William Nicholson ist neben Vallotton einer der wichtigsten Vertreter jener Künstler, welche den Holzschnitt zur Zeit des "fin de siècle" zur Wiederkehr verhalfen.         Istoricheskii ocherk deiatel'nosti Imperatorskago Obshchestva Razmnozheniia Okhotnich'ikh i Promyslovykh Zhivotnykh i Pravil'noi Okhoty [Historical sketch of the activities of the Imperial Society for the Breeding of Hunting and Commercial Animals and for Hunting Rules]. With an appendix containing an excerpt from the pedigrees of the Society, providing the names of dogs exhibited at the Society's exhibitions and competitions.

Moscow: Tipo-litografiia vysochaishe utverzhdennogo T-va I. N. Kushnerev i Ko. 1898 - First published history of the “Imperial Society for the Breeding of Hunting and Commercial Animals and for the Rules of the Hunt,” printed in 1898, on the occasion of its twenty-fifth anniversary, and one of the first Russian works on wildlife preservation. Created by interested philanthropists and wealthy landowners, the Society tried to increase awareness about the increasing damage wreaked by industrialization and over-hunting. The most striking example of its activism is its long-running campaign to preserve Russia’s distinctive wildlife: the protection of historically important, and iconic, species in Russia’s forests and steppes: the buffalo, the fox, and the moose. The resulting campaign to save the moose, for example, in the early 1880s can be considered one of the earliest successful campaigns for natural preservation in the Russian Empire, and foreshadowed many Soviet and contemporary movements. The Society was also influential in promoting preservationist amendments to Russia’s law codex and in actively advising legislative councils. It became extremely influential, not least due to the connections of its members, and was instrumental in developing Russian dog breeds, as described in the included appendix. The Society held annual exhibitions for dog and horse breeders, which served to strengthen and showcase Russia’s breeding industry and which contributed to the fame of the borzoi.         Rossa's Recollections, 1838 to 1898 Childhood, Boyhood, Manhood. Customs, habits and manners of the Irish people

O'Donovan Rossa, Mariner's Harbor, N.Y. 1898 - Autograph; 402 pages; Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. This is a particularly fine and interesting presentation copy, boldly signed and inscribed by the author - one of the most active (and extreme) of the Irish revolutionaries of the nineteenth century. The long, full title of this book of memoirs does a fair job of stating the outlines of the author's extraordinary course of life. "Rossa's recollections, 1838 to 1898. Childhood, boyhood, manhood. Customs, habits and manners of the Irish people. Erinach and Sassenach-Catholic and Protestant-Englishman and Irishman-English religion-Irish plunder. Social life and prison life. The Fenian movement. Travels in Ireland, England, Scotland and America." Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa (1831– 1915), was an Irish Fenian leader and prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. As a young shopkeeper in Skibbereen, the southernmost town in Ireland, O'Donovan Rossa founded the 'Phoenix National and Literary Society,' the aim of which was "the liberation of Ireland by force of arms." Rossa's Phoenix Society later merged with the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), founded two years later in Dublin. He was arrested and jailed at the end of 1858 for over six months. Charges against Rossa escalated by 1865 to "High Treason" and he was convicted and sentenced to penal servitude for life due to his previous convictions. He served his time in Pentonville, Portland and Chatham prisons in England. While a guest of the English state, he won a by-election to Parliament for the seat from Tipperary constituency, but the election was set aside as Rossa was a convicted felon. He made a deal to participate in the Fenian Amnesty of 1870 by promising not to return to Ireland; the instrument of his exile became famous. He and four other Irish rebels boarded the S. S. Cuba for the voyage to America. The five men [John Devoy, Charles Underwood O'Connell, Harry Mulleda, John McClure and O'Donovan Rossa] were famously dubbed "The Cuba Five." Rossa established a base in New York City and quickly joined Clan na Gael and the Fenian Brotherhood. If anything, his revolutionary activities accelerated, as Rossa organised the first-ever bombings by Irish republicans of English cities in what was called the "dynamite campaign". The campaign lasted through the 1880s and made him infamous, to say the least, in Britain. The British government repeatedly demanded his extradition, but their efforts were denied. In 1885, Rossa was shot outside his office near Broadway by an Englishwoman, Yseult Dudley, but his wounds were not life-threatening. There were charges and counter-charges about whether or not she was working on behalf of the English government. What is beyond dispute is that Yseult Dudley, like many others, was incensed at Rossa's tactics and his vigorous and succesful organised fund raising (the so-called "Skirmishing Fund") - intended to support the arming of those who would fight the British. This self-published volume of memoirs was neither published nor distributed through normal book-publishing circles, but most likely carried around by the author on his travels and lectures on behalf of his cause. By the end of the nineteenth century, O'Donovan Rossa had moved his base of operations to Staten Island, which explains why this now-scarce book was issued from Mariner's Harbor, and old neighborhood on the north shore of the island. The boldly written inscription, entirely in Rossa's neat handwriting, nearly fills the front free endpaper and offers a tantalizing link between Rossa's specific Irish roots and his later life in America. In full, it reads: "Presentation Copy / To / Mr. Patrick Murray / of Skibbereen, Ireland / and Boston, America / In remembrance / of his kindness to / the author / O'Donovan Rossa / New York / 1898." There is reference in Rossa's text to a Patrick Murray, the husband of the author's one remaining living aunt, Bridget (at the time Rossa made his first return trip to Irela [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Hurtig & Seamon's Illustrated Vaudeville Catalogue No. 3. Season 1898-'99.

