- Zur Neuausgabe von 1963 schrieb Cecil Roth im Vorwort: \"The superb medieval codex known as the Sarajevo Haggadah is certainly the most famous of Hebrew illuminated manuscripts: it is among the most beautiful: it is perhaps the most important. Its recorded history goes back only some seventy years. One day in 1894......a child in Sarajevo came to the Jewish communal infant-school bearing an old Hebrew service book under his arm. His father had recently died leaving the family in straitened circumstances and they needed to realise what was possible from the sale of the volume ...... it passed to the Bosnian National Museum. The discovery soon attracted the attention of the eminent scholars and art-historians of Vienna. ........A ..... magnifient publication was issued before long, devoted to the description and consideration of this newly-found treasure. This was the product of collaboration between the Jewish liturgical expert Heinrich Muller and the non-Jewish art-historian Julius von Schlosser, their own work being supplemented by a most impoprtant excursus on medieval Jewish illuminated manuscripts generally, by the Budapest scholar-collector David Kaufmann, the only person who had hitherto studied the subject systematically\".         Antar, Poeme Heroique Arabe Des Temps Anteislamiques.

Edition D’Art, H. Piazza Et Cie., Paris 1898 - 125 pp. of text each illustrated with a drawing, half-title, full leather Bordeaux binding with oriental design, signed by J. la Bruyere, fitted in a slightly worn slipcase, original wrappers bound in, title gilt on raised spine, title printed in Arabic & French within engraved borders, 132 colour illustrations by Etienne Dinet, translated from original Arabic by Marcel Devic, copy in a very good condition. LIMITED EDITION TO 300 COPIES OF WHICH THIS COPY IS NUMBERED 200. An absolutely stunning book. The illustrations by Etienne Alphonse Dinet 1861-1929 bring to life the Arabic legend of Antar, the triumph of good over evil. Dinet spent a large part of his life in Algeria. He exhibited nearly every year his orientalist canvases at the Exposition Universelle and at the Societe des Peintres Orientalistes Francais. This work is the first of a series of highly artistic publications published by Piazza. The poem of Antar was discussed by the famous Frecnh poet Alphonse Lamartine in his "Voyage En Oreint". It was translated for the first time from original Arabic in 1894 by Marcel Devic. It is considered as a masterpiece of Arabic literature written by the famous Arab warrior and poet Antar Bin Shaddad in the XIII century. The scenes by Dinet mainly depict life in the Algerian desert. In 1889 Dinet glorified Antar by a large canvas entitled " La vengeance des fils d’Antar".         C. 1898 Group of 5 Large-Format Albumen Photographs of the USS Yankee - Portside and Underway

