        Teatro Regio Torino.

Italian poster for Torino's Royal Theatre Milan: Ricordi 1898. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1899. Plate no. 192. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art. By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche.

Unpublished Children's book manuscript by the wife of Hungary's first President. Came from a collection of a children'?s book editor active in the 1940s to 50s

Her husband, Count Michael Karolyi, was elected President of the new Republic of Hungary, after World War I, but was eventually ousted by the Communists. He and his wife spent the next 26 years living in exile in France and England. The Countess helped support her family by taking a variety of jobs, including driving a taxi, running a sightseeing boat, and writing articles. She also wrote her Memoirs and translated those of her husband) . A 48 page corrected typescript of a book titled ?JINX? along with 6 original hand-painted illustrations done b the author herself, the Countess Catherine Karolyi (1898-1985). Laid in a homemade green paper binder with a piece of tan burlap affixed to the front. A watercolor illustration by Karolyi is present but no longer affixed to the cover. Title page reads story and illustrations by Countess Catherine Karolyi; adaptation into English by Elizabeth Burrows Archer. On the next page is the following note: ?As Countess Karolyi was doing the illustrations in Paris while I was rewriting the story in Zurich there are several discrepancies between the illustrations and the text at the moment. Few sample illustrations. The story of a miniature boy, no bigger at the age of 7 than a milk bottle. He is given the nickname Jinx because of his bad luck. Over 30 pages of the text have corrections in pencil, 17 probably made by the translator. His brothers constantly pick on him and his only friends are Mr. Mouse, Sir Anthony Prettytail ? a caged swallow, and Mr. O?Muffin, a rag doll. He runs away and on the way out frees Tony the Swallow from his cage. He finds a badly beaten Mr. O?Muffin in need of help. Jinx goes to Toyland to find help for his friend where he is given a passport on the Dolltown train. The King of Toyland is gravely ill and in need of a magic medicine called Greenicillin. Jinx goes to the Toyland pharmacist to buy some but finds it is only available in a place called ?Leaf-land? whose location is unknown. Jinx sees Doctor Fixitup to tell him about his wounded friend back in Man?s Land and the Doctor tells him about a magic growth medicine that the King uses once a year to grow in size and visit the world of Man?s Land. Jinx sets out to find Leaf-land to procure some of the Greenicillin. so he may save the king and get the growth medicine in return. Jinx returns to his rag doll friend in the forest and Mr. O?Muffin tells him of a visit with Mr. Septimus Dew from a place called Leaf-land. Located high in the branches of the tree. Jinx hitches a ride up the tree from Mr. Snail to the top branch where Leaf-land lies. He meets a Dr. Green who will give him his only bottle of Greenicillin if he slays the pesky Herr Creepy Caterpillar who keeps attaching Leaf-land. With the help of Tony the swallow, Jinx defeats the creature in battle and becomes a hero in Leaf-land. The doctor gives him the medicine and Jinx is flown back to the Palace by Tony, where he finds the King barely alive. Jinx gives the medicine to the King?s seven (7) wise old doctors and soon the King is cured. The grateful King gives Jinx the growth medicine and he returns home to his grieving family as a normal-sized boy. The six (6) watercolor illustrations by Karolyi are well executed and mounted on grey craft paper. The illustration include: the King in bed surrounded by his seven(7) doctors after he has taken the medicine; Jinx hiding under a tea cup; Jinx talking to the Toy land pharmacist; a portrait of Dr. Green in uniform; Herr Creepy Caterpillar attacking Leaf-land; and Jinx growing in size after taking the special medicine. Condition-wise the text and illustrations are in very good shape with some light wear. The green binder has significant wear and is separated at the spine. The cover illustration is separated from the burlap and cover. No reference has been found Her husband, Count Michael Karolyi, was elected President of the new Republic of Hungary, after World War I, but was eventually ousted by the Communists. He and his wife spent the next 26 years living in exile in France and England. The Countess helped support her family by taking a variety of jobs, including driving a taxi, running a sightseeing boat, and writing articles.         Autograph Letters Signed with Spanish American War Content