New York: Hurtig & Seamon. Printed by Meyer Levenson, 1898. Full Cloth. Paper pastedown of decoratve cloth. . Very Good. Oblong 8vo. 18 by 24 cm. [4], 100, [1] pp. Scarce, with only copies of Hurtig & Seamon catalogues at Yale and Univ. of Illinois, with unknown issue. Hurtig and Seamon was a major theatrical agent of Vaudeville acts, and it also owned theaters, including the theater that later became the Apollo Theater in Harlem. The catalogue includes 97 different acts, with one page devoted to each act, and three acts receiving a three page treatment. The acts run the whole Vaudeville gamut -- singers, dancers, comedians, minstrel, acrobats, magicians, novelty acts, combinations of these, and within these catagories, a breadth of styles or genres. All the advertisements, for so they are, feature photos, and the accompanying build-ups are generally crammed with information about the acts and performers. Virtually all the performers today are very obscure, which on balance adds to the interest in the catalogue. A moderate amount of soiling on the cover. One small closed tear within, now repaired.

First Czech book for the blind – První cítanka pro slepé dítky školy obecné [First reader for blind children in general school].

Prague: C. K. Školni knihosklad 1898 - Quarto (28.5 × 22.5 cm). Contemporary card boards; [1], 1-45 leaves. Good or better; boards lightly rubbed; cancelled stamps of a provincial Czech school; leaves very well preserved. The first Czech-language reader for blind children, compiled by workers at Klár’s Institute for the Blind (Kláruv ústav slepcu) in Prague, an education institute where a printer’s shop was founded in 1894 to publish the first Czech books in alphabets for the blind; prior to this, students of the Institute had to use German and other international texts. Rather than using Braille, this volume was set in Klein letters, a relief script using connected letter forms, invented by Viennese blind-script pioneer Johann Wilhelm Klein (1765-1848); later publications of the Institute used Braille script. The book introduces the alphabet, before continuing from individual syllables to hyphenated words to small texts for reading practice.         The Orchids of Sikkim Himalaya.

Calcutta, printed at the Bengal Secretariat Press, 1898. 4 volumes. Folio (348 x 275mm). pp. (14), iii, iv, 342, 11, with 453 lithographed plates of which the first 133 hand-coloured. Contemporary half calf. First major publication on the orchids of the Himalaya. George King (1840-1909) was superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic Gardens. In 1887 he launched the 'Annals of the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta', which became the vehicle for impressive and profusely illustrated monographs. The present rare monograph forms the 8th volume of this periodical. The illustrations (all after drawings by R. Pantling) were never issued fully coloured; the colouring is confined to the essential details of the orchids. The 4 volumes are divided as follows: I. Letterpress; II. Plates of Malaxideae; III. Plates of Epidendreae & Vandeae; IV. Plates of Listereae, Goodyereae, Ophrydea & Cypripedieae. "The plates in the 'Orchids of the Sikkim Himalaya'... were coloured by the sons of Nepalese coolies, who had never, until [the author] Mr Pantling took them in hand, been accustomed to use any implements more delicate than a hoe. Mr Pantling's perseverance and skill in drilling these boys into accurate colourists was considered marvellous by all who had seen them at work" (Desmond, The European discovery of the Indian flora p. 152).//Nissen BBI, 1051; Stafleu & Cowan 3660.

Histoire du livre Les émaux byzantins, [collection de] A.W. Zwenigorodskoï.

