        Four Drawings, all signed

[Glasgow, ca. 1899?]. Various sizes (see below). Each en grisaille on Bristol board. . Parke was a noted animal painter and illustrator who was born in Scotland and trained at the Glasgow School of Art. He concentrated upon animal illustration, which he treated in a strong, bold manner derived from his love of Japanese prints. Parke was elected member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1899, the year of these pictures. He moved to New York in 1910 and died there The present group was done for the Magazine of the 1890, The Butterfly Magazine, in which he illustrated the story "The Child and the Cat", by Carton Moore and Hamish Wendy, the child befriending a large black cat and her kittens with her nursemaid in attendance The drawings are: 1) "We left her pussy by the fire quite happy with her little kittens beside her". 9-3/4 x 5-3/4 inches. Inscribed by the artist, signed and dated 1899. 2) Child talking to the black cat. 6-3/4 x 5-1/2 inches. Signed and dated 1899; inscribed and signed verso by the artist. 3) "Ran down the steps to the garden," 8 x 5 inches. Signed and dated 1900, further signed and inscribed on verso. 4) "When nurse came I said good night to dear pussy ... " 8 x 5-1/2 inches. Signed, inscribed, and dated 1899; further signed and dated verso

Electric Movement in Air and Water with Theoretical Inferences, 2 vols. (including supplement by Henry Stroud).

London : Smith, Elder, & Co., 1899. 2 volumes bound in together in original full decorated cloth, richly gilt, with gilt title and decorations. Complete copy with 1 diagram (loose), and 55 (41 + 14) photographic / lithographed plates, many full page, some large folding. The 14 plates included in the supplement are in color. Most plates loose but all are well preserved, clean and intact. Clean copy inside, and overall quite well preserved.. First printing of the spectacular second edition from 1899 which includes the supplement by Stroud with full page colored lithographed plates. William George Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Cragside, CB, FRS was an engineer, a scientist, inventor and philanthropist. In collaboration with the architect Richard Norman Shaw, he built Cragside in Northumberland, the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. He invented high-pressure hydraulic machinery and is regarded as the inventor of modern artillery. His electric experiments in this volume (s) were reproduced directly onto photographic plates, fx. some are made on plates with a very thin layer of wax and dust. What he captures this way is describes like this: "I have already spoken of electricity as organised motion, and we have here an example of it carried apparently to the verge of life. (No. 38) [...] in the succeeding figure (No. 40) we see arborescent forms, showing trees and undergrowth, in which stems, branches, and leaves find their approximate representatives. Lastly, in the one remaining figure to be shown (No. 41), even the root is indicated lying at the foot of the stem." And later on he concludes [p. 52]: "Examples have been presented of the remarkable correspondence between some electric figures and living organised forms." This copy stems from the collection of Danish physic P. O. Pedersen with his name, neatly, in ink to bottom of titlepage. P. O. Pedersen (Peder Oluf Pedersen, 1874 -1941) was a Danish engineer and physicist. He is notable for his work on electrotechnology and his cooperation with Valdemar Poulsen on the developmental work on Wire recorders, which he called a telegraphone , and the arc converter known as the Poulsen Arc Transmitter. Pedersen became a professor of telegraphy, telephony and radio in 1912. He became principal of the College of Advanced Technology (Den Polytekniske Læreanstalt) in 1922, a title he held until his death. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and was a member of the British Institution of Electrical Engineers. In 1915 he became a Fellow of the Institute of Radio Engineers. Pedersen includes Armstrong in his publication 'On the Lichtenberg Curves', 1919

An album of original watercolour drawings of Cassowaries, with related manuscript title "Kasuare / Walter Rothschild"

