Letters from India and China during the Years 1854-1858

London & Aylesbury: Printed for Private Circulation only by Hazell, Watson, and Viney,, 1898. Octavo. Original dark green-blue finely diapered cloth, title gilt to the upper board and spine, black surface paper endpapers. Portrait frontispiece. Compilation of letters to his family, Danvers "a warm and faithful correspondent" (Riddick) gives an excellent account of his services at "various posts in Upper India", where he "demonstrated his skills as a capable officer, sportsman and linguist". He was in the relief column with Outram and Havelock, "offers good descriptions of street fighting during Havelock's relief" of Lucknow (Sorsky). He was wounded and evacuated to Cawnpore, from where he was posted to the Chinese Expedition and died when "accidentally shot on parade".

Autographed Typed Letter from Susan B. Anthony on the Stationery of the National American Woman Suffrage Association to Helen Pillsbury Cogswell, the daughter of Pillsbury Cogswell. Dated 19 December 1898. Includes the letter's envelope

Rochester, NY, 1898. Letter. Near Fine. Letter. One page letter, signed "Susan B. Anthony". Letter and envelope are both in very nice shape. The letter has only some light edge wear, and there is some slight postal soiling to the envelope. In this letter, Anthony informs Cogswell that she has just received "some of the huge volumes of my biography" and notes that she will be dispatching a set to her shortly, "in memory of your dear father, mother and husband, and recognition of your own splendid services to them and to the world." She goes on to note that as they worked together on the book, her biographer, Mrs. Ida Husted Harper, would frequently say, "I do hope Mr. Pillsbury will live to read what I have said about him." Unfortunately, Parker Pillsbury died before the first two volumes of Anthony's biography were completed. Years before, Pillsbury, Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton had formed what Anthony previously referred to as "the Revolutionary trio" for their long-time and very close association working on the entwined causes of abolition and suffrage which they began as Garrisonians in the 1850s. Later in 1868, bitter and furious with the traditional abolitionists over their refusal to include women's suffrage in what would become the Fifteenth Amendment-something that Stanton described as "stand[ing] aside and see[ing] 'Sambo' walk into the kingdom [of civil rights] first"-the trio began publishing a weekly periodical, Revolution, which forcefully advocated for women's suffrage as well as addressed a number of related issues including birth control, divorce, prostitution, and abortion (which, probably to the surprise of many today, they regarded as infanticide). Pillsbury remained active in the suffrage movement until his death in 1898 at age 88. Anthony concludes her letter with an invitation to Cogswell for "a whole week's or month's visit.

        COLONEL THORNDYKE'S SECRET

1898 - London: Chatto & Windus, 1898. 32 pp ads dated Jan 1898. Original salmon cloth decorated in black. First Edition, which consisted of 2000 copies (only some of which have the ads in the first state, January 1898, as in this copy). Like Henty's previous books published as three-deckers by Chatto & Windus, this was a novel meant for adults; though C&W was delighted to see that this book was just as long as his three-deckers, it was too late to be published as such (as the three decker format had finally died in 1894).~This is a fine copy, with virtually none of the cover soil that typically afflicts such light-colored cloth. Like Henty's other books for adults, this one is quite scarce, especially in this condition. Newbolt 79.1. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Malay Archipelago: the Land of the Orang-Utan and the Bird of Paradise. A Narrative of Travel, with Studies of Man and Nature. [Tenth Edition]. REMARKABLY BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY

Macmillan, 1898. 8vo., Tenth Edition, with frontispiece (original tissue guard present), title-vignette, 7 plates, very numerous illustrations and maps (a number full-page) in the text, a folding coloured map and a folding map coloured in outline, top lightly dust-soiled, minimal spotting to fore-edge; green cloth, gilt back, black endpapers, upper hinge paper parted (but binding entirely sound), a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean, fresh copy. With contemporary prize bookplate on front paste-down. The most celebrated work, dedicated appropriately to Darwin, by the co-discoverer of the process of evolution through natural selection. The tenth edition, first published in 1890, is the definitive text, for in it Wallace incorporates the latest results of researches by subsequent travellers to the region and adds footnotes wherever his original facts or conclusions are modified by later discoveries. His well-known appendix on the crania and the languages of man in the archipelago includes a glossary of one hundred and seventeen words in thirty-three languages of the region. A LOVELY COPY OF A KEY WORK IN THE LITERATURE OF EVOLUTION. . Catalogs: natural history: darwin & evolution.

