An Charles Rowley unter anderem über seine Memoiren ("Memoirs of a revolutionist"): "[...] I am just finishing the next instalment of the Memoirs which has to be posted next Friday, for the States, - and every minute, even late at night, has to be given to it. Late with the MS., as always! And Sophie will not let herself be persuaded that she may go when I am working so hard as I am the last few days before posting the MS. But - will you be in London on Sunday? And if so - have you disposed of it already? If not, we should be delighted to have you with us for lunch at 1.30. There is a train which may bring you in good time. Think of it, dear friend, and if you can, we should be so pleased to have you in our cot and you would see all of us, including the little girl who every day grows to become a big girl [...]". - Bl. 2 mit einem kleinen Einriß am oberen Rand, sonst tadellos.

The Origin and Official History of the Thirteenth (13th) Battalion of Infantry and a Description of the Work of the Early Militia of the Niagara Peninsula in the War of 1812 and the Rebellion of 1837

Hamilton, Ontario: E.L. Ruddy, 1899. Hamilton, Ontario: E.L. Ruddy. Hardcover. 88 pages plus 40 pages of glorious vintage ads, primarily for businesses in Hamilton and vicinity - our two favourites being the full-page ad for Labatt's Ales and Porter, and the quarter-page ad for J. Hoodless & Son which features photos of John Hoodless and the late Jos. Hoodless. Neatly handwritten inscription dated Christmas 1899 indicates this copy was presented to Captain A.A. Booker 'With the compliments of Lieut-Colonel McLaren and Officers". Presumably A.A. Booker was a descendant of Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Booker who commanded the Battalion from 1865-1866 when it took part in the Battle of Ridgeway. A full-page photographic portrait of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry McLaren appears on page thirteen. Includes list of officers and the dates of the official gazettes concerning them, and a Record of Rifle Shooting from 1863 to 1899 inclusive. Printed upon coated stock. Marbled endpapers. Handsome bright gilt adornment and lettering upon front board. Usual library markings. Above-average external wear. Hinges and backstrip secured with tape. A worthy association copy of this important work. . Fair. 1899. First Edition.

DE STRIJD DER WERELDEN [Struggle of the Worlds]

Amsterdam: Cohen [1899]. - WELLS (H. G.): DE STRIJD DER WERELDEN [Struggle of the Worlds] translated by B Canter. Amsterdam: Cohen [1899]. Illustrated with 10 page designs by J H Speenhoff. Square 8vo, 287pp; publisher’s pictorial cloth. FIRST NEWLY-ILLUSTRATED EDITION. The story was originally serialized in nine issues of Pearson’s Magazine (1897/98) with pictures by Warwick Goble; these got reprinted in the first American book version (1898), but the original first edition (London 1898) is unillustrated as is also the 1899 second edition. This Dutch translation is thus the 1st illustrated book version. The artist Jacobus Hendrik Speenhoff (1869-1945) is known as a poet, singer and artist, a somewhat radical cabaret performer whose degenerate lyrics made him a pioneer legend. He created very few illustrated books or pictorial bindings. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Works of Edgar Allan PoeEdition de Luxe

sp;-Boston - Jefferson Press5vol.; 8.5 by 6; I: (iii)319pp., 337pp.;II: 320pp., 320pp.; III: 322pp., 319pp.; IV: 273pp., (iii)279pp.; V: (v)240pp., 215pp., 1899 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A late Victorian American collection of Poe's works in amateur quarter-calf. Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) is one of the most well-known writers of the macabre. An American Romantic, Poe is frequently regarded as the father of the detective mystery, and his name is synonymous with the bizarre and surreal. Poe wrote much of his famous Gothic fiction with the specific intentof appeasing contemporaneous popular taste; nevertheless, his dark romance provided a suitable counterpoint to the transcendentalist movement to which he was vehemently opposed. Surrealitywas (and remains) a theme of Poe's life story as well as his work;he marriedhis 13-year-old cousin in 1835, ten years before publishing his most famous work - the Raven. She died of illness two years thence; and Poe followed in a further two. His death remains unexplained, and is attributed variously to illness, substance abuse, suicide, and other more bizarre causes. Here we have a compendium of his work; in remarkably good condition, and replete with portrait and photographic plates. Complete in five volumes(paginated as nine; eight bound two abreast and one alone). Condition: In an amateur quarter-calf binding. Excellent with just minor shelfwear only. Blue cloth boards with black calf spines and contrasting lablels. Gilt top edges. Minimal wear to cornersand bottom edges of boards. Internally, very firmly bound (two front hinges slightlytender). Colouredfrontispieces and monochrome preliminary plates to each volume. Pages clean and bright, with only some very light spotting and handling marks to first and last few pages of each volume as to expected. Overall VERY GOOD.