"London 1899 - Contemporary brown morocco-backed cloth-covered boards, dark red morocco box Provenance: Otto Fockelmann (of Hamburg, near-contemporary signature in blue ink on title) Pre-publication presentation manuscript with watercolour drawings depicting the 17 species or sub-species of Cassowaries identified by Rothschild in his "Monograph of the genus Casuarius" published in 1900. In December 1900, Walter Rothschild published his seminal work on the cassowary in the Transactions of the Zoological Society (vol.XV, pt.5, pp.109-290), which included exquisite plates by John Gerrard Keulemans. The manuscript title of the present album, however, is dated the year prior. The fine watercolours in the present album, each of which bears close comparison with the finished plates as included in Rothschild's "Monograph of the Genus Casuarius," are the work of fine bird artist John Gerrard Keulemans. Keulemans worked from the live birds housed in Lord Rothschild's private menagerie at Tring and travelled to Germany to sketch the live specimens at the Zoological Gardens of Berlin. This latter fact, allied with Otto Fockelmann's name on the title may provide the most likely explanation for the existence of this unique pre-publication manuscript. Rothschild was scouring the world for any species or sub-species that had escaped his notice. The Fockelmanns were well-known dealers in rare birds, based in Hamburg, and they would have been contacted to ask if they could help, perhaps by Keulemans at Rothschild's request during one of his trips to Germany. Before the publication of the monograph, the original watercolours were the most accurate method of recording the species that Rothschild had already identified, and the present images may, in part, have been produced to allow the Fockelmanns to eliminate them from Rothschild's "shopping list". The Fockelmanns were evidently much taken with the drawings, as it seems likely that they were responsible for its current final form: with a German title, a map with German place names, and a loosely inserted index (with Rothschild's name spelled incorrectly, and notes in German) with additional species which had been identified by Anton Reichenow added in 1913. [With:] ROTHSCHILD, Lionel Walter, Baron Rothschild (1868-1937) - John Gerrard KEULEMANS (1842-1912, artist). A Monograph of the Genus Casuarius . London: 1900. Extract from the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London , vol. XV.-Part 5, pp. 109-290. Quarto (12 x 9 1/2 inches). 24 plates (18 hand-coloured lithographed plates of birds, 2 hand-coloured lithographed maps and 3 photolithographed plates). Period blue buckram, original blue wrappers bound in. For the published work, see: Anker 547; Nissen IVB 796; Wood p.543. For Keulemans life and work, see T. Keulemans & Jan Coldewy, Feathers to Brush The Victorian Bird Artist John Gerrard Keulemans (Epse, The Netherlands & Melbourne, Australia: 1982). (8 3/8 x 11 1/4 inches). Black ink calligraphic manuscript title, manuscript map in blue ink of New Guinea, northern extremities of Australia and the surrounding islands, hand-coloured with a related key beneath to show the distribution of the various species and sub-species, 7 plates of pen-and-ink and watercolour drawings of various species of cassowary (the first five plates each with three heads, the sixth plate with two heads and the final plate with a fine full-length study of an adult and a young bird). Loosely inserted is an early manuscript listing (in the same hand as the captioning of the plates and the index to the map) of various species of the birds, with common names and locations.         STORY OF LITTLE BLACK SAMBO

London: Grant Richards, 1899. Rare First Edition. Illustrated in color throughout with twenty-seven full-page illustrations by the author, engraved on wood and color-printed by Edmund Evans. 16mo, publisher&#146;s original light green cloth lettered and decorated in dark green, the upper cover and spine with ruled borders and vertical stripes and author and title printed in compartments. Morocco backed clamshell box with the spine printing in gilt. viii, 57, [1, blank], [1, printer&#146;s imprint], [1, blank] A very nice copy, light aging and touch-ups to the binding, a very well preserved copy with little evident wear, corners, head and tail all in very nice condition, the textblock clean and tight. IMPORTANT AND RARE FIRST EDITION AND A VERY WELL PRESERVED COPY OF THIS CHILDREN&#146;S CLASSIC. Bannerman wrote her stories to entertain her own children. LITTLE BLACK SAMBO was their favorite. The author never intended the book for publication, but through the encouragement of her children and friends the manuscript was shown to E.V. Lucas who agreed to publish it as the fourth title in his series of &#145;The Dumpy Books for Children&#146;&#148; (Schiller, p. 381)<br> Together with Beatrix Potter, Helen Bannerman established the genre of children&#146;s books that gave pictures and text equal importance. Very few copies of the original printing have survived, and of the copies known, most have been badly worn because the small book was unable to withstand the constant handling of children. &#147;Should a census eventually be attempted, there would probably be fewer copies located than of the notoriously rare and suppressed 1865 Alice&#148; (Schiller, p. 386)

