The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study, together with A Special Report on Domestic Service by Isabel Eaton, A.M.

University of Pennsylvania 1899 - 1st edition. Rebound in modern cloth. Good binding and cover. 520 p., 1 folded plan : figures and illustrations; 26 cm. Lacks the large color folding map of the 7th ward. Blind stamp on fep. Pencil underlining to a few pages. The Philadelphia Negro -- Appendixes: A. Schedules used in the house-to-house inquiry. B. Legislation, etc., of Pennsylvania in regard to the Negro. C. Bibliography -- Special report on Negro domestic service in the seventh ward, Philadelphia / by Isabel Eaton. Refs: Partington 2126; Hampton Catalogue 4082. The Philadelphia Negro analyzed the economic and social conditions of African American in Philadelphia in the historically black 7th ward neighborhood. Du Bois work is notable as the first case study of a black community in the United States and one of the earliest examples of statistically based social science. "What made Du Bois's study remarkable in its day was its rejection of prevailing assumptions of inherent racial differences, thus bearing on issues much wider than those indicated by its title. It is also notable as a thoroughly modern piece of social research. The problems faced by Philadelphia's blacks, he argued, had nothing to do with their supposed racial proclivities, but derived from the way they had been treated in the past and their relegation in the present to the most menial and lowest-paying jobs." - Times Literary Supplement. Presentation copy, given to the Philadelphia historian and author, Dennis J. Clark. Eight members of the Fel's board have signed a mounted presentation card. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1852-1870. Mining and Hunting in the Far West

[J.S. Stewart, Printer and Bookbinder, Middletown, Conn, Stevenson, Conn 1899 - First edition. Frontispiece portrait. 41 pp. 1 vols. Large 8vo. A Western Hunting Rarity. A rare work, privately printed, listed by Eberstadt in 1953 at $300. "Isbell went to California as a young man by way of Cape Horn in 1852 and from that time until 1870, except for two trips back to his home in Connecticut, he hunted or worked in the mines of California and Idaho. He learned fairly soon that hunting could often be more profitable than working as a miner, though in the end he seems to have accumulated quite a stake from mining. He tells some great hunting stories and his account of life in Idaho, where he went after hearing about the gold discoveries there in 1862 is most interesting" - Streeter. "One of the more sought of western narratives" - Eberstadt. Howes I 87 "b" (G NYP Y); Eberstadt 132:361; Graff 2162; Streeter 4118; Kurutz 355a. Not in Heller or Phillips or Cowan Brown boards gilt.         Resolution of the House of Lords and the House of Commons thanking Kitchener of Khartoum for the successful Nile Campaign.

1899 - 2 volumes, Folio(44 x 35 cm), each consisting of 2 leaves, printed entirely on vellum within fancy gilt borders, each with respective coat-of-arms to head, original red (and green) straight-grained morocco gilt, both volumes signed by the respective Clerks to the House, with a hand-written letter from Lord Kitchener to Colonel Long. Printed entirely on vellum and bound in the finest morocco, a magnificent tribute to the participants in the capture of Khartoum. The officially printed resolutions by both Houses of Parliament thanking Major General Lord Kitchener of Khartoum and other leading participants in the Nile Campaign of 1896-7-8. The present example is that presented to Colonel Long and includes a hand-written letter form Kitchener to Colonel Long dated 17th July 1899, notifying Long of the vote of thanks and also personally thanking Long for his "indefatigable work". Also with a handwritten letter from Henry Graham, Clerk to the House of Lords, dated 10th August 1899, sending the "authenticated transcript on vellum of the Resolutions of the House of Lords on the 8th June last, placed in an appropriate cover". In 1898, at Omdurman an army commanded by the British General Sir Herbert Kitchener defeated the army of Abdullah al-Taashi, the successor to the self-proclaimed Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad. This was the culmination of the Egyptian Campaign undertaken by Kitchener to reclaim the Sudan and to gain revenge for the death of General Gordon in 1884. Colonel Long was later responsible for the most Victoria Crosses (seven) won during a single action in the Boer War at Colenso in 1899. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Tokyo Fuzoku Shi (Fuzokushi). [ ]. ["Chronicles of Tokyo Manners and Customs"].