Brooklyn New York: Muller Marine Photographer, 1898. Group includes 3 images of the ship at dockside, with sailors and crew, harbor equipment, some ladies visiting, a candid look at the crew and visitors, one with a view of the debarkation of a very fancy launch with whom appears to be the recently-elected Mayor Robert Van Wyck (1847-1918) tipping his bowler to a Navy man's salute - we speculate perhaps these taken at the time when the ship was renamed and commissioned at New York on 14 April 1898 under the helm of Commander Willard H. Brownson (Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships); and 2 images of the ship while moving off to sea, one image having a bit of a view of city buildings in the background; one of the docked images with clear lettering of the ship's name across her port beam; with the small stamp of the Muller Marine Photographer 714 Monroe Street Brooklyn on back of one of the mount cards; photographs approx. 8" x 10" image size, with the mounts, 11" x 14"; "Spanish American War" written in a modern hand on back of one; little waviness to cards, some fading of imagery in one; one image with 1" rub-abrasion; some spottiness to cards; images in very good condition overall and a nice look at this United States Navy cruiser-transport which saw much action in the Spanish American War, on fighting cable-cutting escort, on blockade duty, chasing and engaging in battle with runners, dispatch delivery and ammunition & troop transport, a very active ship. . Copy in very good condition. RARE LIMITED EDITION & NUMBERED EDITION to 380 deluxe copies of which this copy is numbered 66. First edition of the text by Georges Clemenceau about the condition of Jews in Poland. Illustrated with 10 lithographs by Toulouse-Lautrec, this is copy number 66 of the 380 copies printed on fine Arches paper with two suites of the lithographs (on Chine paper and on "velin"). "A shrewd observer of his subjects, Lautrec spent hours in the Tournelle quarter of Paris sketching poor Russian and Polish Jews. The author and Statesman Clémenceau appears twice: seated in the office of the oculist Mayer and talking to two bearded men at Busk". (Garvey) "Nicknamed ‘the Tiger’ due to his steadfast, and often ruthless, political brilliance, Georges Clemenceau was an esteemed French statesman and journalist. He was a key protagonist in the French Third Republic and was twice the Prime Minister of France – between 1906 and 1909, and between 1917 and 1920 when he lead France in the final years of World War I. As Prime Minister, Clemenceau played a central role in drafting the postwar Treaty of Versailles. He was an intellectual, highly articulate and widely cultured, who mixed in both literary and artistic circles and counted amongst his friends a number of Impressionist artists, including Claude Monet. During the 1890s Clemenceau focused his efforts on journalism and established himself as one of the leading political writers of the time. In 1898 he became entangled in the Dreyfus Affair – a scandal that divided France along religious, political and cultural lines for many years. In 1894 the Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus was charged with treason after it was alleged that he had provided to a German attaché documents detailing new designs for French artillery. Dreyfus was convicted and incarcerated on Devil’s Island in French Guiana, where he served twelve years in prison before being exonerated. Taking up Dreyfus’ cause, Emile Zola wrote his famous article J’Accuse ! [I accuse !] in which he charged the military of conspiracy founded on anti-Semitism – a conspiracy that Zola believed involved the French government and the church. In support of Dreyfus and Zola, and in opposition to the anti-Semitic campaigners, Clemenceau decided to publish Zola’s highly controversial article. On 13 January 1898 J’Accuse ! was published on the front page of Clemenceau’s daily newspaper L’Aurore, as an open letter to the then French President, Félix Faure. The furore that ensued saw Zola prosecuted for libel and flee to England to escape imprisonment. Clemenceau continued his political cause, publishing 665 articles defending Dreyfus until his release. Georges Clemenceau’s book, Au pied du Sinaï [At the foot of Sinai] is a collection of stories that details the history and lives of the Jewish people. Although not directly associated with the Dreyfus affair, "Au pied du Sinaï" deals with a politically charged subject and, thus, takes on a pointed sociological meaning in light of the ongoing campaign. Lautrec designed the cover and produced 13 full page illustrations to accompany Clemenceau’s text, in a gesture that showed his support for the cause. Au pied du Sinaï can be viewed as Lautrec’s only foray into the political arena."         Brushwork Studies of Flowers, Fruits and Animals for Teachers and Advanced Students.

London/Liverpool, George Philip & Son (& Nephew), 1898. - Oblong Quarto. Coloured frontispiece, 11 pages of text and XXVII plates with explanations. Original Hardcover (green cloth with lettering to spine and cover). Extraordinarily excellent (Near Mint) condition with barely any signs of wear. Wonderful and rare publication ! Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (11 March 1868 – 16 January 1940), known as Lolly, was born at 23 Fitzroy Road, London. She was the daughter of the Irish artist John Butler Yeats and sister of W. B., Jack and Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats. She trained and worked as an art teacher and was a member of William Morris's circle in London before her family returned to Dublin in 1900. Yeats wrote and created the artwork for "Elementary Brush-Work Studies" (published in 1900), an educational book that teaches young children the technique of painting flowers and plants using her simple method. At the suggestion of Emery Walker, who worked with Morris on the Kelmscott Press, Yeats studied printing with the Women's Printing Society in London. In Dublin, she accepted the invitation to join Evelyn Gleeson to form the Dun Emer Guild along with Lily, who was an embroiderer. Yeats managed the Dun Emer Press from 1902. The Press was located at Runnymede, the house of Evelyn Gleeson. (This house, located in Dundrum, was later renamed Dun Emer. It has since been demolished.) This was set up with the intention of training young women in bookbinding and printing. In 1908, she and her brother William started the Cuala Press, publishing over 70 books including 48 by the poet. Yeats was the first commercial printer in Ireland to work exclusively with hand presses. (Wikipedia)

Yudlov 2053. - Zur Neuausgabe von 1963 schrieb Cecil Roth im Vorwort: "The superb medieval codex known as the Sarajevo Haggadah is certainly the most famous of Hebrew illuminated manuscripts: it is among the most beautiful: it is perhaps the most important. The discovery soon attracted the attention of the eminent scholars and art-historians of Vienna. ........ A ..... magnifient publication was issued before long, devoted to the description and consideration of this newly-found treasure. This was the product of collaboration between the Jewish liturgical expert Heinrich Muller and the non-Jewish art-historian Julius von Schlosser, their own work being supplemented by a most impoprtant excursus on medieval Jewish illuminated manuscripts generally, by the Budapest scholar-collector David Kaufmann, the only person who had hitherto studied the subject systematically".