Stamped on reverse: Larss & Duclos Succrs. To Hegg & Co. Dawson, Y. T.Major General Sir Samuel Benfield Steele, CB, KCMG, MVO (January 5, 1851 &#150; January 30, 1919) was a famous member of the North West Mounted Police. He joined the local militia as a teenager and fought against the Fenians at the Battle of Ridgeway. He was sent west first to fight the Red River Rebellion of Louis Riel, but arrived after the Métis had surrendered. Steele had long been fascinated by the west, devouring the works of James Fenimore Cooper in his youth. He was especially interested in the First Nations, and spent his time in the west learning from them and the Metis. However he was recalled from Manitoba and based in Fort Henry in Kingston for the next few years. He was chosen to be one of the first members of the NWMP, being only the third officer sworn in. In 1873 he returned to Fort Garry with the new force and was put in charge of drilling the new recruits. Over the next few years he crisscrossed the prairies, before being assigned to NWMP headquarters to train new recruits. In 1881 he was assigned to meet with Sitting Bull, who fresh from defeating General Custer had moved into Canada and was demanding land for his people. Steele and a few officers met them and reached a peaceful agreement. This action won Steele great acclaim in the newspapers of the United States and was the beginning of his role as a public figure. In the North-West Rebellion Steele was dispatched with a small force. Missing the Battle of Batoche Steele and his force were sent to move against the last rebel force lead by Chief Big Bear. Steele and his two dozen Mounties defeated Big Bear's force at Loon Lake in the last battle ever fought on Canadian territory. The contributions of the NWMP to putting down the rebellion went largely ignored and unrewarded, to Steele's great annoyance. Steele spent the next ten years assigned to Fort McLeod, and at age 41 married Maria Harwood, eventually the couple had three children. In 1898 he was sent north to the Yukon to succeed Charles Constantine with policing during the Klondike Gold Rush. Initially, he was in charge of the customs posts at the Chilkoot Pass and White Pass, where he created the rule that no one would be allowed to enter without a ton of goods. Steele and his force made the Klondike Gold Rush into one of the most orderly events of its kind in history and made the police force famous around the world, which ensured its survival at a critical time when the force's dissolution was being debated in parliament. In 1900 he was second in command in Lord Strathcona's Horse, a Canadian light cavalry unit sent to South Africa during the Boer war and did so with distinction. Steele, however, disliked greatly what he was ordered to do by the British, which included burning towns and moving the populace to concentration camps.Steele was knighted in 1918 and was made a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, and Member of the Royal Victorian Order.Canada's fifth tallest mountain, Mount Steele, is named after him.         [Photo Album]: Early Snapshots including Sporting

New Jersey. 1899. Oblong quarto. Pebbled cloth with leather corners and spine with "photographs" stamped in guilt on the front board measuring 9" x 11.5". A collection of 201 sepia toned, and 2 cynotype photographs, most measuring 3.5" x 4", affixed to stiff cream paper with captions. The album is good only with spotting, tears, and lacking the leather on the spine; the pictures are about near fine with some edgewear. A vernacular photo album from the Plainfield Ward of Union, New Jersey and the surrounding suburbs from 1899, kept by Dewitt Hubbell, a Massachusett-born banker at the Plainfield Savings Bank. The album depicts Victorian Americans in a variety of posed pictures along with candids using the new technology of the "snapshot" around New jersey including Union and Montclair. The collection combines around the home photographs of smiling families, various dogs and cats, and trips around the tri-state area. Roughly 29 photos were taken during various hunting trips, including one during Labor Day weekend 1900 at Scituate Beach, Massachusetts depicting the setting up of blinds and men shooting birds. "Snapshot" photography, defined as " a photograph that is "shot" spontaneously and quickly, most often without artistic or journalistic intent," is said to have started around 1888 with the Kodak No. 1 camera, and was cemented as a pastime with the introduction of the Brownie Box Camera in 1900. This collection dates to around 1899, predating the Brownie and is an extensive and very early assemblage of vernacular snapshot photography, with pleasing images evoking the potential of the new technology. .