1898 - Two letters from young volunteer James Whittemore Smith to his parents, detailing his experience in the Spanish American War. Both letters are in very good condition with light soil and fold lines. An envelope addressed to Smith is also included, with the address "Siboney Hospital Cuba Via Tampa Fla." crossed through. The first letter of four pages on two leaves is dated June 29, 1898, 4 miles from Santiago, Cuba. The second letter of two pages on one leaf is dated July 14, 1898, Hospital, Fort Monroe, Hampton, Virginia, with a purple ink stamp of The Young Men's Christian Association of Hampton, VA. The first letter is signed J. W. Smith, Cuba, 1st Div. 2nd. Brig. 8th Army Corps, 2nd Mass. Volunteers, Co. A. "As you already know we landed all right and the Mass. Boys of Co. E were the first to set foot on Cuban soil.In the morning 'Teddy's Rough Riders' went ahead & they were ambushed in the hills and a 2 1/2 or 3 hour fight ensued. As we marched by the dead and wounded it was an awful sight. You remember the millionaire Hamilton Fish, he was the first to fall and he lay dead beside the road as we marched by. Capt. Capen was also killed; his father is on the island in the heavy artillery. It was an awful fight ; one negro I believe was found dead with his hand grasping the throat of a dead Spanish captain.I hope you have got my last letters but I have not got any from you for over 2 1/2 weeks so don't know the 1st thing about what's going on at home. Bacon & hard tack, sugar & coffee are the field rations." From the second letter: "Dear Mother: I am at last in God's country alive.Send me a little money as I have lost every thing I ever had. Most every one took off everything, but their can-teens & ammunition belts at the beginning of the battle the first of July & the miserable Cuban dogs stole it. I was hit by a bullet but the fellow on my right was hit in the elbow the ball coming out his neck & the one on my left through the shoulder. Both are alive.Ward. 1 General Hospital Fort Monroe Va." James Whittemore Smith (1880-1910) went on to become a teacher in Puerto Rico in the early 1900s, after attending Amherst. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Griffith Farran Brown Sampson Low 1898 - Two Henty paperback rarities bound in together and retaining their wonderful original covers. The Young Buglers in this form, although suspected to exist by Newbolt, is totally unrecorded and unlisted. Jack Archer was recorded by Newbolt but almost never seen on the market. For Young Buglers, Griffith Farran (c1898) see Newbolt's note 1. for 7.8. "The edition probably appeared by itself in paper covers" like the Young Franc-Tireurs 5.11. Jack Archer, Sampson Low, is dated on the title page 1898 and listed in Newbolt as 14.4. Only a single copy was known to him. Unlike his copy this one is complete. These two paperbacks are in one contemporary binding and I do not know whether anything of their spines still remain. Overall they have been beautifully preserved and incredibly scarce.         O kolebanii vesov. Rech' dlja obshhego sobranija X-ogo S'ezda Russkih Estestvoispytatelej v g. Kieve (avg. 1898g.).

No place, 1898. - Folio. Autograph manuscript. 24 ff., some leaves written on both sides. Revised by the author throughout. The original manuscript of Mendeleev's speech on "The Oscillation of the Balance", delivered at the General Meeting of the 10th Congress of Russian Naturalists in Kiev (August 1898). In his annotated bibliography of his own works, self-compiled in 1899, Mendeleev writes: "Predmet schitaju ochen' vazhnym i interesnym" ("A subject I find very important and interesting"). After the end of his teaching career at the University of St. Petersburg in 1890, Mendeleev was variously employed by the government bureaucracy. From 1892 on he was "concerned in the regulation of the system of weights and measures in Russia, a task that he discharged 'with enthusiasm, since here the purely scientific was closely interwoven with the practical.' In 1893 he was named director of the newly created Central Board of Weights and Measures, a post which he held until his death, and in connection with which he frequently traveled abroad" (DSB IX, 292). - "The great importance of Mendeleev's work", write Kayak and Smirnova, "was that in his approach to the development of the theory of balances and methods of accurate weighing he took into account the physical essence of the phenomena investigated, whereas many investigators before and even after him attempted to solve all the problems on the basis of purely mechanical conceptions [.] Mendeleev's interest in balances as the most important instrument in physical and chemical investigations was manifested from the very beginning of his scientific work. Long before his move to the Depot of Standard Weights and Measures he devoted much attention to the perfection of balances, and methods of accurate weighing. In 1861 Mendeleev succeded in observing the oscillations of balances from a distance, thereby eliminating the influence of the heat radiated by the observer on the balance; he also proposed the use of a heat distributor made of copper for a balance beam. Mendeleev's most important work on the development of the theory of balances and methods of accurate weighing was made at the Principal Bureau of Weights and Measures, where he took upon himself the entire responsibility for organizing and equipping the weight laboratory" (p. 25). - Occasional insignificant edge defects, but altogether a very well preserved manuscript. Includes a copy of the published text. Published: Sochineniya 7, pp. 577-591. Reference: Sochineniya 25, p. 752, no. 275. - Cf. L. K. Kayak and N. A. Smirnova, Theory of balances and accurate weighing in the investigations of Mendeleev and later developments, in: Izmeritel'naya Tekhnika 9 (Sept. 1969), pp. 25-28.

Paris and London: Flory and Hacon and Ricketts, 1898. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. One of 256 copies (stated on the limitation but there were probably fewer copies were actually printed [Watry,The Vale Press]). A wonderful presentation copy. Inscribed by Lucien Pissarro: "To Archie MacGregor from Lucien Pissarro. April 1898." MacGregor, a painter and follower of the Pre-Raphaelites, had been a teacher of Esther Pissarro and her friend Diana White at the Crystal Palace School of Art in London and was a close friend. It was MacGregor who found the Pissarros their house, The Brook, located near his own in Bedford Park. The first eight pages were set by Pissarro at the Eragny Press, but due to his ill-health the rest of the book was produced by Ricketts at the Ballantyne Press like other Vale Press books. The cover for this book was Lucien's wife, Esther Pissarro's, first independent printing project at the Eragny Press. Lucien had begun it before his illness but could not finish (Genz, A History of the Eragny Press, page 37). The resulting binding is in grey/green paper with a green and red floral design by Lucien called the "Wild Rose." .Covers are bumped and spine somewhat worn and rubbed. Offsetting to free front and rear endpapers and some darkening to top page edges but otherwise in beautiful condition. With tipped-in errata slip in rear. In French. 31 pages. ART/071516.
