The Ballad of Reading Gaol. By C.3.3

London: Leonard Smithers,, 1898. Octavo. Original vellum-backed mustard cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge gilt others untrimmed. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Vellum spine a little dusty, cloth a touch thumbed but an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. The limited issue being one of just 30 numbered copies printed on japon. On the verso of the title page is a hand written, 16-line poem titled "In Memoriam Oscar Wilde" and signed George Ives. The verses allude to those who had betrayed Wilde and ends "Some day on history's page / Shall his mournful fate be told / Young eyes in a better age / Shall weep at this tale of old". Ives was a minor poet and founder of the Order of Chaeronea, a secret society for homosexuals. He was to be one of the very few of Wilde's friends who visited him during his imprisonment.

Der Krieg. Uebersetzung. Des russischen Werkes des Autors: Der zukünftige Krieg in seiner technischen, volkswirtschaftlichen und politischen Bedeutung. Johann von Bloch

Berlin, Puttkammer & Mühlbrecht, , 1898. 6 volumes quarto ( 250 × 174 mm) contemporary black half hard-grained morocco on marbled boards, title gilt to spines, red edge-stain. Profusely illustrated throughout with plates, plans and diagrams, many of them folding, illustrations and tables to the text, many full-page. Slightly rubbed at the extremities, some head- and tail-caps chipping, one gathering in Volume V sprung, light marginal browning otherwise a very good set. . First edition in German, first published in Russian the year previously with a French translation issued the same year. Never fully translated into English, an "abridgement," actually a full translation of the final volume, the General Conclusions, was published in 1899 with an introduction by W. T. Stead under the title "Is War Impossible?" Uncommon, a lost classic of nineteenth-century analytical thought. In January 1916 The New York Times carried a lengthy article headlined "Prophet of Trench Deadlock Vindicated. Ivan S. Bloch, who wrote seventeen years ago, foresaw 'Stalemate' like that on Western Front today, and made many more excellent guesses," which, in trying to give credit, entirely misunderstands one of history's most original, but clearly unappreciated, thinkers. Bloch was a Polish-Jewish banker who was involved developing the railways of the Great Russian Company, his work on the scientific management of railways winning a medal at the Paris Geographical Exhibition on 1875. In 1878 he completed a massive five volume work analysing the economic condition of Russia with special reference to the impact of the railways, which he followed in 1882 with an apologia for government financial policies in the nineteenth century, and a monumental investigation into the conditions of life and industry in various regions across Russia, which also addressed the issue of origins of anti-Semitism, and the rôle of Jews in Russian life, Bloch had himself converted to Calvinism. Shortly before his death he retired from the business world and applying the same statistical methods that he had perfected in his analyses of industry and finance "… immersed himself in the study of modern war." (Gat - The Development of Military Thought. p.109) For eight years he collected and collated data from a wide variety of sources and consulted Russian military experts, filtering the results through his own peculiar intelligence, "He brought to the study of war an entirely new sort of mind, one in which the analytical skills of the engineer, the economist, and the sociologist were all combined. His book was in fact the first work of modern operational analysis." Bloch foresaw the domino-effect caused by the complex tracery of alliances; the creation of an "impassable zone of fire deadly in equal degree to both the foes" on the battlefield; and the disruption caused to the complex interdependencies of the world economy which would be ruinous to the participants, bringing "… even upon the victorious power, the destruction of its resources and the break up of society." The almost incomprehensible mechanism whereby the assassination of a minor aristocrat could lead the Great Powers to the verge of mutually assured destruction. As an avowed pacifist Bloch's rational analysis was certainly influential on the world "peace circuit", but the pre-Great War impact of his work in military and political circles was negligible, recognition coming late and generally grudgingly. Perhaps the most apt plaudit came from another eminent "forecaster", H.G. Wells, who at the time that the NY Times was congratulating Bloch on his "excellent guesses," described him as "the prophet who emerges with the most honour from this war." Wells also chastises the Allies for their failure to read him with profit, whereas; "His book was very carefully studied in Germany. As a humble disciple of Bloch I should have realised this, but I did not, and that failure led me into some unfortunate prophesying at the outbreak of the war. I judged Germany by the Kaiser, and by the Kaiser-worship which I saw in Berlin. I thought that he was a theatrical person who would dream of vast massed attacks and tremendous cavalry charges, and that he would lead Germany to be smashed against the Allied defensive in the West … I did not properly appreciate the more studious and more thorough Germany that was to fight behind the Kaiser and thrust him aside, the Germany we British fight now, the Ostwald-Krupp Germany of 1915. That Germany, one may now perceive, had read and thought over and thought out the Bloch problem." (What is coming?)

