The New Metropolis: 1600--Memorable Events of Three Centuries--1900. From the Island of Mana-Hat-Ta to Greater New York at the Close of the Nineteenth Century. Illustrated with One Thousand Engravings

New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1899. First edition. Blindstamped Cloth. Very Good. xxii, 639, [32] pp. 4to oblong, 10 by 13 inches. Profusely illustrated, photographs, drawings, maps, with some color. One of the most satisfying and entertaining of New York-related books that covers the entire landscape -- history, culture, architecture, its society, high and low -- shortly after the formation of the city as we now know it, with the merger of the five boroughs just one year before publication, in 1898. This book was issued to celebrate that event, but it is far, far more than a souvenir. In its comprehensiveness and authoritativeness, it remains a highly usable fount of information about aspects of the city both then and at times, surprisingly, today. There are probably no other books that alone can transport one back to the turn of the twentieth century in Gotham as seamlessly as this work, and its achievement literally towers over the vast literature about the city that has accumulated ever since. The cloth has minor soiling and edgewear. The interior is clean and tight -- remarkably so, given the weight of the oblong work.

        The River War

London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green & Co.,, 1899. An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan. Edited by Col. F. Rhodes. Illustrated by Angus McNeill, Seaforth Highlanders. 2 volumes, octavo (224 × 150 mm) Slightly later red half morocco by Morrell for Sotheran's, red linen boards, dark green morocco labels, dotted roll to raised bands, double-fillet gilt panels to the compartments, matching roll to spine and corner edges, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Portrait frontispiece in each volume. 4 illustrated plates and 11 folding maps in volume I, 2 illustrated plates and 9 folding maps and three non-folding maps in volume II, and numerous illustrations, maps and plans in the text. A little rubbed at the extremities, light toning to the text, but overall very good set, well presented. First edition, first impression, second state - minor typographic error (second inverted comma missing after THE 'LONDON GAZETTE[']) corrected on p. 459 of volume II - of Churchill's second book, preceded only by The Story of the Malakand Field Force (1898), "2000 copies published on 6 November 1899" (Woods). This set signed by Churchill on the half-title of volume I, and initialled by him on the binder's blank in volume II, and uncommon thus. It includes, of course, his account of the charge of the 21st Lancers, to whom he was attached, at Omdurman on 2 September 1898, described by Sir E.T. "Bill" Williams in the old Dictionary of National Biography as "that last cavalry charge of the dying century", a set-piece in a book that Williams considers a "superb" history; Churchill himself described his work more graphically as a "a tale of blood and war". Rarely encountered signed.

1899. Illustrated by Ernest Prater. London: James Bowden, 1899. 8 pp undated ads. Original pictorially decorated olive green cloth, beveled. First Edition of this novel for adults. A general has died in India, and his child the heir has disappeared -- though a certain rogue surfaces to claim the inheritance in the child's absence... One would assume, looking at the binding, that it is one of Henty's typical historical adventures for "young lads": it shows a fallen man under a tiger, while a soldier and a man astride an elephant rush to his rescue. The publisher, James Bowden (recently retired as managing director of the firm of Ward Lock & Bowden), clearly put this novel into such a binding with the hope of stimulating sales by deluding people into thinking it was another Henty book for boys; this undoubtedly upset Henty, as he had a contract with Blackie for all such titles.~This is a fine, bright copy -- though the endpapers have hairline cracks and there is occasional foxing on this thick wove paper. Although the number of copies of the first edition of THE LOST HEIR is not known, it could not have been many, as it is an uncommon book -- like most all of Henty's books for adults. Newbolt 87.1 (and Plate 14).

Avvisi nuovi et certezza della parte di mezzo giorno. Dove s'intende tre infideli Rè della fede Mahomettana convertiti, & battezzati con li suoi regni, & venuti alla nostra Christiana fede. Florence, 16 February 1571. Small 8vo (15 x 10.5 cm). With the large woodcut coat of arms of Pope Pius V (74 x 62 mm). Sewn in later stiff paper wrappers.

