        Wireless telegraphy

1899. Marconi, Guglielmo (1874-1937). Wireless telegraphy. In Journal of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, XXVIII, no. 139 (April 1899): 273-290. Discussions: 291-316. Whole volume. x, 694pp. Plates, folding tables, text illustrations. Errata slip inserted before p. 367. 206 x 133 mm. Modern half calf, marbled boards. Light toning, volume title a bit soiled, but very good. First Edition. Marconi's first paper on wireless telegraphy. "Marconi seems to have learned in 1894 of Hertz's laboratory experiments with electromagnetic waves. He was immediately curious as to how far the waves might travel, and began to experiment, with the assistance of Prof. A. Righi of Bologna. His initial apparatus resembled Hertz's in its use of a Ruhmkorff-coil spark gap oscillator and dipole antennas with parabolic reflectors, but it replaced Hertz's spark-ring detector with the coherer that had been employed earlier by Branly and Lodge. [Lodge was only able to transmit and receive over a distance of 150 yards.] Marconi quickly discovered that increased transmission distance could be obtained with larger antennas, and his first important invention was the use of sizable elevated antenna structures and ground connections at both transmitter and receiver, in place of Hertz's dipoles. With this change he achieved in 1895 a transmission distance of 1.5 miles (the length of the family estate), and at about the same time conceived of 'wireless telegraph' communication through keying the transmitter in telegraph code" (DSB). Marconi was the son of Giuseppe Marconi, a wealthy landowner, and his second wife, Annie Jameson, daughter of an Irish whiskey distiller. His education was private, and included special instruction in physics. When Marconi could not interest the Italian government in the potential of his work he moved to London where one of his Irish cousins, Henry Jameson Davis, helped him to prepare a patent application. Davis also arranged demonstrations of the wireless telegraph for government officials and in 1897 helped form and finance the Wireless Telegraph and Signal Co., Ltd. In 1900 this became Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co., Ltd. Due to the great interest in the above presentation, Marconi had to read the paper twice, and the journal records two sets of discussions. Within a year after this speech Marconi increased his signaling distance to 150 miles, and decided to attempt to transmit across the Atlantic. In 1901 Marconi succeeded in wireless transmission across the Atlantic. In 1909 he shared the Nobel Prize for physics with K. F. Braun. From Gutenberg to the Internet, reading 5.4. Origins of Cyberspace 174. Printing and the Mind of Man 382 cited Marconi's Provisonal Specification for his patent dated June 1896. Dibner, Heralds of Science, 72 cited Marconi's patent published in 1899.

A number of the spines are characteristically sun-faded to lighter brown, occasional rubbing to raised bands and toes of a few spines, but a very good or better set, with none of the deterioration to the joints so common to this binding. The esteemed "Autograph Edition," limited to 512 numbered sets, signed by Clemens in the first volume: "S.L. Clemens / (Mark Twain)." Eighteen of the plates are signed by their respective artist, including Peter Newell, A.B. Frost, Charles N. Flagg, E.W. Kemble, Karl Gerhardt, Dan Beard, et al. Charles Dudley Warner signed the limitation page to volume 10 (THE GILDED AGE), and Brander Matthews signed at the end of his critical essay in volume one, as usual. This edition was published as a subscription set in a hierarchy of bindings, and sets were occasionally customized for the purchaser by the inclusion of related manuscript leaves, letters and other inserts. Such is the case with this set, and it is accompanied by a two page a.l.s. from Walter Bliss, 23 December 1905, to the original owner, detailing the arrangements made for Christmas Day delivery, and pointing out the location of the extra material (volumes I, V, VI, IX and X), and mentioning some extra loose plates, which are no longer present. In volume one are inserted a) a one page a.l.s. from Clemens, Riverdale on Hudson, 5 March 1902, to "Dear Bliss," written prior to departure for travels and trying to settle some publishing matters pertaining to a deal with Colliers and cancellation of another option, signed "S.L. Clemens," ca. fifty words; and b) a leaf from the autograph manuscript of THE GILDED AGE, in Clemens' hand, numbered '22' at the top margin, and beginning ", on the railroad & the steamboat, & say 'this' one little spot shall not be touched - this hovel shall be sacred ...," ca. 125 words. Volume V contains an extra limitation leaf from the "Author's Signed Edition" of FOLLOWING THE EQUATOR, unnumbered, but signed both as Twain and as Clemens. Volume VI includes the facsimile printing of the letter by Clemens commenting on the frontis photogravure (the image of Clemens transposed into a horse and steer drawn cart) for that special edition. Volume XI includes a) another leaf from the manuscript of THE GILDED AGE in Clemens's hand, with corrections and revisions, ca 125 words, numbered '60' in the top margin, and beginning: "'But how should I know whether they were boys or girls?'," and b) a leaf from the manuscript in Warner's hand, numbered '820' in the upper margin, beginning: "'Daft is a little strong ..., " ca 150 words. Volume XI contains a third leaf in Clemens's hand from the manuscript of THE GILDED AGE, numbered '421' then altered to '1000' in the upper margin, heavily revised, with significant deletions and insertions, ca. 150 words. While sets with a single Clemens leaf (often coupled with a Warner leaf) from the manuscript of THE GILDED AGE are not uncommon, sets with multiple Clemens leaves are uncommon, and those with multiple leaves plus a letter are even more exceptional. Three of the late volumes coincided with the publication of their respective public trade editions. BAL 3456.