Tokyo: Fuzanbou (Fuzanbo), 1899-1902 (Meiji 35). First Edition. Original wrappers. Very good antiquarian condition. 3 vols., 8vo. COMPLETE SET. [1. Jokan, 1899: ] + [2. Chukan, 1900: ] + [3. Gekan, 1902: ]. 178 +168 + 204, 45 pp. Illustrated throughout with high-quality woodblocks, and also containing two KUCHIE woodblock prints (see below). Original Fukuro toji binding: color printed wrappers as issued, paper labels. Some wear and soiling (covers of Vol. 2 are quite soiled). Preserved in a fine protective case. Hirade's work on Tokyo customs, manners, and everyday life, is of the greatest importance to sociologists and urban historians of the Meiji era, still unsurpassed. The "Tokyo Fuzokushi" offers painstaking research and first-hand observations of Japan's greatest city at the dawn of the Industrial Age. Here the Tokyo experience is well illustrated and described topographically. In his erudite narrative, Hirade shares his wonder of the changes of Tokyo's physical and human landscape. These three volumes are tantamount to an ethnographic encyclopedia of Tokyo, describing the customs of Tokyo society, ranging from the poor and pitiful to the wealthy and powerful. It is a remarkable fact that even the most "unremarkable" details of life in Tokyo were not excluded. To take just one example: Hirade informs us that all aspects of funeral pageantry, from mourning clothes to artificial flowers and cages of birds for release, were available for hire. Naturally, the funeral arrangements were customized according to the social class of the decedent and survivor(s). For instance, a large and expensive bier (koshi) could be rented by upper-class mourners; it featured a miniature shrine carried on top of two parallel poles, and necessitated the employment of several footman. These koshi were used to carry high-quality horizontal coffins. By contrast, a kago bier (rented by middle-class mourners) required only two men to carry it, and were utilized to carry less expensive upright coffins. Hirade does not fail to add that the very poor squeezed the dead into what amounted to crude barrels (hayaoke), merely lashing the barrels to poles for transport on the shoulders of relatives or friends. Finally, Hirade goes on to describe a general shift in Tokyo from upright coffins to horizontal ones. Hirade observes changes in the traditions of escaping the summer heat: we learn that the hiring of boats on the Sumida River was on the wane; members of the leisure class were now boarding trains for leaure places elsewhere, even as far away as the mountains of Nikko and Chuzenjii. Hirade adds that, as a result, the restaurants along the Sumida riverbanks were experiencing a significant decrease in the summer trade of former days. It is not lost on Hirade that this account exemplifies economic and cultural tension in the transition between pastoral and industrial Tokyo. Other topics include (but are by no means limited to) descriptions of neighborhood youth activities in Tokyo; problems of juvenile delinquency, "modern" Tokyo cuisine and fine dining; theater and public ceremonies; Tokyo's neighborhood landlords; their responsibilities for the physical upkeep of neighborhood watch stations, and for the collection of funds used for festivals and other local activities; folklore of Tokyo residents; the notorious conditions of neighborhood streets (described locally as "mud soil"); and much more. The depth and richness in Hirade Kojiro's gazetteer is considerable. For instance, the chronicler provides graphic details of the lively Asakusa neighborhood before it was obliterated by the catastrophic 1923 Kanto Earthquake (the loss of life has been estimated in the six figures). But for the present Chronicle we would have little way of knowing that in 1902 Asakusa Park was elbow to chin with freak shows, clockwork automata, hydraulic automata, bawdy renditions of classics in loyalty and filial piety, figurative tableaux in bamboo basketry and dried kelp, raconteurs, thugs, and whores. In Vol. III, Hirade Kojiro reports the following in the area: "ball riders, acrobats and cage escapers, living dolls, hand dancing, sword dancing, foot tricks (like shooting arrows and writing calligraphy), comic kyogen, strongmen, sumo wrestling, top spinners, marionettes, moving pictures, dog theatre, monkey theatre, sparrow tricks," and also exotic beasts like "tigers, leopards, elephants, crocodiles, and serpents." By September 5th, 1923, all of the above were gone. The "Tokyo Fuzokushi" is justly considered to be an essential historical record of life in Tokyo during the early Meiji Period. The importance and rarity of this first edition is attested by the 1983 reprint of it (T ky : Nihon Tosho Sent , Sh wa 58); unfortunately the resolution of the reprint is extremely poor. Of the original edition, ours appears to be the only copy on the market, complete or otherwise.

