KUMAZAWA KITAR? ????? (ILLUSTRATED BY).
Tokyo: Kumazawa Kitarō 熊澤喜太郎, Meiji 31-32 [1898-1899]. Tokyo: Kumazawa Kitarō 熊澤喜太郎. Meiji 31-32 [1898-1899].. 18 colour lithographs in Japanese accordion album, patterned cloth covered boards. Folded leaves opening in a few places, lightly creased at the lower lower of two pages. 21.5 x 14.5cm. This item is an album containing 18 lithograph (hand-coloured) prints, each of which depicts a small child at play. The artist who was also the publisher of this album was Kumazawa Kitarō 熊澤喜太郎 who was a lithographer and publisher. Kumazawa Kitarō specialised in depicting beautiful ladies and small children. We have been able to find work by Kumazawa from Meiji 21 (1888) and his work appears to have been popular however we have not been able to find details about his life or when he died. At this time during the Meiji Era (1887-97) lithographs were very popular in Japan due it seems to the more realistic representations used. In fact their popularity was such that they took quite a share of the woodblock print market at the time. Playful children, such as those in this album, were a particularly popular topic for these lithographs. The children depicted here are engaged in various activities. Titles of the plates are: Oman-chan おまんちゃん [Little Oman (girl's name?]; Okagura おかぐら [Festival Dancing]; Mizu-asobi 水遊 [Playing with Water]; Tonosama とのさま [Feudal lord]; Okeiku おけいく [Practice?]; Fūsen ふうせん [Balloon]; Jitenshiya じてんしや [Bicycle]; Teasobi-du てあそびづ [?]; Akachiyan あかちやん [Baby]; Botsuchiyan ぼつちやん [Boy]; Otenarai おてならい [Learning Writing]; Matan'ya またんや [?]; Neko-asobi ねこあそび [Playin … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILDE, OSCAR
London: Leonard Smithers, 1898. First Edition. FIRST EDITION, one of only 800 copies (out of a total edition of 830) printed on handmade paper. "Convicted in 1895 of a grave offense against morality, Wilde was imprisoned for two years. A literary result of this imprisonment was the most powerful of his poems, The Ballad of Reading Gaol (1898)..." (New International Encyclopedia). "Wilde began to write [The Ballad of Reading Gaol] at the end of May, the month in which he was released, completing it in October, and seeing it published by Smithers in February 1898, initially signed C. 3. 3. Its theme was the man hanged in Reading while Wilde was there... With high dramatic sense Wilde turned the sufferings of all the other convicts into a subordinate but supportive chorus. The poem made no denial of guilt, although its hanged prisoner ultimately suffered more than the rest, and embodied their agonies more intensely. The Ballad followed the advice of De Profundis to Douglas, and sustained itself by love, ultimately the redeeming love of Christ, rather than hatred of custodians... Hatred of the prison system and of the human oppression that created it animated the Ballad: but the poem confronted that cruelty with the love of Christ against which it offended. Chesterton would see the Ballad as 'a cry for common justice and brotherhood very much deeper, more democratic' than the most radical protest of the age (G. K. Chesterton, Victorian Age in Literature [1913], 227)" (Dictionary of National Biography). London: Leonard Smithers, 1898. Internally clean and fine. ¶ First full exposition of Röntgen's discovery of X-rays, the foundation stones of roentgenology, unveiling a new form of matter and offering a new revolutionary method for medical diagnosis. In order to ensure priority for his discovery, Röntgen first published the two first papers (Erste-Zweite Mittheilung) as offprints from "Sitzungsberichte der Physikalisch-medicinischen Gesellschaft zu Würtzburg" in 1895-96, but his discovery only finds its full form in the offered papers, as "Dritte Mittheilung" appears here."Aside from its obvious applications, Roentgen's discovery galvanized the world of physics and led to a rash of further discoveries that so completely overturned the old concepts of the science, that the discovery of X-rays is sometimes considered the first stroke of the Second Scientific Revolution. (The First Scientific Revolution is, of course that which included Galileo and his experiments on falling bodies). Within a matter of months, investigations of X rays led to the discovery of radioactivity by Becquerel....The importence of the discovery was well recognized in its own time. (One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine 86). "Pavlov summarized his experiments in a series of lectures given in 1896 and published in Russian the following year. A German translation appeared in 1898 and an English one in 1902. For his work on physiology of digestion Pavlov was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1904." (One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine 86). "Scientific Research In the years 1891-1903, Pavlov concentrated on the studies of the digestive system that were systematized in his Lectures on the Work of the Main Gastric Glands (1897) and won him a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1904). In this research, Pavlov's "physiological thinking" was embodied in the "chronic experiment," and his analysis of data was structured by his metaphor of the digestive system as a precise and purposive chemical factory. For the chronic experiment, experimental dogs were prepared surgically with an operation designed to give the experimenter access to a digestive gland. Experiments began only after the dog had recovered and regained a "normal" state. … [Click Below for Full Description]

