THE OPEN BOAT AND OTHER TALES OF ADVENTURE .

Doubleday & McClure Co., New York 1898 - Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-336, original pictorial green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in dark green and silver. Crane's best collection of short fiction, including several of his most powerful and best known stories. "The Open Boat," one of Crane's finest short stories, "was based upon his own experiences on his way to Cuba as a correspondent during the filibustering expeditions preceding the Cuban War. The emotions and reactions of four men in an open boat after a wreck are given with an insight and a fidelity to fact that makes the story memorable." - Quinn, American Fiction, p. 536. The collection also contains several tales based on Crane's western trip in 1895 to Mexico via Nebraska, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas, including his archetypal "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky," in which the mythical Old West yields to the reality of civilization. The fine "Death and the Child," a war story set during the Turko-Greek War in 1897, is "clearly a version of THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, which it resembles in the incident of panicky flight, in its implication of nature in a drama of self discovery, and in its imagery of the psychological distress that motivates the hero. But it is also like "The Open Boat" in that its protagonist is in a measure -- up to the moment of panic -- introspective and contemplative." - James B. Colvert, "Stephen Crane," DLB 12 (1982), p. 122. BAL 4079 (noted spine imprint B, no priority established). Wright (III) 1256. Previous owner's name and date (1898) in ink to front free endpaper, a little rubbing to silver stamping of spine and a touch of shelf wear, a fine copy.         China. No. 1 (1899) Correspondence Respecting the Affairs of China.

London.: HMSO.. March1899.. xxiv + 360pp. Attractively bound in light blue paper covered boards with contrasting dark blue cloth spine. A very good copy. 31 x 21cm. Styled "Correspondence respecting the Affairs of China", these important and voluminous papers relate mainly to events in 1898. They consist of 473 items, many with several enclosures, in 360 pages with a convenient xxiii page table of contents. Prepared for the information of both Houses of the British Parliament, the Papers comprise the despatches and telegrams exchanged between the British Minister in Peking and the Marquis of Salisbury who, as Britain’s Prime Minister, was also the Foreign Minister of the day. Together with miscellaneous enclosures, the papers show China under stress from the commercial and political pressures being exerted by the Great Powers in the years after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95. They also shed light on the developing internal and external crisis in the affairs of China which culminated in the "Boxer" anti-foreign uprising in 1899-1900 which led to the armed intervention of the Great Powers and the occupation of Peking. China’s problems were real and many, and the gentlemanly veneer of diplomatic language seen in the papers could scarcely hide the greed and aggression of the Powers. Urged on by powerful commercial interests and ambitious politicians in their home countries, the diplomats jostled each other in the rush to extract as much as they could from a weak and divided China. These are the underlying themes that appear throughout these papers. Among the issues of the day, the papers touch on the cession of Port Arthur and Talienwan to Russia, the German occupation of Kiao-chau (Tsingtau), the leases of Weihaiwei and Hong Kong’s "New Territory" to Britain, and of Kwangchauwan to France. The extension of treaty ports and foreign concessions, and of "zones of interest" like that of Britain in the Yangtse Valley and of Germany in Shantung, also feature prominently. There are, besides, informative reports on the progress of the epic “Hundred Days Reform” movement and the coup by which the Empress Dowager was restored to power, as well as on the leading reformer Kang Yuwei, whose flight was assisted by the British authorities. Translations from imperial edicts serve to heighten the drama. These were crowded and, for the Qing Court and government, fearful and anxious times. The Correspondence is basic to an understanding of the period leading up to the dramatic events of 1900, and still makes good, and often gripping, reading today. .

Mission Pavie Indo-Chine 1879-1895.

