Antar. Poème Héroique Arabe des Temps Antéislamiques

Paris: H. Piazza et Cie, 1898. L?édition d?Art. Full binding by Canape (full morocco in burnt orange, cream, olivegreen, purple and brown, heavy gilt, raised bands on spine, inner dentelles, moirée silk doublures, all edges gilt) full morocco with marbled paper chemise, suède lined box. Original wrappers bound in. Georges Canape (1864-1940) succeeded his father J. Canape, in 1894. Like many of his contemporaries, he soon adopted a restrained version of the Art Nouveau esthetic popularized by Marius-Michel. Canape?s own compositions often consisted of floral emblems within rather formal borders. At the annual Paris Salons, he offered the new style, blended with classical revival bindings, all executed with superb technical precision. Fine. Folio. Four volumes: two volumes Antar, two on Dinét Illustrated in colour by E. Dinet One of 25 copies (of a total edition of 300) on grand velin d?Arches paper Special edition with an additional (to the coloured ones) suite of plates in black on china paper (This suite separately bound). An absolutely stunning book. The illustrations by Etienne Dinet (1861 - 1929) bring to life the legend of Antar, the triumph of good over evil. Dinet was one of the foremost French orientalist painters of his time, and was highly regarded during his life time. Dinet spent a large part of his life in Morocco, and he also converted to Islam. He portrayed the people of the desert and their culture as few artists have been able to do. To quote the publishers: ?All of these epic illustrations were drawn by him (Dinet) in nature amongst the people of the Saharas, during the many long years he spent with them, in the mysterious solitude of this region where he has seen the life of the Arabs of the Desert, whose strange and wild poetry he has brought to us with his rare talent. Fights, dances, razzias, caravans, celebrations, hunts, etc., etc., all the parts in the life of the Nomadic Arabs, one will find amongst the compositions which accompany the text of each page of Antar .

Auf Schneeschuhen durch Grönland., Zwei Bände. Autorisierte deutsche Übersetzung von M. Mann.

Hamburg: Verlagsanstalt und Druckerei Actien-Gesellschaft (vormals J. F. Richter),, 1898 - 1 Porträt, (IV), 400; IV, 455 (1) Seiten mit zusammen 159 Abbildungen und 4 farbigen mehrfach gefalteten Karten. "Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (* 10. Four Girls at Cottage City

Boston: James H. Earle. 1898. First. First edition, second issue (the earliest obtainable edition -- see below). Gift inscription on the front fly, and a neat horizontal repair near the bottom of the spine, else a fine and fresh copy of a not particularly well-manufactured book. Republished in 1988 by the Oxford University Press, this is an early novel for adolescents about four (racially unidentified) young ladies leaving Providence for a vacation on Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard. The true first edition was originally published (and almost certainly self-published) in 1895 in Providence, Rhode Island under the imprint of The Continental Printing Co. After the successful publication of the author's earlier and anonymously authored novel Megda by James H. Earle, Earle apparently obtained the remaining sheets of the original printing of Four Girls at Cottage City and reissued them with a separately printed cancel title page. The text and collation of the text of the 1895 issue are identical to that of this 1898 issue except for the title leaf, which was completely reset and is typographically inconsistent with the text. Generally considered the sixth novel published by an African-American woman, the identification of the 1895 issue would perhaps move the book up one place. The 1895 issue is known in only one copy, held by the John Hay Library at Brown University. OCLC lists four copies of this 1898 edition. We have seen only one other (physically much inferior) copy of the 1898 issue offered on the market in the past two decades. Our thanks to Richard Nobel of the John Hay Library for his research in identifying and distinguishing the printing priority. .

