PARIS DANSANT.

The Wide World Magazine, May, 1898, Number 1, Volume 1, Premiere Issue

George Newnes Limited, 1898. Truly a rare and special item! The first ever issue of 'The Wide World' magazine. "From the late nineteenth century to the swinging sixties, this publication was the bestselling magazine for men craving adventure. Each issue was filled with amazing - but - true - tales of survival, catastrophe and derring - do gathered from around the world... Written in the muscular prose of true heroes and accompanied throughout by photographs and adverts of sublime absurdity, 'The Wide World' was a thrilling testament to an age when men kept their upper lips stiff for a reason and the truth was more dangerous than fiction." - from dust jacket of the book 'The Wide World', published by Macmillan in 2004. Condition: Small chips missing from each end of spine. Binding sound. Modest foxing to front cover else clean and unmarked. Moderate wear. Staples rusty inside front cover. Surprisingly good condition for an item of this vintage. Contents of this issue include: The Romance of Seal Hunting - an interview with Sir Geo. Baden - Powell; Down the Perak River; Houses in Air and in Water (Papua New Guinea); Tragedies of Mont Blanc; The Most Remarkable Newspaper in the World - Michigan State Prison, Jackson City; Memories of Navarino; How the North Pole will be reached, by Dr. Fridtjof Nansen; The New Route to the Klondike; The Cruise of the Slaver 'Carl'; Castaways in the Frozen North; and more. Numerous wonderful black and white photos. A marvelous gift for fans of this most entertaining of magazines.

Album di cartoline, fine Ottocento ? inizio Novecento. Raccolta di ca. 550 cartoline.

- Originale.binding editor to bradel half dark green calico, smooth back, as part of black morocco, gilt small iron and double gold in net queue.Douze numbers from January to December 1898. conservées.Chaque number Covers Edition is illustrated with a literary xylographie.Contributions Boylesve Rene, Henri Ghéon, André Gide, Francis Jammes, etc.Publication founded in 1890 by Henri Mazel, the Hermitage is a monthly magazine owned by the first wave of small magazines Symbolists. In 1895, the magazine between declining and its new director, Edouard Ducoté, uses André Gide. The editorial team is reduced to twelve regular contributors, friends Gide. After many difficulties and attempts to overhaul the editorial team (Remy de Gourmont to make a pass and will also contribute financially in 1905), the Hermitage breathed his last in 1906. The Hermitage manages to detach other important magazines of the time as the Mercure de France or La Revue blanche because it boasts eclectic and apolitical; on its cover, you can also read that it is "the only journal that deals with politics or sociology [but] which deals only with literature and art." His illustrations are small art nouveau, and, true to his state of mind symbolist, employees are more interested in poetry than novel. Tiphaine Samoyault, French literary critic, says that the Hermitage expresses a transition straddles the fin de siècle aestheticism and poetry avant-garde of the 1910s. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Ballet in three acts. Libretto by Lidia Paskova and Marius Petipa]

Leipzig: M.P. Belaieff, 1898. 3-167, [1] pp. 35x28 cm. In later cloth. Illustrated front cover preserved. Stains on the boards and some restoration to the cover. Otherwise very good. Inscription by A. Glazunov on the front cover: «To dedicated musician and tireless social activist Boris Iosifovich Narovlyansky for a good memory from a devoted to him admirer of the "women"from the third floor. A. Glazunov. 24th of April, 1921». Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov (1865-1936) was a Russian composer and conductor, student of Rimsky-Korsakov, professor and head of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory (1907-1928). One of his most famous students of Dmitrii Shostakovich. This is a two-hand piano reduction of the most famous and celebrate of his compositions - ballet 'Raymonda' (1897). Boris Narovlyansky was Russian musician studying in St. Petersburg conservatory while Glazunov was a director there. Composer was impressed by his skills and accepted him into the conservatory. There was an interesting episode when he and his fellow students in 1919 during deficit of the food went to see the minister of education Lunacharsky to ask him for alcohol for their director as he was, apparently, dependent on it! Minor weakness between the odd page but being picky. Great photoplate. A rare Wisden Almanack in superb condition and a very nice price. Since we started in 2008 we have sold 3 previously. This is in better conditon than the previous 3 They sold for : Oct 2010 @ £8500 - Nov 2011 @ £7700 - Feb 2013 @ £8950.