1899. Folio. 4 pp. on bifolium. Self-reflexive notations in the manner of a diary: "[...]

The Song of the Wise Oleg. Original Russian - "K stoli?etii?u so dni?a rozhdenii?a Pushkina, 26 Mai?a 1899 goda - on the title page.

Small folio 13 x 9 inches. 6 folding pages. Text printed in Russian. One side printed as front and rear covers. The other side, forming the interior comprising 6 leaves of superb chromolitho colour printing of Vasiliy Vasnetsov's paintings. During the last 20 years of his life Vasnetsov turned to his favorite lyrical subjects inspired by Russian fairy-tales. His painting influenced greatly the development of modernism and symbolism in Russian painting and poetry. Pushkin's poem "The Song of Oleg the Wise" is well known in Russia. Oleg comes upon a soothsayer who predicts that his horse will cause his death; in consequence the Prince hands over the beast to retainers so that he should never set eyes on it again. Some years later he hears of its death, and, pouring scorn on soothsayers, goes to visit its remains. As he stands by the skeleton a poisonous snake issues from the skull, dealing him a fatal bite and thus fulfilling the prophecy.         The New Metropolis: 1600--Memorable Events of Three Centuries--1900. From the Island of Mana-Hat-Ta to Greater New York at the Close of the Nineteenth Century. Illustrated with One Thousand Engravings.

New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1899. First edition. Blindstamped Cloth. Very Good. xxii, 639, [32] pp. 4to oblong, 10 by 13 inches. Profusely illustrated, photographs, drawings, maps, with some color. One of the most satisfying and entertaining of New York-related books that covers the entire landscape -- history, culture, architecture, its society, high and low -- shortly after the formation of the city as we now know it, with the merger of the five boroughs just one year before publication, in 1898. This book was issued to celebrate that event, but it is far, far more than a souvenir. In its comprehensiveness and authoritativeness, it remains a highly usable fount of information about aspects of the city both then and at times, surprisingly, today. There are probably no other books that alone can transport one back to the turn of the twentieth century in Gotham as seamlessly as this work, and its achievement literally towers over the vast literature about the city that has accumulated ever since. The cloth has minor soiling and edgewear. The interior is clean and tight -- remarkably so, given the weight of the oblong work. Light wear and a few rubbed spots with faded color on the cloth boards. A tipped in newspaper piece from 1933 on rear FEP. A short closed tear by hinge on FFEP. Overall a handsome, solid copy.

Smith, Elder & Co, 1899-01-01. Hardcover. Good. 2 volumes bound as one. 2nd edition, with supplement. 45 plates, many in color. Folio. Hardcover. Fine binding. Bound in modern leather, with gilt stamping, a lovely book. Embossed library stamp on title. Pages are clean and white. Armstrong a notable inventor. He gifted his gun patents to the British government and, as a result, was the first engineer and scientist to join the House of Lords. Armstrong was notable for his early proposals for renewable energy. He advocated for hydroelectric, wind, and solar power in the 19th century. In 1863 he predicted that 'England will cease to be a coal producing country...within 200 years.' His house, Cragside in Northumberland, was the first house to be powered by hydroelectric power. He calculated that "the solar heat operating on one acre [4047m2] in the tropics would ... exert the amazing power of 4000 horses acting for nearly nine hours every day' speculating that the 'direct heating action of the sun's rays' might be used 'in complete substitution for a steam engine.' See Higgins, Polly. "The origins of Hydroelectricity". The Ecologist, 2009. Also included are two reprinted reviews from Spectator from June 19, 1897 and Athenaeum in 1898 reviewing this book and discussing Armstrong's Theory of Matter. The significance of Armstong's work is more one of scientific beauty in their representation of electricity than a groundbreaking discovery. Subjects: Electric waves. Atmospheric electricity. Water -- Electrolysis. This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.

Collection of rock specimens from the Holy Land. [Palestine, no date, but late 18th or early 19th century].