        Psst...! (Anti-Dreyfus Periodical)

Paris: Rue Garanciere, 1898-1899. Original Wraps. Very Good. A Complete run of the most Inflammatory Anti-Dreyfus Periodical& & (ANTI-DREYFUS) PSST…! Forain, (Jean-Louis) and Caran D'Ache. Complete run of 85 issues. February 5, 1898 through September 16, 1899. Profusely illustrated with photomechanical prints. Paris: Rue Garanciere. In French. Original paper wrappers bound in a marbled folio volume. & & THE MOST CONSISTENT WEEKLY ANTI-DREYFUS PUBLICATION. A Weekly journal created specifically as a rallying point against the Alfred Dreyfus Affair. Psst…! Contains no text, only illustrations and captions from the pens of Forain and Caran D'Ache, principal French caricaturists of their day.& & The Dreyfus Affair was an explosive, pivotal moment in the history of France's Third Republic. For all of her liberte, egalite, fraternite, France was revealed to be rife with the same unfounded bigotry towards Jews as other less enlightened nations.& & Opposing camps of Dreyfusards and anti-Dreyfusards settled in as the long political ordeal raged through, not only, French courtrooms, kitchens and marketplaces but the drawing rooms of the outside world as well. This public interest in the Dreyfus conflagration was a 19th century equivalent to the O.J. Trial! Everyone had an opinion. Psst…! represented the stiletto sharp but badly mislead reiteration of Dreyfus' guilt. This magazine's unswerving aim was clearly based on preserving the respect and power of the French army and not in establishing who really passed military secrets to the German attaché. Widely read during its brief life Psst…! even provoked the creation of another weekly magazine Le Sifflet which sought to maintain Dreyfus' innocence.& & This is propaganda distilled to its purest form, directed at the emotions, without words to complicate the reader's mental clarity. It was this type of literature and its compelling anti-Semitic position which prompted Theodor Herzl's call for a Jewish Homeland, as well as Emile Zola's famous burst of intellectual outrage.&

Paris, 1898; FIRST EDITION, pages 1215-1217, 4to; P. Curie and Mme. Curie and G. Bemont, presentee par M. Becquerel. [Bound with:] Sur le spectre d’une substance radio-active. Note de E. Demarcay.Paris, 1898; FIRST EDITION, page 1218, 4to. Published in: Comptes Rendus Hebdomadiares des Seances del’Academie des Sciences. Paris, 1898, volume 127; original black and white paper covered boards, with printed label on front panel; 4to, 144-209 pp. [second title page] 1180-1302 pp. Minor wear at extremities, otherwise a fine copy of these rare and important works. The Curies discovered radium shortly after their discovery of the radio-active substance polonium, both found in pitchblende (uranium ore). Polonium was so named after Mme. Curie’s native country, Poland. Radium was estimated by Mme. Curie (in 1898) to have a probable atomic weight of 226.2 and was about two million times as radio-active as uranium (Printing and the Mind of Man, 394). Radium has found many uses in medicine and industry. In1903 the Curies and Becquerel were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics; Becquerel’s work was instrumental to the Curies" discoveries. The above paper "Sur le spectre d’une substance radio-active" by Demarcay, confirmed the Curies’ discovery of the presence of radium in pitchblende. Marie (Maria Sklodowska) Curie (1867-1934). Chemist, physicist, Professor at the Sorbonne, discoverer of the elements radium and polonium. Madame Curie succeeded her husband, Pierre Curie, as professor of physics at the Sorbonne in Paris, in 1906, thus becoming the first woman titular professor at Sorbonne. She founded the Radium Institute in Warsaw, in 1913; she visited the United States in 1921 and was presented with a gram of radium-salt by President Warren G. Harding. Madame Curie was the only person to receive the Nobel Prize twice - once in physics,in 1903 and again in chemistry, in 1911. She was nominated for membership in the French Academy of Science in 1911, but was rejected by one vote, because she was a woman. The Curie (unit quantity of radon in radio-active equilibrium with 1 gram of radium) was named in honor of Marie and Pierre Curie. Madame Curie was a pioneer in the use of radio-activity in medicine, i.e. in treating cancer. This brave, brilliant and diligent lady research scientist ultimately gave her life for her work; she died of leukemia, caused by over-exposure to radio-active substances, at Haute Savoie, France, on July 4, 1934.Norman 545..
