London, Bliss, Sands & Co., 1898.FIRST COLOURED ENGLISH EDITION 1898, (Preface states "New edition in colours"), 4to, 300 x 235 mm, 11¾ x 9 inches, cloth backed boards with large coloured illustration to upper cover specially commissioned from Toulouse Lautrec by the original French publishers (indoor scene, 2 women, 1 apparently playing with this book, large dog in foreground, man with pipe walking into room, cat and cockatoo). 23 full page coloured illustrations, attributed on title page to F.J. Vernay, Yorick etc., printed one side only. Most illustrations are very interesting: Water Mill, Serpentine Dancer, Harlequin, Traction Engine, Mortar Mill, Steamboat, Volcano, Scissors Grinder, Life Boat, The Cat and the Cherub (little black boy crying in bath - tub watched by cat), House on Fire etc., (3 are geometric). The book was supplied with a 'transparency' (rectangular sheet of thin clear plastic printed with horizontal lines, mounted in a card frame, housed in pocket inside front cover) which when moved as indicated over the pictures, produced an illusion of movement. Expertly rebacked in red cloth matching original, corners slightly worn, showing cardboard at tips, covers slightly dusty - looking, a few small stains and marks to lower cover, a few tiny scrapes to upper cover next to spine, endpapers lightly browned, tiny pale stain to upper inner edge of first few pages, otherwise contents clean. A very good copy with original transparency but this is lacking its cardboard frame. This is an expanded edition of the uncoloured version published the same year without the Toulouse Lautrec cover and with only 13 illustrations. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

"Since the consolidation of the Statutes in 1890, the additions to the Statute Roll have been as numerous and important as they have been complicated, irritating, and perplexing. When it is considered that nearly five hundred Statutes have been passed, a very large number of them affecting the existing laws, and that these new Acts occupy ten sessional volumes, and necessitate reference throughout, I feel that no apology is needed [for this work, which is modeled] on Chitty's Statutes of Practical Utility.": Volume I Preface [iii].

First Edition. Three-quarter morocco. Near fine. First Edition. Three-quarter morocco. 8vo (252 × 165 mm), pp. 55, [1, blank]; one folding engraved plate printed in black and red; pp. 46-55 containing an appendix with 9 printed tables; text crisp, slightly toned; ink inscription to half-title; bound in three-quarter morocco over pebble grained blue cloth boards, corners slightly bumped, else near fine. Extremly rare original offprint from the Annales des ponts et chaussées, 4, 1897, inscribed by the author to William Cawthorne Unwin (1838-1933), then professor of civil and mechanical engineering at the City and Guilds College.'The son of a professor at Nancy, Bazin [1829-1917] attended the Polytechnique and entered the Corps des Ponts et Chausées in 1848. He was sent to Dijon in 1854, where he met Darcy, who assigned him to hydraulic experiments until 1863. He was engineer-in-chief from 1875, when he took overall responsibility for the canal de Bourgogne, becoming inspector general of the corps in 1886 and sitting on its general council. He was also a corresponding member of the Académie from 1900 and a non-resident member from 1913.'An innovator and experimenter of the first order in his field, for half a century no course in applied mathematics was taught either in France or abroad, which did not contain his formulas. He discovered and explained the fact that in open channels the maximum speed of the current often occurs below the surface of the water. He also explained the action of tide in a river and explained the phenomenon known as mascaret (tidal wave in an estuary).' (Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 26)The work offered here presents the results of Bazin's long studies in open-channel flow begun in 1865. His '1865 treatise on open-channel flow contained a wealth of new information, presented in a lucid style completely at variance with his notoriously timid manner of speaking. The tests had been conducted in canals of cement, wood, brick, gravel, and rock, with rectangular, trapezoidal, and semi-circular cross sections. For conditions of uniform flow it was known that - as in Darcy's pipe tests - the resistance depended not only upon the type of boundary but also upon the relative size of cross-section. In fact, whereas the Prony formula indicated that RS = (a + b/V) V2according to the Darcy-Bazin data this had to have the form RS = (a + b/R) V2which, with variation in the two coefficiants according to boundary material, gave results ranging from half to twice those of Prony's accepted formula.' (Rouse & Ince, History of hydraulics, pp. 173-174)Provenance: William Cawthorne Unwin (1838-1933) 'After receiving a bachelor degree, Unwin became professor of engineering at the Central Technical College, London (1884-1904). In 1868 he became an instructor at the Royal School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Kensington (1872), later professor of hydraulic engineering at the Royal Indian Engineering College.' (Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 332)See Rouse & Ince, History of hydraulics, pp. 172-179.Not in Bibliotheca Mechanica; the European Library shows one copy in the BN Paris; OCLC adds Iowa University.

        Complications Sentimentales

Paris - Alphonse Lemerre, 1898. Paris - Alphonse Lemerre, 1898 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A volume of short stories from the French novelist and critic, Paul Bourget, written in French. Binder's label of Auguste Fonatine to verso of front free-endpaper. Bourget's reputation as a novelist is assured in some academic and intellectual circles but while they were widely popular in his time, his novels have long been largely forgotten by the general reading public. Impressed by the art of Henry Beyle (Stendhal), he struck out on a new course at a moment when the realist school was the vogue in French fiction. With Bourget, observation was mainly directed to the human character. At first his purpose seemed to be purely artistic, but when Le Disciple appeared, in 1889, the preface to that story revealed his moral enthusiasm. After that, he varied between his earlier and his later manner, but his work in general was more seriously conceived. He painted the intricate emotions of women, whether wronged, erring or actually vicious; and he described the ideas, passions and failures of the young men of France. Condition: In a half-leather Morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally smartwith just someslight rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. Armorial prize plate to the front pastedown. The pages are age-toned, but generally clean with some light spotting to the first and last few pages. Overall: VERY GOOD..