Paris, Ernest Leroux [text volumes]; Augustin Challamel [atlas], 1898-1919. Ten volumes in 11 (ten text volumes and one atlas). Large 4to. (28.0 x 22.0 cm). Title pages, 3981 pp., 64 maps, 121 plates of which 33 in full colour; about 700 text figures. All original printed wrappers bound in. Uniform early 20th century half calf over marbled boards. Spines with four raised bands and gilt titles.= The complete results of the exploration of French Indo-China by Auguste Pavie. "Auguste Jean-Marie Pavie (1847-1925) was a French colonial civil servant, explorer and diplomat who was instrumental in establishing French control over Laos in the last two decades of the 19th century. After a long career in Cambodia and Cochinchina, Pavie became the first French vice-consul in Luang Prabang in 1885, eventually becoming the first Governor-General and plenipotentiary minister of the newly formed French colony of Laos" (Wikipedia). The work is separated into three parts: 'Various studies' ('Études diverses'), in three volumes, including one on the zoology of the area with contributions by several experts and with many new species that are often splendidly illustrated; 'Géographie et voyages', in seven volumes, with many fine maps, and an atlas with another ten large scale maps. Except for the atlas, all volumes are richly illustrated in the text, mainly with photos, a few volumes more dominantly with engravings. The first "études diverses" volume contains fine chromolithographs. Volume VII is very scarce. Another book-dealer states that "La presque totalité du tirage du volume VII a été détruite peu après son impression". A more detailed collation is as follows: Paris, Ernest Leroux, 1901. Frontispiece portrait, by F. Florian; [i] (errata), 1-333 pp., 137 text figures (photos). 1906. Géographie et voyages. II. Eigenh. Brief mit U. [Paris, 30. I. 1898].

1898. 1 S. Kl.-8vo. (Carte Pneumatique Fermée). Mit eh. Adresse. Hierzu zählten u. a.

ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR PAINTING (AUTHOR OF MADELINE)

0, 0 - LUDWIG BEMELMANS, (AMERICAN 1898-1962) WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, 7.5¿ X 5¿ (Sight) FRAMED TO DIMENSIONS OF 17.25¿ X 14.5¿ SIGNED LOWER MIDDLE A Stunning Original Watercolor painting on paper by Ludwig Bemelmans (see bio below). A vibrant classic piece in fine condition of a portrait of a woman. Ludwig Bemelmans always considered himself an artist first, and an author second. This piece is richly toned in inks with watercolor wash in the classic Bemelmans style. Has an important, wonderful presence on the wall, presented in a gilt rubbed wood frame with a stunning richly textured linen mat (hard to see the texture in the images), and UV glass. Fully framed and glazed using 100% archival materials. The artwork is a unique original piece from a tipped in page from the book, The Donkey Inside, limited signed edition. The limited edition was an early Bemelman¿s title in which he created a unique watercolor for each book. Each individual piece was rendered on a separate page and then later ¿tipped in¿ to the book. The page was then gently removed from the book and framed (the process could easily be reversed if desired). The framed art will be accompanied by the book for provenance. Originally published in 1941, The Donkey Inside contains chapters that originally appeared in Town & Country, Vogue, Globe, and The New Yorker. Presented as a trip to Ecuador, this book is actually based on notes takes during several voyages through South America. Bemelmans says: ¿In a sense it is a portrait of that continent, from Chile to the Panama Canal, but it is focused on Ecuador, because there I found, in stronger outline than anywhere else, the things particular to South America.¿ This piece is SIGNED by Ludwig Bemelmans lower middle. Original works of art by Bemelmans are extremely scarce with paintings/scenes from the characters of his books selling for over $22,000 Condition: The art is in excellent condition. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for other rare books and original illustration artwork [Attributes: First Edition]

London & Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1898 - Octavo. Bound in recent green cloth, titles to spine gilt, brown coated endpapers, red speckled edges. Housed in a custom red half morocco solander box. Occasional faint foxing to contents; an excellent copy. Frontispiece portrait with tissue guard and 6 maps (4 of them folding and coloured, 4 full-page). First edition, Colonial Library issue of Churchill's first book (the first and second printings are identical). The book relates Churchill's exploits with the Malakand field force, led by Sir Bindon Blood, on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897, based on Churchill's despatches to the Daily Telegraph and the Pioneer Mail. As Churchill was still in India when the book was published, the final editing was undertaken by his uncle Moreton Frewen, husband of Clara Jerome, Jennie's elder sister, resulting in numerous small errors which were corrected the following year in the Silver Library edition.