London Types [Quatorzains by W.E. Henley]

New York: R.H. Russell, 1898. Large quarto. (13 x 10 3/4 inches). 1p publisher's advertisement at end. 12 plates printed in colours, from original woodcuts by William Nicholson. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards, the upper cover blocked with a design in red and black after Nicholson, the lower cover blocked with a the publisher's mark (light soiling and scuffing to extremities). A fine copy og the first American edition of Nicholson and Henley's important and popular work. William Nicholson, with his brother-in-law James Pryde, produced posters that were a revelation to late 19th-century London. Nicholson went on to adapt his dramatic woodblock style to book illustration, publishing a series of highly successful works (the best known being An Alphabet; London Types; An Almanac of Twelve Sports) before turning to painting full-time with the encouragement of J.McN. Whistler. In the present work, in a striking series of images, Nicholson deftly captures the individual character of fin-de-siecle London 'types.' His selection starts with the bus driver on the cover, and continues inside with the guardsman, the hawker, the beef- eater, the sandwich-man, the coster, the lady, the bluecoat boy, the policeman, the news-boy, the drum-major, the flower girl and the, barmaid. A contemporary New York reviewer was enthusiastic: 'William Nicholson, whom Whistler has pronounced the greatest English artist since Hogarth, will follow up The Alphabet, his fabulous success of last year, with a volume of London Types. His drawing is full of character and has been most successfully reproduced. "A good deal of the effect," says The Critic, "is due to the modest scale of the colors employed. As in the earliest Italian and German attempts in color printing, the modelling and local color are indicated with a few tones of brown and occasional touches of one or two brighter colors. But very few old prints can compare with these for pictorial effect. Mr. Nicholson has learned something of the Japanese, also; and while his treatment is in general simpler than that of his European predecessors, he frequently uses delicate gradations which they did not attempt. His sense of the value of rich blacks in representing masses of deep shadow or of dark local color is extraordinary." His bold and characteristic style is at its best in London Types, of which there is to be a Popular Edition on cartridge paper bound in boards, a Library Edition bound in cloth [on Japanese vellum], and an edition de luxe with hand-colored plates. " (The Literary News [New York: 1898], vol. XIX, p.304). The three editions were published by Russell at $1.50; $3.75 and $45. It is interesting to note that Henley, little known in America at the time, was ignored by the reviewer. A literary editor and poet of note, his best known poem is now 'Invictus': an inspiration to Nelson Mandela on Robben Island and the origin of Clint Eastwood's recent film of the same name.

        THE NIGGER OF THE "NARCISSUS

1898. London: William Heinemann, 1898. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated Autumn 1897. Original grey cloth with gilt life preserver. First English Edition of Conrad's third novel (the slightly earlier American edition was titled THE CHILDREN OF THE SEA). This tale was~the novel which he saw as a turning point in his imagination and in his career... [It] was to shift his concern from Malay subjects to a much deeper and more intense concern with life and death, the mythical sea and the transient individual, survival itself, themes which in ensuing years would become his major subject matter. [Karl]~Conrad planned THE NIGGER to be a short story, to accompany several others he was writing (which would become TALES OF UNREST) -- first referring to it as consisting of "25,000 words at least," six days later projecting it to consist of 30,000, and ultimately bringing it in at well over 50,000.~This copy has the ads in the earliest state (16 pp dated Autumn 1897), and has the publisher's spine imprint in non-uniform large letters (no priority established). It is a very good copy, with wear at the foot of the spine (and just a little at the top); atypically, the brittle laid endpapers are not cracked. Cagle A3.c.1, binding state a.

