München, 1898. Ferrotypie auf Blech. Bildgröße 7 x 5 cm, mit Rahmen 8,3 x 6 cm. Die Rückseite mit Eigenwerbung bedruckt. In bedrucktem Original-Pappetui. Lear Edward
Frederick Warne and Co, 1898. First published in 1865 this is the third publication by the polymath Edward Lear. Given that his first two works were a book of accurately drawn parrot species and a travelogue, it is not difficult to justify his description as a polymath. For fifty years after its first publication, ‘Book of Nonsense’ was reprinted and republished at a bewildering rate. It is impossible in most cases to associate a book with a particular printing since the majority were neither dated nor enumerated. To add to the bewilderment many shortened versions were issued some containing as few as eight pages. Whilst it is impossible to be exact, we believe that this book is a printing from the middle to late 1890s and contains all 113 illustrations intended for the book. The book is, at least, 125 years old and was intended for children. It is little short of miraculous, therefore, that any of them have survived into the 21st century in any state at all. Until recently, the only copies we came across have been distressed beyond any useful purpose. This book is one of the little miracles that has survived. It is complete, intact, unmarked (with one exception) and has only almost inconsequential areas of damage. The front cover is wonderfully vivid and colourful. The red background has not faded, the black lettering with gilt outline is unmarked and none of the gilt on the figures is faded or damaged. The spine is firmly and completely attached although the red lettering has fared less well and whilst complete has lost its outlining. The gilt edges to the page block may … [Click Below for Full Description]

CLAUDEL (Paul)
[Click Below for Full Description]