Nijhoff, General catalogue 293 (1899), 221 "Très rare"(likely this copy); cf. De Backer & Sommervogel V, col. 307 (1609 French ed.); EDIT 16 (1 copy of undated Rome ed.); ICCU (1 copy of same undated Rome ed.); WorldCat (1 copy of different(?) undated Rome ed., and later eds.); (1571 Paris ed.). Apparently unique Florence edition (the first dated edition, published at most a few months after the first Rome edition) of a letter written from "Isola della Madera" in "India" on 17 August 1570 by a Portuguese Jesuit missionary. He gives an account of missionary work in the East Indies, India and possibly elsewhere (some of the place names are difficult to identify) from August 1569 to January 1570 and particularly of the conversion of three Kings from Islam to Christianity. The first was the King of Manado, clearly meaning the northernmost tip of Sulawesi/Celebes in the East Indies, and the letter tells of further work among the nearby "Cauripa" (Kaidipan) and in "Battachina" (Halmahera or part of it) across the Maluku Sea near Ternate. Magaglianes then passes to Goa in India, including "terre di Salsette" (Salcette), so it was apparently in India that the "gran Re di Porcada" was converted, though we have found no such place in that region. Finally comes the conversion of the "Re di Cocin", probably not Cohin China (southernmost Vietnam) but Kochi on the south-west coast of India. Magaglianes or Magalhaens (d. 1574) worked as a missionary in the East Indies from 1561. Perhaps he wrote from Madeira on his way home to Portugal, but it is odd that he places it in "India" so "Madera" may mean some island in the East Indies or India. The letter is said to actually be a conflation of three letters by three different Jesuit missionaries, published in Nuovi avisi dell' India, Rome, [1570] (Streit, Bibliotheca missionum IV, 944).If the transcriptions in online catalogues are accurate there were two undated editions, both published by Giovanni Gigliotti, but we have located only four copies counting both together. It was translated into French as Nouveaux advertissemens tres certains, venus du pays des Indes Meridionales, Paris, Jean Dallier, 1571, and into German at Dillingen in the same year (VD16 W 439). It made a deep impression all over Europe. In good condition, with the title-page very slightly abraded, minor foxing and a faint marginal water stain not approaching the text.

        Une Election a Tigre-Sur-mer

Edition Du Gaulois, Paris 1899 - Oblong folio, red pebbled cloth with large paste-down color pictorial illustration on front cover. About fine. With the appearance of a children's book, the setting is a schoolroom with an abbot instructing a child. Actually it is a record of an 1899 campaign for a Boulangiste candidate in the Norman village where Gyp summered, told in a childish narrative and 36 full page cartoonish drawings in color and black and white by "Bob". The Countess was a fanatical anti-Semite and anti-Dreyfusard who denounced populist democracry and the parliamentary French Republic in numerous sketches and novels. She identified Boulanger, who vowed to save France in a time of crisis, with Napoleon I whom she idolized. Georges Boulanger was a conservative French general and politician who threatened a coup d'etat and the establishment of a dictatorship advocating revenge on Germany and a return to the monarchy. According to the newspaper Le Temps, Gyp harangued the peasants and fisherman of the peaceful coastal town, bribed the children with candy and distributed posters insulting the government, for which she was fined.         Ink Blocks (9) Depicting Scenes From everyday Life

