JOHN BULL'S ADVICE. SEE The Klondyke Nugget!

Birmingham: Moody Bros., [ca. 1898]. - Chromolithographic poster, 20 x 30 inches. Minor soiling and wear, a few small closed tears in the margin. Flyer for local theatre pasted to right side of sheet (in image). Very good. A rare poster for the popular stage play, THE KLONDYKE NUGGET, written and performed by S.F. Cody throughout the British Isles at the end of the 19th century. Samuel Franklin Cody (1867-1913) was a unique figure in late Victorian Anglo-American popular entertainment. Born Samuel Franklin Cowdery, he later changed his surname to capitalize on the fame of Buffalo Bill Cody, even mimicking Buffalo Bill's clothing and facial hair style. Born in Texas, S.F. Cody trained in the Forepaugh Wild West Show, and found much of his fame in England. He is renowned in the history of aviation as the first man to conduct a powered flight in England, and he later developed large kites that were used for artillery spotting during World War I. Cody's life was filled with tall tales (though some of them are perhaps true), including his claim that he prospected for gold in Dawson City during the Klondike Gold Rush. That story set the groundwork for the theatrical play advertised herein, where Cody plays the role of George Exelby; Lela Cody, his (common law) second wife, the part of Rosie; and her son, Edward LeRoy, plays Joe Smith. This poster shows a portly British gent in a Union Jack waistcoat centered in the sheet, endorsing the play by giving a thumbs up. He is surrounded by a varied cast of characters from all nations and ethnicities - a Native American, an Eskimo, an African tribesman, a Scotsman, Uncle Sam, a Chinaman, and an Aussie with a Kangaroo, among others. An ad for "The Theatre, Neath. Near G.W. Station" is pasted to the right side of the sheet, indicating that the play runs three nights only, December 5,6, & 7.

Psychic researcher F.W.H. Myers writes that his wife ?has caught diphtheria ? in visiting some wretched homes ? & has had a very close struggle for life?? ? he died 3 years later, his wife survived him by 36 years

"Autograph Letter Signed ?F W H Myers,? 3.5p, 4.5? x 5?, front & verso on two conjoined sheets. ?Leckhampton House,? Cambridge stationery, January 6, 1898. To Sally. Fine condition. In part, ?Your welcome words & your beautiful bird-pictures came like a glimpse of sunlight with what has been of late a very sad house. My Wife has caught diphtheria, as we believe, in visiting some wretched homes in her work for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, - & has had a very close struggle for life. Antitoxin has, we now trust, saved her; but her exhaustion is still extreme; - She could not read your letter or look at your birds herself ?" But she has been most patient at home, & is as full of love as ever ... All is done that can be done; - by Doctors, & Nurses ... Often I also think of you:- & wonder as to your inward fates, & what may befall that womanly & buoyant heart...?F.W.H. Myers? wife, photographer Eveleen Tennant Myers (1856-1937), survived her illness and lived another 39 years. Myers died on January 17, 1901, in Rome. After his death, many claimed communications from his spirit came from mediums around the world. Irish spiritualist medium, author, and suffragette Geraldine Cummins (1890-1969) claimed that she channeled two books in which Myers describes the afterworld as a resident. The first was published as ?The Road to Immortality? (1933), the second as ?Beyond Human Personality? (1935)."

        The Forest Lovers

London, Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1898. A Romance. Octavo. Original decorated green cloth, blocked in darker green, titles to spine gilt, pages uncut. With the dust jacket. A stunning copy in the slightly dusty dust jacket. First edition, first impression, rare in this condition. The author's first novel, which was published to immediate popular and critical acclaim. Loosely inserted in this copy is a 2-page autograph letter from Hewlett to his literary agent Charles F. Cazenove dated 24 February 1913, remonstrating with him for offering rights for The Forest Lovers "to Kinematograph people" (i.e. film producers) at lower rates than those being offered by Macmillan's agent; also asking him to arrange collection of some books. The letter dates from the earliest days of feature films. Though it was ultimately not filmed, Hewlett's historical novel was attracting attention in the immediate wake of the Famous Players production of Anthony Hope's The Prisoner of Zenda, released the same month, February 1913.

        THE FOREST LOVERS A ROMANCE

London: Macmillan & Co., 1898.. Distinctive green cloth, with overall decorative stamping in darker green, lettered in gilt. Extremities a bit rubbed, bookplate of collector Paul Lemperley and some relevant clippings inserted by him in back, else a fine copy, in a good example of the very scarce printed dust jacket (see below). Half morocco slipcase (a bit corner worn). First edition, first issue, of the author's fourth and best known book, distinguished by the presence of the original printed dust jacket. The jacket is somewhat tanned and worn, and was backed with tissue by Lemperly so it is somewhat rippled; there's a closed tear across the lower corner of the rear panel, and a large diagonal chip at the toe of the spine, affecting part of the price and a corner of the publisher's device. It is, nonetheless, not a jacket that is frequently seen. NCBEL IV:601.

