The Adventures of Captain Bonneville USA in the Rocky Mountains and the Far West Digested From His Journal and Illustrated From Various Other Sources

Pawnee Edition Both volumes of this two volume set are in fine condition in highly decorated white cloth covered boards with beveled edges. The top edges of the text blocks are gilt while the fore and bottom edges are rough cut. Bright gilt text and brown and gilt decorations highlight the spines and front boards. Both volumes are octavos measuring 8 5/8" tall by 6" deep. Volume I contains 339 pages and volume II contains 237 pages. Volume II contains a wonderful, two-color fold-out map within the appendix. Both volumes are illustrated with steel engravings by various artists. The text on each page is bordered by elaborate blue-green designs by the artist noted below. There is a prior owner's name neatly written in ink at the upper corner of the first free end pages. Both volumes are contained within their original, maroon, V cloth, paper backed, dust jackets which are both in very good+ condition. The gilt text stamping on the spine area remains quite bright and readable. As evidenced by her initials on the front board and many of the text borders, the cover, spine and page art are by Margaret Neilson Armstrong (1867-1944). She, like Sarah Wyman Whitman, was one of the most influential woman in book cover design during the later part of the 1990's and early 20th century. Howes states in his bibliography, U.S. IANA: "Explorations and fur trade operations from Green river to Salt Lake and Walla Walla, 1832-5 including the first account of the trapping expedition over the Sierras to California led by 'Joe' Walker." (Howes, I-85; Langfeld/Blackburn p. 87) This is a superb set and is a splendid example of late Victorian Age book design and art; made even more interesting by the presence of the two, very early examples of dust jackets which are seldom seen on books of this age.Our code number = TB22926

The Workman's Foe, A New and Original Dramatic Sketch in One Act [bound in with] Paul the Rebel, A New and Original Dramatic Sketch in One Act

Watts & Co London: Watts & Co, [1898?]. Very Good. Rare. No original copies in WorldCat, one of two known copies - the other is in the James Ellis collection of Victorian drama. A Presentation Copy, inscribed "To Joseph Fay from his old friend Arthur B Moss 25 June 98."The Workman's Foe concerns a man who succeeds in becoming a manager in a large firm and then turning upon the workmen who helped him to climb the ladder, making their lives unendurable. Paul the Rebel is the story of a would-be anarchist whose mission is to blow up a bank. He ends up being blown up by his own bomb. Original wrappers bound in brown cloth with titles and author in gilt to cover. Water staining on pastedowns and free endpapers, partially affecting the inscription. Some pages loose, and paper has browned. Cloth binding slightly rubbed and worn, but an extraordinary survival story - radical plays by a working-class author printed in extremely perishable form. According to press notices reprinted on the original paper wrappers bound in, both plays were actually performed in local theaters in London. Very good condition given the fragility of the items. Workman's Foe: 16 pages; Paul the Rebel: 14 pages. Press notices unpaginated. DRA/013113.

17 Abb., XII, 199 S. Marmor-Pappband im Stil der Zeit. Erste deutsche Ausgabe und erste Übersetzung überhaupt.- Dibner, Heralds of Science 135; Waller 7257; Fischer 1183; Heirs of Hippocrates 2129: "The work of the Russian physiologist Pavlov ind the field of physiology of digestion led to his beeing awarded the Nobel prize for medicine in 1904. His demonstration of conditioned reflexes and automatic responses in dogs had consequences not only for medicine, but for political practices, the sociological sciences, and psychological as well. The first edition in German is the first translation of this classic work on digestive glands, published in Russia the year before." - Tadellos erhalten.         Drawings By Thur De Thulstrup and Others

E.R. Herrick & Co. New York: E.R. Herrick & Co., 1898. 22 plates, 36 x 52 cm. Each of the twenty-two color lithographs are in pristine condition. The binding is tight. Bror Thure Thulstrup (1848-1930) served in Sweden in the Svea Artillery Regiment then joined the foreign legion. He arrived in New York in 1974 to do illustrations for the Graphic and Harper's Weekly. This work became one of the finest not only for his vivid contrasts of the New York Upper Class with various elements of the lower class but also the war between the sexes. The rich colors of the men in formal dress and parties, card games etc are also matched with those from their counterparts in the Bowery and similar card games in the south of African Americans which while richly drawn cannot escape the charicature that was rooted in the white mind. The book is remarkably fine with each plate perfect with the original 1/4 cloth binding over pictorial boards. An uncommon item..