1899. Two olive wood boxes with hinged lid and sliding inside cover, each with 15 compartments within. Ca 10 x 5 x 3 cm each, lids and sides prettily inlaid with mother-of-pearl designs. List of contents (handwritten and printed) to lid interior. A set of two wooden souvenir reliquaries containing specimens of rock fragments collected on various historical sites of the Holy Land, each specimen in its own compartment, the label inside the lid identifiying the locality from where each piece was taken. Among these hallowed spots are the place where the Blessed Virgin Mary was concealed at Bethlehem ("ubi latuit B.V.M. in Betlem"), the house of Zacchaeus the tax collector ("De Domo Zachei"), the place where Christ stood when he announced the last judgment ("ubi predixit iudicium"), where the Blessed Virgin died ("ubi obiit B.V.M."), etc. While one of the labels inside the reliquaries' lid is printed (apparently from a woodblock, in rough characters), the other is hand-lettered; both labels would seem to betray the artisans' comparative unfamiliarity with the Latin alphabet. Inserted in the latter reliquary is a folded octavo leaf of paper with a German translation of all the captions ("Erklärung dieser H.

The River War, An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing of Churchill's second published work, a superior set for discerning collectors, unrestored in the original bindings. Published in two massive volumes in 1899, the first edition of this book is compelling in every respect. First, of course, is the inherent merit of the work itself. The text is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. Mohammed Ahmed was a messianic Islamic leader in central and northern Sudan in the final decades of the 19th century. In 1883 the Mahdists overwhelmed the Egyptian army of British commander William Hicks, and Great Britain ordered the withdrawal of all Egyptian troops and officials from the Sudan. In 1885, General Gordon famously lost his life in a doomed defense of the capitol, Khartoum, where he had been sent to lead evacuation of Egyptian forces. Though the Mahdi died in 1895, his theocracy continued until 1898, when General Kitchener reoccupied the Sudan. With Kitchener was a very young Winston Churchill, who participated in the decisive defeat of the Mahdist forces at the battle of Omdurman in September 1898. In this book about the British campaign in the Sudan, Churchill - a young officer in a colonial British army - is unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of Imperial cynicism and cruelty. This work offers us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century from the distinctly 19th century battlefields where Churchill learned to write and earned his early fame. Here is a chief architect of the Second World War involved in what has been called the last "genuine" cavalry charge of the British army. In addition to being a compelling piece of writing, the first edition of The River War is also beautiful, rare, and bibliographically important. Aesthetically it is lavish and striking; the large, weighty volumes are beautifully decorated with gilt representations of the Mahdi's tomb on the spines and a gunboat on the front covers. Each of the two large volumes is printed on heavy paper with a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans. From a collector's standpoint it is scarce. There were only 2,000 copies of this beautiful first edition, first printing. Moreover, this is one of the few Churchill books for which there was no concurrent U.S. first edition. Bibliographically it is notable that the first edition is the only unabridged edition to this day. In 1902 Churchill (then a new Member of Parliament) revised and abridged his text, excising much of his criticism of Kitchener for political reasons.  All of the many subsequent editions of The River War are based on this 1902 abridged and revised text. This first edition, first printing set approaches near fine condition, original and unrestored. The illustrated cloth bindings remain square and tight, notably without the gutter breaks or text block looseness endemic to the edition. The bindings are unusually bright, with strong, unfaded color that shows no discernible disparity in brightness between the covers and spine. We note only trivial wear to extremities, a few tiny scuffs, and an unobtrusive .25 inch blemish to the lower left corner of the Mahdi?s tomb gilt on the Volume II spine. The contents remain bright, with moderate spotting intermittent throughout, though substantially confined to page edges, prelims, and blank inner margins. The original black endpapers are intact, as are all of the extensive maps and plans, as well as the frontispiece portraits with their original tissue guards. Apart from spotting, the page edges are impressively bright and clean for the edition. We find no previous ownership inscriptions or bookplates. Per Cohen, first printing, second state, is confirmed by the second quotation mark on p.459 of Vol. II. Each volume is protected with removable, clear mylar and housed in its own blue cloth slipcase. In 188 he was made head architect of the Cairo "Comité de conservation des monuments de l'art arabe" and head conservator of Arabic monuments at the Egyptian ministry for religious foundations (waqf).