Dewey admits the battles for Manila were his "least trying" tasks. "I am not a trained diplomat or lawyer, and many nights I slept not alas, trying to solve some knotty question of international law."

"Letter Signed, ""George Dewey,"" as Admiral commanding the United States Asiatic Squadron, 3 pages, 4.5"" x 7"", Flagship Olympia, Manila, September 1, 1898 to M. A. Jones of the Syracuse Post thanking him for a favorable editorial and a copy of a march composed in his honor and lamenting upon the difficulties he encountered since the successful battles of Manila and Manila Bay. Partial fold separations, vertical fold separation repaired with archival tape, light toning, else very good condition. Dewey writes, in full: ""I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letters of of [sic] July 12, in which you advise me that the Syracuse Post had published a march dedicated to me, a copy of which was enclosed in separate cover, and also an editorial. I shall have the march arranged at once and played by the band of the flagship. I can hardly express to you my thanks for, and appreciation of, the editorial. I have had no form of praise that has given me as much pleasure. Few except yourself, have realized the trying times through which I passed. From May 1 to Aug 13, the least trying of which was the two engagements. I am not a trained diplomat or lawyer, and many nights I slept not alas, trying to solve some knotty question of international law. Thanking you most heartily for your appreciation."" A superb letter mentioning not only the two major battles he fought to secure the Philippines: Manila Bay on May 1, 1898 and the capture of the city of Manila on August 13, but also providing hints at his growing frustration managing the occupation of the former Spanish possession. American diplomats in Asia, hoping that Philippine insurgents could assist the United States in their capture of the Spanish possession, assured the exiled insurrectionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo that the United States would support his country's independence. Several days following the Battle of Manila Bay, Dewey ordered that Aguinaldo be brought from Hong Kong to the Philippines, where he promptly took command of native forces besieging Manila. At first the relationship between Dewey and Aguinaldo was cordial as the they shared common enemy. However when the Americans secretly agreed to allow Spanish forces in Manila surrender to them, rather than to those commanded by Aguinaldo, a rift developed between the erstwhile allies. As it turned out, Washington had no intention recognize Philippine independence, nor did the American diplomats who assured Aguinaldo otherwise have any such authority to do so. Aguinaldo felt betrayed by Dewey who he accused of making similar promises, though Dewey denied this. Later that year, after American and Filipino forces had completely eradiated the Spanish presence on the islands, President McKinley issued a proclamation declaring the Philippines ceded to the United States. Aguinaldo considered the document tantamount to a declaration of war. On January 1, 1899 Aguinaldo declared the Philippines an independent republic and on February 4 the first shots were fired against American troops in the Second battle of Manila and the Philippine-American War. Fortunately for Dewey, he was able to return to the United States where he received a hero's welcome including a two-day parade in New York City. He may very well have heard the march ""Admiral Dewey"" composed by Helen Frances Philips, apparently written only four days after the Battle of Manila Bay on May 5, 1898 (Thomas P. Walsh, Tin Pan Alley and the Philippines, 2013, p. 2)."

London/Liverpool: George Philip & Son (& Nephew). Extraordinarily excellent (Near Mint) condition with barely any signs of wear. Wonderful and rare publication !. London/Liverpool, George Philip & Son (& Nephew), 1898. Oblong Quarto. Coloured frontispiece, 11 pages of text and XXVII plates with explanations. Original Hardcover (green cloth with lettering to spine and cover). Extraordinarily excellent (Near Mint) condition with barely any signs of wear. Wonderful and rare publication ! Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (11 March 1868 ?- 16 January 1940), known as Lolly, was born at 23 Fitzroy Road, London. She was the daughter of the Irish artist John Butler Yeats and sister of W. B., Jack and Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats. She trained and worked as an art teacher and was a member of William Morris's circle in London before her family returned to Dublin in 1900. Yeats wrote and created the artwork for "Elementary Brush-Work Studies" (published in 1900), an educational book that teaches young children the technique of painting flowers and plants using her simple method. At the suggestion of Emery Walker, who worked with Morris on the Kelmscott Press, Yeats studied printing with the Women's Printing Society in London. In Dublin, she accepted the invitation to join Evelyn Gleeson to form the Dun Emer Guild along with Lily, who was an embroiderer. Yeats managed the Dun Emer Press from 1902. The Press was located at Runnymede, the house of Evelyn Gleeson. (This house, located in Dundrum, was later renamed Dun Emer. It has since been demolished.) This was set up with the intention of training young women in bookbinding and printing. In 1908, she and her brother William started the Cuala Press, publishing over 70 books including 48 by the poet. Yeats was the first commercial printer in Ireland to work exclusively with hand presses. (Wikipedia)