        THE WAR OF THE WORLDS

1898. [invasion of the Martians!] London: William Heinemann, 1898. 16 pp ads dated Autumn 1897. Original grey cloth. First Edition of Wells's classic science fiction tale of the invasion of the Martians, immortalized forty years later in Orson Welles's Hallowe'en radio broadcast. Wells (spurred on by his brother Frank, to whom this book is dedicated) had always been fascinated by the idea of life on Mars (he had brought up the idea in his HONOURS PHYSIOGRAPHY in 1893). He wrote the book while living in Woking, near London, and the area behind his house was the scene of the first confrontation with the invaders. The book was an immediate success, helped no doubt by the population's perception of the growing threat of invasion by the powers gathering strength across the English Channel.~THE WAR OF THE WORLDS was finally produced as a movie in 1953 (the rights had been bought back in the 1920s); it featured a low-budget cast but "no expense was spared in getting the right special effects" [Wykes]. More recently, Steven Spielberg filmed the tale in 2005.~This copy has the 16-page ad catalogue dated Autumn 1897 -- the first of two ad catalogues cited by Currey (the other is a 32-page undated catalogue headed by ILLUMINATION); we have seen a third, 32 pages headed by THE NIGGER OF THE NARCISSUS, and some copies have no ads at all. Since the other two ad catalogues list as "the latest fiction" books published in mid-to-late 1898, this 1897 ad catalogue is presumably the earliest. Condition is very good-plus (there is minor cover soil, but very little actual wear; inside, a few of the gatherings stand slightly proud, and there is some primarily-marginal foxing on most leaves). This book is increasingly difficult to find in desirable condition. Wells Soc. 14; Hammond B5; Currey p. 526.

Drawings By Thur De Thulstrup and Others

E.R. Herrick & Co., New York 1898 - 22 plates, 36 x 52 cm. Each of the twenty-two color lithographs are in pristine condition. The binding is tight. Bror Thure Thulstrup (1848-1930) served in Sweden in the Svea Artillery Regiment then joined the foreign legion. He arrived in New York in 1974 to do illustrations for the Graphic and Harper's Weekly. This work became one of the finest not only for his vivid contrasts of the New York Upper Class with various elements of the lower class but also the war between the sexes. The rich colors of the men in formal dress and parties, card games etc are also matched with those from their counterparts in the Bowery and similar card games in the south of African Americans which while richly drawn cannot escape the charicature that was rooted in the white mind. The book is remarkably fine with each plate perfect with the original 1/4 cloth binding over pictorial boards. An uncommon item.

Five Years in Siam. From 1891 to 1896

London: John Murray, 1898. Two volumes, with 15 full-page plates, nine maps (four folding) and numerous illustrations in the text; foxing to endpapers otherwise a good set in the original decorated cloth. An important book on late-nineteenth-century Thailand. Smyth spent some years in Thailand as director of the Department of Mines, and his well-illustrated account of the country, then under the rule of King Chulalongkorn, describes the prosperous last years free of colonial controls. 'Thailand presented a singular contrast to the rest of Southeast Asia in the late nineteenth century. Thai leaders followed policies that revealed a remarkable capacity to gain the greatest benefit from the new and intrusive element of European power' (Osborne, Southeast Asia). Within only a few years Thailand was to lose part of its country to French colonial aspirations, and in 1909 it lost four Malay states to the British.

You cannot force writers like early peas - writing is about life. And all life can't be in a college - " Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943), born July 22, 1898, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; died March 13, 1943; American author, poet, short story writer and novelist.         On the eve of his inauguration as Governor of New York, Theodore Roosevelt declares, "I think I am proudest of having been Colonel of the Rough Riders"<br>

