      - St. Petersbourg, [s.n.], 1898. 31 x 21 cm. White cloth, very richly gilt and decorated with depictions of enamels and gem-studded jewels. All edges decorated in red and gold. (6), 252 p., 6 plates (two chromolithographies, one with additional gold; three wood engraved pictures, and an engraving on Imperial Japanese paper by W.W. Matthé after a drawing by Alexander P. Bogolioubow), (2) p. Gilt and blue endpapers. Printed in 100 numbered copies, but this copy not numbered. First edition. Perfectly preserved.* This curious book, very luxuriously produced, was published out of sheer admiration for the sumptuous description of Prince Alexander Zvenigorodsky's collection of priceless antique enamels, that was sent to high-placed individuals in many countries of the world. In fact, this book mainly consists of verbatim reactions and letters-of-thanks for Zwenigorodsky's volume by (noble secretaries of) granddukes, princes and queens and their ministers, museum directors and state librarians.         SIX DRAWINGS Illustrating Théophile Gautiers Romance Mademoiselle de Maupin

London: Leonard Smithers, 1898. First edition, LIMITED TO ONLY 50 HAND NUMBERED COPIES. Six photogravures "being reproductions of an uncompleted set of illustrations by the late Aubrey Beardsley to Mademoiselle de Maupin". Large Folio [15.3 by 11 inches approx.], loosely contained as issued in the original printed wrapper and portfolio of gray boards with green cloth back and corners, the upper board printed in red and black, with green silk ties. A nice set of this extremely scarce Beardsley item. The plates are all without wear, occasionally a few spots here or there caused by the paper stock, The wrapper is well preserved, the portfolio covers with some general age-wear, having served their purpose well. FIRST EDITION OF THIS EXTREMELY SCARCE SET OF PHOTOGRAVURES PUBLISHED POSTHUMOUSLY OF ARTWORK INTENDED FOR Mademoiselle de Maupin. In the autumn of 1897 Beardsley, increasingly desperate to see another book published similar to THE RAPE OF THE LOCK, set to work on illustrations for 'Mademoiselle de Maupin' with Leonard Smithers' approval. This precipitated something of a crisis in his relationship with the publisher. Smithers simply did not have the money for the project and dragged his heals while Beardsley, hurt by what he saw as a lack of faith by him, became increasingly depressed and began suffering pangs of paranoia over the project. Smithers then accused Beardsley of becoming tired with Maupin, which may have contributed to Beardsley anxiety over money and belief that his friend was not playing fair with him during his illness and planning to take his artwork and sell it for profit after his death. In only a few more months the artist would be dead and the "Maupin" project would never be completed.

-, 0, [Prag?], - [Prag?], -, o. J. Mit hds. (Zitat) Deutsch

Real estate in Texas, in Part [manuscript title on verso of front endpaper].

Ownership signature on front endpaper "Property of John E. Roller, Harrisonburg, VA." Harrisonburg, VA, Archer City, TX, and other locations, nd [ca. 1898]. 16mo. 120 numbered pages (of which 40 have been used for manuscript entries, in pencil and ink); approximately 3500 words. Roller (1844-1918), a native of Rockingham County, Virginia, entered the Virginia Military Institute in December, 1861, and graduated in July, 1863, entering Confederate army service immediately as second lieutenant, Company G, 2nd Confederate States Engineers, and serving to the end of the conflict with the Army of Northern Virginia. Following the war, he resided in Harrisonburg, Virginia, working as a lawyer, state legislator, and brigadier general in the Virginia state militia. Good copy, the manuscript quite legible. Cheap leather (spine completely eroded, as are edges and corners). (#6204) This neatly written journal, probably kept by one or more of Roller's agents in Texas, gives a detailed picture of his agricultural property in Knox County, the River Valley and Holliday Creek near Wichita Falls, and town lots in Archer City and Wichita Falls (in all, some 6000 acres). The journal provides a full description of each property, including access to water, railroad stations, churches, and schools, and in some cases titles to the land are traced. One of the farms "needs 300 lbs. of wire to repair and rebuild fence for the benefit and protection of the place; they are now building a wooden bridge 46 feet in length over Holliday Creek on the east line of this place — crops all in good condition — lands level." Information on the crops, trees, dwellings, and out-buildings are recorded; some properties had a good supply of pecan trees, some Mesquite trees were big enough for fence posts; some properties were leased to farmers who grew corn, wheat, and oats as cash crops. At the end of the journal, an agent has recorded a "to-do" list which includes a note to get "original contracts of tenants and take copies and send one to Gen. John E. Roller and retain one." In addition to various farm properties, Roller owned 30 town lots in Archer City. The agent was circumspect about them: "There can be little said about the Archer City lots, they are not fenced or marked but I had some of them located for me — some are located very well but others are too far out. Archer City is hoping for a Rail Road — if they get it their town will build up and your lots will be worth something. The County treasurer told me your lots were worth from ten to twenty five dollars a piece — I asked him if he would give that for them, he said no not now." (According to the Handbook of Texas, Archer City finally got its railroad in 1910.)

Fregi tipografici n.t. in rosso e in nero, numerose figure n.t. Fioriture e bruniture consute. Bell'esemplare in parte intonso. Government Printing Office, 1898., 1898. First edition. 8vo. Salmon-colored printed wrappers, 49 pp., map. Large portion of the report deals with more effectually carrying out the law prohibiting the sale of intoxicating liquors in Alaska. Mention is made of a tribe on the Admiralty Island known as the "Hoochinoos" who used to smuggle to the soldiers at Sitka a beverage known as "hoochinoo" and "hooch." "Hooch" was made from a mash of black molasses imported from the Hawaiian Islands. Smuggling and the control of smugglers is of great concern to the law as well as effectively enforcing the laws to protect both saloon keepers and the citizens. The governor further reports on criminal and penal laws, land laws, population, taxable property, agricultural development, stock raising, reindeer, fur seals, sea otters, mining, etc. Disasters are included in the report with the mention of the schooner Lady Jane Grey that went down off Cape Flattery with only a few saved. A map of the longitudinal section of workings of the Alaska/Mexican Gold Mine is also present. A fine, clean copy. WICKERSHAM 227.