      - St. Petersbourg, [s.n.], 1898. 31 x 21 cm. White cloth, very richly gilt and decorated with depictions of enamels and gem-studded jewels. All edges decorated in red and gold. (6), 252 p., 6 plates (two chromolithographies, one with additional gold; three wood engraved pictures, and an engraving on Imperial Japanese paper by W.W. Matthé after a drawing by Alexander P. Bogolioubow), (2) p. Gilt and blue endpapers. Printed in 100 numbered copies, but this copy not numbered. First edition. Perfectly preserved.* This curious book, very luxuriously produced, was published out of sheer admiration for the sumptuous description of Prince Alexander Zvenigorodsky's collection of priceless antique enamels, that was sent to high-placed individuals in many countries of the world. In fact, this book mainly consists of verbatim reactions and letters-of-thanks for Zwenigorodsky's volume by (noble secretaries of) granddukes, princes and queens and their ministers, museum directors and state librarians.         SIX DRAWINGS Illustrating Théophile Gautiers Romance Mademoiselle de Maupin

London: Leonard Smithers, 1898. First edition, LIMITED TO ONLY 50 HAND NUMBERED COPIES. Six photogravures "being reproductions of an uncompleted set of illustrations by the late Aubrey Beardsley to Mademoiselle de Maupin". Large Folio [15.3 by 11 inches approx.], loosely contained as issued in the original printed wrapper and portfolio of gray boards with green cloth back and corners, the upper board printed in red and black, with green silk ties. A nice set of this extremely scarce Beardsley item. The plates are all without wear, occasionally a few spots here or there caused by the paper stock, The wrapper is well preserved, the portfolio covers with some general age-wear, having served their purpose well. FIRST EDITION OF THIS EXTREMELY SCARCE SET OF PHOTOGRAVURES PUBLISHED POSTHUMOUSLY OF ARTWORK INTENDED FOR Mademoiselle de Maupin. In the autumn of 1897 Beardsley, increasingly desperate to see another book published similar to THE RAPE OF THE LOCK, set to work on illustrations for 'Mademoiselle de Maupin' with Leonard Smithers' approval. This precipitated something of a crisis in his relationship with the publisher. Smithers simply did not have the money for the project and dragged his heals while Beardsley, hurt by what he saw as a lack of faith by him, became increasingly depressed and began suffering pangs of paranoia over the project. Smithers then accused Beardsley of becoming tired with Maupin, which may have contributed to Beardsley anxiety over money and belief that his friend was not playing fair with him during his illness and planning to take his artwork and sell it for profit after his death. In only a few more months the artist would be dead and the "Maupin" project would never be completed.

(Zitat) Deutsch

Real estate in Texas, in Part [manuscript title on verso of front endpaper].

Ownership signature on front endpaper "Property of John E. Roller, Harrisonburg, VA." Harrisonburg, VA, Archer City, TX, and other locations, nd [ca. 1898]. 16mo. 120 numbered pages (of which 40 have been used for manuscript entries, in pencil and ink); approximately 3500 words. Roller (1844-1918), a native of Rockingham County, Virginia, entered the Virginia Military Institute in December, 1861, and graduated in July, 1863, entering Confederate army service immediately as second lieutenant, Company G, 2nd Confederate States Engineers, and serving to the end of the conflict with the Army of Northern Virginia. Following the war, he resided in Harrisonburg, Virginia, working as a lawyer, state legislator, and brigadier general in the Virginia state militia. Good copy, the manuscript quite legible. Cheap leather (spine completely eroded, as are edges and corners). (#6204) This neatly written journal, probably kept by one or more of Roller's agents in Texas, gives a detailed picture of his agricultural property in Knox County, the River Valley and Holliday Creek near Wichita Falls, and town lots in Archer City and Wichita Falls (in all, some 6000 acres). The journal provides a full description of each property, including access to water, railroad stations, churches, and schools, and in some cases titles to the land are traced. One of the farms "needs 300 lbs. of wire to repair and rebuild fence for the benefit and protection of the place; they are now building a wooden bridge 46 feet in length over Holliday Creek on the east line of this place — crops all in good condition — lands level." Information on the crops, trees, dwellings, and out-buildings are recorded; some properties had a good supply of pecan trees, some Mesquite trees were big enough for fence posts; some properties were leased to farmers who grew corn, wheat, and oats as cash crops. At the end of the journal, an agent has recorded a "to-do" list which includes a note to get "original contracts of tenants and take copies and send one to Gen. John E. Roller and retain one." In addition to various farm properties, Roller owned 30 town lots in Archer City. The agent was circumspect about them: "There can be little said about the Archer City lots, they are not fenced or marked but I had some of them located for me — some are located very well but others are too far out. Archer City is hoping for a Rail Road — if they get it their town will build up and your lots will be worth something. The County treasurer told me your lots were worth from ten to twenty five dollars a piece — I asked him if he would give that for them, he said no not now." (According to the Handbook of Texas, Archer City finally got its railroad in 1910.)
