Tales from Shakespeare. Introductory preface by Andrew Lang.

London: S. T. Freemantle, 1899 - Octavo. Publisher's deluxe full vellum, titles and illustration gilt to spine and front, top edge gilt. A few minor spots to vellum, front board only very slightly bowed, spotting to edges and some light spotting within, but a sound and attractive copy in very good condition. Illustrated frontispice, title page, and plates by Robert Anning Bell. First Bell-illustrated edition, rare deluxe issue, of the Lambs' Tales of Shakespeare. Charles & Mary Lamb's Tales of Shakespeare done for children was first published in 1807. This is the first edition with the illustrations of prominent Arts & Crafts figure Robert Anning Bell (1863-1933), and is quite scarce in itself; the deluxe issue in gilt-decorated full vellum, however, is rare. We can only trace one copy as ever having appeared at auction. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Ballad of Reading Gaol. By C. 3.3. [Oscar Wilde].

Later Edition of the First Edition [7th printing of June 1899]. 8. 31 pages. Original Hardcover (Quarter vellum with mustard boards). Unusually excellent condition with only very minor signs of external wear. Interior also in marvellous condition. Exlbiris / Bookplate of film critic Leonie Graetz (Exlibris was made by the artist Hermann Westphal) to the front pastedown. Very Rare in this condition ! The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a poem by Oscar Wilde, written in exile either in Berneval-le-Grand or in Dieppe, France, after his release from Reading Gaol (pronounced "redding jail") on 19 May 1897. Wilde had been incarcerated in Reading, after being convicted of homosexual offences in 1895 and sentenced to two years' hard labour in prison. During his imprisonment, on Tuesday, 7 July 1896, a hanging took place. Charles Thomas Wooldridge had been a trooper in the Royal Horse Guards. He was convicted of cutting the throat of his wife, Laura Ellen, earlier that year at Clewer, near Windsor. He was aged only 30 when executed. Wilde spent mid-1897 with Robert Ross in Berneval-le-Grand, where he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol. The poem narrates the execution of Wooldridge it moves from an objective story-telling to symbolic identification with the prisoners as a whole. No attempt is made to assess the justice of the laws which convicted them, but rather the poem highlights the brutalisation of the punishment that all convicts share. Wilde juxtaposes the executed man and himself with the line "Yet each man kills the thing he loves". Wilde too was separated from his wife and sons. He adopted the proletarian ballad form, and suggested it be published in Reynold's Magazine, "because it circulates widely among the criminal classes to which I now belong for once I will be read by my peers a new experience for me". The finished poem was published by Leonard Smithers on February 13, 1898 under the name C.3.3., which stood for cell block C, landing 3, cell 3. This ensured that Wilde's name by then notorious did not appear on the poem's front cover. It was not commonly known, until the 7th printing in June 1899, that C.3.3. was actually Wilde. The first edition, of 800 copies, sold out within a week, and Smithers announced that a second edition would be ready within another week that was printed on February 24th, in 1000 copies, which also sold well. A third edition, of 99 numbered copies "signed by the author" was printed on March 4th, on the same day a fourth edition of 1200 ordinary copies was printed. A fifth edition of a 1000 copies was printed on March 17th, and a sixth edition was printed in 1000 copies on May 21st, 1898. So far the book's title page had identified the author only as C.3.3., although many reviewers, and of course those who bought the numbered and autographed third edition copies, knew that Wilde was the author, but the seventh edition, printed on June 23, 1899 actually revealed the author's identity, putting the name Oscar Wilde, in square brackets, below the C.3.3.. It brought him a small income in his remaining lifetime. The poem consists of 109 stanzas of 6 lines, of 8-6-8-6-8-6 syllables, and rhyming a-b-c-b-d-b. Some stanzas incorporate rhymes within some of all of the 8-syllable lines. The whole poem is grouped into 6 untitled sections of 16, 13, 37, 23, 17 & 3 stanzas. A version with only 63 of the stanzas, divided into 4 sections of 15, 7, 22 & 19 stanzas, and allegedly based on the original draft, was included in the posthumous editions of Wilde's poetry edited by Robert Ross, "for the benefit of reciters and their audiences who have found the entire poem too long for declamation".

- Selten!

Lettera autografa firmata a Domenico Lanza.

The Importance of Being Earnest.

London: Leonard Smithers and Co,, 1899. A Trivial Comedy for Serious People by the Author of Lady Windermere's Fan. Square octavo. Original pale purple cloth, gilt lettered spine, gilt floral motifs from designs by Charles Shannon on spine and covers, edges untrimmed, pages uncut. Housed in a custom black quarter morocco and cloth solander box. Spine slightly faded, faint water mark and a little bubbling of cloth to front cover, some slight wear to tips, internally fresh. An excellent copy. First edition, signed limited issue, number 87 of 100 large paper copies signed by the author. This copy is from the library of Wilde's Swedish translator, Michael Gripenberg, with his bookplate to the front pastedown. The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde's last play, opened to great acclaim on Valentine's Day 1895 but was withdrawn after Wilde's failed libel suit against Lord Queensbury led to his arrest. The subsequent "utter social destruction of Wilde" (ODNB) meant that the play was not published in book form until February 1899, after Wilde's release from prison. Richard Ellmann comments that Smithers's handsome editions of Earnest and An Ideal Husband "brought Wilde a little money".

1899. 8vo. 4 pages on bifolium. To Charles Rowley: "[...] I am just finishing the next instalment of the Memoirs which has to be posted next Friday, for the States, - and every minute, even late at night, has to be given to it. Late with the MS., as always! And Sophie will not let herself be persuaded that she may go when I am working so hard as I am the last few days before posting the MS. But - will you be in London on Sunday? And if so - have you disposed of it already? If not, we should be delighted to have you with us for lunch at 1.30. There is a train which may bring you in good time. Think of it, dear friend, and if you can, we should be so pleased to have you in our cot and you would see all of us, including the little girl who every day grows to become a big girl [...]". - Small tear on fol. 2, otherwise in fine condition.