Marlborough: His Life and Times, full set of four British first edition, first printings in dust jackets

This is a full set of four British first edition, first printings in first printing dust jackets.  Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume.  Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928.  Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s.  The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938.  The work was very well received, both critically and aesthetically.  The first edition is a physically impressive production.  The books measure 9.25 x 6.25 inches and are roughly 2 inches thick.  Each is bound in plum cloth with beveled edges, the Marlborough coat of arms gilt on the front cover, and a gilt top edge.  Moreover, each volume is profusely illustrated.  Unfortunately, the plum cloth binding in Volumes I-III proved highly susceptible to sun fading.  (A different, more fade-resistant dye was used in Volume IV.)  Without the dust jackets, Volumes I-III are nearly always spine faded and jacketed first editions are now scarce.  Particularly scarce are first printing dust jackets for Volumes I & II.  We caution collectors to be wary of price-clipped dust jackets, as later impression Volume I & II dust jackets state either "2nd Impression" or "3rd Impression" printed next to the price on the lower front flap.  No such problem applies to Volumes III & IV, which each had only a single printing.  This full British first edition, first printing set features all four volumes in very good plus or better condition, with the accompanying dust jackets in very good minus or better condition.  The Volume II, III & IV dust jacket retain the original front flap prices.  The Volume I dust jacket is price-clipped, but nonetheless definitively first printing; the clipped portion of the front flap is small and the part of the jacket flap where either "2nd Impression" or "3rd Impression would be printed remains intact with no mention of any later printing.  Moreover, as evidenced by the differential toning of the endpapers caused by the jacket flaps, this first printing book has clearly spent its life with this dust jacket.  The dust jackets proved susceptible to spine toning.  Here spine toning is minimal, with good spine color across the set and the Volume I jacket spine notably retaining the original light gray color.  The Volume II, III, and IV dust jackets are highly complete with only fractional chipping at the spine ends.  The Volume I dust jacket has excellent spine presentation with only fractional chipping at the spine ends, but does show a .25 inch hole at the lower rear hinge, minor losses at edges and corners (the greatest being a .5 inch deep triangular chip at the lower edge of the rear panel), and a small abrasion to the upper third of the rear panel.  The upper rear hinge of the Volume II dust jacket shows some black marks and the Volume IV spine shows some small, light damp stains.  Spine presentation is nonetheless quite good overall.  All four dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers.  The dust jackets have done their job; we note bright, unfaded volumes beneath.  The contents of all four volumes are crisp, bright, and tight.  All four volumes feel unread.  Trivial spotting appears limited to the Volume II & III page edges and the Volume IV endsheets.  The fore edges of Volumes I, II & IV show various degrees of age-toning.  Previous ownership marks are limited to the following: Volume I bears an inked notation on the ffep verso reading "Madison Book Store / 26 May 1938", Volume II bears a single inked previous owner name on the ffep, and Volume III bears an inked gift inscription on the ffep dated "March 28th 1940".  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A97.2(I-IV).a, Woods/ICS A40(aa); Langworth p.166

        The Orchids of Sikkim Himalaya.