Superb content Typed Letter Signed "Theodore Roosevelt", as Governor-elect, 1 page, 8.5" x 11", Oyster Bay, December 28, 1898 with several autograph emendations, to William Laird Clowes (1856-1905) asking when his chapter on the War of 1812 would appear in a forthcoming volume and reflecting on his election as governor in respect to his service with the Rough Riders. Expected folds, slight partial separation at horizontal fold repaired on verso, glue remnants on verso show through at bottom margin not affecting text and can be easily matted out, else very good. Roosevelt writes, in full: "I understand your third volume is very nearly out. Pardon my troubling you, but have you an idea when the fourth will be issued, and will it contain my chapters? The reason for this anxiety, as you know, is that I cannot help hoping I can get my account of the War of 1812 out ahead of Mahan's, for, of course, whatever he writes will utterly cast into the shade of what I write. Inner front hinge cracked, and some cracking to the inner rear hinge, small chip and crease to front end paper, but in general a clean and very good copy. Atlantis sinks into the sea, and Noah and his family survive to colonize Central America. See the catalog of the Stuart Teitler Collection of Lost Race Fiction, page 204. Bleiler: SF: The Early Years, 2062. An exceedingly rare book, until now known in only a single copy (the Library of Congress copy is missing). This was one of the rare items on Stuart Teitler&#39;s notorious want list; after seeking it for decades, Stuart finally obtained a copy in the early 1990s. The copy from his collection, inscribed from the author to his mother, is now in the Charvat Collection of American Fiction at OSU. The copy offered here is the only other to turn up, so far as we can determine.

The American Woods. Exhibited By Actual Specimens.

Lowville, N.Y. 1898 - Text in original wrappers, samples on card mounts unbound as issued, each text volume and accompanying samples loose within original green cloth covers, the covers in matching original cloth slipcases, with metal catches and bosses to covers, contained in a single modern green cloth box Provenance: Medford, Mass. Public Library (stamps, labels, perforation mark) One of the greatest American works on trees and woods, a labor of love, and of the greatest rarity in complete sets This remarkable work was the lifetime achievement of Romeyn B. Hough, who devoted himself to the study of American trees, and who is best known for his Handbook of Trees of the Northern States and Canada , long a standard reference work in American dendrology. In this work, Hough sought to describe the woods found in America, with a detailed description in an accompanying pamphlet, and with thin cross-sections of actual woods mounted and labeled in accompanying stiff cardboard mounts. These provide a unique record of American wood types, arranged geographically. Generally each species is shown with wood cut on traverse section, radial section, and tangential section. The samples are so thin as to be easily translucent. The age of these specimens gives them tremendous importance from an ecological standpoint, as well as their great interest to students of American furniture and woodcrafts. The trees available to Hough at the time make such an endeavor impossible to contemplate today. Parts I-IV cover New York and adjacent states, part V covers Florida, parts VI-X describe the Pacific Slope, parts XI-XII cover the Atlantic states, and part XIII southern Florida. Part XIV contained a continuation of the work on the trees of Florida with text by Marjorie Hough, using specimens and notes prepared by her father before his death in 1924. Hough explained the unique nature of the work thus: it is `illustrated by actual specimens, and being in this way an exhibition of nature itself it possesses a peculiar and great interest never found in a press-printed book. The specimens are.about 2 x 5 in. in size, and sufficiently thin to admit of examination in transmitted light.Looked at in reflected light they appear as in the board or log. These specimens are mounted in durable frame-like Bristol-board pages, with black waterproofed surfaces.and each bears printed in gilt-bronze the technical name of the species and its English, German, French and Spanish names. The pages are separable.and are accompanied with a full text.giving information as to the uses and physical properties of the woods, and distributions, habits of growth, botanical characters, habitats, medicinal properties, etc,., of the trees. The woods used for the specimens are personally collected by the author? and are sectioned and prepared by a process of his own device'. Complete sets of this work are very rare. The volumes were priced at five dollars each, a high price reflecting the work involved in assembling them. Since subscribers came and went over the 25-year period of publication and many only bought the volume or volumes on the areas that interested them. The rarity of complete sets can be judged from the fact that Stafleu and Cowan record the work as being complete in 6 volumes. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 341. Volumes I-II only (of 14), 8vo portfolios. Plates and illustrations. 159 samples of wood in 53 card mounts, each wafer thin transverse, radial and tangential sections illustrating 53 species.         Quatrième Centenaire de la Découverte de la Route océanique de l&#39;Inde (1498-1898)

Moulins: Imprimerie Bourbonnaise, 1898. Large octavo, frontispiece portrait, some light offsetting to title, original printed wrappers bound in; a very good copy in a lavish presentation binding of mauve calf with red morocco inlay, moiré silk endpapers, both boards with gilt figures, the front board with deeply embossed gilt coat of arms and gilt presentation note, spine with double crimson morocco labels. Beautifully bound presentation copy of this study of Vasco da Gama. Published in honour of the 400th anniversary of da Gama&#39;s first voyage, this work includes observations on two significant accounts of the voyage, the first by Camoens, the second that of a "matelot portugais". The work was prepared after a meeting of the so-called "Comité Vasco de Gama", whose members had met at l&#39;Hotel de Ville du Moulins, and who were keen to promote better research and better understanding between France and Portugal. The work, commissioned by Henri Olivier, vice-president of the Vasco da Gama society, is dedicated to the King and Queen of Portugal and the Algarves: hence, this is a particularly attractive copy, as it has a presentation binding to the royal couple, with the "profond respect" of Olivier. Copies are listed at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and some European libraries, but the work does not appear to be held in any Australian collection.