        Wireless telegraphy

1899. Marconi, Guglielmo (1874-1937). Wireless telegraphy. In Journal of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, XXVIII, no. 139 (April 1899): 273-290. Discussions: 291-316. Whole volume. x, 694pp. Plates, folding tables, text illustrations. Errata slip inserted before p. 367. 206 x 133 mm. Modern half calf, marbled boards. Light toning, volume title a bit soiled, but very good. <p>First Edition. Marconi&#39;s first paper on wireless telegraphy.</p><p> "Marconi seems to have learned in 1894 of Hertz&#39;s laboratory experiments with electromagnetic waves. He was immediately curious as to how far the waves might travel, and began to experiment, with the assistance of Prof. A. Righi of Bologna. His initial apparatus resembled Hertz&#39;s in its use of a Ruhmkorff-coil spark gap oscillator and dipole antennas with parabolic reflectors, but it replaced Hertz&#39;s spark-ring detector with the coherer that had been employed earlier by Branly and Lodge. [Lodge was only able to transmit and receive over a distance of 150 yards.] Marconi quickly discovered that increased transmission distance could be obtained with larger antennas, and his first important invention was the use of sizable elevated antenna structures and ground connections at both transmitter and receiver, in place of Hertz&#39;s dipoles. With this change he achieved in 1895 a transmission distance of 1.5 miles (the length of the family estate), and at about the same time conceived of &#39;wireless telegraph&#39; communication through keying the transmitter in telegraph code" (DSB). </p><p>Marconi was the son of Giuseppe Marconi, a wealthy landowner, and his second wife, Annie Jameson, daughter of an Irish whiskey distiller. His education was private, and included special instruction in physics. When Marconi could not interest the Italian government in the potential of his work he moved to London where one of his Irish cousins, Henry Jameson Davis, helped him to prepare a patent application. Davis also arranged demonstrations of the wireless telegraph for government officials and in 1897 helped form and finance the Wireless Telegraph and Signal Co., Ltd. In 1900 this became Marconi&#39;s Wireless Telegraph Co., Ltd. </p><p>Due to the great interest in the above presentation, Marconi had to read the paper twice, and the journal records two sets of discussions. Within a year after this speech Marconi increased his signaling distance to 150 miles, and decided to attempt to transmit across the Atlantic. In 1901 Marconi succeeded in wireless transmission across the Atlantic. In 1909 he shared the Nobel Prize for physics with K. F. Braun. From Gutenberg to the Internet, reading 5.4. Origins of Cyberspace 174. Printing and the Mind of Man 382 cited Marconi&#39;s Provisonal Specification for his patent dated June 1896. Dibner, Heralds of Science, 72 cited Marconi&#39;s patent published in 1899.</p>

Theory of the Leisure Class An Economic Study in the Evolution of Institutions.

New York The Macmillan Company 1899 - "One Of The Most Provocative Books Written By An American Intellectual": First Edition Of Veblen's Landmark Theory Of The Leisure Class VEBLEN, Thorstein. The Theory of the Leisure Class. An Economic Study in the Evolution of Institutions. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1899. First edition of the author&#146;s first book and one of the masterpieces of American social thought and economic theory. Octavo (7 1/2 x 5 3/16 inches; 190 x 131 mm). viii, 400, [2, publisher's ads], [2, blank] pp. Original dark green cloth. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Front board ruled in blind. Top edge gilt, others uncut. A bit of soiling and rubbing to the cloth of front and back boards. A ring spot on back board. Spine slightly darkened. Head and tail of the spine with some minor shelf wear. Overall a very good copy. Housed in a full green morocco clamshell. "Almost a century after its original publication, Thorstein Veblen's work is as fresh and relevant as ever. Veblen's Theory of the Leisure Class is in the tradition of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan, yet it provides a surprisingly contemporary look at American economics and society. Establishing such terms as 'conspicuous consumption' and 'pecuniary emulation,' Veblen's most famous work has become an archetype not only of economic theory, but of historical and sociological thought as well. An iconoclastic masterpiece of American social thought. Veblen assails the sacrosanct concepts borrowed from evolutionary biology and used to justify social inequality. The fruit of much lonely study and contemplation, this first book of Veblen's catapulted him to prominence at the age of 42. Thoroughly independent and ornery in his living and thinking, Veblen began here his long and provocative criticism of the business enterprise system. his ideas were seminal and his influence is continuous" (100 Influential American Books). With this work Veblen also launched a radical critique of conventional economics, which he viewed as an assemblage of intellectual fictions, out of touch with economic reality-and worse, used to camouflage injustice in the name of natural laws. In place of traditional theory, Veblen introduced the concept of "Institutionalism," according to which economic behavior is conditioned by particular cultural value systems. Veblen's challenge to conventional economic analysis achieved immediate and lasting influence. But unlike such Institutionalists as Commons and Ely, Veblen offered no program of practical reform. For Veblen change was at best evolutionary and impersonal, dependent at this historical moment on the rise of a new class of technocrats whose predilection for rational efficiency might replace the pecuniary values of the captains of industry. "One of the most provocative books written by an American intellectual" (Adams, Radical Literature, 59). Grolier, 100 American, 100. HBS 66008. $4000 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
