Paris and London: Flory and Hacon and Ricketts, 1898. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. One of 256 copies (stated on the limitation but there were probably fewer copies were actually printed [Watry,The Vale Press]). A wonderful presentation copy. Inscribed by Lucien Pissarro: "To Archie MacGregor from Lucien Pissarro. April 1898." MacGregor, a painter and follower of the Pre-Raphaelites, had been a teacher of Esther Pissarro and her friend Diana White at the Crystal Palace School of Art in London and was a close friend. It was MacGregor who found the Pissarros their house, The Brook, located near his own in Bedford Park. The first eight pages were set by Pissarro at the Eragny Press, but due to his ill-health the rest of the book was produced by Ricketts at the Ballantyne Press like other Vale Press books. The cover for this book was Lucien's wife, Esther Pissarro's, first independent printing project at the Eragny Press. Lucien had begun it before his illness but could not finish (Genz, A History of the Eragny Press, page 37). The resulting binding is in grey/green paper with a green and red floral design by Lucien called the "Wild Rose." .Covers are bumped and spine somewhat worn and rubbed. Offsetting to free front and rear endpapers and some darkening to top page edges but otherwise in beautiful condition. With tipped-in errata slip in rear. In French. 31 pages. ART/071516.

White Stains : The Literary Remains of George Archibald Bishop, A Neuropath of the Second Empire.

Amsterdam: Leonard Smithers, 1898. Small 4to, pp. 131. Printed on Van Gelder handmade paper. Uncut in original cream wrappers. Upper wrapper detached, large 'W' to upper wrapper, wrappers sunned, extremities rubbed, light scattered foxing to margins. Housed in a custom-made clamshell box. First edition. 100 copies. This copy out of series and in original wrappers. Perhaps a unique proof copy of the rarest and certainly the most outspokenly erotic of all 1890s decadent verse. The total print run consisted of one hundred numbered copies, bound in black cloth with white lettering. THIS IS THE ONLY KNOWN COPY IN WRAPPERS, and that it is unnumbered suggests that it may be a trial copy run off by the Amsterdam printers, probably Roeloffzen-Hubner & Van Santen, for Leonard Smithers, the clandestine London publisher acting for Crowley. White Stains is ascribed by its anonymous 'editor' to George Archibald Bishop, named for Tom Bond Bishop, Crowley's pious Plymouth Brother uncle and guardian. Crowley once said of Bishop that 'no more cruel fanatic, no meaner villain, ever walked the earth.' Of White Stains, Crowley wrote that it is 'commonly quoted by my admirers as evidence of my addiction to every kind of unmentionable vice. Asses! It is, indeed, technically an obscene book, and yet the fact that I wrote it proves the purity of my heart and mind in the most extraordinary fashion.' Timothy d'Arch Smith tells us that, according to George Raffalovich, joint editor of Crowley's periodical The Equinox [1909-1919], the poem in this collection called With Dog and Dame is not by Crowley, but is a translation of a French poem whose author is unknown.       London: Geo. Newnes, 1898-9., 1898. Octavo. Vols. V and VII, complete. Uniformly bound in publisher's pictorial khaki cloth stamped in gilt, green and brown. Some light, expected wear but essentially clean copies wioth a little spine toning to the earlier volume. Contains the scarce first appearance of 'Real Ghost Stories' by Flaxman Low accompanied by 75 illustrations; only 12 were published in the book-form edition of 1899 (a copy of which sold for £1900 at auction in 1999). Also features stories by George Griffith, Max Pemberton, Baroness Orczy, C.C. Hyne (Capt. Kettle), Victor Whitechurch (a train mystery of course), Frank Aubrey (an uncollected fantasy), plus the usual period articles on ballooning, railways, trave and other pastimes and technologies (Ocean cables etc.).         An Alphabet.

Heinemann, London. 1898 - First edition. The ''Library Edition'' with the tipped-in colour lithographic title-page and twenty-six plates printed on laid paper and bound in full pictorial oatmeal cloth, all edges gilt. Folio. The Alphabet was also issued in two other versions: a de luxe edition of about 50 copies printed from the blocks and coloured by hand; a popular edition with the plates printed on cartridge paper and bound in cloth-backed boards. This is the first of the five picture books that Nicholson published with Heinemann. The first image, ''A was an Artist'', is a self portrait, while the second, ''B for Beggar'', is a portrait of James Pryde with whom Nicholson developed a striking poster style under the name the Beggarstaff Brothers. Two of the plates differ from those in the de luxe edition, as it was thought that ''E is for Executioner'' and ''T is for Toper'' might not be suitable for younger eyes; here they have become ''E is for Earl'' and ''T for Trumpeter''.Covers rubbed at the corners. Spine tanned and scuffed, heavily in places. Very good. The plates are fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ross, both printed on light-brown stock, 2 half-tone plates, numerous half-tone illustrations, diagrams, maps and plans in the text, 108 full-page, and half-tone head- and tailpieces; occasional light spotting or marking, a few ll. and one folding map with short marginal tears; original blue cloth, upper boards lettered in gilt and with vignettes blocked in silver, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut; some light offsetting onto free endpapers, some very light marking on boards, extremities lightly rubbed and bumped, otherwise a very good set.First UK edition, bound up from the American sheets with new titles. Northward over the "Great Ice" is the record of Peary's Arctic expeditions up to 1897, whose achievements included the determination of the northernmost extension of the ice cap and the insularity of Greenland, together with the gathering of a mass of scientific and ethnographic data. 'As a result of his experiences Peary had come to the conclusion that the only practicable means for reaching the North Pole consisted in pushing a ship as far northward as possible to a winter harbor on the Greenland coast, and then early in spring traveling with dogs and sledges due north until the Pole was attained' (DAB). Peary's ventures are also remarkable among exploring voyages for the active involvement of their leader's wife, who was the first Caucasian woman to winter with an Arctic expedition and gave birth to a girl farther north than any other Caucasian child had been born before.'Born in 1856, into a family of New England merchants, Robert Edwin Peary was undoubtedly the most driven, possibly the most successful, and probably the most unpleasant man in the annals of polar exploration' (Fleming, Ninety Degrees North (London: 2001), p. 284). His method of exploration advocated the use of a small team of explorers adopting as far as possible the survival skills of the native Eskimos. 'When he went travelling he carried no tent but built igloos instead; where the English wore cotton and wool, and the Scandinavians dressed in Iceland sweaters and windcheaters, Peary wore Eskimo furs; where others struggled with sleeping bags, Peary slept Eskimo-style in the clothes he wore. In return, Peary trained the Eskimos in what he proudly called the "Peary System" of exploration, which consisted of three separate parties: the first to prepare the ground and build shelters at designated resting places; the second to haul caches of food in their wake; and the third, the polar group, which would follow behind, carrying a minimum of supplies so that they would be fresh for the big push [.] A similar system of tripartite sledge travelling had been employed by the British during the Franklin rescue missions forty years before. But if Peary could claim credit for none of the individual details he was the first to bring them together, combining European and Eskimo techniques to produce the most efficient method of travelling long distances in the Arctic' (Fleming, op. cit., p. 295).NMM I, 980; for the US ed., cf.