1899. 9 blocks held in a cloth covered box. The blocks, in different shapes, are in bas-relief, delicately findished off in gold and depict scences from everyday life. Box a little rubbed, else in good condition. End 19th century? In China calligraphy is an ancient art, practised by every cultivated person. Four of the objects necessary to perform this art are considered as "the four treasures of the Study": Writing Brush, Ink-sticks, Paper and Ink-stone. The writing brushes peculiar to China, are classified into "Hard", "Soft" and "Both", and are made with hairs of different animals. Their history possibly goes back six thousand years. Paper is one of the most famous Chinese inventions, about two thousand years old. There are many different kinds, but the best one, both for Chinese calligraphy and painting, is the so-called "Xuan", soft and fine textured. The Ink-slab or Ink-stone, is also quite ancient; it can be made of different materials, such as jade, porcelain, copper, silver and, naturally, stone. The most primitive ink-stones had a pestle to grind pigments. "The ink-stick is the unique pigment of Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy. At the initial stage natural ink or half natural ink was generally used. It was during the Han period that artificial ink appeared" (www.chinavista). A short but interesting history of the Ink-stick is given in Wikipedia: "Legend says that King Yi first invented ink stick about 2,800 years ago, yet archaeologists have detected ink marks on the back of inscribed bones or tortoise shells of the Shang Dynasty, 3,200 years ago. There are many varieties of ink stick. The most famous is hui, mo (Anhui ink stick), made from the pines that grow on Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) in Anhui Province. The trees are burned and the soot left after burning makes excellent ink stick. Xi, a famous ink maker, moved to Shexian County in Anhui at the end of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). His method for making ink stick from pine soot was handed down to later generations... Ink stick falls into three major categories, according to the chief materials used in manufacture. The pine-soot ink stick: this is made with the mixture of pine soot, which is the main part, a certain amount of glue, medicinal material and spices. The oil-soot ink stick: Tung oil, sesame oil, rapeseed oil or petroleum is burned and the soot is mixed with gelatine, medicinal material and spices. The oil- and pine soot ink stick: This is a mixture of the previous materials for making the oil-soot ink stick and pine-soot ink stick. Proportions vary, and the quality of the ink differs accordingly". The present set of Ink sticks is the kind which was traditionally given to the successful imperial examinee. The blocks could be shaped in several different ways, such as animals, different objects, elegantly dressed women, and endless other variants.

[iv], 116, [2, adv.] pp.Contemporary full green crushed morocco by a gifted yet unsigned binder in the arts and crafts style with hand-tooled gilt border featuring onlaid red morocco dots enclosing a centerpiece of curved gilt stems and onlaid red morocco dots and onlaid green morocco foliage, to each cover. Gitl-rolled edges. Turn-ins reiterate the cover border. All edges gilt. Spine sunned to warm olive. A fine copy.Robert Seymour Bridges (1844-1930) was a British poet, and poet laureate of England from 1913 to 1930. He practiced medicine but lung disease forced him to retire in 1882, and from that point on he devoted himself to writing and literary research. Bridges' literary work, however, started long before his retirement, his first collection of poems having been published in 1873. As a poet Bridges stands apart from modern English verse yet his work has had great influence in a select circle, by its restraint, purity, precision, and delicacy yet strength of expression.

The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study in the Evolution of Institutions

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1899. First edition of the author's landmark work. Octavo, original green cloth, gilt topstain. In near fine condition with only light shelfwear to the extremities. Housed in a custom clamshell box. A very sharp copy. Almost a century after its original publication, Thorstein Veblen's work is as fresh and relevant as ever. Veblen's Theory of the Leisure Class is in the tradition of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan, yet it provides a surprisingly contemporary look at American economics and society. Establishing such terms as 'conspicuous consumption' and 'pecuniary emulation,' Veblen's most famous work has become an archetype not only of economic theory, but of historical and sociological thought as well. An iconoclastic masterpiece of American social thought. Veblen assails the sacrosanct concepts borrowed from evolutionary biology and used to justify social inequality. The fruit of much lonely study and contemplation, this first book of Veblen's catapulted him to prominence at the age of 42. Thoroughly independent and ornery in his living and thinking, Veblen began here his long and provocative criticism of the business enterprise system. his ideas were seminal and his influence is continuous" (100 Influential American Books).