DARWIN, CHARLES.
S. Peterburg, Tipografija A. Porochovscikova, 1898 8vo. In contemporary half calf. Binding with wear, upper and lower part of spine lacking leather. Light soiling throughout. 232 pp. + 47 pictures on XVI plates. ¶ First Russian translation of Darwin's theory on Pangenesis, Darwin's hypothetical mechanism for heredity, originally published in 1868 in " The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication".The pangenesis theory, similar to Hippocrates's views on the topic, imply that the whole of parental organisms participate in heredity (thus the prefix pan) while adapting to cell theory. Much of Darwin's model was speculatively based on inheritance of tiny heredity particles he called gemmules that could be transmitted from parent to offspring. Darwin emphasized that only cells could regenerate new tissues or generate new organisms. He posited that atomic sized gemmules formed by cells would diffuse and aggregate in the reproductive organs. Kipling, Rudyard, English poet and novelist, Nobel laureate (1865-1936).
"The Vineyard" Hotel, Cape Town, no date [but early March 1898]. 8vo. 1 page. Matted and framed, with a print of William Strang's pencil portrait of the author. On Winter holiday in Cape Town, to Sir Alfred Milner, High Commissioner of British South Africa, shortly before Kipling's departure for Bulawayo in Zimbabwe, the former capital of the dispossessed Ndebele king which Cecil Rhodes had insisted that Kipling visit. Kipling apologizes that he and his wife cannot come that day but promises to come on the following day, and facetiously fabricates an (unpublished) South African variation on a verse from Matthew Arnold's poem "In Memory of the Author of 'Obermann'": "Dear Sir Alfred Milner / I am so sorry we can't come this afternoon but we shall be delighted to come tomorrow. I go up to Bulawayo on Friday and I wanted to see you very much before I went. Very sincerely, Rudyard Kipling. // But those brought forth on state affairs / Where Boer & Briton frown - / What shelter for a talk is theirs / What leisure to sit down? // I have not my Arnold by me just at present and I may have misquoted." - Trace of a minor horizontal fold. Not published in The Letters of Rudyard Kipling.

"The History of England from the Accession of James the Second is the full title of the multi-volume work by Lord Macaulay more generally known as 'The History of England'. The history is famous for its brilliant ringing prose and for its confident, sometimes dogmatic, emphasis on a progressive model of British history, according to which the country threw off superstition, autocracy and confusion to create a balanced constitution and a forward-looking culture combined with freedom of belief and expression. This model of human progress has been called the Whig interpretation of history. Macaulay's approach has been criticised by later historians for its one-sidedness and its complacency. His tendency to see history as a drama led him to treat figures whose views he opposed as if they were villains, while his approved characters were presented as heroes. Macaulay goes to considerable length, for example, to absolve his hero William III of any responsibility for the Glencoe massacre. Macaulay's approach to writing history was innovative for his period. He consciously fused the picturesque, dram … [Click Below for Full Description]

CROWLEY, Aleister ] Writing as 'A Gentleman of the University of Cambridge.'.
Kegan Paul Trench Trubner & Co., London, 1898. Hardcover. Small quarto. viii + 90pp. Original brick-red paper-covered boards with white cloth spine and paper title label. According to Duncombe-Jewell the edition comprised 250 cloth-bound copies on hand-made paper (as this copy), and 2 copies on vellum. There are 3 known binding variants of the hand-made paper edition which have, respectively, dull-green, slate-blue, and - as this copy - brick-red paper covered boards. The order of precedence has never been established although they were most likely published simultaneously. A story in verse, "The Tale of Archais" is commonly said to be Crowley's second published book following "Aceldama," although uncertainty remains as to whether or not his clandestinely-published "White Stains" preceded it. Crowley issued "The Tale of Archais" under the pseudonym "A Gentleman of the University of Cambridge," the same nom de plume that he had used for "Aceldama." The choice of pseudonym was most likely a sort of hommage to Shelley, who wrote his gothic novel "St. Irvyne; or, The Rosicrucian, A Romance," under the nom de plume "A Gentleman of the University of Oxford," although Crowley may well have been aware of early uses of the "Cambridge" version, including by the author of a history of tobacco. Condition: very good. Slightly spotted on the cover and some of the pages. Some of the pages in no. 1 remain uncut. A complete set of all the nos. issued in the opening year of this very important periodical is exceptionally rare. Each no. is complete with b/w and some colour illustrations and advertisements. As written on Arts Search: 'The Poster was the most important journal in English devoted to the art of the poster. In addition to containing over 3,000 images (several in colour), it included interviews with and profiles of many of the leading names in poster design including Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlen, Alphonse Mucha, Ethel Reed, Maxfield Parrish, Paul Berthon, Will Bradley, Arpad Basch, Jules Chéret, Jack B. Yeats, Aubrey Beardsley, the Beggarstaff Brothers, etc.The Poster also includes articles on poster art in Russia, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Japan, Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Denmark, the Netherlands, Great Britain, the USA, etc., as well as articles on specific aspects of the poster, including bicycle posters, political posters, railroad posters, theatre posters, the poster as a mirror of life, plagiarism in poster design, symbolism in advertising, etc. [.] A complete file of The Poster is exceptionally rare, and because this journal has never been indexed, these articles are little known.' Hartleben, Otto Erich, Schriftsteller (1864-1905)
Lindau, Venedig, Florenz, Rom u. a. [1. V. - 22. VII.]. Quer-kl.-4°. Pergamentbd. d. ZOLA Emile
" - In l'Aurore, Paris 13 Janvier 1898, 46x72cm, en feuilles. Edition-originale.com - [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] " In l'Aurore Paris _13 Janvier 1898 46x72cm en feuilles

Keats, John
Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1898. MacDougall, W. B. (William Brown). Small quarto. (55)pp. Eight woodcut illustrations and each page with black floral borders. A fine rendering of John Keats's poem adapted from Boccacio's Decameron. In it, a young woman engaged to marry a nobleman falls in love with a commoner. When her brothers discover their relationship, they murder the commoner. Isabella learns of their crime in a dream, and, distraught, exhumes the body and buries the head in the titular pot of basil, over which she perpetually weeps. This version is sumptuously illustrated with black borders and romantic imagery of Isabella, her lover, her brothers, and their lush countryside. The effect is pleasingly nostalgic, matching the sympathy of Keats's poem. Bound in green cloth over boards with rich gilt tooling to spine and upper cover. Minor general wear to exterior, including three red blotches to lower cover. Overall, a near fine copy with a clean interior.
