Fregi tipografici n.t. in rosso e in nero, numerose figure n.t. Fioriture e bruniture consute. Bell'esemplare in parte intonso. Government Printing Office, 1898., 1898. First edition. 8vo. Salmon-colored printed wrappers, 49 pp., map. Large portion of the report deals with more effectually carrying out the law prohibiting the sale of intoxicating liquors in Alaska. Mention is made of a tribe on the Admiralty Island known as the "Hoochinoos" who used to smuggle to the soldiers at Sitka a beverage known as "hoochinoo" and "hooch." "Hooch" was made from a mash of black molasses imported from the Hawaiian Islands. Smuggling and the control of smugglers is of great concern to the law as well as effectively enforcing the laws to protect both saloon keepers and the citizens. The governor further reports on criminal and penal laws, land laws, population, taxable property, agricultural development, stock raising, reindeer, fur seals, sea otters, mining, etc. Disasters are included in the report with the mention of the schooner Lady Jane Grey that went down off Cape Flattery with only a few saved. A map of the longitudinal section of workings of the Alaska/Mexican Gold Mine is also present. A fine, clean copy. WICKERSHAM 227.

Sceaux: E. Charaire, [circa 1898]. Folding cloth-hinged stiff boards, mounted with illustrated chromolithographic game surface. Measures 23-3/4 by 16-3/4 inches opened. $3000.Original game board, with game-squares containing portraits of the principal characters in the Dreyfus scandal, including Émile Zola, whose famous protest in the form of an open newspaper letter entitled “J’Accuse” contributed to Dreyfus’ eventual pardon and release.Dreyfus’ court-martial, conviction, and final acquittal “developed into a political event which had repercussions throughout France and the Jewish world” (Bredin), and exposed anti-Semitism that was rampant in the French military. Dreyfus was accused in 1894 of attempting to transmit a secret military document to the military attaché of the German embassy in Paris, the charges against him stemming from anti-Semitism. Arrested and tried before a court-martial, Dreyfus was found guilty of treason, sentenced to life imprisonment and exiled to Devil’s Island. Public outcry led to the discovery of suppressed exculpatory evidence, a retrial and eventual pardon. “The Dreyfus affair made a strong impact on the outlook of world Jewry and the atmosphere in their respective countries. Jews everywhere were shocked that the affair could take place in France, the ‘homeland of liberty and the Great Revolution,’ and that hatred of the Jews could still prejudice the behavior of a considerable part of the French people, in particular when the Jewish victim was completely assimilated. This seemed to prove clearly that assimilation was no defense against anti-Semitism” (Encyclopedia Judaica 6, 228). Without game pieces and dice. Only the lightest soiling to board surface, fragment of ribbon tie still in place. An extraordinary surviving artifact in near-fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London Longmans, Green and Co 1898 - First edition, first issue of the book, no other printings were issued of the first edition but one. This copy with the printed errata slip tipped in. A complete and perfect copy. With a photographic portrait frontispiece, 2 folding maps in colour and 4 sketches and plans. 8vo, publisher’s original pale green cloth lettered in gilt on spine and cover. Now housed in a very fine light-red morocco fold-over case, the spine panel of the case with raised bands stopped in gilt, the compartments with gilt ruled frames, lettered and numbered in 3 compartments in gilt. xv, 336, 32 ads. An extremely fine copy, all tissue guards present, maps and sketches all in especially fine condition, the cloth as pristine and about as fine and clean as one could hope to find. THE FIRST EDITION, AND AN EXTREMELY FINE AND CLEAN COPY OF THIS INCREASINGLY HARD TO FIND WORK. The first book written by Winston Churchill who would one day be not only a prolific and prize winning author but one of the greatest figures in modern history. After an education at Harrow and Sandhurst he entered the army in 1895 and embarked on one of the most varied and distinguished careers of the 20th century. He acted as a correspondent for The Daily Telegraph from India and for the Morning Post during the Boer War. His dramatic escape from prison in Pretoria brought him to public attention. He embarked on his political career in 1900 by entering Parliament. While there he held many major offices of state: Home Secretary, Secretary of State for War, First Lord of the Admiralty in which he oversaw naval operations for the First World War, Colonial Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and eventually in 1940, Prime Minister. The latter office he would hold throughout World War Two and again from 1951 to 1955. Early in this illustrious life, in 1897, the Daily Telegraph paid Churchill £5 per column for his dispatches from the Northwest Frontier in India, where he first saw action as a soldier, and after his return he fashioned these articles into the book here offered. It was the author's first book and only 2000 copies were printed; it is of course now very difficult to find, especially in such fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1898. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1898. 14 pp undated ads. Original dark green cloth. First English Edition of Conrad's fourth book -- his first collection of short stories (including "An Outpost of Progress," a Congo tale anticipating his later "Heart of Darkness"). The American edition by Scribner's is believed to have come out about ten days earlier. For this U.K. edition Cagle estimates a total printing of about 1,250 copies -- including some later copies with no gilt top edge, plus some copies that were remaindered with a cancel title page and a still later binding (the book did not sell well).~This copy is in the primary state (with top edge gilt and wove endpapers), and is in bright, just-about-fine condition -- one very faint small mark on the front cover, but essentially no wear at all. TALES OF UNREST is becoming increasingly uncommon in this condition. Cagle A4c.1. Provenance: bookplate of L[ouis]. C[harles]. Casartelli (1852-1925), who was an academic in the field of Eastern religions, the author of numerous books in that field between 1882 and 1908, and a professor at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). In 1878 he had also become an ordained priest of the Catholic Church; in 1903 he was elevated to the post of 4th Diocesan Bishop of Salford (the Manchester-Liverpool area), a post he held until his death.

Vorderseite, kl. Eckknick, leichte Gbrsp. Large folio. Dark green three-quarter calf over textured green paper-covered boards, the flat spine lettered and simply decorated in gilt. Very good. This volume, printed for the Cuban navy's artillery division, illustrates thirty-nine ships in the United States Naval Fleet in detail. Each vessel is illustrated in pictorial and schematic form, with a toned lithograph of each ship and three cross-section views. The U.S.S. Maine, whose sinking in Havana harbor was a precipitating cause of the Spanish-American War, is among the ships illustrated. On each ship, the most vulnerable section is indicated. In the introductory notes, the author indicates that the purpose of this volume is to prepare Cuba for counterattacks to which it may one day be exposed. A large and remarkable volume, and an extremely interesting piece of American naval history. OCLC records only a single copy of this work, at the Naval Historical Center, but also mentions what may be a second copy at Harvard (lacking a titlepage, tentatively dated 1897 and apparently titled BUQUES DE GUERRA DE LA MARINA DE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DE AMÉRICA). Quite rare. OCLC 39900517.