New York & London: Harper & Brothers 1898. New York & London: Harper & Brothers, 1898.. Oblong small quarto. Cloth backed pictorial paper boards. Illustrated throughout. Edges and fore-tips shelfworn and bumped, endsheets a bit foxed, boards a bit dust darkened, but a good copy of a fragile book. First edition. Loosely-inserted is an autograph letter, signed ("Frost") from the artist, 3pp, 8vo, on the blue printed stationery of Convent, Morris County, New Jersey, 2 May, 1898. To "Frank," inviting him to play golf at the Morris County course, and to view some art on which Frost is currently employed: "I am at work on some golf caricatures that I would like to have you see, but I wouldn't let you see unless you saw them in my studio: I think they are pretty good and I see a good scheme [?] in them. . . ." Further, Frost refers to his own prowess as a golfer (" . . . I can't hit a balloon yet; played Saturday and today and am pretty rank...") and thanks his correspondent for allowing him to send the "Bicycle drawing" to him, adding: "I feel sure any idea you have for a book is a good idea, and I can almost say I am ready to go with [?] it." Beneath his signature, Frost has drawn a caricature of himself playing golf, captioned: "This is the way the ball looks so I hit it on its top." Letter slightly soiled and worn; edges browned; some slight marking on verso, else very good. The recipient of this letter may be the author, Frank R. Stockton, whose property in Morristown, New Jersey, "The Holt," adjoined Frost's own property at Convent Station. Frost illustrated a number of Stockton's stories, and was one of the latter's few intimate friends. REED, p.158.

New York: William R. Jenkins, 1898 The True First American Edition. A near fine example of this rare [French Language] American publication bound in decorated green cloth over boards. 8vo. [1-6], 7-239 pages preceding the Doubleday English edition. With author & title credits in highly decorative gold lettering on the upper cover above an illustrated black stamped image of Cyrano gazing upward: author, title and publisher credit across the backstrip, teg. fore-edge uncut. With 9 black & white plates. In a sound binding, with extremities only very lightly rubbed. A very nice copy. Rare. Cyrano was first published [1898] by Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle in Paris. In the United States it was published first in French in the same year by the William R. Jenkins Company & then in a much more broadly distributed English version by the firm of Doubleday, McClure which is most often called erroneously the first US edition. In the same year, Heinemann published the 1st UK edition. Both English language editions are preceded by the sparse Jenkins French printing; the French [American] copies being very far outnumbered by the later English language ones. This is the true First American Printing of Cyrano, in the very nice decorated original binding. Rostand's highlight & basis for two screen efforts; The Jose Ferrer 1950's original & the 1990 remake starring Gerard Depardieu. Ferrer won Best Actor Academy award for his portrayal of Cyrano. The 1990 film was up for five awards, including Oscar nominations for Depardieu & for the Best Foreign Film.. 1st Edition.

Kaltenleutgeben near Vienna. 7 May 1898. " Kaltenleutgeben, near Vienna." 7 May 1898.. 3 1/3 pages, in ink, on rectos and versos of two octavo lettersheets. Modest tanning, old folds from mailing, slightly weak at one fold, one word slightly smudged below baseline, otherwise very good. To "Dear Gilder," in the recipient's role as editor of CENTURY MAGAZINE: "If I want more, 'say so.' A young person would walk into that trap, imagining it a promise, whereas it has only the gilded outside aspect of one ... But I am not a young person: I have had it & cannot catch it again. So I, who am the descendant of the horse- beck's daughter, say not a single word, but am amply content with the addition of that great compliment wherein you tell me it is the highest price you have ever paid to anybody for anything. I have had that compliment paid to me three or four times in my life, & in every case there was something upliftingly splendid about the feel of it. I think it must be the way a pirate or tiger feels when he has made a 'record' ... I still remember the first two instances ... One was 31 years ago, when a now forgotten London magazine went down into its treasury & paid me $12.50 per mag. page for a 4-page article; the other was 22 years ago when the Atlantic paid me $18 per mag page for a series of articles. To be conscientiously accurate, that wasn't the highest the Atlantic had ever paid for prose - it had paid the same rate to Holmes for the 'Autocrat.' Still, as you will easily understand, the 'feel' was there: because to be rated with Oliver Wendell was itself a 'record.' In those days the author hadn't his today's chance to scrape the fat off'n an editor, but in those days there wasn't any fat on him - he hadn't either circulation or advertisements ...." Signed "Yours sincerely Mark [flourish]."

London: William Heinemann, 1898. Archivally double-matted and framed in 1 inch black Eastlake-style moulding with conservation glass. Sized to 15.5 x 17.75 inches. First printing Fine A Fine original color-printed lithograph. Quarto (9.75 x 12.25). Archivally double-matted and framed in 1 inch black Eastlake-style moulding with conservation glass. Sized to 15.5 x 17.75 inches. William Nicholson (British 1872-1949) gained notoriety as a beloved portrayer of British Victorian culture with his dignified caricatures of both the pillars of society and the lay folk. His woodcut portraits of Queen Victoria, James McNeill Whistler, and Rudyard Kipling, from which this print was inspired, were both traditional yet innovative. Referencing the subculture of the late 19th Century Parisian Cafe society through the poster advertisements, and the work of Toulouse-Lautrec, Nicholson's mid-tonal compositions honored the void as well as the light. His revolutionary technique of carving away wide sections of block introduced a modern perspective to the traditional art of portraiture, caricature and book illustration.