The marbled boards are edgeworn with rubbed points, the spine leather is heavily rubbed to the hinges and sunned to the main body of the spine. The spine is rubbed, most heavily to the raised bands and the crown where there is some loss. The content is lightly toned with some movement in the gatherings but no structural problems. . Good. 1898.

Spinifex and Sand: a Narrative of Five Years&#39; Pioneering and Exploration in Western Australia

London: C. Arthur Pearson Limited, 1898. Octavo, with illustrations and folding maps (two in a rear endpocket); an unusually fine, tight copy in the original pictorial cloth, top edge gilt; bookplate of Hugh Gurney Barclay. A classic of inland exploration. An excellent copy of the first edition in its handsome original nineteenth-century binding. One of the most enthralling works of inland exploration, Carnegie&#39;s book is illustrated throughout with printed photographic images and folding maps. Travelling with Lord Percy Douglas, Carnegie was an enthusiastic prospector on the Western Australian goldfields. Lord Douglas returned to England to raise the finance for Carnegie&#39;s first, 90-day, expedition of 1894 in which he covered approximately eight hundred and fifty miles of largely unexplored territory around Hampton Plains, Victoria Springs, Mount Shenton and Mount Ida. His subsequent 1896-7 expedition was to establish the nature of the country between the southern goldfields and the Kimberleys in the north, and between the east-west routes taken by Warburton and Forrest in 1874. Carnegie was awarded the Gill Memorial medal by the Royal Geographical Society in London for his exceptional work in one of Australia&#39;s most inhospitable wildernesses.

        THE MOTOGRAPH MOVING PICTURE BOOK.

London, Bliss, Sands & Co., 1898.FIRST COLOURED ENGLISH EDITION 1898, (Preface states "New edition in colours"), 4to, 300 x 235 mm, 11¾ x 9 inches, cloth backed boards with large coloured illustration to upper cover specially commissioned from Toulouse Lautrec by the original French publishers (indoor scene, 2 women, 1 apparently playing with this book, large dog in foreground, man with pipe walking into room, cat and cockatoo). 23 full page coloured illustrations, attributed on title page to F.J. Vernay, Yorick etc., printed one side only. Most illustrations are very interesting: Water Mill, Serpentine Dancer, Harlequin, Traction Engine, Mortar Mill, Steamboat, Volcano, Scissors Grinder, Life Boat, The Cat and the Cherub (little black boy crying in bath - tub watched by cat), House on Fire etc., (3 are geometric). The book was supplied with a 'transparency' (rectangular sheet of thin clear plastic printed with horizontal lines, mounted in a card frame, housed in pocket inside front cover) which when moved as indicated over the pictures, produced an illusion of movement. Expertly rebacked in red cloth matching original, corners slightly worn, showing cardboard at tips, covers slightly dusty - looking, a few small stains and marks to lower cover, a few tiny scrapes to upper cover next to spine, endpapers lightly browned, tiny pale stain to upper inner edge of first few pages, otherwise contents clean. A very good copy with original transparency but this is lacking its cardboard frame. This is an expanded edition of the uncoloured version published the same year without the Toulouse Lautrec cover and with only 13 illustrations. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

Law Publishers, 1898-99. Nine volumes. Quarto (7-1/2" x 10-1/2"). Original cloth, black-stamped titles to spine. Moderate shelfwear and soiling, most hinges starting or cracked, internally clean. "Since the consolidation of the Statutes in 1890, the additions to the Statute Roll have been as numerous and important as they have been complicated, irritating, and perplexing. When it is considered that nearly five hundred Statutes have been passed, a very large number of them affecting the existing laws, and that these new Acts occupy ten sessional volumes, and necessitate reference throughout, I feel that no apology is needed [for this work, which is modeled] on Chitty&#39;s Statutes of Practical Utility.": Volume I Preface [iii].
