Montauk Point, L.I.

Camp Wykoff was one of the more famous camps of the Spanish American War. The government had realized that with the outbreak of disease in Cuba and Puerto Rico, the returning soldiers could not be immediately sent back to their homes, since the communicable diseases they may carry - yellow fever, malaria, etc. - may be carried home with them. The idea was started to create an isolated camp where the men could first be cleared of disease before being released.

Many military units spent their last days as an organization at the New York camp. The camp was to consist of two areas. A smaller area of the camp would be a detention camp for men quarantined from the general population for reasons of disease. Études d'économie politique appliquée.

Lausanne & Paris: F. Rouge & F. Pichon,, 1898. (Théorie de la production de la richesse sociale). Octavo (208 x 134 mm). Near contemporary quarter morocco, speckled paper boards, red morocco label to spine, raised bands ruled in blind, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled brown, partially unopened. 4 folding plates. Some wear to corners and lower board, small nick to second raised band, boards gently scuffed, contents lightly browned and plates foxed as typical, overall a very good copy. First edition of this collection of articles, originally intended to complete Walras's Élements d'économie politique pure under the title Élements d'économie politique appliquée. The treatise remained unfinished, however, and it was eventually published in the form of incomplete Études. "Three-quarters of the volume are devoted to money and finance; the rest is divided into three roughly equal parts - between the study of monopolies, of agricultural studies, of industry and commerce and the 'Esquisse d'une doctrine économique et sociale'. In Part I, 'Money' - more than a third of the book - Walras presents again the chapters that had been expurgated from the third edition of Éléments, the Theory of Money and half a dozen articles published in scientific journals and newspapers. The part entitled "II. Monopolies" consists of only one substantial study dating back to 1875, 'L'État et les chemins de fer', that had been turned down by the Journal des économistes. Part III contains three articles whose titles speak for themselves: 'The influence of communication between markets on the situation of rural communities', 'Applied economics and the protection of wages' and 'Theory of free trade'. Three parts follow, on credit, banking (with a text that is crucial to understand Walras's monetary theory, 'Mathematical theory of banknotes') and stock markets. The book concludes with 'Outline of an economic and social doctrine'" (Faccarello & Kurz, 256).

In September 1897, when he was nearly twelve, Patton’s father ‘finally rebelled against the “hands that rock the cradle” ruling the boy, and sent him to the local grammar school,’ the Classical School for Boys, located on South Euclid Avenue in nearby Pasadena … His first day was a poignant one in Patton’s life: ‘We drove up in the old surrey and … Papa turned to me and said very sadly: “Son, henceforth our paths diverge forever.” I have never forgotten that but though we lived more and more apart our hearts and minds never separated.’

“The principal of the Classical School for Boys was Dr. Stephen Cutter Clark [1859-1931], a noted Latin scholar and historian who was assisted by his brother, Mr. G.M. Clark. At what was essentially a small high school, Patton joined twenty-five other children of Southern California gentry and spent the next six years undergoing his first formal training. A diligent student, Patton nevertheless faltered because of his dyslexia. Algebra, geometry, and arithmetic were among the subjects taught and virtually all proved a struggle … In 1902, for example, Patton’s report cards reflect examination and recitation grades in the fifties and sixties and occasionally in the low seventies. His deportment was exemplary, as were his marks in ancient and modern history, which consistently were in the high nineties…

“Where Patton excelled was in his amazing capacity to memorize and quote verbatim and at length from the Bible or any book he had been exposed to during those many years of home schooling. Although he was not born with it, Patton developed a photographic mind that compensated dramatically for his dyslexia … By the time he entered VMI [Virginia Military Institute] in 1903, he had acquired the rudiments of a first-class education. Hidden behind the negative image created by the dyslexia lay an incredibly vast storehouse of knowledge of biblical and military subjects. Later, as an adult, Patton would make light of his academic ordeal by joking. ‘I had trouble with my a’s and b’s – and what the hell is that other letter?’”

(2) Postmarked envelope from Fort Myer incorporating his signature!

Envelope Signed “Geo. S Patton” in the name of the addressee, 6” x 4”. George Washington 2¢ stamp affixed, postmarked Fort Myer, Va., April 21, 1913. Addressed by Patton to his mother, “Mrs. Geo. S Patton / San Gabriel / Los Angeles Co. / California.” Slit open at top edge. Fine condition.

Patton left VMI in 1903 for West Point where he graduated in 1909, ranking 46 in a class of 103. He was assigned the 15th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Sheridan, near Chicago. In the Fall of 1911, Patton received orders to report to Fort Myer, Virginia, for duty with the 15th Cavalry.
CYRANO DE BERGERAC

Eugène Fasquelle, Paris 1898 - 200 x 140 mm. (7 3/4 x 5 1/2"). 6 p.l, [13]-225 pp., [1] leaf (first and last leaves blank). FIRST EDITION, First Printing. Publisher's original light green paper wrappers, ENTIRELY UNOPENED. With early glassine wrapper. In a later cloth clamshell box. Rear cover with a hint of smudging and rumpling, a touch of fraying to tail of spine, but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, never read and little changed since the day it left the press. This is a remarkable unopened copy of Rostand's influential and enduringly popular verse play in five acts. A theatrical triumph from its opening night, "Cyrano" was quickly translated into multiple languages, and brought to English the untranslatable term, "panache." Rostand (1868-1918) wrote a number of successful plays, often, like "Cyrano," based on figures from French history. While copies appear on the market with some regularity, one is very unlikely to find one in closer to original condition than the present volume. Études d'économie politique appliquée. (Théorie de la production de la richesse sociale).

Lausanne & Paris: F. Rouge & F. Pichon, 1898 - Octavo (208 x 134 mm). Near contemporary quarter morocco, speckled paper boards, red morocco label to spine, raised bands ruled in blind, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled brown, partially unopened. Some wear to corners and lower board, small nick to second raised band, boards gently scuffed, contents lightly browned and plates foxed as typical, overall a very good copy. 4 folding plates. Einaudi 5969; Walker 205. See Gilbert Faccarello & Heinz D. Kurz, Handbook on the History of Economic Analysis Volume I: Great Economists Since Petty and Boisguilbert. Edward Elgar Publishing, 2016. [Attributes: First Edition]

In near fine condition.A very sharp example. In 1890, Norwegian scientist and explorer Fridtjof Nansen announced an innovative plan for Northern polar expeditions. "His theory, that a drift-current sets across the polar regions from Bering Strait... towards the east coast of Greenland was based on a number of indications... His intention was to get his vessel fixed in the ice to the north of Eastern Siberia and let her drift with it." Although criticized, his plan succeeded. "His ship, the 'Fram' ('Forward'), was specially built of immense strength and peculiar form" in order to endure the ice-floes. "During the winter of 1894-95 it was decided that an expedition should be made northward over the ice on foot in the spring... Being satisfied that the 'Fram' would continue to drift safely," Nansen led the expedition to 86 degrees North, "the highest latitude then reached by man" (Britannica).