Calcutta, printed at the Bengal Secretariat Press, 1898. 4 volumes. Folio (348 x 275mm). pp. (14), iii, iv, 342, 11, with 453 handcoloured lithographed plates. Contemporary half calf, spines with 5 raised bands and gilt lettering. First major publication on the orchids of the Himalaya. George King (1840-1909) was superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic Gardens. In 1887 he launched the 'Annals of the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta', which became the vehicle for impressive and profusely illustrated monographs. The present rare monograph forms the 8th volume of this periodical. Copies with the plates coloured are very rare. The illustrations (all after drawings by R. Pantling) were never issued fully coloured; the colouring is confined to the essential details of the orchids. The 4 volumes are divided as follows: I. Letterpress; II. Plates of Malaxideae; III. Plates of Epidendreae & Vandeae; IV. Plates of Listereae, Goodyereae, Ophrydea & Cypripedieae. "The plates in the 'Orchids of the Sikkim Himalaya'... were coloured by the sons of Nepalese coolies, who had never, until [the author] Mr Pantling took them in hand, been accustomed to use any implements more delicate than a hoe. Mr Pantling's perseverance and skill in drilling these boys into accurate colourists was considered marvellous by all who had seen them at work" (Desmond, The European discovery of the Indian flora p. 152). One plate with loss of corner at the upper margin not affecting the illustration. Provenance: Bookplate of Tessier-Yandell and gilt lettered name of G.T. Lane on frontcover. Nissen BBI, 1051; Stafleu & Cowan 3660.

Antar. Poème Héroique Arabe des Temps Antéislamiques

      H. Piazza et Cie 1898 Four volumes: two volumes Antar, two on Dinét Folio Illustrated in colour by E. Dinet Full binding by Canape (full morocco in burnt orange, cream, olivegreen, purple and brown, heavy gilt, raised bands on spine, inner dentelles, moirée silk doublures, all edges gilt) full morocco with marbled paper chemise, suède lined box. Original wrappers bound in. Georges Canape (1864-1940) succeeded his father J. Canape, in 1894. Like many of his contemporaries, he soon adopted a restrained version of the Art Nouveau esthetic popularized by Marius-Michel. Canape?s own compositions often consisted of floral emblems within rather formal borders. At the annual Paris Salons, he offered the new style, blended with classical revival bindings, all executed with superb technical precision Special edition with an additional (to the coloured ones) suite of plates in black on china paper (This suite separately bound). An absolutely stunning book. The illustrations by Dinet bring to life the legend of Antar, the triumph of good over evil. Dinet spent a large part of his life in Morocco, and he also converted to Islam. He portrayed the people of the desert and their culture as few artists have been able to do. To quote the publishers: ?All of these epic illustrations were drawn by him (Dinet) in nature amongst the people of the Saharas, during the many long years he spent with them, in the mysterious solitude of this region where he has seen the life of the Arabs of the Desert, whose strange and wild poetry he has brought to us with his rare talent. Fights, dances, razzias, caravans, celebrations, hunts, etc., etc., all the parts in the life of the Nomadic Arabs, one will find amongst the compositions which accompany the text of each page of Antar Fine One of 25 copies (of a total edition of 300) on grand velin d?Arches paper

Paardenrassen. Kunstalbum van een en veertig afbeeldingen naar schilderijen van Otto Eerelman. Met beschrijvingen door E.A.L. Quadekker.

Zutphen, Schillemans & Van Belkum, (1898). Large folio (620 x 470mm). With 41 chromo-lithographed plates of horses and accompanying letterpress text in 10 original paper portfolios, preserved in the publisher's pictorial richly gilt cloth portfolio. The rare first limited edition of probably the finest 19th century work on horses. Our copy has the list of subscribers which lists a number of Dutch nobility. The fine plates are after paintings by Eerelman and chromo-lithographs are by J.L. Goffart, the text is by Quadekker. Otto Eerelman (1839-1926) was a famous Dutch animal painter, specializing on hordes and dogs. He likewise painted several portraits of Princes Wilhelmina and later as Queen. At the Royal Palace 'Het Loo' there is painting by him of Queen Wilhelmina riding a horse. The first horse of the present album is Woyko, Wilhelmina's favorite horse, a mixture of an Arabic stallion and a Hungarian mare. Among the horses shown in the album are the Arab Horse, American Race Horse, Andalusian Horse, English Fullbread, Lippizaner Horse, Hannover Horse, Hungarian Horse, Turkish Horse, Russian Race Horse etc. Each plate is accompanied by a 4 page descriptive text. Some plates towards the end with some occasional offsetting on opposite textleaves. A fine copy of this superbly produced work showing the thoroughbreds of the world.