        Funny Folks

New York.: E. P. Dutton & Co.. First Edition.. 1899.. Oversized hardcover book 16.5 x 12 inches, illustrated with color and black and white cartoons (both narrative panels and solo pieces); 41 pages printed on one side only. Bright and clean red cloth covers, with small area of irregular fading on back cover. The fabric hinge of the front cover is exposed; the paper originally covering it has curled and pulled away. The sturdier rear hinge shows signs of replicating the problems at the front. Corners are bumped; tiny exposed board where cloth has worn at bottom free end of front and back covers. Short tears in margins of several interior pages. Franklin Morris Howarth is considered one of the pioneers in the early years of the American comic strip. This compilation brought together the varied cartoon formats employed by Howarth and published in "Puck," with special attention given to his color lithographed panel cartoons. Howarth also published cartoons in the early humor magazines "Judge" and "Life" and created a Sunday newspaper strip entitled "Lulu and Leander." "Funny Folks" is an uncommon volume and an important benchmark in the evolution of American comic strip art. Despite the problems noted, the volume is in remarkably good condition, clean and bright. .

The Weavers [Die Weber; De Waber]; Together with a Program for the Play [Each Signed / Unterzeichnet] Clare Booth Luce's copy, Signed by her

London: William Heinemann, 1899. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first UK edition, first printing, being the first printing in English (spine ends and board corners very lightly rubbed, leading bottom corners gently bumped, damage to the front pastedown's lower right corner due to removal of something once attached there, some offsetting to the rear pastedown and opposing endpaper face -- lacking the extremely scarce dust jacket), SIGNED BY GERHARD HAUPTMANN on the title page; TOGETHER WITH an ORIGINAL PROGRAM FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF "THE WEAVERS" At NEW YORK CITY'S GARDEN THEATRE for the Play's run there beginning on December 14, 1915 and continuing for 87 performances -- ending in February 1916, SIGNED BY GERHART HAUPTMANN to the front page's bottom margin (being in Very Good condition with some age toning as well as with some splitting at the top and bottom of the spine crease). Emanuel Reicher both directed the Play and took the role of Old Ansorge in it. German dramatist and Novelist Gerhart Hauptmann won the 1912 Nobel Prize in Literature "primarily in recognition of his fruitful, varied and outstanding production in the realm of dramatic art". In presenting the Award to Gerhart Hauptmann, Hans Hildebrand, then the Acting Secretary of the Swedish Academy, gave particular praise the "The Weavers", noting it as being the work in which Hauptmann first (at age 30) displayed his mature powers. "The Weavers", first published in Germany (1892), deals with a group of Silesian weavers who, during the 1840s, staged an uprising because of their concerns about the Industrial Revolution. (The Play provided the basis for the 1927 silent film of the same name directed by Frederic Zelnik and starring Paul Wegener.) Of The Weavers, noted Theatre Critic stated that, "as one of Gerhart Hauptmann's experiments in dramatic form, The Weavers is highly significant. Instead of a hero, he has created a mob; this mob is therefore the protagonist—or chief character—and if individuals emerge from the rank and file they are not thrust into the foreground to stay long. It is the weavers as a class that are ever before us, and the unity of the play is in them and in them alone; they are only parts of a larger picture which will take shape as the story advances, and are not intended to be taken as important individuals." Having a notable Provenance, this copy belonged to editor, playwright, journalist, ambassador, socialite, and U.S. Congresswoman (representing Connecticut) Clare Boothe Luce and carries her elegant possession signature to the front free endpaper. Copies of this important Hauptmann work are not at all common, signed copies in any edition or printing are more uncommon still, and copies signed by Gerhart Hauptmann, especially when in English translation, are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy of one of Gerhart Hauptmann's most important works, having an excellent Provenance and having been SIGNED BY THE PRIOR OWNER, CLARE BOOTHE LUCE and, most notably, SIGNED BY GERHART HAUPTMANN, TOGETHER WITH AN ORIGINAL PROGRAM FOR FIRST AMERICAN RUN OF THE PLAY, ALSO SIGNED BY GERHART HAUPTMANN. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO RARE.