        THE MOTOGRAPH MOVING PICTURE BOOK.

FIRST COLOURED ENGLISH EDITION 1898, (Preface states "New edition in colours"), 4to, 300 x 235 mm, 11¾ x 9 inches, cloth backed boards with large coloured illustration to upper cover specially commissioned from Toulouse Lautrec by the original French publishers (indoor scene, 2 women, 1 playing with this book, large dog in foreground, man walking into room, cat and cockatoo). 23 full page coloured illustrations, attributed on title page to F.J.         Unpublished Children's book manuscript by the wife of Hungary's first President. Came from a collection of a children'™s book editor active in the 1940s to 50s

      - A 48 page corrected typescript of a book titled "JINX" along with 6 original hand-painted illustrations done b the author herself, the Countess Catherine Karolyi (1898-1985). Laid in a homemade green paper binder with a piece of tan burlap affixed to the front. A watercolor illustration by Karolyi is present but no longer affixed to the cover. Title page reads story and illustrations by Countess Catherine Karolyi; adaptation into English by Elizabeth Burrows Archer. On the next page is the following note: "As Countess Karolyi was doing the illustrations in Paris while I was rewriting the story in Zurich there are several discrepancies between the illustrations and the text at the moment. Few sample illustrations. The story of a miniature boy, no bigger at the age of 7 than a milk bottle. He is given the nickname Jinx because of his bad luck. Over 30 pages of the text have corrections in pencil, 17 probably made by the translator. His brothers constantly pick on him and his only friends are Mr. Mouse, Sir Anthony Prettytail – a caged swallow, and Mr. O’Muffin, a rag doll. He runs away and on the way out frees Tony the Swallow from his cage. He finds a badly beaten Mr. O’Muffin in need of help. Jinx goes to Toyland to find help for his friend where he is given a passport on the Dolltown train. The King of Toyland is gravely ill and in need of a magic medicine called Greenicillin. Jinx goes to the Toyland pharmacist to buy some but finds it is only available in a place called "Leaf-land" whose location is unknown. Jinx sees Doctor Fixitup to tell him about his wounded friend back in Man’s Land and the Doctor tells him about a magic growth medicine that the King uses once a year to grow in size and visit the world of Man’s Land. Jinx sets out to find Leaf-land to procure some of the Greenicillin. so he may save the king and get the growth medicine in return. Jinx returns to his rag doll friend in the forest and Mr. O’Muffin tells him of a visit with Mr. Septimus Dew from a place called Leaf-land. Located high in the branches of the tree. Jinx hitches a ride up the tree from Mr. Snail to the top branch where Leaf-land lies. He meets a Dr. Green who will give him his only bottle of Greenicillin if he slays the pesky Herr Creepy Caterpillar who keeps attaching Leaf-land. With the help of Tony the swallow, Jinx defeats the creature in battle and becomes a hero in Leaf-land. The doctor gives him the medicine and Jinx is flown back to the Palace by Tony, where he finds the King barely alive. Jinx gives the medicine to the King’s seven (7) wise old doctors and soon the King is cured. The grateful King gives Jinx the growth medicine and he returns home to his grieving family as a normal-sized boy. The six (6) watercolor illustrations by Karolyi are well executed and mounted on grey craft paper. The illustration include: the King in bed surrounded by his seven(7) doctors after he has taken the medicine; Jinx hiding under a tea cup; Jinx talking to the Toy land pharmacist; a portrait of Dr. Green in uniform; Herr Creepy Caterpillar attacking Leaf-land; and Jinx growing in size after taking the special medicine. Condition-wise the text and illustrations are in very good shape with some light wear. The green binder has significant wear and is separated at the spine. The cover illustration is separated from the burlap and cover.         Teatro Regio Torino.

Italian poster for Torino's Royal Theatre Milan: Ricordi 1898. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1899. Plate no. 192. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art. By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche.