        The Wind Among The Reeds

London: Elkin Mathews 1899 - First edition, first printing. Publisher's decorative dark blue cloth designed by Althea Gyles, with pictorial boards stamped in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, printed on laid paper. About fine, with light wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, light rubbing to the boards, former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, a hint of offsetting to the free endpapers, otherwise bright and fresh pages. Overall, a clean and pleasing copy. Wade 27. The Wind Among the Reeds is an early collection of romantic poetry, including "Into the Twilight," "The Cap and Bells," "And He Wishes for the Cloth of Heaven," and "To My Heart, Biding It Has No Fear," among others. While the initial publication was met with limited success, contemporary critics cite The Wind Among the Reeds as a grand achievement of Yeats' early poetry. Known for his use of symbolic imagery, Yeats evokes images of Celtic folklore and mythology in these early poems. Further solidifying the Irish and Celtic themes of the text is the binding, designed by Yeats' friend Althea Gyles, who was also Irish. Gyles designed the covers for Yeats' The Secret Rose (1897) and Poems (1904) as well. Althea Gyles (1868-1949) was an Irish artist, illustrator, and designer. In 1889, she moved from County Waterford to Dublin, where she studied art. During this time, she began a long-term friendship with William Butler Yeats, who she continued to associate with after moving to London in 1892. Although she began to write her own verse after moving to London, Gyles is best remembered for her illustrations and book cover designs for Yeats. In addition to her literary and artistic endeavors, Gyles was a member of the occult organization the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, whose paranormal interests inspired contemporary organizations such as Wicca and Thelema.         The River War, An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Near fine. This is a collector-grade copy of the first edition, first printing of Churchill's second book, his last to be published in England in the 19th Century. This first edition is notable for a number of reasons. First, aesthetically it is lavish and striking; the large, weighty volumes are beautifully decorated with gilt representations of the Mahdi's tomb on the spines and a gunboat on the front covers. Second, from a collector's standpoint it is scarce; the publisher released only 2,646 copies of this beautiful edition, and this number includes both second and third printings. Third, bibliographically it is notable that this first edition is the *only* unabridged edition printed to this day. In 1902 Churchill (then a new member of Parliament) revised and abridged his text, excising much of the criticism of Kitchener for political reasons. All of the many subsequent editions of The River War are based on this 1902 abridged and revised text. Last but not least, the text is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. As a young officer in a colonial British army, Churchill is unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of the British army. This work offers us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century from the distinctly 19th century battlefields where Churchill learned to write and earned his early fame. Here is a chief architect of the Second World War involved in what has been called by some the last "genuine" cavalry charge of the British army. This first edition is as important and desirable as any in the Churchill canon. Offered here is a collector-grade first printing set. The bindings of both volumes are unusually clean, with bright gilt, sharp corners, and only trivial shelf wear. Spine presentation is superior. Both volumes show some of the usual wrinkling at the spine ends, but both the color and gilt remain excellent. Unlike many copies, this set is entirely original, having suffered no restoration or repair. The contents of both volumes are truly noteworthy - unusually bright and clean, not just internally, but on the text block edges as well. The spotting endemic to this edition is absent here. Moreover, the contents remain tight in the bindings, with none of the typical splits or gutter breaks detected. The original black endpapers are present, as are all maps, plans, and illustrations, including the tissue guards at each frontispiece. The sole interior flaw detected is a 1.5 inch diameter brown stain on the tissue paper guard at the Volume II frontispiece. Both books have removable protective mylar covers.