        Über Wärmeleitung in verdünnten Gasen.

Leipzig, Barth, 1898. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. Author's presentation offprint with the printed presentation statement on top of frontwrapper "Überreicht vom Verfasser" [i.e. "Given by the author"]. Offprint from "Annalen der Physik und Chemie", Neue Folge, Band 64, 1898. Two stamp to top left corner of front wrapper. "Habilitations-Schrift" written in ink to top of front wrapper. A fine copy. Pp. 101-130.. First edition, in the scarce author's presentation offprint issue, of this important paper on the discontinuity of temperature widely regarded as being his first important contribution to science. The work is of seminal importance for by publishing it Smoluchowski joined the dispute on the validity of atomic conceptions. These were far from accepted at the end of the nineteenth century and their recognition was partly due to Smoluchowski."In 1875 Warburg and A. Kundt, on the basis of the kinetic theory of gases, had predicted that if the temperature of a gas differed from that of the container wall, the former temperature would not pass continuously to the latter: there would be a discontinuity of temperature between the gas and the wall. Their experiments, successful in the case of the analogous phenomenon of the slipping of gases, had not been decisive for temperature discontinuity. Smoluchowski, observing the cooling time of a thermometer in a gas-filled container, demonstrated that an effect exists and reached significant values with rarefied gas in [The present paper].This work was of special importance. For by publishing it Smoluchowski joined the dispute on the validity of atomic conceptions. These, represented in physics mainly by the kinetic theory of gases developed by Boltzmann. were far from accepted at the end of the nineteenth century; and their recognition was partly due to Smoluchowski. At that time only a few phenomena were predicted by the kinetic theory or required it for intelligibility. Among them was discontinuity of temperature, for its existence was wholly unexplained from a classical point of view. Moreover, in 1897 after his return to Vienna, Smoluchowski pointed out the quantitative agreement of his experimental results with the kinetic theory. In 1898 the University of Vienna admitted him veniam legendi." (DSB)

The Adventures of Captain Bonneville USA in the Rocky Mountains and the Far West Digested From His Journal and Illustrated From Various Other Sources

Pawnee Edition Both volumes of this two volume set are in fine condition in highly decorated white cloth covered boards with beveled edges. The top edges of the text blocks are gilt while the fore and bottom edges are rough cut. Bright gilt text and brown and gilt decorations highlight the spines and front boards. Both volumes are octavos measuring 8 5/8" tall by 6" deep. Volume I contains 339 pages and volume II contains 237 pages. Volume II contains a wonderful, two-color fold-out map within the appendix. Both volumes are illustrated with steel engravings by various artists. The text on each page is bordered by elaborate blue-green designs by the artist noted below. There is a prior owner's name neatly written in ink at the upper corner of the first free end pages. Both volumes are contained within their original, maroon, V cloth, paper backed, dust jackets which are both in very good+ condition. The gilt text stamping on the spine area remains quite bright and readable. As evidenced by her initials on the front board and many of the text borders, the cover, spine and page art are by Margaret Neilson Armstrong (1867-1944). She, like Sarah Wyman Whitman, was one of the most influential woman in book cover design during the later part of the 1990's and early 20th century. Howes states in his bibliography, U.S. IANA: "Explorations and fur trade operations from Green river to Salt Lake and Walla Walla, 1832-5 including the first account of the trapping expedition over the Sierras to California led by 'Joe' Walker." (Howes, I-85; Langfeld/Blackburn p. 87) This is a superb set and is a splendid example of late Victorian Age book design and art; made even more interesting by the presence of the two, very early examples of dust jackets which are seldom seen on books of this age.Our code number = TB22926