The List of the Benefactors and Annual Subscribers with the ANNUAL REPORTS, from AUGUST 1846 until June 1900, inclusive.

      - Each report comprises 4 pages, folio, with a Supplementary leaf Medical Report for the year 1898. In cloth-backed marbled boards, rubbed and worn at the corners, the stitching broken at one point and a few leaves coming loose, the text corners a little worn and the fore-edges nicked and occasionally chipped in the margin, the Report for 1888 torn along the centre of both leaves without loss, one leaf with a piece lost from the top margin not affecting the text, occasional marginal damp-staining, some ink annotation. *The North Devon Infirmary, a charitable trust, was established in 1828 in Barnstaple. It was replaced by a modern hospital in the 1980s. The Reports list all the benefactors and subscribers, in order of generosity, give the names of the medical roll, provide accounts of the AGMs and the secretary's Reports, list expenditure and income, the Resident Medical Officer's Report, and detail the motions of thanks to all who helped during the year. In all, the Reports are a detailed and vital historical source for the development of the local, voluntary hospital system in England. However, they are even more useful when dovetailed with other sources. For example, the Secretary's Report for the first year here, 1846, states - 'We regret to find that the affairs of the Institution are not in so satisfactory a state as the Report at the last General Meeting induce the Subscribers to infer. In the absence of a sufficient supervision by the late Auditor, considerable laxity appears to have occurred both in the collection of the income of the Institution and the payment of its expenditure; the result of which is, that large arrears of subscriptions have been suffered to accumulate, and a serious amount in trademen's bills, with which the accounts had been debited, remain unpaid.' This veiled statement is given clarity by the account in the same year in the North Devon Journal, that the Secretary and House Surgeon of the North Devon Infirmary, J.Knox, commited suicide with cyanide on the day his accounts were to be examined. In 1846, the Consulting Physician was Dr. Britton, the Physician was Dr. Richard Budd, the Surgeons were Mr. Curry and Mr. T. S. Law, the House Surgeon and Apothecary was Mr. Morgan, and the Surgeon-Dentist was Mr. Borlase. In 1856, the post of Consulting Physician appears to have been eliminated and Richard Budd F.R.C.P. [1809-1896] was made the senior physician, retaining this post until his death. Interestingly, he became the most generous of all patrons in 1883, donating an annual £400 until he died in 1896. His successors were Drs. C. H. Gamble and J. Harper. Each Report also gives a brief inventory of patient turn-over; overall, by the year 1900, the number of in-patients since the foundation in 1828, was recorded as 34,309 - the number of out-patients, 105,208. This is in effect the dedication copy, from the introduction, "The Little lady is four years old, going on five, and is found of stories, this makes her and the story teller good friends." Scarce volume containing animal stories for children. The title was so popular, Bigelow wrote a series of "Hollow Tree" stories. A wonderful assocation copy of this classic American children's book.

        Gastrophotography [cover title].

      - New York: Gastro-Photor Laboratories, [1930s]. Oblong small folio. (10 x 13 inches). Album containing 76 silver print photographs, comprising 4 of the Gastro-Photor gastric camera, and 72 stereo views of the interior of the stomach (mounted 8 per page), 14 typed notes or captions (all but one tipped to the facing pages, one tipped below), all mounted recto and verso on 13 leaves of black paper. Contemporary black pebbled cloth boards, lettered on the upper cover. Possibly unique album of early photographs of the human stomach, intended as a marketing tool for the Gastro-Photor: among the earliest endocscopic imaging devices. While efforts to photograph the interior of the stomach began in the 1890s and the first gastric camera was developed in 1898, the first widely used device for this purpose was the Gastro-Photor, based on a prototype introduced in 1929 by the Viennese physicians Otto Porges and Max Josef Heilpern in collaboration with the engineer Franz Gerhard Back. This was a miniature round pinhole camera with multiple apertures and a tungsten lamp, appended to a stomach tube, capable of taking 8 stereo pictures at a time. Its 360° field of view was intended to compensate for the operator's lack of visual control in positioning the camera. The album offered here was probably created for marketing or sales purposes. In addition to the numerous sample photographs, it contains a description of the Gastro-Photor and its use, and positive quotes about it from medical journals dated 1930 to 1936.         Die Arbeit der Verdauungsdrüsen. Vorlesungen. Autorisierte Übersetzung aus dem Russischen von Dr. A. Walther. Mit einem Vorwort und Zusätzen des Verfassers.

Wiesbaden, Verlag von J. F. Bergmann, 1898.. 4°. XII, 199 (1) S., HLdr. d. Zt. a. 4 Bünden m. etw. Rückenverg. u. goldgepr. Rückentitel.. Erste dt. Ausgabe. - "This first edition in German is the first translation of this classic work on the digestive glands, published in Russia the year before" (Heirs of Hippocrates). - Einband berieben u. gering bestoßen.