Chesapeake Bay, York River Hampton's Roads Chesapeake Entrance

Washington D.C.: Published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, Sept. 1899. Engraving. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of a large in filled tear in the upper margin. Another expertly mended tear on the bottom margin. Image size: 37 3/4 x 27 1/4 inches. 29 7/8 x 42 inches. A fascinating sea chart of the Chesapeake Bay, produced by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. In response to the growing need for accurate coastal charts of America, Thomas Jefferson signed a bill creating the United States Coast Survey. Founded in 1807, the agency was responsible for conducting detailed surveys of the coastal areas, which were then carefully recorded in large navigational charts. These charts included information on shoals, reefs, and other navigational hazards that plagued American vessels. Ferdinand Hassler, a young Swiss engineer, was selected to establish the new agency, but various obstacles meant that the actual surveying did not commence until 1816, when Hassler began work on New York Bay.Hassler was succeeded by Alexander Dallas Bache who dedicated himself to surveying the country's extended coastline. Under Bache the quality of the engraving and lettering in the charts achieved a high standard and the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey became a permanent, and heartily supported government function. The work of the Coast Survey not only resulted in the most accurate charts of America's coastal waters, but pioneered the techniques and equipment used by later surveyors in mapping the interior of the country. Conducted under S. Pritchett, who ran the Survey office for only three years before becoming president of M.I.T, this detailed chart covers the Chesapeake Bay including the York River, and the Hampton Roads waterway. Water depths and sand bars are all carefully recorded, as are the various lighthouses along the coastline. Tides, soundings and buoys are also noted as well as weather signal stations and life saving stations. This is an important sea chart of this area and wonderful example of the maps produced by the United States Coast Survey.

        Samlede Skrifter.

18 bind.

1899. Paperback. Acceptable. ANTIN, Mary. FROM PLOTZK TO BOSTON. With a Foreword by Israel ZANGWILL. Boston: W. B. Clarke & Co., 1899. First edition. 80 pp. 8vo., light reddish brown wrappers printed in black. Extremities of wrappers chipped, darkened. An acceptable copy of a fragile item. Included in the Masterworks of Modern Jewish Writing Series in 1986. This is a first edition of Antin's first book, a record of her voyage from her native Plotzk, White Russia, to America. Mary[ashe] Antin (1881-1949) spent her childhood in a small town in the pale. Like other immigrant children, in the days when grade levels were determined by competence in English rather than age, thirteen year old Antin squeezed herself into a desk meant for a kindergarten child. Her intelligence and evident literary gifts quickly impressed her teachers. Eager to demonstrate how much an immigrant child could accomplish in only four months, one of Antin's teachers sent her composition "Snow" to the periodical Primary Education. After seeing her name in print for the first time, Antin was determined to become a writer. She attended the Girl's Latin School of Boston, and later New York Teacher's College of Columbia University. Incredibly, FROM PLOTZK TO BOSTON was written when the author was only eleven years old! " was at that age that she first wrote the thing in Yiddish, though she was thirteen when she translated it into English" (Israel Zangwill, Foreword, p. 7). Antin's story bravely articulated the Jewish immigrant experience - "for, despite the noble spirit in which the Jews of America have grappled with the invasion, we still know too little of the feelings of the people themselves" (ibid). Thirteen years later, Antin would publish the work for which she would be best remembered, her autobiography entitled THE PROMISED LAND (UJE, Volume 1, 337). Jewish Women in America, Volume 1.
