Dick or The Whale" by Herman Melville. First Scribner's edition, published in 1899. The true first edition was published by Harper and Brothers in 1851. Illustrated by I. W. Taber. Measures 4.75" x 7.5", 492 pages with additional 14 pages of Extracts. Bound in publisher's original green cloth with a seahorse motif. The book is in good minus condition. White staining to the right edge of the front board. Both hinges are cracked, the rear hinge nearly separated. Gilt lettering on the spine faded but legible. Front endpaper and half title page nearly detached. Moisture damage on the bottom edge of the first few pages until the title page, at which point it mysteriously disappears, perhaps a small drink spill. Nonetheless a scarce early printing of Melville's classic, difficult to find a copy from the 1800s. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. We are always interested in purchasing individual or collections of fine books. Inventory # (J3-9).

Hi, This lot is an 1899 Original Hardback Wisden. In Superb condition The first Hardback that Wisden produced was in 1896, this is the fourth year of the hardback and an extremely hard copy to find, especially in this condition. Since 2006 I have seen 6 for sale and one of those was without a plate. The front board is very clean with excellent gilt, the rear board is pretty much mark free and the spint gilt is very bright. There is a very outside chance that the 18 of 1899 has been regilded on the spine but I may be being paranoid. The hinges are very strong and the yellow pastedowns in top condition, two small nicks to the front right. The photoplare is very good and internaly a nice clean book. As good as mine on my shelf. A rare Wisden in superb condition and a very nice price.

Rhodes, 2 volumes, 1st edition, 1st impression, Longmans, Green, & Co., 1899, second state, with the missing inverted comma inserted after the word 'Gazette' on page 459 of volume 2, 7 photogravure portraits (including frontispieces), 24 maps (20 folding), illustrations in the text, occasional light spotting, armorial book ticket of J.H. Beazley to front pastedowns) blue cloth gilt, slightly rubbed and slight damp marking to upper cover of volume 2, 8vo (Qty: 2) Notes: Provenance: J.H. Beazley was the son of James Beazley, founder of the Royal Liverpool Seamen's Orphan Institution. Woods A2(a). The original bindings were dark blue-green cloth stamped gilt on spine and front cover with pictorial design. The bindings here appear integral to the original publication but have no gilt stamping to the upper covers, no pictorial motifs or publisher's imprint to spines. Churchill's second book, preceded only by The Story of the Malakand Field Force (1898), "2000 copies published on 6 November 1899" (Woods). It includes, of course, his account of the charge of the 21st Lancers, to whom he was attached, at Omdurman on 2 September 1898, described by the Dictionary of National Biography as "that last cavalry charge of the dying century". DNB also considers The River War a "superb" history; whilst Churchill himself more graphically called it "a tale of blood and war". [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Bunyan, John ( T. E. Lawrence copy)
London: Essex House Press, 1899. This is without doubt T.E. Lawrence's own copy, number 407 of an edition of 750 copies. It is recorded in "T.E. Lawrence by His Friends" that this numbered copy was in the Clouds Hill Library of T.E. Lawrence. In "Friends, Vyvyan Richards records that; "He had a very good collection of the best hand-press books, from Kelmscott to Ashendene, and also a number of finely tooled bindings in which he rejoiced. In fact in order to decide on the type to be used in printing his own book, (Seven Pilliars, 1926) we gathered these hand-printed books in his room at All Souls College, and strewed them open over tables and chairs so that we could walk round and compare them. We chose independently and without discussion, and it was a satisfaction that we both wanted the same - the beautiful little Bunyan of C.R. Ashbee, a Caslon fount. This face has preserved its tradition so well that I do not think it was necessary to have special dies cut for the matrix of the monotype caster". Here is that very volume! This is the third book from the Essex House Press while it was printing in East London. The Press had been founded by Laurence Hodson and C.R. Ashbee "in the hope to keep living the traditions of good printing that William Morris had revived". They used two compositers and a pressman straight from Kelmscott. So here is a thrilling little book with a wonderful provenance.. Private Press Edition. Vellum. Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Private Press.

Boston: Hardy, Pratt & Co, 1899. First English language edition. Near Fine. Limited edition of 50 copies printed on Japanese vellum and signed by the publisher, of which this is number 42. Measuring 216 x 292mm. Half crushed red morocco over marbled boards, with five raised bands and gilt to spines. All edges brightly gilt. Marbled end papers. In all, a pleasing and uncommon edition celebrating the cultural contributions of one of the true Renaissance Men. "There is no name more illustrious in the annals of art and science than that of Leonardo da Vinci." And yet, as Muntz notes in his preface, his own work is the first biography to attempt to reproduce, classify, and examine the breadth of da Vinci's work across these fields. To that effect, the present volumes reproduce for the first time a number of the thinker's scientific, literary, and artistic manuscripts; and it provides at the end of volume II a lengthy and detailed catalogue of his works. Yet Muntz also admits that his project is more than intellectual. It is deeply personal as well. For through the examination of da Vinci's works, he aims "to penetrate more profoundly than my predecessors into the inner life of my hero." The result is a large and beautiful work dedicated to the wide-ranging and long-lasting contributions of one … [Click Below for Full Description]
